Kamisama Kiss

The new responsibilities are a lot to handle, like the crow demon masquerading as a gorgeous pop idol and the adorable snake spirit who’s chosen the newly minted god to be his bride. 8

All Otaku Magazine Issue 13

Studio name: TMS Entertainment Director: Akitaro Daichi Original run: October 1, 2012 – December 24, 2012 Genre: Romantic Comedy, Fantasy, Supernatural Japanese name: Kamisama hajimemashita Manga counter part: Kamisama hajimemashita Kamisama Hajimemashita follows the story of Nanami Monozono, a 15 year old high school student who suddenly finds herself homeless after her father runs away following the accumulation of a large debt. She is then evicted from her home and while pondering what to do next, she saves a strange man from an angry dog. As a reward he offers her his home to stay and leaves her with a kiss on her forehead before disappearing. His home turns out to be a rundown temple to the Earth Deity and the blonde stranger that Nanami helped is Mikage, the actual Earth Deity. And what shocks her even more, is the fact that she is now the Earth Deity and in charge of the shrine and the duties that go with it. Providing assistance to her are the 2 keepers of the shrine named Onikiri and Kotetsu and Mikage’s familiar, the handsome fox demon Tomoe. In typical shoujo fashion, Nanami and Tomoe fall in love, however, he is resistant to the idea of becoming romantically involved with her as she is merely a human while he is her foxdemon familiar. Despite this resistance, he becomes extremely protective of her and their love slowly but surely blossoms. The series revolves around Nanami and her determination to become a better Earth Deity in order to protect people and answer their prayers. While Tomoe is the typical shoujo hero, he has to deal with many issues especially from his dark past. Season 1 of Kamisama Hajimemashita focused mostly on Nanami’s journey to becoming a good deity and successfully handling all the duties that come with being a deity in addition to attaining more followers for the shrine, which dwindled in Mikage’s absence. She also has to deal with new dangers that arise with being a God, such as demons who want to kill her and steal her powers. It ended in December 2012 after 13 episodes, and season 2 began on 6 January 2015. The anime is quite hilarious with all the various characters providing some form of comic relief at any given moment. Nanami also has a strong will and determination that makes

9

her unlike the traditional shoujo heroine. I love how Tomoe is represented as being a foxdemon who is also a familiar, and how, like any normal human, he suffers with abandonment issues (with Mikage having left him to tend to the shrine) and struggles with his growing attachment to Nanami. It was an extremely entertaining series, and the second season has thus far not disappointed with the same level of comedy and interesting storyline as the first. Season 1 focused heavily on Nanami’s journey to becoming a good deity, while season 2 appears to focus more on Tomoe’s dark past, which he somehow cannot remember. I have say though that while this is a great anime, I feel that the whole fox demon aspect has been done to death and perhaps Tomoe should have been some other kind of demon. While it the story follows the shoujo formula in that Nanami is a high school girl that somehow ends up living with some strange guy and eventually falls in love with him, I have to admit, that I really do admire her character. While she is physically weak, and Tomoe has to rescue her often from the clutches of demons, she has a ton of determination and is always trying her best to become a better deity. She is a hard worker and is quite strongwilled. Additionally, I admire her strength as she is always taking responsibility for herself and her actions despite being unable to perform all the duties of a deity correctly. She also does not spend all of her time crying about her shortcomings, rather she spends her time working hard to overcome them. That said, Kamisama Hajimemashita is a great anime to watch, as the characters are fun, the story is interesting (and does not entirely revolve around the love shared between the 2 lead characters), and Nanami is not an eternal crybaby that is forever spending her time trying to win over Tomoe. Even the background music is beautiful and enchanting and is the neat little bow that ties together a great anime.

First of all, for those who don’t know it too well –Kill la Kill is an Anime series produced by Trigger. This series is about a vagrant schoolgirl who is on her search for her father’s killer. That is also more or less what brings us to her violent conflict with her ironfisted student council president of Honnouji Academy and her mother’s fashion empire. Kill la Kill is Trigger’s first original T.V Anime project. Pretty good for their first attempt, don’t you think? It is directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi and written by Kazuku Nakashima. Both Imaishi and Nakashima have previously worked together with Gurren Lagann.

abilities, they are constructed with a special material known as “Life Fibers”. I already feel like I need some of those. I mean, wouldn’t you? No one likes uniforms unless they can give you superhuman abilities. Transfer student Ryuko Matoi wields a scissorshaped (half a scissorlooking) longsword that can cut Goku Uniforms. She finds a sentient sailor uniform named “Senketsu”, a Kamui which is completely made of those “Life Fibers’. It transforms her so that she can face Kiruin, her trials and obstacles. She is befriended by her hyperactive classmate Mako Mankanshoku and lives with her family.

Kill la Kill is set at Honnouji Academy. It is a fictional High School that is situated in Tokyo Bay, Japan. The school is dominated by its fearsome student council, led by Satsuki Kiryuin. Students of Hannouji Academy wear Gokuseifuku/Goku Uniforms which gives the wearers superhuman

According to director Imaishi, much of the plot is based on his observation that the Japanese manner of pronouncing of “fascism” is nearly the same as the word “fashion”. fascism – fassho fashion – fasshon Also his observation that the

11

pronunciation of the Japanese words such as “school uniform” and “conquest” are identical, and that the titular kiru may mean “kill”, “to cut”, or “to wear”. It’s a pretty nice play on words. school uniform – seifuku conquest – seifuku Elliot Gay of Japanator called it “uniquely fun, even gripping”, “a reminder of how fun and creative Anime can be at its best”. Kenn Leandre of IGN described the series as “magical girl Anime on speed”. Richard Eisenbeis of Kotaku appreciated the series for “perfectly mixing comedy and action”. From what I can see is that this Anime is not only loved for its story line, but all the things that are mixed into what makes it what it is. It has a unique and creative story mixed with comedy and action along with fan service that could probably leave me blushing. Don’t give me that look.

