Lighting Narrative : Overview Madinat al Soor is a unique urban development which, while informed by the traditional vernacular of Arabic habitats, is novel in the modern context. It excludes the customary use of axis, grids, and other Euclidean tools of contemporary planning. Rather, the massing and spatial character has an emergent quality that suggests an origin from the organic growth of a prior settlement. The spatial experience is articulated by the aggregation of disparate volumes allowing for accidents, surprises and anomalities. The intricate knitting together of the monumental scale and the human scale along with the conflux of varied activities results in a myriad interesting juxtapositions. The Lighting Character is intended to be instructed by this very unpremeditated and improvised affect of the plan. It is proposed that a limited set of luminaire typologies be used in an assortment of configurations to create particular and distinguishing conditions and experiences. Lighting of a type that is vital, exuberant and stimulating is interspersed within moments of serenity and tranquil - to create an overall vibrant environment.

Streetscape - Cobblestone Way The Cobblestone Way is set amidst high-end luxury villas in close proximity to the sea. The lighting in this exclusive residential realm is intended to be warm, subdued and romantic. The placement of the luminaires is somewhat irregular, in a manner that is consistent with the massing character of the neighbourhood. The rectilinear shapes of the luminaires are of a vocabulary that conforms to the jagged angular volumetric nature of the built landscape.
