Dr. Martha Udom Emmanuel

Wife of Governor, Akeya Iborn State

Her Excellency, Dr. (Mrs.) Martha Udom Emmanuel is the wife of the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency, Mr. Udom Emmanuel. Through her compassionate demeanour, God fearing heart and innate belief in the wellbeing of humanity, she has used her office to advance the course of the less privileged and vulnerable people in our society.

Over the years, she has brought a sunny disposition to the indigent and the forlorn, give hope to the hopeless, succour to the destitute there by giving them assurance that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Through the instrumentality of her Non-Governmental Organization: Family Empowerment and Youth Re-orientation Path Initiative (FEYReP), she has clearly amplified the profoundly inspiring proclamation of the one-time British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher that “if you want something said, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman.” Her Excellency, Dr (Mrs) Martha Udom Emmanuel is a living testimony of that Thatcherian invocation.

Through FEYReP, she has ignited in our youth a new sense of faith predicated on the Dakkada philosophy which challenges citizens to tap into their inherent gifts and talents and use them to rise to the faith of greatness. She has also accentuated family values based on sound moral conducts for a better society.

FEYReP is founded on five Pillars in line with the Sustainable Development goals:

1. To showcase successful families.

2. To empower women to provide economic and emotional support to their families.

3. To advocate for the prevention of teenage pregnancy and education of the girl-child

4. To promote moral values and economic excellence in our youth.

5. To support government effort towards sustainable Development.

These pillars are carefully tailored as follows;

GIRLS UPHOLD YOUR DIGNITY COMPAIGN:

Being fully aware of the debilitating menace of early childhood pregnancy and the negative effects such could have on the overall development of the girl child, FEYReP implemented the Girls uphold your dignity campaign which took enlightenment messages on HIV and AIDS, VVF, teenage pregnancy, rape and the rights of the girl child to secondary schools across the state.

This advocacy Programme is aimed at raising the bar on the standard of behavior and educational focus of the girl child. It seeks to reposition the girl child educational, promote behavioral change and educate on reproductive health. Meanwhile, the program is yielding positive results. She has taken up this issue with messianic zeal, winning plaudits and accolades across the National and International space.

Bright Future for Responsible Boys:

Taking cognizance of the societal pressure the boy-child is equally faced with, Dr. Martha Emmanuel has also inaugurated a Boy-child campaign in the state tagged “Bright Future for Responsible Boys.” This is a platform where primary and secondary school boys are mentored against indulging in vices such as cultism, rape, premarital relationship and drug abuse. According to her, “we cannot be raising the girl-child to uphold her dignity while the boy-child is left unattended to, it would imply that our work is incomplete.”

FOLLOW THE STAR:

Denzel Washington, an American actor ones said, “show me a successful individual and I’ll show you someone who has had real positive influence in their lives”, Therefore FEYReP created a mentoring program “Follow the Star” which offers steady support, hope, wise counseling and guidance, to our young ones to develop their academic and professional skills as well as uncover their talent potentials to help them succeed in their future endeavors. So far the idea has yielded positive results as about 6000 students have been reached and mentored.

Dr. Martha Udom Emmanuel Wife of Governor, Akeya Iborn State

FIGHT AGAINST GENDER BASED VIOLENCE:

During the pandemic, the world experienced a hick in gender based violence especially rape, and our dear state was included but, FEYReP with other NGOs rose against it and in its entirety condemned the crime by staging a state wide awareness campaigns in condemnation of the act, provision of the necessary logistical resources to prosecute perpetrators and provision of succor to the victims in their GBV centers across the State. As a way of reaching out, the chairperson and members of the State GBV committee held town hall meetings with stakeholders across the ten Federal Constituencies to specifically draw their attention to the roles they are to play whenever there is a case of GBV in their community. As the Chairperson of the GBV Committee in the State, she and her team have built a State GBV Rehabilitation Centre in Uyo, and established Sexual Assault Referral Centre across the three Senatorial Districts with free medical care.

SHELTER OF HOPE PROJECT:

Through FEYReP within the period under review, Dr. Emmanuel has successfully built, furnished and delivered 63 two and three units bedroom bungalows to the poor and indigent citizens of Akwa Ibom which is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and still counting.

MARKET REMODELING:

With the drive to give the women folk a better business environment to trade and encourage self-reliance, FEYReP has a project tagged ‘Market Remodeling’ were several markets are remodeled with open, lock up stalls, and slaughter within the three senatorial districts of the state.