Laughing Under the Clouds

Studio: Dogakobo Director: Hiroshi Haraguchi Writer: Yuuya Takahashi Original run date: October 4, 2014 – December 20, 2014 Genre: Supermatural, Fantasy, Action Japanese name: Donten ni Warau Manga counter part: Donten ni Warau

With the ban of swords during the eleventh year of the Meiji era, the number of samurai begin to dwindle but there are still some who rebel against these laws and cause chaos and destruction. In order to curb these crimes, an inescapable prison was built on Lake Biwa and the only entry and exit to this prison island was via boat. Criminals were ferried across by 3 young men born to the Kumou line, and who are exceptionally skilled in combat. As the

series progresses, it becomes increasingly clear that there is more to the prison (and the job of the boys) than meets the eye. The story focuses on the lives of the Kumou boys, Tenka, Soramaru, and Chuutarou and the dangerous task of delivering criminals to the island prison that they are entrusted with. Tenka is the eldest and by far the strongest of 3, with Soramaru always trying to defeat his brother and become stronger.

All Otaku Magazine Issue 13

Chuutarou is the youngest and is still in school, however his combat skills are enviable for someone as young as he is, while he is also the quickest of the 3. Tenka is shown to be extremely protective of his siblings, never allowing them to participate in combat and always rushing off to save them from any dangers they may encounter. This is because he had become both a mother and father to his brothers after the death of their parents. Soramaru on the other hand is eager to engage in combat and is always seen practicing in order to become stronger and be able to protect his loved ones. The anime is an excellent anime, both in terms of the story and character development. By the end of the anime, each of the characters has shown tremendous growth, both personally and physically. The story will keep you on the edge of your seat, with the outstanding fight sequences and the touching story of the bond between brothers. Whether you are a fan of shoujo and samurai anime or not, this is definitely a series to watch.

Could you assassinate your teacher? Class E3 has to assassinate Korosensei before it destroys the world. Assassination Classroom is a quirky concept from the Weekly Shonen Jump Manga. Starting in 2012, it has 12 volumes and beginning of this year has been made into an anime series, as well a live action feature coming in 21 March (Japan Release). An octopus looking alien who has an emoji for a head has claimed to lived on earth his entire life has destroyed the moon making it into a permanent crescent shape. The government has been trying to assassinate this creature but to no avail. Although, have created special bullets and knives that do harm him. That being said, This being has the ability to travel at Mach 20 which is 6805.8 m/s which translates to 24 500 880 kph. Good luck stabbing that. The alien told the government that they have a year to eliminate him before he destroys the world. But, on one condition. That he teaches the students at Class E3 until graduation. He has promised not to harm any student under his care and teach them about him or herself while gaining good grades. The weird condition sparks the groundwork for this great narrative called Assassination Classroom.

14

Being an educator myself, I have would highly recommend this narrative to my students as well as any fan of Japanese storytelling. The setting takes place in Kunugigaoka High school, which is a prestigious school for highlevel learners. The E 3 Class or they refer to themselves as ‘End Class’. These pupils are regarded as the misfits of the school and aren’t respected by their peers. Which gives us some subtext on why would Korosensei teach this specific class. The characters in this storyline have yet to show their personal goals and affiliations. In a class of 30 that I can tell they will all eventually have their time on screen using their skills and or abilities to kill Korosensei (The unkillable teacher). So far, Nagisa is a scribe and writes down all of Korosensi weaknesses, behaviours and abilities. Sugino loves baseball and has a great throwing arm and Manami, who is exceptionally good at chemistry and poisonmaking that Korosensei gladly takes. Eventually throughout the series we will grow with the characters and understand how they would play a part to kill Korosensei Korosensnsei is by far the most

All Otaku Magazine Issue 13

dynamic character because we know what he is capable of. And in true Otaku Japanese fashion it had to be a seemingly indestructible octopus (any tentacle erotica fans? :3) Although, his personality quirks seem juvenile and misplaced sometimes. It adds texture and intrigue towards the character. The series seamlessly adds the anecdotal comedy that we see from most animes and has a refreshing dark undertone that we have begun to appreciate as audience members. The anime has recently started dubs and the subs are up to Episode 6. The show usually airs on Fridays so check it out on your streaming website. All in all this series will find its why to your heart and it’s thought provoking concept that will be added to your watch list.

Shinichiro is a male student who needs a job to pay his rent. He gets one as a housekeeper for the Shimizu family. However, little does he know that his female employer, Sakuya Shimizu is actually the head of the Shimizu Clan that is responsible for hunting monsters. When he unwittingly lets one of these monsters loose, he is forced to help her deal with the situation. The story takes a twist however, when she finds out that Shinichiro can actually increase her power to exorcise these creatures ten fold, but only when she kisses him. At first she is reluctant to do so, but over time she actually comes to care for him. Her true name is Isuca, and when Shinichiro discovers this little fact, she becomes unable to disobey him. Lets just say that things get really sticky at this point. The anime is highly reminescent of your standard romance that we have seen in so many anime. A few titles come to mind. The anime is good however, and we highly recommend it. Not by any leaps or bound the best in season, but neither is it one to pass up.

Boku no hero academia

Released: July 2013 Director(s): Hideaki Fujii Published by: Shogakukan

Released: July 7, 2014 Author(s): Kōhei Horikoshi Published by: Shueisha There is literally no combination of words that I can put together to hype this manga up enough. Since the Naruto left our hearts and shelves at 700 brilliant chapters, people have needed something as epic to fill the void. This is it! Boku no Hero Academia is set in a world where super powers are a common thing gained from birth, the better your power and control the more chance of you becoming a world renowned superhero if you graduate from Yūei High School, the academy that grooms the next generation of heroes. Izuku Midoriya was just a regular middle school student in a world where people with superpowers known as "Quirks" are the norm. However, he dreams of one day becoming a Hero despite being bullied by his classmates for not having a Quirk. After being the only one to try and save his childhood friend, Katsuki, from a Villain, All Might, the world's greatest Hero, bestows upon him his own quirk, "One For All".

