Civil engineering. I spent my apprenticeship as a groundworker and JN Bentley supported me massively throughout the course. I am now studying towards an additional qualification in civil engineering whilst working as a Site Engineer.

WHAT IS CIVIL ENGINEERING? Civil engineering is part of the construction industry; it is the design, construction and maintenance of infrastructure - things like roads, bridges, tunnels, railways and coastal walls. JN Bentley primarily works in the water and waste water industry which means a lot of the infrastructure we design, construct and maintain includes sewage treatment works, reservoirs, pipelines and costal/flood defences. Our civil engineers turn plans into reality and are responsible for ensuring that projects are completed to a high quality and within the given timeframe. They also play an important role in managing health and safety on sites, as well as looking after the environment.

By completing a level 2 apprenticeship in general construction operations you’ll gain experience of what it’s like to work out on site.

You could start an apprenticeship at level 3 and learn about key engineering principles and aspects of construction management.

WHAT IS QUANTITY SURVEYING? Our quantity surveyors play an important role in managing the commercial side of construction projects, working to minimise the total cost of the project to the business and maximising the value received, whilst still meeting required standards and levels of quality. Our quantity surveyors split their time between working in the office and out on site, preparing payments and internal cost reports as well as managing relationships with various stakeholders in order to meet deadlines. If you have a practical mind and strong maths/ numerical skills then a career as a quantity surveyor could be ideal for you.

Our mechanical engineers play in important role in planning and programming the mechanical works for projects, working to minimise the total cost of the project to the business and maximising the value received, whilst still meeting required standards and levels of quality. Mechanical engineering is more integral to what we do than ever. General construction operations. Completing an apprenticeship in general construction is hands on but it also means you can earn while you learn; and working at JN Bentley no two days are the same.

WHAT IS GENERAL CONSTRUCTION OPERATIONS? Many people in the construction industry have started out as a General Operative before progressing into other roles, so it’s a great way to start your career. A role in general construction operations is hands on from day one and will involve working outdoors on projects on behalf of our clients. General duties include groundworking, formworking, steel fixing, steel piling, concreting and road working. You’ll have the opportunity to work on a wide range of civil engineering and construction projects everything from the construction of new sewage treatment works to the upgrading of existing spillways and reservoirs to laying new pipelines.

There’s the opportunity to specialise in a trade and complete an additional level 2 apprenticeship.

WHAT IS PROCUREMENT AND PLANT? Procurement covers three departments in plant, materials and sub-contract buying. They are responsible for purchasing all goods and plant, and the majority of services across the business – everything from pipework to ready-mix concrete to security guards, landscapers and scaffolders.

They work closely with our operational and site teams as well as the supply chain to deliver best value and solutions that help keep the business and projects moving. WHAT IS ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE? Our accounts and finance team are responsible for managing all of the company’s money; recording all income and expenditure so we know how much profit we’re making. They have an important job in making sure our suppliers and subcontractors are paid on time as well as tracking payments from our clients to make sure we always have enough cash to pay our outgoings.

WHAT IS BIDDING AND ESTIMATING? With a multi-million pound turnover and a growing workforce, our bidding and estimating teams are vital in ensuring there is a constant flow of work into the business. The teams are a vital part of the support function and play an important role in securing new work for the business whether this is a one off project or repeat business - successful wins can see us secure future work for the next five or even ten years.


The role can vary from putting together project plans, calculating costs required to meet the client’s specifications to representing the company at site visits and meetings with prospective clients and providing general administrative support to the wider team.

Assessment centres are a really good way for us to get to know our applicants a bit better. We’ll challenge your teamworking and problem-solving skills – just two important aspects of working with us.

Because we don’t like to keep people hanging on for an answer, we aim to let you know if you’ve been successful within a day or two.

We’ll tie an interview in to the same day so you don’t have to visit us twice and – as before – we’ll let you know if you’ve been successful within a couple of days.
