TIME BANK IN ALONSO MARTÍNEZ, MADRID Master Thesis project, September 2011

A time bank is a system of services’ exchange for time. In it, the unit of exchange is not money but a standard measure of time, such as work hours. It’s a system of exchange of services for services or favours for favours. It has the advantage of encouraging social relationships and equality between different social classes.

THE CLOUD, MADRID Commission. Built. Ensamble Studio, June 2012

The Cloud is a dense space built with a very light material, it is 98% air. Based on 7 modules of identical massive volume: 2.4 x 6 x 2.4 m., each of them is shaped differently to generate a unique space, thus getting: the stage, the patio, the step, the circus, the cinema, the assembly and the scale. 7 spaces as the 7 notes that compose the musical scale, which combined together produce very different sets of sounds, multiple scenes that accommodate simultaneously reading, playing, rest or conversation activities. The material that shapes each module, expanded polystyrene, is assembled in a massive way ensuring optimal mechanical performance, and is protected with a layer of resin that completes the construction system providing what the foam does not have: stability, durability and colour. The lightness of this technology makes movable what would otherwise be immovable, facilitating the handling of the pieces and their necessary mobility. The Cloud is a space within a space. Designed to be placed in the Reader’s House, in Madrid’s Old Municipal Slaughterhouse, it is architecture at the scale of children between 1 and 12 years old, where the youngest ones discover a universe custom-made, to develop and learn, to hide, to escape, to create and recreate, finally in a space that plays by their rules. Author of the project: Antón García-Abril, Débora Mesa, Javier Cuesta. Project team: Sara Nunes, Valentina Marchetti, José María Lavena, Karlien Van der Linden, Aukje Gossens. Client: Fundación Germán Sánchez Ruipérez.

SPAINLAB, SPANISH PAVILION IN BIENNALE DI VENEZIA 2012 Exhibition. Built. Ensamble Studio, July 2012

Innovation and research are the themes that define the work of the seven teams and the seven installations that articulate SPAINLAB, an exhibition curated by the architects Anton Garcia-Abril and Debora Mesa (Ensamble Studio). Each of the seven participants will display his or her unique take on scientific processes used in achieving a certain balance between abstract concepts and their actual implementation, transcending the finished product so as to open a new window to the reasons and emotions that made them possible in the first place. SPAINLAB stems out of a clear strategy: proving that the true value of Spanish architecture does not lie as much in the final image it materializes, but showing instead that its real future demands support and attention to personal investigative processes. None of the seven installations tries to display certainties; on the contrary, all of them are but an excuse for each team to keep investigating, test its ideas, build prototypes of their work in progress and share their liveliest body of work.

ZIP TOWER, MILAN First prize. Schematic design. Ensamble Studio, September 2012

Milan Tower define a flexible housing system that is able to respond to both social and economical current and future demands. It is no longer a question of designing fixed layouts to optimize, and many times strangle, the square meters of our living space. It is a question of designing a versatile and generous space that is easy to configure, a space where many possible lives can happen; and in order to achieve this we have to be able to design the optimum frame that will enable this kind of space. Author of the project: Antón García-Abril, Débora Mesa, Javier Cuesta. Chief architect: Valentina Marchetti. Project team: Sara Nunes, José María Lavena, Elena Pérez, David Santamaría, Takuya Hosokai, Danae Haratsis, Jennifer Kurth. Client: Citylife Milan.

FLOWER TOWER, ZHENGZHOU Commission. Schematic design. Ensamble Studio, November 2012

Flower Tower is a flexible system that optimizes the construction of high quality office space. Its design takes as a useful reference the efficient and beautiful systems found in nature, in particular the flower, observing its form, its structure and its function, to achieve an equally balanced design. The result is a dynamic system, alive and adaptable, that feeds into the infrastructural network provided by the context becoming an active element of it. The structural scheme is simple but rich: a series of floor plates (calyxes), formed by 60 identical beams (petals), stack vertically connecting through their central core, where loads are transmitted to the ground. Perimeter structure tie the outer rings of the calyxes stabilizing the cantilevered structure. Petals are accurately engineered elements of great technological sophistication that contain everything the space needs. Author of the project: Antón García-Abril, Débora Mesa, Javier Cuesta. Chief architect: José María Lavena. Project team: Sara Nunes, Valentina Marchetti,Karlien Van der Linden, Aukje Gossens,Noelia García, Alberto Buldón, David Santamaria. Client: Zhengzhou City.