Dawn of Arcana

Witchcraft Works

Released: 24 January 2009 Author(s): Rei Toma Published by: Shogakukan

Released: June 2010 Author(s): Mizunagi Ryuu

Also called Reimei no Arcana, is a drama, fantasy, harem, historical, romance, shoujo. Yes quite a bit of a mix, what starts off as being a simple historical drama manga escalates almost exponentially as the story deepens. Nakaba a red haired girl is married off to a prince to ensure that their countries keep at peace. This marriage effectively ended a 200 year long war, but Nakaba faces discrimination for her appearance – notably her red hair. Aside from the personal trials that she faces Nakaba is exposed to the delicate politics and the interconnected international relations, all the while discovering the back stories of those around her setting up for the big twist. Genuinely a worthwhile read.

LBX which is abbreviated from Little Battlers Experience is a story of miniaturised robots modified by kids to fight and ultimately save the world. Generally the story and character development is well done and it’s something that you would be able to consume on occasion. However the one thing that takes away from the great quality of this series is that it is basically a regurgitation of many of the things that covered our screens of yesteryear. With a few modifications in design LBX can be reboxed to become BeyBlade, Mediabots and Bakugan. Even though it can be seen as a copy paste, LBX takes the time to make itself stand out with an interesting development of events and should be given a chance to prove itself as a worthwhile read.

The main character (Takamiya, Honoka) is a regular student whose only problem seems to be that he sits next to Kagari, Ayaka, the school's #1 beauty. Yet when a falling part of the school's building is about to send him to the afterlife, it was her who came to his rescue. Except, she was dressed as a witch, carrying him in her arms and floating on a broom. She continues to protect him using her fire magic until the attempt on his life ends. She tells him it is her mission to protect him, and that now she can finally protect him openly. Why was Takamiya attacked, who asked Kagari to protect him, and why does she refer to him as "my princess"?

Kiss of the Rose Princess (Barajo no Kisu) Anis Yamamoto’s father gave her an amulet that he said would protect but if she ever took it off she would be afflicted by punishment. After an incident occurs at school, the amulet disappears and she receives 4 cards which allows her to summon the Rose Rhode Knights who inform her that she is the Rose Princess. She is told that she has to obtain the Arcana cards and by doing so will prevent the Devil’s seal from disintegrating. However she is opposed by the Artificial Rose Princess and her Artificial Rose Rhode Knights who want the Arcana cards to prove that they are the real Rose Knights and Princess. During the course of collecting these cards, Anis learns much about herself and uncovers secrets she never even knew existed.

and become quite indepth and intriguing. The story isn’t romancebased as there are only small moments of love in the manga, however there is plenty of comedy, action, and magical elements to spark the imagination. The manga was also a tad bit confusing at certain points, however the intrigue of the story certainly kept me reading until the end. This is a good read for any romcom fans, especially if you enjoy reverseharem mixed in with some action.

Barajou no Kiss appears to be a unique shoujo manga in that it is a reverseharem story. CHAPPiE Director: Neill Blomkamp Producer: Simon Kinberg Production Company: Media Rights Capital Based On: Tetra Vaal by Neill Blomkamp Release date: 13 March 2015 Rating: 5/10

CHAPPiE is the science fiction film directed by Neill Blomkamp. Can someone say “The makers of District 9 & Elysium?” The screenplay is written by Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell, based on Blomkamp’s 2004 short film Tetra Vaal. The film stars Sharlto Copley as Chappie, Dev Patel as Deon

31

For most South African's the word Chappie is synonymis with chewing gum but for foreigners it takes on a whole new meaning in this South African sci fi robotics film.

Wilson, Jose Pablo Cantillo as Yankie/Amerika, Sigourney Weaver (known as Ellen Ripley in the Alien franchise), Hugh Jackman (known for his film roles as Wolverine in X Men) as Vincent Moore, Anderson Cooper as himself, Brandon Auret as Hippo, Watkin Tudor Jones –better known by the name of

All Otaku Magazine Issue 13

“Ninja” as Ninja and Yolandi Visser as Yolandi. Ninja and Yolandi are both from the South African “zef” raprave group “Die Antwoord”. In the beginning of the film, it kinda throws you into familiar territories. It’s crime on the news, it looks bad and it’s everywhere. The worst thing

about it…well it’s South Africa. Well, not like we would be surprised if it was as bad as the movie showed it. The sight of blood running down the street made me cringe. In the effort to reduce the crime rate in Johannesburg, the South African Police force purchases armourplated attack droids from the weapons manufacturer Tetravaal. SUPPLIED! Was it a good decision though? It proved to be successful in reducing crime…at least at that time being. The robot’s inventor Deon Wilson was praised for Tetravaal’s success, apart from Scout 22 being brought in for repairs the umpteenth time. The Robotic police units who don’t look bad wearing the South African flag –by the way were about to cross paths with two interesting looking gangs. I do mean this in the sense of one gang consisting of three memorable characters. Two of them are from the zef group called The Antwoord –Ninja with a yellow rifle and a pink magazine clip and Yolandi, the other guy is called “Amerika” who’s accent makes it a bit more obvious just as much as his slang. The other gang is easily forgettable, except for Hippo who gets English subtitles every time he speaks…even when you can clearly hear him speak in English. Engineer Vincent Moore grows jealous after his funding is cut for his own attack robot, the MOOSE. Yeah, there’s obviously no resemblance to one. Yes, it does kinda look similar to some of the robots who have been in the enemy side –in quite a few different films. You should understand this by the phrase I’ll be using later. The MOOSE is strong, it’s powerful, it’s impressive in statistics, but the police commissioner shuts plans of any interest in it down. Apart from it having to rely on a human operator, with all its fancy weapons…“It’s overkill”. At home, Deon created a prototype A.I. (Artificial Intelligence). This could give a droid a human mind to

