Don’t sweat the small stuff. Remember, most stuff is small. The most boring word in any language is “I.” Nobody is indispensable, even you. Life is full of surprises. Just say “never,” and you’ll see. People are always more important than things. Persistence will get you almost anything eventually. Nobody can make you happy. Most people are about as happy as they make their minds to be. There’s so much bad in the best of us, and so much good in the worst of us that it doesn’t behoove any of us to talk about the rest of us. Live by what you trust, not by what you fear. Character counts. Family matters... and sometimes you get to decide what family means. Television ruins more minds than drugs. Sometimes there is more to gain in being wrong than right. Life is so much simpler when you tell the truth. A good joke beats a pill for a lot of problems. There are no substitutes for fresh air, sunshine and exercise. A smile is the cheapest way to improve your looks, even if your teeth aren’t perfect. May you live in such a way that there is standing room only at your funeral. Forgive yourself. Forgive your friends. Forgive your enemies. You’re only human. If you don’t do anything else in life, love someone and let someone love you. Be kind, for everyone you meet is in the fight of their life. Stay in touch.

listen Teachers give words of advice for the graduating senior class.

mr. hensley A big thing I go by is that anything worth doing, is worth doing right. Don’t take shortcuts and cop outs. Expect greatness. Put forth great effort, BE GREAT!

ms. eichhorn

mr. reese

ms. glasco Never take anything for granted, especially after what happened this year. If there is a rare opportunity or an opportunity that will take you out of your comfort zone, and it is safe, say yes to it. Even if you never thought of it or it was not part of your plan, say yes to that opportunity because it will be an experience be it good, bad or both. Lastly, create a close-knit group of friends - friends that have positive energy and will be there for you through thick and thin. This could be friends from high school, friends you make after high school, or both.

My advice in life would always create your own path. Don’t worry about what everyone else thinks - just always be true to yourself.

See the world when you are young. Adventures are hard to create if you rush towards adulting too quickly. Go somewhere you’ve never been and do things that are out of your comfort zone. Don’t abide by the standards or ideology you are told of how life should appear. Callus your mind to avoid your ceiling. Understand that true happiness lies within yourself and the only way to find it is to discover it.

to this mrs. warden

I guess my advice for seniors would be as follows: “Don’t let unfortunate situations outside of your control define you; instead, recognize them as opportunities to make a difference. Be courageous. Don’t forget that you were created on purpose and for a great purpose. Call your family from time to time just to say “hello”. Never forget that humility and integrity are priceless.”

mrs. metzler Embrace lifelong learning. Step beyond your comfort zone. Take responsibility for your actions. Thank those who help you along the way!

mrs. wilson My advice is be good people in all areas of your life and always be on time.

mr. munce Spend more of your energy and education dollars trying to figure out how the world ACTUALLY works, and less on figuring out how you WISH it worked. Only then, will you gain the expertise you need to affect change in the world. Young people are easily tempted to do this backwards. This is like trying to find a destination without a map. You’ve got to have an accurate idea of where you’ve started if you are going to be effective in getting to a new place.” - Me

ms. mckee Choose a career for yourself that you will really enjoy rather than just one where you can make the most money. Anybody can make money, but if you hate your job every day, it will eat you up inside and damage your health, your relationships, etc. Choose a career which is meaningful to you. Work hard. There is more to life than just playing on your phones and your video games. Challenge yourself. Don’t settle for less just because that road is easier. Always learn. Always grow. Contribute to society. Help others. Contribute to charities. Do volunteer work. Make a difference in your community. Laugh often. Learn to laugh even at your own mistakes. Don’t get down on yourself for a mistake that is easily corrected. If you go through life always embarrassed and always self-critical, your life will not be full of joy. Learn to appreciate all the positve things you are able to do and the skills you have. Don’t take yourself for granted. Remember that you are irreplaceable-there aren’t any other spare yous just hanging around somewhere. Get your earbuds out of your ears and listen--really listen--to those around you, to Nature, to all the sounds that life has to offer.Be a kind human being. Respect others. Say please and thank you. Address people with respect. It costs you nothing and gains you everything.

Memories We Got Spirit: Being on Loud Crowd helped senior Kayleigh Bellamy realize just how important school spirit is to a game. “When we were all dressed up in our theme clothes and cheering, the whole gym or field had a different vibe,” Bellamy said.

Chitty Chitty: Senior Avery Beavers takes the stage as Truly. Avery shows her love for the show when she performs as Truly. “I am feeling whatever Truly is feeling. If Truly is sad then I am portraying that emotion and crying. It’s almost impossible to have personal feelings on stage when you are fully invested in a character.” Beavers said.

Optimistic Outlook: In the Teachers vs. Students basketball game, senior Jackson Fry kept his head in the game. “We were losing most of the game, so I was trying not to waste possessions on the offense and playing solid defense,” Fry said.

Last Song: In the Talent Show, senior Raegan Crowning Royalty: Senior Eghosa Ogbevoen won

Homecoming Queen. “It was like a bunch weight off my shoulders because I wanted it so badly and now it was finally mine,” Ogbevoen said.