MEDICAL AND HEALTH INTERVENTIONS:

Being fully aware that health is wealth and a healthy citizenry makes a productive workforce. FEYReP has made significant progress in contributing to the reduction of several leading causes of death and diseases within Akwa Ibom population by undertaking a several medical intervention program for indigent members of our communities. These interventions include:

MARTHA PREGNACARE PROGRAMME:

An outreach Programme which is geared towards reducing infant morbidity infant morbidity and maternal mortality in the state where over 7000 expectant mothers across the 31 Local Government Areas have received free Medicare, cash, as well as delivery kits. This exercise has been conducted in 10 phases.

DEWORMING EXERCISE:

FEYReP partnered with Niemeth International Pharmaceuticals Plc., and Vitamin Angels to implement a de-worming exercise in the state through a school health care programme. This exercise has touched the lives of over 48,000 children in the State. It was carried out in six phases across the three Senatorial Districts.

FREE SURGICAL CARE: Noteworthy is the free surgical care recently organized by FEYReP in collaboration with Pro-Health International and Akwa Ibom State Association of Nigeria (AKISAN, USA incorporated), where over 10,000 people benefitted across the three senatorial district of the state. This initiative was borne out of Government’s desire to meet the health needs of her people, and as well build a healthy and energetic population which remains the hallmark of this administration.

EYE RESTORATION SCHEME: FEYReP in partnership with MTN Foundation Eyesight Restoration Intervention Scheme (MTNF EyeRIS) conducted eye care outreach benefitting at least 6,000 persons. The scheme conducted 2,000 cataract surgeries, distributed 2,000 pairs of glasses and 2,000 drug packs to people with various eye defects for free.

Dr. Emmanuel has built a Primary Health Centre at Obio Akpa, Oruk Anam local Government area to promote primary health care and easy access to medical care.

She has donated equipment and consumables to the Primary and Secondary health centers across the State.

OTHER HEALTH INTERVENTIONS include; performance of surgeries on two people with brain tumor, three people with Goiter and on babies born without anus and genitals, among others.

EDUCATIONAL INTERVENTIONS:

FEYReP understands the role of education in the development of the society and would not relent in creating enabling environments for the children to be educated. These interventions include:

THE BACK TO SCHOOL PROGRAMME:

This program is focused on re-kitting school children with personal effects and stationery to better prepare them for the school year. This programme has been carried out in 8 phases.

PRESENTATION OF GRANTS AND SCHOLARSHIPS TO STUDENTS IN THE TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS:

FEYReP has also given over 900 scholarships to undergraduates and an additional student’s support / grants to over 426 students at the secondary and tertiary levels and still counting

FEYReP has built a refectory and kitchen at the Special Education center for children with a population of over 100 as part of FEYReP’s effort to support and encourage a conducive environment for learning.

ENTREPRENEURIAL SUPPORT AND WOMEN EMPOWERMENT:

FEYReP ensured over the years that women have access to sustainable incomes to aid their families. Therefore, boosting the income of women becomes a necessity for gender equality. This initiative is made up of:

FEYReP MULTIPURPOSE INTEREST FREE LOAN:An initiative provided quarterly to ensure that women receive interest free loans in the state to cater for their businesses. This has been done in many phases.

THE ‘GET A SKILL INITIATIVE’: A good number of female youths have benefited in capacity building, trained as fashion designers, barbers, hair dressers, shoe menders, mechanics and aluminum fabricators and empowered with tools. This program is ongoing in the state and has yielded tremendous results.

Rural women across the three Senatorial districts have also benefitted from the largesse of FEYReP with cash grant to be economically self-reliant and productive.

EMPOWERING RURAL WOMEN THROUGH AGRO PROCESSING:

Women play significant roles in economic development. In Akwa Ibom State, over 60% of food produced is executed by women either by farming or food processing.

Our state is rich in cassava, rice, seafood, oil palm etc. However the tedious and time consuming procedures involved in food processing greatly hampers economic development of rural farmers and leads to post harvest loses.

Through FEYReP, Dr. Emmanuel has built fish kilns, cassava processing factories and palm oil processing factories as its modest contributions towards eliminating post-harvest loses and improves economic fortunes of the women farmers.

Dr. Martha Udom Emmanuel Wife of Governor, Akeya Iborn State

The Africa Missions ‘Water for Life’ project aims at providing potable water for remote target locations in Africa. The objective is to alleviate the suffering of some people in the rural areas, including incidences of water-borne diseases by supplying water through boreholes.