MIT CAMPUS, BOSTON Research project. Ensamble Studio, September 2013

MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), located in Cambridge, Boston, is a world-class educational institution. MIT was considered the best university of the world by the QS World Ranking 2012. MIT needs to implement innovative solutions to respond to current technologies and world organization, developing new programs and resources that make education universally accessible. MIT Campus consists of a by-pass, a linear city, 1 km long, wich develops MIT’s spine and cloud in Kendall Square where 13 new platforms appears with new faculty buildings. It organizes an structural corridor, a new public space and strategic collection of academic and non-academic uses. It’s a new vision of how MIT Campus should evolve to match its radically innovative education and research agendas to the architecture that contains them. Author of the project: Antón García-Abril, Débora Mesa, Javier Cuesta. Chief architect: José María Lavena. Project team: Valentina Marchetti, Ricardo Sanz, Alba Cortés, Giulia Rapizza. UNEVEN GROWTH EXHIBITION, MoMA, NEW YORK Research project. Exhibition. Ensamble Studio, October 2014

Ultralight Growth The instability of the ground, the need for spatial flexibility and the insecurity of tenancy, make the idea of growing light -technically, functionally and conceptually- suitable for home-grown neighbourhoods. POPlab is working in a series of ultra light construction systems -to be applied to build second and third levels in pre-existing structures- that can be easily appropriated and customized with available tools and materials and can be assembled and disassembled without incurring in big costs or efforts. Knowledge exchanges of these types can be very enriching for both researchers and home-grown settlement dwellers. Supra Growth As a reaction to the lack of public services and the dispirited character of “rehabilitation strategies” that indifferently erode pre-existing fabrics, POPlab proposes Supraextructures as a way of reclaiming the space of the air for even growth. Supraextructures are three-dimensional urban infrastructures which: touch the ground punctually connecting to other networks, build new levels –plots as flying carpets- for the city to expand, facilitate productive balances between public and private realms and service old and new residents. Learning from the ground they emerge, they enable growth at the scale of home-grown neighbourhoods, in the air, where new paths for incremental evolution are provided and the integration of different typologies, architectures, scales and -foremost- people aimed. Author of the project: Antón García-Abril, Débora Mesa. Chief architect: José María Lavena, Marie Benaboud. Project team: Ricardo Sanz, Massimo Loia, Borja Soriano, Simone Cavallo Client: MoMA, Museum of Modern Art of New York.

MASTERPLAN AND HOTEL RESORT, TENERIFE First prize competition. Corona-Amaral Arquitectos, March 2015

Puertito de Adeje has a privileged location 20 minutes away from Tenerife South International Airport, within the internationally known Costa Adeje and benefits from the best climate on the island . The site has convenient communication with Mount Teide National Park (40 minutes by car), Acantilado de Los Gigantes (30 minutes by car) and La Gomera island with Garajonay National Park (1 hour by ferry) besides many sport facilities and 2 golf courses in close by. Dematerialization and integration of architectonical volumes in nature is key to the thinking behind the project. In order to achieve this goal the main constructed masses of architecture are divided into different parts, a lower one directly inserted into the ground by means of the use of non aligned concrete beams in the outside facade , and an upper white and glass volumes creating a second layer. The whole composition is topped with small white and glass crystal boxes (viewpoints) related, in terms of scale, to the units of the existing fishing village. OCTOBER 11st, 2011.

Madrid, 2011 TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: José María Lavena Merino was a student of mine during his Final Architectural Project last year. I was so able to appreciate his interest in and dedication to the subject, as an expression of his desire to complete his training as an architect. He showed great determination to improve and worked hard thus progressing to finish the course most successfully. He was also an active participant in class and was obviously very interested academically. José María amply demonstrated good teamwork skills. He was a valued member of the workgroups with which he was involved and was appreciated by his fellow students as a naturally and adaptable positive person. He showed a great ability to work for the benefit of the group as a whole. I have been able to confirm his creativity and self-awareness, discipline and determination. At all times I have found him to be reliable and hard-working, completing his jobs with care, precision and ability. It has been a pleasure for me to maintain a friendly relationship with José María owing both to his qualities as a dedicated and interested student and his delightful personality. I told him in the highest regard personally and academically and therefore and it is with complete faith that I give him a strong vote of confidence and the highest recommendation. Yours, sincerely:

José María Lavena Merino has been a student of mine during the Architectural Projects course last year. The supervision of his academic work in this area enables me to say that José María demonstrated his ability as a competent and thoughtful student.