Maintz performed To Make You Feel My Love by Adele. “I was definitely feeling bittersweet going into my last talent show because it has always been one of my favorite things to perform in,” Maintz said.

he coronavirus has affected people in many ways. People have stopped working, can not shop at their favorite store, or go out and dine in their favorite restaurant. However, even though the virus as a lot of negative effects there are also some positives that

come out of the stayhome order.   The stay-at-home order has lead to positive changes in the earth’s atmosphere. When driving a car, carbon and nitrogen are emitted for every centimeter driven. More than 4.6 tons of gas is emitted by just one car. As people stay home, the use of

cars has been reduced. This helps produces fewer chemicals for the atmosphere causing less air pollution.   COVID-19 has also produced a lot of awareness, from every culture and city, even celebrities are talking about washing their hands. Online, people have been promoting washing hands, helping

others to understand how important it really is. The crisis has also shown people how to reduce contact and be cautious in public places, which most people did not really understand.   The stay-at-home order has another positive. As families shelter in place, they get to spend more time together, developing better relationships.

From playing games to movie nights and tik toks, families have been given time to spend with each other. Even though the pandemic has been very scary, and has negatively impacted most people’s lives, there are a lot of positive outcomes to better the planet, and hopefully, it brings awareness.

Earth’s Healing The pandemic has lead to drastic environmental changes, but how long will they last?

I

n the wake of this global pandemic, there are things happening outside of the virus. The Earth is healing. With the dwindling amount of transportation in the last few weeks the Earth has had time to heal when it comes to air pollution. Not only has the air pollution gone down, but many things are starting to look up for our planet. Animals are reclaiming land, the Venice Canals have cleared up, people are getting closer with nature, and charities are continuing to fight for our people and planet. Even with lower pollution levels and clearer canals, this is not a sustainable way to heal our planet. Yes, the Earth is better off than it was a month ago, but for how long? How long will it take for pollution levels to rise again and the Earth’s animals to go back into hiding? In order for the planet to survive humans need to work together and continue healing this planet after this treacherous virus ends.

feature 4

Here are some ways humans can push forward helping the planet after the virus.

Walk or Ride Bikes: Riding bikes or walking instead of taking long car rides could benefit the earth because they are forms of pollutionfree transportation.

Recycling: Recycling helps pollution caused by waste. Harmful chemicals are released from trash in landfills. Recycling limits waste in landfills.

Conserving Water: Conserving our resources is important because it keeps water pure while protecting the environment. Turning off the water as you brush your teeth is a great and easy way to conserve water.

Buying Second Hand: Buying from local thrift stores or off of someone can help save on packaging material for half the price.

Shopping Smart: Shopping in a way that uses less plastic and buying a reusable shopping bag is a good way to stay green on a budget.

Turning Off Lights: Turning off lights when you are not in the room. Not using them can conserve energy and reduce costs.

Volunteering: Volunteering in the community or for cleanups around town can help make the community a cleaner place.

What challenges face foreign language teachers during the quarantine

T

eaching a new language is difficult as it is. Imagine how difficult it becomes when it is forced to be taught online. This is the struggle that Foreign language teachers must deal with.   “I have students record themselves in Flipgrid or with the Schoology recording option. That way, there is still some output in the language. It may not seem like a lot of speaking, but students have to think about how to say it in German,” German teacher Anja Canow said.   To emphasize the speaking aspect of a language foreign language teachers are having their students record themselves answering questions instead of typing everything.   “I am trying to offer the students a variety of activities that cover all language skills (speaking, listening, reading, and

writing). While virtual learning cannot replace a language teacher and recreate 50 minutes of daily instructions, I can still give the students opportunities to practice, listen, and learn with online activities until they are back in the classroom where they can see my facial expressions, see my language supporting gestures, and can listen

to my cultural input aside from class content,” Canow said.   Variety is key for students learning virtually so that they don’t get burned out and with a foreign language there are multiple parts that need to be practiced.   “I use a German news channel created for teenagers and ask questions about what they have heard. There

are also interesting podcasts. My lower levels do revisions to practice content knowledge,” Canow said.   Foreign language news channels can be a great way for students to hear the language and retain their abilities.   “Throughout these past weeks, most students are working and continue learning the language. They are trying to stay engaged. This situation has been a big challenge for all of us. One big advantage of teaching all five levels is that I will keep my students next year,” Canow said.  The quarantine is

undoubtedly going to have a negative impact on student learning but foreign language teachers have the benefit of keeping the same students and that allows them to meet the students at their level.   “A good way to maintain the language during the quarantine is to listen to German music and podcasts. I created a Schoology folder with extra material that the students can engage with. Also, join Google Meet where we play Quizlet Live and use our language skills,” said. Doing activities that focus on different areas of a language such as listening, speaking and writing is a great way to keep all the different skills sharp.   Online learning is a process for everyone involved and foreign language teachers are no exception as they have had to adapt their teaching style some of the most but they continue to teach through a variety of different resources.

Here is how athletes can stay prepared for next season.

Dreaming Quarantine is causing some weird dreams… but what do they mean?

