Welcome to JMU softball. JMU softball is recognized as one of the top programs in the conference and in our region. I encourage you to consider JMU as an upand-coming program on the national level. We look to contend for a conference title and advance to the NCAA Tournament every year. Facilities are a big indication of the university’s overall dedication to a program’s success and we are very fortunate here at JMU. In 2010 the university opened Veterans Memorial Park - a $9.5 million state-of-the-art baseball and softball facility. The lighted complex has a modern press box, pro-style dugouts with restrooms, six pitching bullpens, two batting cages, a hitting practice area, ticket office, concessions, JMU merchandise sales and separate bathrooms for baseball and softball fans. A complete indoor facility is adjacent to the stadium inside Memorial Hall which houses coaches’ offices, locker rooms, a softball team room, strength and conditioning areas, indoor practice cages, athletic training room and a study hall area. All of the support areas for our student-athletes are in one building. James Madison University provides the opportunity to get a first-rate education and to play Division I athletics. Our players challenge themselves in the classroom and on the ball field against the nation’s best. They have a wonderful experience as students, as athletes and as members of the community. JMU’s softball game day atmosphere is amazing for fans and for our players. Please take time to read through our guide and learn more about JMU and the Dukes softball program. • First year at JMU and seventh year overall as a head coach • Second softball coach in JMU history • Came to JMU after six seasons at Radford • 241-116 record as the head coach of the Highlanders for a .675 winning percentage • Went 84-21 in Big South Conference play, winning the regular season title four times and the Big South Tournament twice • Four-time Big South Coach of the Year • Took his team to the NCAA Regionals in both 2009 and 2010, including a Regional Final appearance in 2010 • Two-time VaSID State Coach of the Year • Has coached 14 NFCA/Louisville Slugger AllRegion selections and one All-American • Prior to arriving at Radford, served as an associate head coach at Longwood and an assistant coach at Indiana and Akron • Also served as the head coach of Lake City Community College (Fla.) and won an NJCAA National Championship with a 65-5 record • Served as the head coach of the Chicago Bandits in the National Pro Fastpitch league, winning the regular season championship five times and the World Championship in 2008 • Three-time NPF Manager of the Year • Served as the pitching coach of the Venezuelan National Team from 2002-08 • Helped Venezuela qualify for its first-ever Olympic Games in Beijing China in 2008

• First year at JMU • Spent three seasons as an assistant at Radford prior to coming to JMU • Served as Radford’s recruiting coordinator • During her time with the Highlanders, team went 110-59 overall, including a 48-9 mark in the Big South Conference • Radford won three Big South Regular Season crowns during her tenure and Coach Dean was named Big South Coach of the Year three times • Also coached for a season at her alma mater, Roanoke College • Graduated from Roanoke College in 2008 • At Roanoke College, she was a four-time All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference • Ranked in the top ten for the Maroon in sacrifice hits (2nd, 41), batting average (3rd, .383), assists (5th, 233), hits (7th, 180), and runs (7th, 135) • Helped Roanoke win ODAC Championships in 2005 and 2006 and earn NCAA Regional bids in both seasons • Roanoke went 118-38 in her time as a Maroon
• Frist year at JMU • Came to JMU after spending seven seasons as the head coach at UNC Greensboro • Won 173 games at UNCG and led the Spartans to their first-ever appearance in the Southern Conference Championship game. • Four times in her seven seasons, UNCG upset the SoCon’s top-seeded team, including becoming the first ever No. 8 seed to beat the No. 1 seed • Coached 24 NFCA Scholar-Athletes and 21 Academic All-Southern Conference selections • Recruited and coached UNCG’s career leader in hits and strikeouts, as well as coaching two members of Puerto Rico’s national team and one Canadian junior national team member • 12 players were named to the AllSoCon team and four were named to the All-Freshman team • Seven of her players were named to the SoCon AllTournament team, including the tournament MVP in 2010 • Also served as an assistant coach at Charlotte and a graduate assistant coach at East Tennessee State • Played at Charlotte from 1997-2001 where she was a four-year letterwinner and a NFCA All-America ScholarAthlete

A Great College Town Harrisonburg is convenient to the metropolitan areas of Washington, D.C., and Richmond while providing JMU students the comforts of the picturesque setting of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. The city offers something for everyone. From downtown shopping and restaurants, to nearby national parks and forests, it provides JMU students the opportunity to sample many aspects of life. Harrisonburg offers a learning environment that is very unique in today’s high-tech, educational world.

Veterans memorial park • In the spring 2010, JMU opened Veterans Memorial Park, a $9.5 million baseball and softball complex located next to Memorial Hall. • The project included a $1 million interior renovation to Memorial Hall that covered new offices for coaches, locker rooms, team rooms, areas for strength and conditioning, as well as sports medicine, indoor practice space and batting cages. • The softball stadium includes lights, a press box, sunken dugouts, chair-back seating, and a state-of-the-art sound system. • The new facility was built on the same site as the old Veterans Memorial Stadium, which opened in 1949. The new site retained the name Veterans Memorial in honor of all the veterans of foreign wars from Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. • The entrance includes a monument to war veterans. The monument was dedicated on Veterans Day weekend in the Fall of 2009. • First softball game was played on March 17, 2010. It was a doubleheader that included a come-frombehind win by the Dukes over Longwood.