32

the point of feeling emotions and having opinions, but sadly the Tetravaal CEO Michelle Bradley denies him permission to test the A.I. on a police robot. DENIED! Not like it stopped him from trying though. Regardless of the denied request, he rescued Scout 22 that was scheduled to become scrap metal. To make things even more stressful for Deon, he and his project was “hijacked”. Soon, the robot that was almost scrapped, received the A.I. program that Deon created and from the corny phrase –Chappie was born. So, former police robot who used to fight crime and kick ass gets reborn with consciousness, potential, emotion and learns to speak South African gangster with added Mexican, because of uncle Amerika. “You stealing daddy’s cars to support your alcohol!” The film has quite a few sides to it; bullying, abusive parenting, bloody violence (Rated 16 for a reason by the way), it has its humour as well as its serious side. A better way for me to describe this film would be that it’s like Short Circuit meets the original Robocop bad guy (that’s the phrase I was talking about earlier). Also in relation to the phrase and the MOOSE –the way one of the characters died also made me cringe… In the end, the main antagonist who was behind the actions of the MOOSE tasted the results of his actions, but the ending is what got to me a little. In the overall, good movie with a lot of potential, but it’s not something I would watch again. The story isn’t really bad. The bloody violence is a little too much for me though. The humour was good and it has moments that will pull at your heart strings…no, I didn’t say you will cry, but you should at least feel something if no tears appear. The plot however gets drowned before resurfacing as a bit predictable. If anything, I’ll give it a 5/10. It’s good, but not the next big thing.

Based on the Marvel Comics superhero team well known as The Avengers, produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It’s the sequel everyone has waited for –Avengers: Age of Ultron. Can you believe it? It’s the eleventh instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (or “MCU” for short). In Avengers: Age of Ultron, the Avengers has to work together to defeat Ultron. With the destruction of S.H.I.E.L.D and the hiatus from the Avengers, Tony Stark jumpstarted a dormant peacekeeping program called “Ultron”. Just exactly who or what exactly is Ultron? Based on the work of Tony Stark, you can imagine that

this wouldn’t necessarily be something to take lightly. We’re all technically screwed…just kidding (I think). Ultron is a selfaware, selfteaching, artificial intelligence (A.I). Creating something like this seemed like such a good idea at the time (I guess this would be like tin underwear. It would seem like a good idea, until you get a little uncomfortable with that tin crotch feeling). However, Tony’s plan backfires when Ultron decides that humans are the main enemy and plans to eradicate all of humankind on Earth. It is up to Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye. They won’t be going alone at it either as they will have support from Nick Fury and Maria Hill to stop Ultron.

KGB Survivalist gives you tips and tricks around the house CrazyRussianHacker real name Taras Kulakov (Who is actually from Czech Rep) has close to 4 million subscribers and has been a popular favourite a couple of times within YouTube, Vine and most recently Instagram. Unique science experiments, chemistry and DIY tools to fashion survival tools or weapons, from items around your household. With a strong Russian accent and signature sunglasses he tests different devices and creates interesting and unique experiments. His most recent publicly knowable video is when he cooks CocaCola in a pan. That I’m sure you have seen on your social feeds. I particularly like the Zombie Survival Tips section, from making flashlights or weapons to fight zombies using only household items. Or if your struggling to peel a pineapple the right way. It has something for you. His videos are about 4 to 10 minutes on the how to do it aspect. But, has Slow Motion Laboratory channel which

looks very pretty at 1080fps.

The zombie weapons though I don’t feel could actually hurt a zombie. A hanger made into a crossbow could take your eye out. With a zombie, I don’t think it will actually stop it unless it has a sense of humour. The survival tips on how to open cans without tools or recharging batteries without electric power are tricks or life hacks that could save your life one day. CrazyRussianHacker is very close to becoming Batman, if he ever was a KGB survivalist.

He has very inventive ideas and just to remember all of them is a huge task. But, slowly after watching a couple I remember certain videos that I can reproduce and replicate at certain events such as having guests over or keeping the cooler box colds without actually using ice. Anyone who has an interest on becoming more lazy and efficient with daily chores will absolutely love this channel. Science and chemistry geeks will have plenty of fun watching lithium burn and finding out what happens when you drop dry ice into boiling water.

What is really interesting about the channel is a section called ‘You Been Doing It Wrong” Where he does cooking, ironing and making any household chore so much easier and efficient. Now, I know how to put my shirt on and off the right way and cook bacon to make a ‘sammich’. There are pranks as well that are fun to make and not expensive at all to replicate and a few bar tricks that will definitely get you a couple of free dops and

Fear and Survival in this horror FPS. A Game Directed by Alistair Hope. The Creative Assembly, Sega and 20th Century Fox presents: Aliens Isolation. Aliens: Isolation is a firstperson survival horror game from 2014 and like the others from before, this is part of the Alien series. The game is set in 2137, 15 years after the first movie “Alien” and 42 years before the movie’s sequel “Aliens”. Ellen Ripley might have been the main protagonist in many of the movies from the Alien Saga, but in this game –the story between the first two movies she’s more of a supporting character, and If not a supporting character, then a supporting presence…if that makes sense. The main protagonist for this story is none other than Ellen Ripley’s daughter, Amanda. You should be able to find the connection between Prometheus, Alien, Aliens: Isolation and Aliens within this game. Well, they are all part of the same franchise. In Aliens: Isolation, you have the ability to crouch. You can hide behind, next to and under objects/places. You

44

can also stealthily peek around corners and lean around to gain view of whatever it is you want to lookout for. You’ll also be able to run, use a flashlight and make use of your handy motion tracker that can detect the movement of those Xenomorphs (The Aliens). These abilities and technologies don’t necessarily make me want to cry from joy. Oh, no… Thanks to the unpredictable A.I design, I really just want to hide in a corner and hope I’ll survive until the end. All those abilities and nifty gadgets would be so nice and cute if the Xenomorphs weren’t still able to get you wherever the bloody heck you were. Well, these abilities can come in handy to break the line of sight and to avoid the worst possible encounters, but if you’re not careful…you’re dead.

