Don your cross-country skis and traverse the old trails of Lewis and Clark, the pioneering adventurers sent by President Jefferson 200 years ago to explore the West. Second, at the southern end of the Bitterroot Valley, literally across the highway from Lost Trail Powder Mountain, is the Chief Joseph Cross-Country Ski Trail. These trails are maintained by the non-profit Bitterroot Cross Country Ski Club. For those looking for more of an adventure, the valley’s Bitterroot and Sapphire mountain ranges offer hundreds of miles of trails that climb deep into the wilderness. Some of these trails start at lower elevations than the trails at Lolo Pass and Chief Joseph, Maintenance Shack at Lolo Pass Ski Area hence the bottoms can be a bit icy or thin. Many skiers wait until after a big snowfall to ski them. Some hike up with their ski gear on a backpack in search of adequate snow cover. Visit the Forest Service’s web site for more information on ski trails and conditions. Cross country skiing adventures also lend themselves well to long weekend getaways. Several small resorts and bed and breakfasts are located near great Chief Joseph Pass - by Merle Ann Loman skiing. A decent meal in a warm cabin is the perfect end to a day of skiing. Accommodations range from romantic to family oriented, and from luxurious to discount venues. Some of the best skiing accommodations are located near Montana’s Glacier and Yellowstone national parks,. Though a bit of a drive for the day from the Bitterroot Valley, they are worth the trek for that special weekend away.

Big Timber is located near a geographical transition point. West of town, the Absaroka Range of the Rocky Mountains rises to lofty heights. To the east stretch vast Plains with rich soil and grasslands that are perfect for ranching and farming. The Crazy Mountains’ jagged summits rise to the north of Big Timber towering more than 11,000 feet providing a majestic back drop. Predominantly a livestock producing and recreational community, Big Timber is located at the confluence of two major rivers, the Boulder River (comprised of the East Boulder, West Boulder, and Main Boulder) and the Yellowstone River. Known internationally as premier fisheries, both rivers are destinations for recreationists from around the world. Many tributaries, including Sweet Grass Creek, Big Timber Creek, Upper and Lower Deer Creeks and Otter Creek flow from the nearby mountains into the Yellowstone and Boulder Rivers. Sweet Grass County was named for the “creek of fragrant grasses”. Sweet Grass -land of livestock knee-deep in good grass, sparkling clear water and air scented by sage and pine -- became a county in 1895. The history of this 1,849 square mile area goes back many years before that to the Indian tribes who hunted the area. Crow, Cheyenne, Blackfoot and raiding Sioux all claimed the area as hunting grounds. William Clark came through the region in 1806 on his way back from the Pacific. “Rivers Across” in his journal refers to the spot on the Yellowstone just below Big Timber where, directly across from one another, the Boulder River and Big Timber Creek empty into the Yellowstone. Clark named Big Timber Creek for the unusually large cottonwood trees growing by its mouth. 24

The early 1880s brought the railroad to the country. At its projected westward advancement for the winter of 1882, at the spot Clark named Rivers Across, a few enterprising individuals constructed the settlement of Dornix, meaning “large, smooth stones”. Unfortunately, due to an open winter, the railroad didn’t stop but continued on to the foot of the Bozeman Hill. To build the roadbed, vast numbers of ties were cut in the mountains during the winter, then floated down the creeks during spring high water to points on the railroad. Due to its location, Dornix was the logical spot for docking ties coming down the Boulder Big Timber’s Norwegian heritage River. However, Dornix was just below a hill; it was difficult for the trains to stop, load, and then make a standing start up the hill. In 1883, Dornix was moved lock, stock and barrel to its present site, a long, level expanse above the hill. Several years after the move, the railroad officials in St. Paul renamed it Big Timber. The Homestead Act, passed in 1862, gave 162 acres of land to every citizen over 21, or to the heads of the family who intended to become a citizen. This act, and the development of the railroad, brought many people out west to start a new life. Many Norwegians were drawn to Montana, attracted to the landscape that reminded them of their native homeland. Norwegians started their own communities in Sweet Grass County. Continued on page 29
