2020-2021 Scholarship Recipients
R e c i p i e n ts 2020-2021 SCHOLARSHIP & BROOKE FEGLEY JESSICA WEST
Brooke Fegley is graduating from Captain Shreve High School and plans to attend Texas A&M University in the fall. She is currently ranked third in her class with a cumulative GPA of 4.8. Over the course of her high school career, Brooke has accumulated over 375 hours of service to her community, and we have no doubt that had it not been for the lack of direct service opportunities due to COVID-19, this number would have been even higher. One of Brooke’s proudest accomplishments is the volunteer work she has done with Holy Angels since before sixth grade—teaching needlepoint to residents, providing them with a skill they can use to make money while living there. She has also volunteered with First Baptist Church School, Robinson Film Center, Friendship House, Common Ground, and the local Rescue Mission. Through Captain Shreve’s ZClub, she has contributed her time to service projects such as Gators for Good Carnival (a program that helps raise money for fellow Captain Shreve Gators in need) and Gator Cook Off, which raised funds to support Christmas and Easter learning festivals at Mooretown Elementary. Captain Shreve Librarian, Maureen Barclay, noted in her recommendation letter that she would “place Brooke in the top 1% of all students in her teaching career. Her character and integrity are unimpeachable.” Captain Shreve French teacher and Z-Club Sponsor, Carrie Loridans, said of Brooke, “She has chosen to be a good, kind, community-oriented student, and every decision she makes, she bases on this vision of herself. Brooke has challenged her clubmates to push forward and to keep serving their community.” Congratulations, Brooke! Jessica West is graduating from Airline High School and plans to attend Louisiana State University-Shreveport in the Fall, majoring in Early Childhood and Special Education. Since seventh grade, Jessica has completed over 700 hours of community service with at least 200 of those hours being served within her senior year. In reviewing Jessica’s scholarship application, it stuck out to the Board that much of her service was dedicated to populations similar to those we serve within the JLSB. From fundraising for Operation Christmas Child, to tutoring struggling students through her church, to addressing food insecurity through the preparation and serving of food at the Shared Harvest Community Kitchen—the needs of those in her community are clearly a top priority for Jessica. She has volunteered with Providence House, Heritage Manor Nursing Home facility, and the Knights of Columbus. Additionally, she developed a “Card for a Hero” initiative dedicated to writing and sending thank you notes to EMS, firemen, and police officers on 9/11. Finally, her love and dedication to those with special needs (stemming from her close relationship with a special needs brother and aunt who both live with her family) is remarkable. As Kendall Garner, Special Education Teacher at Apollo Elementary, wrote in her recommendation letter, “She has a heart for those students with special needs and approached each individual with care and patience… Her love and compassion for helping others is truly an inspiration.” Charles Adcox, Area Coordinator in Northwest Louisiana for Operation Christmas Child, wrote in his letter for recommendation, “I am humbled by this young lady’s love and compassion for others. She always places others’ needs above hers. She is intelligent, compassionate, loving, caring, and devoted.” Congratulations, Jessica!
