Pound for pound, no other band does what Pink Martini does. With the combined power of a dozen musicians with songs in 25 languages, the self-described “little orchestra” performs a rollicking cross-genre mix of classical, jazz, and old-fashioned pop The Washington Post called “rich, hugely approachable, utterly cosmopolitan yet utterly unpretentious... it seems to speak to just about everybody.” Their joyous performances sell out all over the world! Since 1994 the group has built a monstrous fan base with performances from the Cannes Film Festival, the Hollywood Bowl, and the grand opening of Los Angeles’ Walt Disney Concert Hall to late-night television with David Letterman - and even a video greeting to the astronauts aboard the International Space Station. Fronted by the dynamic vocalist China Forbes, Pink Martini has performed with over 70 of the world’s great orchestras, sold over 3 million albums, and recorded 15 full-length albums and Eps.

ALL THINGS EQUAL –THE LIFE AND TRIALS OF RUTH BADER GINSBURG
BY RUPERT HOLMES
Wednesday, November 1 @ 8 pm
Thursday, November 2 @ 8 pm MAINSTAGE THEATRE
All Things Equal - The Life and Trials of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a new play by multiple-Tony Award-winning playwright Rupert Holmes (Curtains - 2007, Say Goodnight Gracie - 2003, The Mystery of Edwin Drood – 2003) is a fascinating and humorous portrayal of the Supreme Court Justice, a true American original. Theatergoers will marvel at Ginsburg’s strength, tenacity, sly wit and compassion, her yearning for equality, and her love for this nation’s precious institutions. All Things Equal is an intimate look at RBG’s life and trials: being one of only nine young women studying law at Harvard while also raising a daughter and helping her husband battle cancer, fighting for women’s rights in the 1970s before all-male courts, and taking courageous stands for human rights amid an increasingly politicized Supreme Court.

ALLAN POE
Friday – Saturday, November 10 – 11 @ 8 pm
Sunday, November 12 @ 2 pm
MAINSTAGE THEATRE
Edgar Allan Poe’s famous horror story has fascinated poets, dramaturgs, and composers for decades. American opera’s most influential 20th-century composer has transformed a gothic tale by a 19th-century master of the macabre. The result is spellbinding! Premiering in 1988, the opera is one of Glass’ most popular, and the hauntingly beautiful music captures every nuance and blood-curdling nerve of Poe’s story. When a man visits his ill childhood friend, Roderick Usher, he is shaken by the foreboding sense of evil that pervades the household’s inhabitants. His attempts to understand and address the literal and figurative “illness” that permeates Usher’s house fail at every turn, and he is unable to deter Usher, his sister Madeline, and the house itself from their swift descent into the abyss.

KITKA
Friday, March 22 @ 8 pm
CONCERT HALL
A women’s vocal ensemble like no other, the critically acclaimed Kitka, blends a contemporary sensibility with specialized vocal techniques from Eastern Europe that have been distilled over centuries. “The shimmering sounds of Kitka are cloth of gold thread in a sumptuous musical tapestry.” (San Francisco Examiner) Using only the pure unaccompanied voice, they create a constantly shifting landscape of sound, pulsing with angular rhythms, where dramatic dynamics leap from delicate stillness to shattering resonance, and unisons explode into lush incomprehensible chords. Kitka has “amazing harmonies…this is the most wonderful singing I have ever heard.” (David Crosby, CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH) The ensemble has produced 14 critically acclaimed recordings, soundtracks for major motion pictures and independent films, and a PBS television special.
“...a veritable feast for the ears, the eyes, and the mind. ”

DANCE NATION BY
CLARE BARRON
Tuesday – Saturday, April 23 – 27 @ 8 pm
Sunday, April 28 @ 2 pm
MAINSTAGE THEATRE
Somewhere in America, an army of pre-teen competitive dancers plots to take over the world. And if their new routine is good enough, they’ll claw their way to the top at the Boogie Down Grand Prix in Tampa Bay. But in Clare Barron’s raucous pageant of ambition and ferocity, these young dancers have more than choreography on their minds, because every plié and jeté is a step toward finding themselves, and a fight to unleash their power. The New York Times calls this a “Critic’s Pick! A blazingly original play.” The play examines the challenges and triumphs of growing up, coming of age, and finding one’s soul in the heat of it all and interrogates what “womanhood” is, and embodies a powerful release of rage, joy, and liberation. Featuring students from JMU’s School of Theatre and Dance. Contains adult language, adult and sexual content.

HANBOK SAENGWAL: KOREAN FASHION THEN AND NOW
November 7 – March 8
The art of hanbok (Korean traditional dress) is one that spans hundreds of years. Its history is marked by innumerable changes due to transformations in fashion, society, and the nation itself. Yet, the art of hanbok persists, and today has seen a dramatic revival thanks to the impact of Korean pop culture. Hanbok saengwal – the practice of making, wearing and enjoying hanbok – is designated as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage due to the mastery of tailoring, weaving, and decorative techniques required of artisans. This exhibition invites visitors to enjoy different types of hanbok created by Professors Suntae Hwang and JungOk Um and to consider the connection between fashion and identity.

Dates are selected in consultation with the MAC staff and the purchaser. Only three “White Glove Tour” events are held each year to support the conservation efforts of the MAC.
