MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR Welcome to the MBA of ISEG – Lisbon School of Economics and Management! A Master in Business Administration is a truly unique educational programme, both in terms of its depth and also its impact on the transformation of the professional and personal life of those who have the courage to study for it. The uniqueness of the ISEG MBA also stems from the fact that it is the only MBA programme taught in the entire Universidade de Lisboa, which, among its 18 Schools, has long been the main reference for Portugal among the international rankings of higher education institutions. Its accreditation by the Association of MBAs, together with the ongoing determined effort by the School to obtain another external certification - AACSB, are further factors that contribute to the responsibility which I, as the MBA Director, feel I have to the University and to ISEG, the business community in general, and, above all, to our students. During the fourteen years that I have been involved with the ISEG MBA, I have had the opportunity to witness a number of changes to the programme, and also the chance to implement some of these changes. In the best tradition of the former Universidade Técnica, this MBA stands out for its solid education in management skills, which include modules on Finance, Marketing, Accounting, and Operations Management, among others. I should also mention that the course programme has been brought up-to-date, with the introduction of various subjects especially designed for the development of leadership, communication, and team management skills. In fact, today, an MBA is no longer just intended to improve managerial skills, but it also has as an objective the development and education of people management skills, and of knowing how to influence and guide them in the desired direction of the organisation and of its leaders. The last pillar of modernisation of this Master is innovation and entrepreneurship, which reflects ISEG’s own vision and mission: ‘open minds for a changing world’. This last focus of the MBA is based on firm conviction that Portugal and the Portuguese business community need professionals who are capable of operating and leading the transformations that are imposed on the country. Indeed, it is to these people that I address these last lines. The participants of our MBA combine high quality management and leadership skills with significant commitment and motivation, as well as the drive and restlessness that characterises those who want to build a better future, and not just sit back and watch it develop. If you think that you have this innovative and enterprising spirit, and also the desire to participate and lead in this vast process of change which faces Portugal and its society, then this is the MBA for you.

Artur Carvalho —

Bachelors in Pharmaceutics Postgraduation and Master in Marketing MBA from ISEG

With a background in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Marketing, I felt that I had some gaps in my knowledge of Management throughout my professional career. After taking the decision to study for an MBA, the choice for ISEG was too easy, being part of Universidade de Lisboa ensures quality. It came to pass that this was the right decision. In addition to the theoretical content, which greatly contributed to increasing my hard skills, of undeniable added value was the opportunity to experience appropriate outdoor training, culminating in the Silicon Valley Immersion Programme at San Francisco University. However it would be totally unfair if I did not mention that the most enriching factor was the human component, particularly of all my colleagues, who contributed to a more complete learning process by sharing other experiences and professional realities. Although demanding, I can now say that the ISEG MBA has been a plus in my career, making me a more complete professional.

ISEG MBA

Nuno Sousa —

Bachelors in Architecture MBA from ISEG

I felt the need to study for an MBA as a way of improving a set of skills that I had acquired through my professional career to date, as well as to open new horizons, with the possibility of a job change, more oriented to the area of Management. The group of professionals that studied alongside me for the MBA, together with the diversity of areas and perspectives, in association with the infrastructures provided by ISEG and its teaching staff, helped to strengthen all that we learned with the challenges and projects that were presented to us. I would highlight the team building exercises that were carried out off-campus, especially those with the Air Force and Navy, which consolidated the classroom learning. This highly enriching experience resulted in a cohesive and promising outlook for my future.

14

IMMERSION PROGRAMME IN SILICON VALLEY Provides participants with skills for developing strategies in areas such as entrepreneurship, innovation, and business creation, as well as those skills required for intrapreneurship, i.e., the creation of a business within an organisation. Includes meetings with key Silicon Valley players, sustained by rigorous academic and practical content.

Ana Lúcia Conceição —

Bachelors in Chemistry Postgraduation in Marketing MBA from ISEG

After a Postgraduation in Marketing, I decided that if one day I was to further my studies on my own initiative, then it would only make sense to study for an MBA. Ten years later, I began to feel that I was stagnating, and this is what led me to research the offers of Business Schools. I opted for ISEG, on account of its accreditations, teaching staff, the fact that it was evening classes, and also that the immersion week in Silicon Valley at the University of San Francisco is an unforgettable experience, with a balanced cost/benefit ratio. A great deal of dedication is necessary for the lectures, group work, exams, and preparation of cases, but every hour invested is worth it. Today I feel empowered and prepared to face challenges of greater responsibility, and for this the technical and soft skills learned from the ISEG MBA contributed a lot, as does the network established. The different backgrounds of colleagues are also enriching and contribute to greater learning, debate, and idea generation.

San Francisco, EUA

17

ISEG MBA

THE OPINION OF THOSE WHO KNOW In addition to ISEG being a reference in the academic panorama of Portugal, it has been an educational incubator for some notable economists over the years, and is also undoubtedly a reference that constitutes an asset for any professional career and for any curriculum. For those who study for an MBA, the personal and professional enrichment and life-long experience is an intangible benefit which, I am sure, any former ISEG MBA is aware of and lets others know about. No MBA student ends up the same, but rather they emerge better or bigger. As it faces changes at this stage in its history, Portugal lacks professionals who are well-educated in numbers and grounded with a social concern for its citizens. It’s a win-win choice.

Ana Loya

— Managing Partner of RAY Human Capital and Member of the Strategic Board of the ISEG MBA

MBA CAREER WEEK An annual networking event that aims to increase ISEG MBA students’ employability, providing opportunities for them to establish contact with recruitment companies and the heads of Executive Search and Headhunting companies. Henrique ArmÊs —

Bachelors in Veterinary Medicine Masters and PhD in Veterinary Science MBA from ISEG

The experience was great, right from the beginning, as was the contact with other areas of activity and with colleagues currently working in these areas, as it is fundamental to have a strong network of contacts, especially for those who manage and run companies, which is my case. My academic background area of science is very technical, and my basic skills have nothing to do with the core skills of a manager, or of someone who works in the area of Economics, and thus, for me, it was very fruitful to be able to bring together my area, which is very technical and very clinical, with the areas of Management and Economics. The MBA is very generic and very practical, and it is important to mention that the knowledge learned goes beyond the borders of the University. Furthermore, this is a multidisciplinary course, where the skills of colleagues are not limited to just Economics. For in this increasingly globalised world, the knowledge gained by studying a course such as the MBA is much more than that which is just taught at university level, and in this sense, through the mix of students with a great variety of skills, one is able to form and create a crucial network of contacts, which is so important nowadays.

THE STRATEGIC BOARD The ISEG MBA counts on the support of a Strategic Board, comprised of several leaders of well-known businesses and other influential personalities from current society, which regularly reviews the contents of the programme and suggests innovative changes to adjust the productivity of the course to the demands of the market.
