The signature event will be the first opportunity for residents of Montana and the inland Northwest to view and participate in dragon boat racing. “In Chinese astrology, 2012 is the Year of the Water Dragon—a year to celebrate strength and good fortune,” said Rob Brisendine, Kalispell Convention and Visitors Bureau group sales manager. “To celebrate our own community against the backdrop of the beautiful Flathead Valley, the Kalispell Convention and Visitors Bureau is pleased to host the first dragon boat race in Montana. We hope the event becomes an annual event enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.” Fifty-six teams and more than 1,200 participants from Colorado, Nevada, Texas, Washington, Montana, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia have signed up to participate. Each of the Hong Kong-style, 46-foot dragon boats—with a dragonhead at the bow and a dragon tail at the

with roots in China and is the eighth fastest growing sport in the world

All ages, abilities and physiques can participate, which makes the competition hinge upon teamwork and paddling style rather than brute strength. To organize the dragon boat races the Kalispell Convention and Visitors Bureau has partnered with Dynamic Dragon Boat Racing LLC, a producer of dragon boat races around the United States and the host of the 2010 U.S. Dragon Boat Club National Championships. The company has supplied the dragon boats and safety gear and will lead the required training sessions and races the day of the festival. “We’re very excited to help the Kalispell CVB introduce dragon boat racing to Montana,” said Penny Behling, owner of Dynamic Dragon Boat Racing, “and Flathead Lake is one of the most breathtaking settings you could think of for a dragon boat race.”


For many of the out-of-state dragon boat teams, it will be their first visit to Flathead Lake—the largest freshwater lake in the lower 48 states west of the Mississippi River, featuring 160 miles of shoreline. The dragon boat races will be held in the northeast corner of the lake at the Flathead Lake Lodge, one of Montana’s premiere lodges and known around the world for its Western hospitality. The lodge is a short drive from the urban hub of Kalispell and Glacier National Park. “Flathead Lake is one of the most stunning lakes in the world,” said Brisendine. “I think our guests will be blown away by the spectacular scenery.” While the festival is attracting interest from across the country and Canada, funds raised through the event are benefiting many western Montana organizations. In addition to a portion of each team registration going to Flathead Valley’s breast cancer awareness initiative Save A Sister, the title sponsor of the event, the Flathead Community Foundation, has also encouraged many local organizations and businesses to form teams and raise additional funds for worthy causes through pledges. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flathead County, A Ray of Hope, and Dream Adaptive Recreation are just a few of the organizations being supported by dragon boat team participants.

While in Yellowstone National Park, you will be inside the caldera of the largest active volcano in the world. Fall in Yellowstone is a very special time with light frosts on chilly nights, and pleasant warm days where you can breathe in the earthy scents of the Park. Bugling Elk, roaming herds of Buffalo, and lazy days spent touring the spectacular thermal features make fall one of the best times to visit Yellowstone. Normally, you have to make a reservation at one of the five major campgrounds well in advance of arrival. After Labor Day you probably will not need a reservation, but it is wise to call ahead. There are five major reservation only campgrounds: Bridge Bay, Canyon, Fishing Bridge RV Park, Grant Village, and Madison campgrounds. The first-come, first served campgrounds will be far more accessible after Labor Day and include: Indian Creek, Lewis Lake,

Mammoth, Norris, Pebble Creek, Slough Creek, and Tower Fall campsites. While in Yellowstone National Park, you will be inside the caldera of the largest active volcano in the world. There are more thermal features in Yellowstone than the rest of the world combined. There are over 15 miles of boardwalk for visitors to keep them safe from the dangerous thermal sites, and to minimize the inevitable human damage caused to the area. The park is a singularly impressive place and most of it resides above 7,500 feet elevation. Wildlife viewing is superb to say the least with buffalo, elk, and black-tail deer sightings a common occurrence. Moose, bear, coyote, and wolves are spotted less frequently. We enjoyed filming a giant moose scraping the felt from his antlers late one evening near the south entrance of Yellowstone. Hiking, camping, fishing, wildlife viewing, and touring the spectacular thermal features are a few of the many things to enjoy in Yellowstone. The beauty of the landscape is breathtaking and the clean smell of sage permeates the clear air.

One of the unadvertised features of Yellowstone is the night sky. A few of us old-timers remember the rich texture of the night sky from our youth. Reflected light effectively blocks clear viewing of the night sky in much of the United States, but at night in Yellowstone, the stars are displayed in their full majesty in the rich, dark sky. MTD