Pay 2 Play vs Pay 4 Power There are many MMO's nowadays that use several different models of trying to "hook" players into their games. Lets have a brief look at the different models and make a comparison to see which is better in our opinion.

frustrating to play. The in game shop also tends to stock items that have incredible effects and can literally boost your character to insane levels of strength. Not very fair, not very enjoyable. Definite no go on our part.

1: Buy the game first, pay monthly subscription. A popular title that follows this is WoW. It works, has for years, probably will for another couple of years. Sucks to have your budget mangled every couple of months, but hey, the game is fairly bug free, it has regular updates and content gets added on a fairly regular basis. Not tooo shabby for what we are paying for.

4: Game has a monthly subscription, or a way in game to extend your game time. A good example of this would be EVE. Yes sure, there is still a monthly subscription, but the developers were kind enough to make a viable way possible to have our game time extended through in game means. This means, you can work your butt off, or exploit the markets a little and buy your game time yourself, the way it's meant to be. This is a very ncie balance and leaves the choice up to the players on which way they will go. The in game shop does not contain any game breaking items and the game is well balanced, updated often and bugs are fixed timely and effectively.

2: Buy the game, no monthly subscription, but in game shop. Several titles follow this formula, most notably Guild Wars 2. This is one of my favourite MMO's and the items that gets sold in the shop is not game breaking, it merely adds cosmetics and interesting trinkets to the game. Game is fairly bug free, the events are pretty cool and content also gets added fairly regularly. That, or another expansion looms. All in all, a great way to game! 3: Game is free to download, free to play. Sounds awesome right? WRONG! These games are the bane of my MMO existence. Sure, they are free, but they also tend to be unbalanced, unfair, full of bugs and sometimes just downright

47

There are probably a few others we can mention, but most of the MMO titles today fall into one of these four catagories. So now, to compare which of these we would like to see more of. First off, it should be fairly obvious that we do not condone any sort of in game item sold in the in game shop via real money that gives you any sort of advantage over any other player. Some players are still

All Otaku Magazine Issue 13

honest in their gaming, and when they work hard to get something worthwhile, it just feels cheap if you can buy something better with real money. If you want a powerful character, then it is your time invested in that char that will get you there. We do however like the fact that there is a choice on game time extension. I don't like being forced to pay for a monthly subscription, even if the game is awesome. I like to pay for my games once, and enjoying them 足 part of what made Guilwars I such an amazing title for me. With EVE, the rate at which the PLEX sells is a little high to taste, but it is also determined by the players themselves. So can't really gripe there. Giving the players the power to decide is actually rather clever. In this way, you can decide whether the time investment is worth saving enough in game currency for extension, or if you are a mild gamer, then paying for it in cash is a more viable option. So, pay to play or pay for power? Honestly, between the two, pay to play. However, I would sincerely like to see more titles adopt the EVE system leaving the choice ultimately with the players. 足 Beleran

PLEN2, the world’s first printable open source humanoid.

In a live chat between Nvidia CEO JenHsun Huang, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Musk stated that the future of driverless cars could mean the end of traveling as we know it.

PLEN2 is the first personalised robot kit allowign you to create and customise your own robot friend. The PLEN Project Commitee recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for the production of these little guys. the PLEN bots were created to facilitate education towards mechanics and the construction of robotics. Students and grownups have the opportunity to learn about programming, machine control, electronic circuits, and design. The PLEN2's can be operated through your smartphone, PC, and other input methods by sensor devices such as body motions, facial expressions, myogenic signals, and even brain waves. The PLEN2 designers have also made it possible for owners to use 3D printers as a way to customize and create their own extensions for the robots. Allowing you to make the perfect robotic friend for you and your family.

"In the distant future, I think people may outlaw driving cars because it's too dangerous," he said during the interview. "You can't have a person driving a twoton death machine." The two also touched on Musk's warnings that supersentient machines could become smarter than humans at some point and become dangerous, but Musk said he was optimistic about automotive artificial intelligence, because it's "more narrow." "Musk expressed his enthusiasm for a future when people can do less presumably without giving up control over the machines that take over their most tedious chores." TechNewsWorld

CYMATICS: The Affects of Sound on Matter How sound and music affect the world around us. Cymatics is the study of the effect of sound waves on matter. Typically the surface of a plate, diaphragm, or membrane is vibrated, and regions of maximum and minimum displacement are made visible in a thin coating of particles, paste, or liquid. Different patterns are formed based on different frequencies running through different materials. Cymatics has been around for at least 1000 years when African tribes would sprinkle sand over their drums to divine the future, but it wasn't until Leonardo Da Vinci saw shapes being formed in the dust on his work table when it was struck that we started to understand sound and what effect it has on matter. Organic farming for the free loving hippie.

In 1680 a renoun Oxford scientist by the name of Robert Hooke decided to experiement further with a plate of glass that he attached to a violen and covered it with flour. In the 1700's German musician and scientist, Ernst Chladni, decided to study this phenominon further. "He used a sand足strewn brass plate, excited by a violin bow余 since brass is a highly resonant material he found that a large number of archetypal geometric patterns could be created, depending on where on the edge of the plate the bow was drawn. These patterns are now known as 'Chladni Figures.'" 足 cymascope.com Chladni even shared his discovery with Napoleon who offered a reward to any one who could come up with a mathematical explaination for this occurance, in 1816 a young French scientist by the name of Sophie Germain explained that sound waves created areas that vibrated and areas that were still and that the sand would be moved from the vibrating areas into the still areas on the board. Because of this affect on matter many believe that cymatics

and body, but sound is a very important part of our lives that we should not be so quick to overlook. As human beings we have always seen music as an art, a way to express ourselvs and the stories we want to tell the world. Cymatics is a way for us to finally see the music we create in 3D form, essentially giving life to the things we cannot see.

