Everyone knows the feeling, the itch to experience the first dry fly fishing of the year on Southwest Montana freestone rivers. The first spring hatch, a.k.a. the best dry fly fishing of the year, is the Big Hole River Skwala hatch.

About the Skwala Stonefly on the Big Hole

The Skwala stonefly makes it’s appearance as spring and the end of winter collide. Fly fisherman come from across the country to catch the big browns. On the Big Hole River this is around midApril. As the ice breaks free from the Big Hole and water warms to between 45-48 degrees for a consistent period of time, skwalas start to migrate to the banks of the Big Hole River to hatch. The Skwala is a size #8-#10 stonefly with an olive colored body. Like most stoneflies, Skwalas crawl onto rocky and brushy banks to hatch. Unlike most stoneflies 8

though Skwalas rarely fly in the air. These stoneflies tend to crawl across the water when they lay their eggs. Skwalas are hard to see in the water as they skitter with their wings closed on the surface.

Success Tactics for Fly Fishing the Skwala Hatch on the Big Hole River Three tactics are helpful to know if you come to the Big Hole River to fish the Skwala hatch. 1) What is the water temperature? If it has been ranging in the 45-48 degrees for a period of several days, Skwalas could be hatching. 2) Have the fish been eating Skwala nymphs the past several days? If so, adults are about to hatch. 3) If you walk the bank of the river and look at rocks, and willows do you see any stonefly shucks from hatched Skwalas or rising trout on the surface? If you have, definitely fish the dry fly.


Since this is the first hatch of the year with a sizable meal on the Big Hole, trout tend to key into Skwalas pretty quickly. These stoneflies are not in the same abundance on the Big Hole as Golden Stones or Salmonflies, but there are enough of them to make for some great fly fishing. Dry fly fishing tends to be the best in the tail outs of the runs along undercut banks, pools, and ice shelves. The lower third of the Big Hole River is where you will find the Skwalas. Typically the river is still frozen in April above Jerry Creek. You will find your best Skwala activity below the town of Melrose on the lower Big Hole River. This is not an easy hatch to catch so make sure you are keeping your eye out for the signs. This is a pre-runoff hatch, so it occurs when the Big Hole is warming up, but does not get so warm that snow starts to melt and blows out the river.

Timing of this hatch on the Big Hole is from April 1stMay 15th. Spring is a time of change, so you have to monitor river flows, temperatures, and weather conditions to catch the elusive Skwala. Experiencing a fly fishing vacation in Montana to catch this hatch is not to be missed. This is a great time to experience trout feeding with fury, as they eat their first stoneflies of the season. Other rivers in Montana that have Skwala hatches are the Bitterroot River and Clark Fork River in Western Montana. Take note that in Western Montana the Bitterroot River Skwala hatch occurs about 3 weeks earlier than other Southwest Montana Skwala hatches due to the valley floor being lower in elevation. MTD

Fly Fishing Montana’s Bighorn River: Trout, Big Trout, and Lots of Them by Patrick straub

The most easterly of Montana’s fine rivers, the Bighorn, may also be the finest in terms of numbers of fish, available guides and reasonable lodging, and fish per mile. With nearly 3000-5000 fish per mile it is no surprise the river is known for its fishing and its crowds. But don’t let the number of anglers you may see keep you from fishing this phenomenal tailwater.

Billings is the nearest major city and nearest airport with commercial service. There is a small airstrip in Ft. Smith that can accommodate private planes. Most anglers headed to the Bighorn travel through Billings, then Hardin. Hardin is a small town on the border of the Crow Indian Reservation. Hardin has no fly shops, but has several gas stations, fast food places, and a grocery. Anglers traveling from the south or east will want to supply-up in Sheridan, Wyoming as there is not a lot of services between Sheridan and Ft. Smith. There are a few small towns with a gas station, but not much in the way grocery stores, certainly no beer, wine or liquor as on the Crow Reservation the selling of beer, wine, or liquor is prohibited.

north, towering cottonwoods and subtle rocky ridges to west and east, the Bighorn’s beauty does not slap one in the face like other Montana streams. However its subtle lean-to look grows on visiting anglers to the point where the lack of snow-capped peaks and forested hillsides doesn’t detract from the beauty of the streamside trees and the mystery of the changing currents. In fact, the lack of majestic beauty on the Bighorn is certainly one of its appeals-this is a part of Montana that has seen very little change in the past fifty years, and with the influx of wealth into places like the Gallatin Valley and the Flathead Valley, the Bighorn’s lack of affluence is a respite for many anglers. The Bighorn also flows through the Crow Indian Reservation, however, due to a court ruling in 1981 the entire river is considered public and can be fished legally year-round and with a valid Montana fishing license. The majority of fishing on the Bighorn is with driftboats as the accesses points are spread out amongst the thirty or so miles of trout water. Of course the flows will be lower and high depending on time of year, snowpack, prolonged drought, and whatever mother nature can dish out. Flows above 7,000 CFS make it difficult to fish as the trout

From Afterbay to Bighorn (13 Mile) Fishing Access Site (FAS)

