Our museum’s heart, of course, is its collection. Containing testimonies of material and visual culture, the collection of the Jewish Museum Berlin displays years of research, offers vital communications, and commemorates the diversity of Jewish experience. For the museum’s founders in the 1970s, this primarily meant the history of Berlin’s Jews before the Shoah. From the turn of the millennium, however, attention shifted more toward the present and beyond the boundaries of Berlin. But we continue to think of our collection as a treasury of cultural history that covers the whole spectrum of images and objects: ritual artifacts; works of fine and applied art, architecture and photography; objects from everyday culture and economic history; audio and pictorial documents. These diverse artifacts enter the collection as gifts, purchases, or long-term loans. In the 16 years since the Jewish Museum Berlin Foundation was established in August 2001, we have been able to expand all areas of the collections—not only in terms of their quantity, but also in their historical and geographical breadth and, importantly, in their aesthetic quality and cultural significance. We have been able to present many of these new acquisitions to our visitors in special exhibitions, in the permanent exhibition, or online. This will continue to be the case. As we work on the shape of the new permanent exhibition, we are careful to ensure that we will always be able to show new items from the collection. And not least of all, we hope to acquire even more important pieces before the new permanent collection opens to the public. For several years now, it has been possible to research our holdings online. As such, the documentation and study of our collections will remain an important element of our work. In the long term, we see the collections—in combination with the archives and the library—as a hub for endeavors to assemble and research the material and visual culture of German Jews and Jews in Germany. Today, the Jewish Museum Berlin’s collections are at a watershed in two respects. First, we need to safeguard the testimonies of German-Jewish culture from the period before the Shoah. In line with the museum’s original mission, it will always be a core task to facilitate remembrance, through both the act of collecting and in the collections themselves; today, however, we see the last generation of eyewitnesses who are able to pass on objects to us fully embedded in their stories

In der Mitte der Institution Museum steht die Sammlung. Sie birgt die Zeugnisse der materiellen und visuellen Kultur und dient im Jüdischen Museum Berlin dazu, die Vielfalt jüdischer Erfahrungen zu erforschen, zu vermitteln und an sie zu erinnern. Dachten die Gründer*innen des Museums in den 1970erJahren dabei vor allem an die Geschichte der Berliner Juden vor der Schoa, so wandte sich der Blick seit der Jahrtausendwende stärker der Gegenwart zu und erweiterte sich über Berlin hinaus. Nach wie vor verstehen wir unsere Sammlung als kulturhistorische Sammlung, die das gesamte Spektrum von Bildern und Objekten umfasst: Zeremonialobjekte, Werke der bildenden und angewandten Künste, der Architektur und Fotografie, Objekte der Alltagskultur und Wirtschaftsgeschichte, Ton- und Bildaufnahmen. Wir erhalten sie durch Schenkungen, Ankäufe oder langfristige Leihgaben. In den 16 Jahren seit der Gründung der Stiftung Jüdisches Museum Berlin im August 2001 konnten die Sammlungen in allen ihren Bereichen erweitert werden, und dies nicht allein in ihrem quantitativen Umfang, sondern auch in ihrem historischen und geografischen Spektrum und nicht zuletzt in ihrer künstlerischen Qualität und kulturellen Bedeutung. Viele dieser neuen Erwerbungen konnten wir unseren Besucher*innen bereits in Wechselausstellungen, in der Dauerausstellung oder online präsentieren. Dies wird auch weiterhin der Fall sein. Bei der Konzeption der neuen Dauerausstellung achten wir darauf, immer wieder neue Stücke aus der Sammlung vorstellen zu können. Vor allem aber möchten wir bis zur Eröffnung noch weitere wichtige Stücke erwerben. Seit einigen Jahren sind unsere Bestände auch online recherhierbar. Die Dokumentation und Erforschung unserer Sammlungen wird weiterhin ein wichtiger Teil unserer Arbeit sein. Langfristig verstehen wir die Sammlungen – zusammen mit Archiv und Bibliothek – als ein Zentrum der Sammlung und Erforschung der materiellen und visuellen Kultur der deutschen Juden und der Juden in Deutschland. Heute stehen die Sammlungen des Jüdischen Museums Berlin in zweifacher Hinsicht vor einem Wendepunkt: Zum einen gilt es, die Zeugnisse der deutsch-jüdischen Kultur aus der Zeit vor der Schoa zu sichern.