Audio has always been a tool by which film makers lead their audience, telling us what to feel or what to expect. Horror movies use foreboading music or scary sounds to create a creepy atmosphere while love stories use uplifting or sad melodies make us feel the pain or joy the characters are going through. Scenes of new discovery or enlightenment are generally accompanied by an orchestra creating a sense of epic proportion and importance, and so on and so forth. Sure, it may not unlock the inner workings of the mind

otaku Playlist:

Music you should hear Click the image below to hear our list

Guilty pleasure songs for the antiquated geek, this is a list of music that we have all listened to at some point in our lives, reminding us of a simpler time when LANs and network hubs where the only way to play with friends. I am not a big fan of music. Don’t get me wrong, I do love music but I don’t own an IPod or stereo system. I just have many songs for my business with Karaoke and Stand up Comedy. So I have little jingles and songs for entertainment purposes. Last album I bought was Gorillaz – Demon Days (2005) I have a diverse taste in music, what I thoroughly enjoy is Rock and Metal especially some of our local bands which are making great compositions. Such as Aking, Seether, Zebra & Giraffe. Just to name a few, to be honest I have lost faith in recent music and as you may recognize from my playlist; many of the songs are quite old such as the 70s and sometimes 60s music. I do enjoy anime theme songs and music and every so often sing along. Japanese bands I enjoy are Maximum the Hormone and The Pillows. And I thoroughly get pleasure from film soundtracks, Usually most of time I have listened to Pirates of the Caribbean tune when I’m cooking bacon “Ba ba ba, ba ba ba, ba ba ba, Bacon! Ba ba ba, ba ba ba baaaa ba Bacon!”

52

I usually listen to music when I’m cleaning up the house or occasionally when I write or go to gym. I use music as an emotional vessel when I have bad days or just annoyed, it gives me a different perspective and most of my songs and playlist is light and have a fun sonata, including the metal songs. I know many musicians myself and play guitar once in a while. So, I am involved with the Musos. However, I wouldn’t say in any stretch of the word I’m an audiophile. I would consider myself old school when it comes to music as fore mentioned. By the way, does MTV even play music videos any more?

Cosplay Buys This is a list of must足have things to own as a cosplayer. As a new cosplayer it is hard to know what tools to buy and how to use them. This issue we take a look at some of the items used in making small to medium props.

Hot Glue Gun

Acrylic paints

Your glue gun is your best friend, like your pair of scissors it should always be at hand in your shop as it can used for more applications than you'd think.

Acrylic paint is one of my favourite paints to use for both painting and projects. Its is cheap and easy to use and can be applied to just about any surface including wood, canvus, paper, fabric, glass and even skin if done right and you should check for a reaction before hand.

"The gun uses a continuous足 duty heating element to melt the plastic glue, which may be pushed through the gun by a mechanical trigger mechanism, or directly by the user." Wikipedia As you would expect, a glue gun is used to glue items like paper, material, buttons, and even wood together. It makes the life of a cosplayer much easier allowing you to not only glue together items that cannot be sown or taped but also by allowing you to create items like ice masks and plastic claws. However you need to make sure that the material you use is compatible with heat and that the glue does not burn or scorch you project.

Sculpting Blades

Acrylic dries very quickly which means that you won't have to wait very long before you can add the next coat of paint or move to the next step in the prop making process. However it does mean that you have to move quickly when attempting to blend colours or creating effects with colours.

EVA Foam

Sculpting blades are used to mold or shape clay, foam and soft or hard plastic. Keep in mind that you should not use your sculping blades on hard surfaces as this can chip of damage your blades. Sculpting blades are ideal for prop making allowing you to get to hard to reach places and cut away uneven edges and seems. Other tools that can be used in place of or in conjunction with sculpting blades are an X足Acto knife, resembling a small Stanley Blade, a Stanley Blade, which can be retracted or expanded for reach, and wood carving knives, which can be used on harder surfaces. Micro blades are a subset of scultping blades that can be used for finer detail but should really only be used on soft materials like clay and certai types of foam. It is important to take care of your blades as they can cause defects in your props if they get chipped or damaged.

55

Acrylic paint comes in many many colours and can be found at any art store in the country, it is easy to mix so even if you cannot find the right colour it will require little effort to mix the perfect colour for your project. Acrylic is water soluble meaning that you can thin it down with water and even use a water spray to create awesome effects while the paint is still drying. Quality may vary depending on which brand you buy.

EVA (Ethylene足vinyl acetate) foam is a key ingredient in armour and prop making, it can often be bought as a sheet of thick or thin foam that can moulded when applying heat to it's surface. The heating process can harden the foam giving it a more board like consistancy. From there various varnishes and coatings can be added to further harden the EVA foam into a solid piece. It is not uncommon for entire suits of armour to be made from EVA. EVA foam can be found at most hardware stores as well as online. Great care must be taken when heating EVA as you can scorch or over heat the foam and burn a whole through the foam. Lightly heat the foam with a blow torch or heat gun if possible.

All Otaku Magazine Issue 13

Devin Green One of SA's Most loved Cosplayers joins us this issue. Hi Devin, welcome to the April issue of All Otaku Magazine. Could you introduce yourself to everyone and tell them a little about yourself. “Hi! My name is Devin and I’m a cosplayer, artist, film maker and actor, And you know sometimes clown prince, sometimes alien terrorist, depends XD” 1. Cosplayer, film student and you’ve done some photography as well, right? What other things have you been interested in? “Mainly things within the arts and geek realm. I love anything to do with film and fantasy.” 2. What is your preferred gaming platform for non MMO/MMORPG games? “PS3 all the way baby.” 3. What is your preferred gaming platform for MMO/MMORPG games?