This stretch is the most fished stretch of river on the Bighorn. Some of the local guides and “lifers” on this river may even say these 13 miles may be the most fished 13 miles in Montana. Whether that is true or not, it doesn’t detract from the amazing buglife and fish numbers per mile in this stretch. This entire stretch is an easy float, however, if the fishing is good could make for a long day. A float can be shortened by launching at 3-Mile or floating the three miles from Afterbay to 3-Mile. Wading is possible and quite easy, however access on the west-side of the river is difficult as most of the land along the western shore is private and there are no public access points. stream access law allows anglers the travel along shore assuming they stay below the average high-water mark. Many anglers choose to float from area to area, anchor and wade the better spots. The river averages 150-250 feet in width with flows average in the 2000-3000 Cubic Feet Per Second (CFS) range. Rolling plains with sparsely places cottonwoods and willows are the backdrop for this section. Gravel and grass islands, with the oh-so inviting side-channels are found throughout the river. These islands create unique riffle corners, side channels, and dropoffs, and they are home to a wide array of wildlife. A low lying bluff of sandstone neighbors the river below Big Horn rapids and is the western shore until the Two Leggins access. Over time guides and anglers have created names for areas within a section. In this upper section some of the names bear resemblance to type of fishing one might expect-names like the Aquarium, Bay of Pigs, and the Glory Hole.

From Bighorn to Mallards Landing

The river from Bighorn to Mallards looks and feels identical to the upper stretch. It is approximately 9 river mile between access points. The number of fish per mile drop the further one travels downstream, but this stretch still warrants attention from anglers despite many guidebooks ignoring this section. Anglers can also access the river at the St. Xavier bridge. The rocky bluffs make up the bulk of the western shoreline and the eastern vista is flanked by rolling hills. This section of the river is tucked amongst tall cottonwoods and is a beautiful float despite lower numbers of trout per mile.

Brown trout dominate the lower section of the river and many anglers spend little or no time at all on this stretch. The fall may well be the best time of the year to fish the lower river as the big brows are the move in search of spawning grounds and to stock up on calories before the strenuous act of spawning. Cottonwoods dominate the scenery in this section of the river, which adds to the splendor of fishing this run in the fall. The sheer distance between access points, the subtle water characteristics, and draw of 5000 fish per mile merely 15 miles upstream keeps the anglers numbers low on this lower stretch.

From Two Leggins to Hardin and beyond

Anglers could have a scattering of decent water to fish, but slower currents, irrigation draws and in-flows, and the distance between access points are good reasons to avoid the river below Two Leggins. I

t ‘s a beautiful March morning as we pack up the little red car to head for Libby, Montana. I look up at the big blue Montana sky, momentarily contemplating driving the ninety-some miles from Kalispell to Libby. Leaning against the car hood, I take a deep breath, inhaling deeply, savoring the fresh clear mountain air before climbing inside the car. It’s definitely cold this morning, with a bit of a bite, but nothing compared to the -20° F. wind chills a few days ago. Ahhh! I feel blessed to be alive. What a truly gorgeous day! There’s barely a cloud in the deep blue Montana sky, a perfect day for our road trip to Libby. On a day like today, I can’t imagine ever living in a big city. An acquaintance once told me there are three kinds of people in the world; those that love the ocean and beach, those that love the mountains and woods, and those that prefer cities. A city-lover herself, unbelievably, she once told me if she’d seen one mountain, she’d seen them all! I’m not sure where this analogy would leave flat low-landers, but I definitely am one of the mountain people!

US Hwy 2 West from Kalispell to Libby is scenic and winding. The roughened pavement is deeply grooved by heavy logging trucks frequenting this route. Parallel to the highway, T-style poles carry slightly-sagging telephone lines, a long dark scar across Mother Nature’s otherwise pristine snowy face. On the right of the road are lines of old wooden snow fences, built to help keep snow from drifting across the highway. The once functional wooden fences are now partially tumbled over, a testament to the heavy weight of too many snowfalls, too much wind, and the ravages of time. An occasional car or truck passes in the opposite lane, but we pretty much have the road to ourselves. It makes me ponder what life in the big city is like for a moment or two. That hectic man-made jungle could never compete for my heart like the beauty of Montana, or the wide open spaces where my soul soars free. On both sides of the road, open meadows are covered in snow, intermixed with woods of tall slender pines. Mother Nature, with her giant baking sifter decoratively sprinkled a fine white powdered sugar snow onto all their upturned branches; a scene perfectly befitting someone’s Christmas card. Deer tracks and animal trails can be spotted, too. They dash across pristine snowy white fields, reminding me that animals live here. I envision a sign reading, “Travel with caution: Deer may be crossing.” Please, help protect the Continued on page 21

I pause to glance down at my wristwatch and realize it is now nearly 9:30 am. My husband and I slept in, getting a late start. woodland’s furry creatures and drive a little more cautiously when traveling down this road! I sit back in my front passenger seat trying to get more comfortable. My back is hurting and it’s only 45 minutes since we left town. With another 45 minutes to go before reaching Libby, I try concentrating on the beautiful Montana day. I wish I had brought a notebook to record my thoughts. Grabbing a pen from my purse and an old telephone book from the side-door slot, I start scribbling thoughts on upside down yellow phone book pages, working my way forward from back to front. Then I stretch my seat belt momentarily so I can lean over and dig my camera out of its case on the back seat. I decide to try snapping a few pictures through the semi-dirty windshield to record the trip. It is then that I realize I have finally reached that point where I believe that yes, I must be a writer! I may always struggle with editing, but so what? That’s O.K. When I am surrounded by such awe-inspiring beauty, I can’t help but write down my thoughts and feelings. I am compelled to share the amazing beauty I witness with others. It is all around us, if we just open our eyes and look.