The borehole project has successfully provided clean and potable water for over thirty (30) communities across Africa for domestic and farm use. In response to the crisis posed by insurgency, terrorism as well as epidemics, Africa Missions Global has provided urgently needed relief materials and shelter to help individuals and communities cope with the unfortunate consequences of these incidents. Worthy of note is the distribution of essential drugs and relief materials such as assorted food items and Ebola Protection kits among others during the 2010 Ebola crisis in the three (3) worst-hit nations of Africa, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea Conakry.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Africa Missions Global sponsored the provision of palliatives to target communities in Africa through her various chapters.

Following the insurgency in North-East Nigeria, the Internally Displaced Persons in Maiduguri, Abuja, and Yola, Nigeria were provided with relief materials. AMG went a step further to provide an all-encompassing IDP Camp in Maiduguri, one of the worst hit areas, with the unique strategy of educating the children through the setup of a primary school for the community, a vocational Centre to empower the people and an entrepreneurial hub to support them in trading with their skills to enable them plan for life beyond the camp. The children also get a free meal in school. The school which was initially a primary school, now has a secondary arm to cater for the older and graduating children coming through from the primary school.

Shelter and Orphanage

Improving the state of shelters for victims of insurgency, terrorism and disasters/epidemic outbreak is an important aspect of post-disaster response. Many shelter seekers had to take refuge far off from their homes because alternative shelters were not available nearby. AMG provided equipped emergency shelters to give succor to a large number of the Internally Displaced Persons in Northern Nigeria who lost their homes to insurgencies or terrorism and to children who became orphans as a result of such incidence. These shelters serve as temporary safe spaces where they can stabilize, until they are able to return home.

Habitation of Hope – An Integrated Shelter For Vulnerable Boys

Pastor Mrs. Folu Adeboye is the founder of the Habitation of Hope initiative, an integrated initiative targeted at the rehabilitation of homeless and vulnerable boys taken off the streets and drug dens. She founded the initiative in 2006 to rescue depressed and destitute boys from the streets, transform and empower them, and give them the opportunity to develop into responsible citizens.

The Habitation of Hope initiative targets to reconcile these Street Children back to Christ, improve the quality of life of the lost boys/ Street boys Nationwide, promote the care, wellbeing and development of street boys Nationwide, provide accommodation, healthcare and education for the young boys between the ages of 7-18 years in need, especially the deprived, destitute and the homeless who have been taken off the streets and provide holistic support including tuition, housing, healthcare, counselling and a range of vocational training such as shoe making, carpentry, painting, decoration, block making, sewing etc to build self confidence in the boys for those who do not pursue higher education.

The vision is to totally remove street children from the nation of Nigeria by reconciling these children back to their families and helping them to settle down into their homes. It is an initiative set-up to give hope to the hopeless.

The Habitation of Hope facilities provide shelter for the boys, feeding, education to tertiary level (university level) for those who have the aptitude and a vocational training route for those who are more entrepreneurial to ensure that each boy leaves the home empowered. Many of them today are graduates and entrepreneurs and have settled into life. Those who have graduated from the vocational route today make shoes, bags, and other profitable ventures. The initiative started in a small bungalow with about 30 boys in 2006. To date hundreds of boys have successfully passed through their facilities and are doing well in their various endeavours in life.

Wholistic Ministries – An Integrated Shelter For Vulnerable Girls and Women

The Wholistic Outreach, a faith based non-profit initiative was founded in April 2002 by Pastor Mrs Foluke Adeboye, to offer social services and promote youth and women development particularly to vulnerable women. The vision is traceable to the moral decadence in society, reflecting in the hordes of commercial sex workers, increase in numbers of pregnant and stranded teenagers, neglected young girls and ladies in various stages of destitution who are all suffering from the effect of this decadence. The Organization is currently active and effective in the work of social reformation to give these girls and women the hope of a better life.

The Wholistic Outreach provides housing, education and vocational training to victims of sex trafficking, vulnerable girls at-risk to ensure that they are not only rescued from their unfortunate circumstances, but that they are also psychologically and financially empowered to fend for themselves.

The Wholistic Outreach also creates awareness on the ills of sexual misconduct among youths and offers training to equip those who work with young people particularly in states vulnerable to child labor and child trafficking on the ills of such practices. The training also involves counselling of young women to effectively handle their personal, social, and financial circumstances as well as to reduce anxiety and emotional disturbances caused by the stress of being homeless. An aspect of the Help Program is to enable them develop self-esteem, self-reliance, and self-confidence to prepare them for life after the home and to possible stigmatisation depending on their personal circumstances.

Friends of Jesus, an initiative targeted at those who are less privileged and destitute in the immediate community of the Redemption camp, Ogun State, Nigeria. It is focused on meeting their basic needs of food, shelter and resettlement as the case may be.