Solas – Photo by Sliding Doors’ Cosplay

57

“Still PS3 unless it’s only available on PC” 4. What are your thoughts on games with good character builds and story structures and can you name one that would fit as a good example? “My most favourite type of game is one with those qualities, strong characters and stories make playing games worth it, losing hours into them is made easy. Bioware is a prime developer for such, like the Dragon Age series and Mass Effect of course.” 5. What would you say you’re expecting from DC & Marvel with their cinematic universe lineup having been revealed? “I’m excited for both, but Marvel has gained my trust with its film history, DC is still a bit all over the place. Their TV series such as Gotham and The Flash are doing far better. I feel that DC is rushing what Marvel has taken years to achieve. But with the current comics DC is owning.”

5. When did you start Cosplaying?

13. If there is a show, movie or game you’d recommend to the Otaku community, what would it be?

“Hmm about eight years ago, but taking it very seriously about three years.” 7. What did you think of Cosplaying before and after you first started?

“Gotham! I had my doubts but I must say I’m really enjoying it.” 14. If art was a weapon, what would be your most preferred weapon?

“I’ve always loved dressing up as my fave characters so I’ve always admired it and those that do it”

“A sharpener, hahaha.”

8. What would you say is the best thing about it?

15. Favourite quote?

“Definitely the rewarding feeling a complete costume gives you, and being well known and liked as the characters you’ve done.”

“That changes but at the moment ‘you shall not paaasss’.” 16. Your favourite Sith and Jedi?

9. Would you say that there are any downsides? “Hmm yeah a few. I’d say dealing with people who don’t understand it or accept it, and suffering from heat in costumes.” 10. Do you make your own outfits and props or buy/have it made? “Both, more often I make my own but if the character is something like my Ace Ventura then buying the things can be easier.”

“My fave Jedi is Mace Windu, Sith so far is Darth Maul, but I suspect Kylo Ren will change that.” 17. If you could reenact a scene from your favourite Comic/Manga/Novel/Series/Movie/Game, what would it be? “So many, but at the moment I’m really amped to re enact the “dragon fire” scene between Thranduil and Thorin.” 18. Where can everyone see your work in Cosplay?

11. Would you say that you share a likeness or personality to the characters you Cosplay? “Certainly! In fact I won’t cosplay a character I don’t feel I have some kind of likeness to. I try to pick a character I not only like or look like, but also ones I can understand and become.”

“Sliding Doors’ Cosplay and Arkham SA on fb.” 19. Any words of advice and inspiration you would wanna give the readers? “Never give up! Never surrender! Stay awesome bros XD”

12. Name 5 of your favourite Cosplays. “Geez of the ones I’ve done, I’d have to say Ronan the Accuser, Starlord, Oberyn Martell, Solas and The Joker will always have a special place to hold.”

I would like to thank Devin Green from Sliding Doors’ Cosplay again for taking the time to do this interview with us for April’s issue.

Cosplay How To's

Make small items for your costume can be hard if you don't know where to start, today we show you how to create claws for your from scratch for your costumes with hardened glue. To use this technique you will need: Clay or molding putty A glue gun Glue Stick A pair of scissors Vaseline

Finding a decent set of claws may be expensive or even impossible in South Africa, that is why we suggest you make your own using glue which is flexible and maintains shape in almost any condition. It also makes attachment super easy. Step One First you will need the claw mold. Take your clay or molding putty and create the claw itself, you can use this mold for all of the claws or create multiple if the claws are going to look defferent based on which finger they fit onto. Bake the clay to allow the claw to harden. Now you will need to create a negative mold around the claw, using two half molds is best as long as they align properly when complete. Bake these to and leave them out to cool down. Now you will have a mold that you ca reuse as often as you like. :) Step Two When you remove the glue claws from the mold you will need to have a release agent that stops the glue from sticking to the mold. This would be your vaseline. Apply the vaseline to both sides of the mold making sure you don't miss any spots or the glue will stick to the mold. Step Three Apply a thick layer of hot glue to both molds and press them together. Now fill the rest of the claw in with glue and lwt it dry before removing it from the mold. Step Four Use a pair of scissors or razor blade to cut away at the seam and trim off any imperfections. Use a bit of heat to seal the seam and tada, you have your first claw. Repeat until you have enough for your costume. Be careful not to use Low Temp glue as the claws may melt in hot weather and in prolonged bodily contact.

Gaming Lore: Is the industry still focused on this? For such a long time, the gaming world has been a vibrant, creative and "free for all" area. Every developer tried to come up with unique ideas not only for actual game content, but also game mechanics. Over the years however, this has somewhat waned as ever more popular genre's have developed and gamers show the developers what works and what simply does not. Now, in a sense this is a good thing, because we, the gamers get what we want from our games. But, and this is a big one, what did we lose or sacrifice along the way to get here? Now admittedly, in the past there have been titles with amazing back stories. Players naturally flocked to them because of it. Even if the game itself had little merit to it, the game was all the better because the story behind it was just that good. So what makes a good title? A popular style game like DOTA or COD or a derivative of it? In other words, taking a winning recipe and copying it? An in足depth story driven game that lacks game mechanics and has shallow playability? Game designers find themselves more and more challenged to keep up with an ever demanding group of people. So, finding the balance between game and story is tricky at best. When titles do hit the shelves that get it right though, some incredible