H

ow does a global population respond to an invisible, fatal virus? They quarantine, distance themselves, stock up on necessities, close the world, and oddly enough; they dream.   Dreams are the result of the subconscious processing of information while asleep. Often, this can be information that people are not keen on handling in conscious daylight hours, particularly intense and negative emotions. This allows a lot of the stresses in life to take a major toll on dreams.   The Coronavirus pandemic, in

h&f

6

particular, has had a huge negative influence on people’s lives across the globe. This may

be causing some very intense and negative emotions for a lot of people, therefore inducing more intense and vivid dreams.   A combination of prolonged isolation and

intense dreams may also result in people remembering their dreams more often.

While these dreams may seem frightening or odd, it is important to remember that the brain and body are just trying their best to keep up with the situation.   Weeks of home

lockdown, hearing stories of the virus, and feeling cut off from seeing or experiencing

it or anything else? It is scary. It has been scary for a while, and it will be for a little while longer. Dreams may begin to reflect that fear, whether they provide

ease or not. Hopefully, this subconscious processing of that fear, however, could also make it easier to find the simple quarantined pleasures of the day, like learning a new recipe or finding a great new tv show.   The pandemic, and the quarantine it’s yielded, will not last forever; and neither will these dreams. However, there is comfort and power in knowledge, so understanding where these dreams are coming from could possibly provide that. There is also comfort in the fact that no one is going through this fight alone; not even when they are dreaming.

T

his is a time of change. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected almost every aspect of life and one of the most severely affected areas is sports. Almost all sporting events around the world have been canceled or postponed including those at Lee’s Summit High School.     Without their regular conditioning athletes need to find new ways to train on their own for whenever things return to normal.   “I think athletes need to continue to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Sports will eventually be back.”  Girls distance coach

Kit Anderson said.   When sports will come back is still unclear. The Missouri State High School Activities Association commonly known as MSHSAA has canceled all events for the rest of the school year bringing

spring sports to an early end. MSHSAA has temporarily suspended some of its rules to allow schools to hold athletics events during the summer. They have also allowed seniors who graduate this year to be eligible to compete in

these events. This could allow schools to hold a summer season if the current medical crisis allows for it. Some are worried that there may not even be a fall season of sports next year due to the pandemic.

Even if there is a season there may be disruptions if the virus has an unexpected second wave.   “I think the best way for athletes to stay in shape is by continuing to work out, specifically by running and lifting weights.” Baseball coach Kevin Pettit said.   Specific workouts depend on what sport the athlete is involved in but many coaches advise similar workouts. If weights are not available then they can use objects around their houses or do bodyweight workouts like pushups. Athletes should also try

Written by: Ethan Flemming D e s i g n e d b y : Fa i t h R o a c h

to practice any of the skills necessary for their sport as best as they can. Athletes have other problems to consider as well.   “Athletes can protect themselves by starting smart. They should all practice social distancing.” Anderson said.   It is important for athletes to be careful as they try to keep in shape to keep themselves and others around them safe. The CDC has posted advice on how to prevent getting sick and cope with the current crisis which several coaches recommended following. These guidelines include staying six feet away from others, washing hands often, and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces.

Predicting the Future:

The once apparently outrageous thought of a raging global pandemic is now a reality.

n 2005, Peter May wrote a novel that was eerily titled Lockdown. Though being on lockdown is a familiar concept to

reality, with hundreds of thousands of people infected all around the world. Though the book was deemed far-fetch by publishers, May actually incorporated information from Britain’s pandemic

procedures, as the book is set in London.  Though May’s book was written with the bird flu in mind, as that is what scientists predicted to be the next major pandemic, it is still hard to deny the similarities between the current world and May’s fictional one. Now, Lockdown is finally being published as this once deemed impossible situation is unfolding

Though this virus is not the novel’s main focus, it is hard to deny that prediction was a bit eerie.   A self-described

There have been many changes due to coronavirus. The gym is closed and now many people don’t have a specific place that they can go to exercise, but no worries. There are still

some workouts that students can do at home. Before doing any of the following exercises make sure to get a good stretch in order to avoid cramps. You should also be drinking water before, during, and after workouts so that your

body can stay hydrated and give you more energy during workouts. Make sure that you are also taking breaks during after workouts so that your muscles get a break. This is important because it will allow your muscles to get a

Then place your forearm on the floor pushing your body up. This exercise will make your core hurt a little but it will all be worth it. Do this for about 1 min and 30 seconds. If you are unable to hold the pose for this long, you can always try again and make it your goal.

Put your hands right below your shoulders and knees under your hips. Then bring your left hand upwards and your right leg up. Make sure that that they are fully extended. Bring them down, and repeat with the opposite hand and leg.

reading. While reading is a typical thing to do, there is another option now due to the quarantine. Because of what is going on, an internet archive called the ‘National Emergency Library’ has opened. It gives anyone access to something over a million books to read for free. While it has been used before, there are no waiting lists anymore so people can read what they want when they want. Another form of media that has come into prominence during the pandemic are live performances. From singers to actors to orchestras, a large variety of performances are available to watch via live streams. From streaming past events to performing through video chat, performers are actively presenting fun content to watch.