CADAM (Christ Against Drug Abuse Ministries)

CADAM was founded in 1991 by Pastor Ezekiel A. Odeyemi, a Pastor in the Redeemed Christian Church of God to cater for the treatment and rehabilitation of drug addicts, both male and female. The initiative provides a one year residential rehabilitation program and started in rented premises only for the men in Poka, Epe, Lagos State, Nigeria. In 2003, a facility was rented to cater for the women.

Due to the overwhelming challenges posed by drugs in our society, Pastor Mrs. Adeboye extended her charitable reach to CADAM and sponsored the building of the Enoch and Folu Adeboye Rehabilitation Centre in Epe, Lagos State, Nigeria, a facility which has made it possible for the program to accommodate about 100 people each session, providing full boarding and feeding for those being rehabilitated, at no cost.

The Health Village – An Inspirational and Evolving Health Initiative

In response to the health care challenges in the country, she has pioneered an inspirational project to build a Health Village in the environs of the Redemption Camp, in Ogun State, Nigeria, a project which when actualised, will be one of the most unique integrated health initiatives in the continent providing a wide range of quality and affordable health care to anyone requiring such.

Following her pursuit of ensuring that specialist health care is available in Nigeria, she is a major co-sponsor with her husband, Pastor E. A. Adeboye, of the many Dialysis and Intensive Care Units donated to several university teaching hospitals across Nigeria through the ‘His Love Foundation’.

A woman of great compassion, endowed with immense love for humanity, she demonstrates her passion for vulnerable people not only through the initiatives she has pioneered, but also through the support of other initiatives focused on addressing the plight of vulnerable people. Widows and the Elderly are not left out in her charitable causes as she has several other initiatives to support widows in areas where the traditions are hostile to them as well as the elderly in different communities.

Lauretta Joyce Mashego Woman of Distinction Award

Lauretta Mashego grew up as the eldest child of her parents, with four younger siblings. She was one of the numerous grandchildren of her grandparents, which taught her how to share resources at a tender age. She grew up in a small neighborhood with her extended family and those in her community. This exposed her to the concept of family beyond a household and making the most of what you have

Also because of this, she never really knew what it meant to be a kid since she had to take up some of the parental duties at an early age As the eldest sister, she developed a strong sense of nurturing and protecting the younger siblings, which was a distinguishing factor in her relationships with other children.

Growing up, Lauretta felt accustomed to the company of adults. She was always more mature than the other children surrounding her even at school This started showing up through the leadership positions that she assumed at school and in social gatherings at a tender age Even when she gained friends, she often associated with various personalities including those that were perceived by others to be the most difficult people to befriend as she was perceived as the natural leader Lauretta graduated at the top of her Grade 12 class. She then proceeded to tertiary institutions to pursue a medical career which she later converted to follow a teaching qualification. Lauretta confesses that her lack of self-awareness earlier in life cost her years of pursuing a career without selffulfillment and alignment with her purpose.

Lauretta started her working career as a teacher at a high school back in her neighborhood The relationships that she had established back at university culminated with her meeting a young man who was keen on developing a close relationship with her This relationship blossomed into Lauretta and Harry tying the knot in 1989 A few years later the couple welcomed their first child, a daughter then a son was added. Lauretta was happy with her dual role of mom and career woman where she felt like raising her children is a fulfilling calling.

In her mid-thirties, Lauretta discovered that she had a passion for being an entrepreneur. She then left her teaching career to be trained as a chef to start up a catering business, which she did Part of the motivation for starting the catering business was to empower women with skills to address the high unemployment levels amongst women The catering business unfolded other passions that were innate in Lauretta, like interacting with people and personal coaching She then started to discover various ways of empowering women through skills development including beadwork, cooking, and

Lauretta Joyce Mashego Woman of Distinction Award

baking She subsequently got associated with the ENACTUS organization, which develops entrepreneurs within institutions of higher learning to empower disadvantaged communities

Lauretta has recently established an accredited training center, which specializes in cooking and baking. This institute further drives her commitment to empowering women to economic freedom and imparting critical life skills. Following her journey of self-discovery, she was propelled to help more individuals find their purpose and follow their calling. Self-discovery, mentoring, and career guidance are also key offerings of the training center

She does this selflessly and with a heart full of gratitude Her passion to see others rise is what continues to inspire those around her to reach their full potential. She will leave you energized and believing that anything is possible. Her legacy is already cemented in her lifetime, and will continue to live through the lives she continues to impact and change.
