COLLAGE CITY DIS, 2015

Collage City was to transform the abandoned lake front in one of the five finger lakes in Copenhagen, Denmark into an active, slower traffic, more pedestrian friendly urban area. Implemented programs include a bridge, bus stop in the center, farmers market, cascading seating, and floating stage.

This project was exhibited at Danish Institute of Studyabroad in July 2015.

CASA-VERDE

NSA+D, 2013

The brief for “Casa Verde” was to transform the abandoned shopping center in the suburb of San Diego into a community with infrastructure such as public transport, housing, retail and public plaza. Each student was given a lot for the proposal to construct a multi-unit housing and decide on a strategy of transformation.

This project was exhibited at Newschool of Architecture and Design in March 2013.

SOUND OF WOOD

NSA+D

This project was a part of environmental systems class where students were given a choice to select one type of material and create a system. With wood, a combination of acoustical diffusor and an insulation unit system of 4’ x4’ was created.

This project was exhibited at Newschool of Architecture and Design in November 2012.

COMPETITION 2014 CLOUDS

PAVILION

COLLABORATION WITH: Janamae Abiaro

The brief for Clouds Pavilion_Uninvited pavilion in Venice Biennale, Summer 2014 aimed to collage together history of revolution in America in regards to keystones of capitalism; metaphysically, epistemology, ethically, and politically.

This project was submitted to Venice Biennale July 2014.

“IT IS . . . BY REFERENCE TO PHILOSOPHY THAT THE CHARACTER OF A SOCIAL SYSTEM HAS TO BE DEFINED AND EVALUATED. CORRESPONDING TO THE FOUR BRANCHES OF PHILOSOPHY, THE FOUR KEYSTONES OF CAPITALISM ARE: METAPHYSICALLY, THE REQUIREMENTS OF MAN’S NATURE AND SURVIVAL—EPISTEMOLOGICALLY, REASON— ETHICALLY, INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS, POLITICALLY, FREEDOM.”

AYN RAND

COMPETITION 2014 PARASITISM

Parasitism is a multi-unit housing that zooms in on one of the units. Client was Hazel D. who is a graphic designer. After the interview, a program diagram was created and spaces were considered. A grasshopper scripting was introduced in design for the first time.

This project was presented in Summer 2012.

COMPETITION 2013

SIXTYNINESEVENTY

SixtynineSeventy is an urban ideas competition in SaltLakeCity, Utah. Using the existing grid of urban blocks sixty nine and seventy, re-activation proposal was submitted to the competition.

This project was submitted in Spring 2013.

COMPETITION 2013 STORMPROOF

MENTOR: Yousef Al-Rashed

Stormproof is a disaster relief competition project that is a reaction to hurricane Sandy. As a case study, Notomas region of Sacramento was taken into consideration. In Sacramento, houses are situated below the levee, making them vulnerable in situations of flood.

This project was submitted in Summer 2013.

Problem statement: to alleviate the cataclysmic impact of flooding on river communities through basic physical and organizational structures necessary for a society to operate before, during, and after a flood.

Urban Fabric

South Natomas, a poor neighborhood of Sacramento, Calif., is on the verge of a devastating levee break that will forever change its relationship with the America and the Sacramento rivers. The levee break could potentially destroy many lives and the fragile local economy; therefore, it offers unique opportunities for experimenting with adaptable neighborhoods

Design Solution

The project Buoyant Urbanism explores a shift in emphasis on risk management and living with floods, rather than taking defensive actions against flood hazards. It proposes a transformative infrastructure that is woven into the existing urban fabric and adapts to all phases (impact, rescue, and recovery) of a flood.

Situation 1

Houses are situated below the levee while submergence rate is 2’ of water per hour.

Situation 2

After 4+ hours of rain, residents are stranded.

Step 1

Water is collected in pylons.

Step 2

Water filled up in pylons start to push the house upward.

Step 3

When flooding stops, house is risen as high as the water level.

Step 4

Houses are left undamaged but people are stranded.

SEMESTER 2 FALL, 2011 BOX PROJECT II

MENTORS: Victor Sidy + Frank Henry

Second Box project presented at Taliesin, Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture, was a Community Activity Center / Flex Space. Materials that were used to assemble this structure were: shipping pallets, insulation, and smart LED wall units, C-channels, L-channels, hollow steel tubes for structure. It was a simple pre-fab unit system that assembled on site and disassembled for storage after use. It was a cost-efficient project rented out to the public from the city for a duration of a month to a year at a time.

This project was presented in Fall Semester, 2011.

GARDEN HOTEL

COLLABORATION WITH: Kevin Diaz

Garden Hotel was designed in Office Practice class in collaboration with Kevin Diaz. The project is located in Yantalo, Peru, a high Andean mountains. It is located close to the equator, in high humidity, and in the most remote region. The project concerned with creating a natural and seemless, unassuming characteristic that blends into the site creating a healing space/garden for the families of the sick visiting the hospital/clinic near by.

This project was presented Summer, 2013.

COMPETITION 2012 SMART HARBOR

COLLABORATION WITH: Nancy Tariga

Smart Harbor, Pesaro, Italy was an ideas competition to rejuvenate / activate existing industrial port. Once the shipping industry was outsourced, port of Pesaro was no longer in use. This competition sought ways to provide the locals with entertainment, walking experience and attraction to the harbor area.

This project was submitted Spring, 2012.