60

All Otaku Magazine Issue 13

things happen. Take for example a favoured genre: The Elder scrolls. Throughout the development of five extrememly succesful titles, the game never lost any of it's fundamentals. It stuck to what worked for it, what the gamers wanted from it, and made improvements to existing game mechanics. The game, even though the fighting/magic mechanics are still pretty much the same since Morrowind, enjoys enormous success simply because of this: The storyline is both in足depth and amazing. Soon after hitting the shelves, the game transcended the confines of a game and touched the lives of the gamers playing it. Songs were made or duplicated from the game, cosplayers make absolutely amazing armor and gear from the game, individual fan based stories emerge from the game, it took on a life all on it's own. Another good example of this is Warcraft. From Warcraft: Orcs vs Humans all the way through to World of Warcraft, it has enjoyed incredible success because it balanced both game and story with infinite precision. Players today still rant and rave about raids, adventures, cosplays etc they did and it fill their lives with joy. The question though is this: "Is the industry still focused on this?" Are they still making games with this in mind? Fewer and fewer titles hit the shelves nowadays with good lore in them. More and more games only have between 5足10 hours of actual gameplay. A good game of Dragon Age, or Skyrim or even Final Fantasy can last from 80 hours up! Personally, when I look at a game and read the reviews I always check to see some mention of the length of game content. If I read something along the lines of: "I finished the game in 8 hours." I will not even consider taking out the cash to buy the game. It is simply not worth it for me. I want a game that is worth my time and my money. I want a game that I can get lost in. I want a game that involves me, as a player and captures my imagination. How about you? 足 Beleran

Unagi

The Japanese Eel dish we all want to try

Eel is a popular topping for sushi and makes a great meal on it's own with rice.

As exotic as it may sound, I’m sure most of you have tried unagi (Japanese freshwater eel) at least once. Unagi sushi is a very popular item at Japanese restaurants in the U.S. Since the fish is cooked, with sweet sauce glazed on top, it can be an entry point to the world of sushi for many beginners. Unagi is one of the most popular and also luxurious fish in Japan. Good unagi is expensive and considered as delicacy. Yet, instead of eating just a slice or two on a tiny piece of sushi rice, we tend to eat almost half a fillet on a bed of rice in Donburi (big rice bowl!) While people in Japan can make most seafood at home, we almost always buy cooked unagi at stores or restaurants. It is very rare to see fresh eels at regular stores. It requires special skills to fillet, debone, skewer, and grill to perfection. Most unagi these days are farm raised. There are many famous and popular restaurants that specialize only in unagi throughout Japan, especially near the lakes where unagi is raised. You can see many people lining up around lunch time and many of them drive from miles away seeking the best quality unagi. The taste of fresh Unagi Don near the lake is heavenly… I still dream about that flavor even though it was years ago! Unagi (Japanese fresh water eel)We can buy vacuum

Pour some sauce on top of the fish. Sprinkle on Sansyo Japanese pepper on top (optional.) Serve immediately. Unagi Don (Unagidon) Recipe

History Tonkatsu was originally considered a type of yōshoku (Japanese versions of European cuisine) invented in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Back then it was called katsuretsu (cutlet) or simply katsu. Variations Several variations of tonkatsu use alternatives to pork: Chicken katsu, which uses chicken instead, often appears in Hawaiian plate lunches. Menchikatsu or Minchi Katsu, is a minced meat patty, breaded and deep fried. Hamu katsu, a similar dish made from ham, is usually considered a budget alternative to tonkatsu. Gyū katsu, also known as bīfu katsu, is popular in the Kansai region around Osaka and Kobe. Saengseonkkaseu is a Korean fish cutlet modeled on the Japanese dish. Tonkatsu in Korea is known as donkkaseu or donkaseu. A similar cuisine with ingredients other than pork, beef or chicken is called furai (fry), not katsu (cutlet), such as ajifurai (fried horse mackerel) and ebifurai (fried prawn).

Paper Lanterns Light The Way By:Joannah Stewart

Japanese Culture

ANDON:

The expression hiru andon, or "daytime lamp," meant someone or something that seemed to serve no purpose Paper lanterns are not specifically an Asian thing but today we will be looking at Japanese paper lanterns and the history behind them. These beautiful lanterns are made from paper or silk, with frames made of bamboo or wood that house candles or oil lamps. Traditional paper lanterns were made to look like things from nature or myth in the spirit of local culture but today lanterns are made in many different shapes: from traditional dragons to pop icons. The paper lantern is used to symbolize joy, celebration, good fortune and longevity, in all Asian cultures and they are said to act as protectors from evil. The two types of lantern we are looking at today will be the andon and the chōchin. The Andon most commonly used oil to burn, grapeseed oil was a popular choice as it was cheaper than candles but if there was a shortage of grapeseed oil one would use sardine oil instead. The Andon was popular in the Edo period and was originally handheld; it was also be placed on a stand or hung on a wall outside your home.A variation was created called the Enshū andon. It is tubular in shape and had an opening instead of a drawer by which you could light the lamp. Another variety was the Ariake andon, a bedside lamp. The kakeandon under the eaves of a shop, often bearing the name of the merchant, was a common sight in the towns. The chōchin is made with a frame of split bamboo wound in a spiral. The spiral frame allowed you to collapse the lamp into the basket at the bottom. The chōchin hangs from a hook at the top. The earliest

66

record of a chōchin dates to 1085 where shop owner would use it due t it's easy storage. The Japanese would use the lanterns as a form of advertisement to, by painting the name of a product or food on the lanterns they could show their buyers what was sold in their store. Festival Days Paper lanterns are a common theme in Asian festivals, one example being the Obon Festival that takes place from the 13th to the 15th either in July or August depending on region. The most important part of the lantern ceremony revolves around people returning to their ancestral homes which is why it is common for people in Japan to take time off work to travel back to their homes. Once there, elaborate lanterns are lit in order to guide the family spirits home. These lanterns are often created especially for the yearly ceremony and once the lanterns have been lit, the joyful celebration begins. Feasts are held at this time and food is offered not only to the living, but also to the dead. Doing good in the name of the family's ancestors is seen as a credit to their spirits, which ensures them a better afterlife.
