Krannert Art and Performance Center: Massing forms introduce most horizontality and some verticality; grand view to all directions; material of concrete, masonry, and glazing.
Molecular and Cellular Biology Building: Language of verticality and the use of continuous glazing combined with single vertical window openings. 03
Commercial 1-story building: Restaurants and bars serving nearby academic buildings; the language of horizontality with the storefront.
-MASSING CONNECTION-
-CONCEPTUAL LANGUAGE CONNECTION-
Connecting tall modern academic building group to the short classical building group, the spinning wing from circular pivot gives guidance to change.
Transforms and fuses language of verticality and horizontality, and turning massing forms
04
Design Development: Inspired by Tadao Ando and particularly his Azuma House in Sumiyoshi and museums, Japan. The design takes on concrete minimal appearance and space defined by simple geometric forms of walls. -> main body interconnected to side wing with circular pivotal form, creating unique exterior circulation ->a fusion of outdoor and indoor space ->a rhythm of massing corresponds the Krannert Center acroos the intersection ->a rhythm of glazing corresponds to MCB building next to it

Three side glazing library features a two-story triangular corner that lights up the entire library space and facilitated air circulation, and skylight opening lining up with twisting wing direction.
The interactive relationship between spaces is well represented. People walking on outdoor circular stairs and people inside of circular wall spaces including the all overhang mass could have interesting mutual views.
10
The design features an interior surrounded by circulations and curtain wall skin and perforated metal screen wrapping all sides, defining the exterior while creating a light shuttling box. A sense of industrialization in skin and structure emphasizes the library's inner relationship with city train and its important as a site of public transporting and gathering. 11

+ PROGRESS STUDY MODELS +
Design development: Inspired by many famous libraries with special central atrium, and mainly by competition project of Metro Station in Paris by Kengo Kuma. + Floor shifting and twisting give possibilities to interesting surrounding circulation + use taller office building as pivot of twisting, introducing a sense of direction and forms following the turning railway + idea of transform and combine atrium with daylight to create a lightbox + separate office building and library, allowing train going through the structure, semi-transparent skin all contribute to maximizing lightbox effect
17
Summer and winter daylighting as shown have different surfaces for penetration respectively. Inspired by Morphosis, protruding circulation boxes bring extra uniqueness to interior lighting effect. With open ground level plaza, second level railway, and mid-gap, the entire building achieved transparency both visually and physically.

Locating at downtown Champaign near the busy Main Street, this building is dedicated to people in the community, providing them a place to gather and experience while learning bakery. The multifunctional commercial building includes bakery classrooms, children bakery and activity space, cafe and lounge, and gallery. Other two features: A diagonally rectangular form guide people to go through the building; glazing and window units gives a good view for users and an interesting rhythm for the facade. Recessed entrances form a natural canopy and their glazing wall is protected by forms on two sides. Northside has a few interesting window openings so that the majority of masonry prevents the north wind; the south side is much more transparent with a few shading allowing southeast natural lighting.

Daylighting is introduced into mid atrium, transparent levels, and through the glass roof all the way into the corridor. Glazing combined with designed wood panel walls function as diffused, reflective, and permeating lighting transporter. The design meant to create an interactive experience features a normal height floors and mezzanine floors surrounding a narrow-shape and spacious corridor/atrium to give a good view to other people and activities to people in any floor and anywhere in the building. Interior wall pattern follows the sense of pattern in floor plan and elevation, the diagonal cut and twisting.

This installation feature multiple functions yet as most of the time an audience seating place is designed to serve primarily for small group critique holding up to 2 sections of sophomore students with a maximum of 30. Dealing with structure and safety issue, we fixed down some of the boxes onto the stair frame while forming a compartmental cube structure to beat prevent sliding from sitting on lightweight wood boxes and best ensure life safety. With black and white contrasting paint on these boxes, not only more uniqueness and variety are added to the fallacy space but also an informative image is given to people on that uniform white boxes are part of the main structure while standing-out black boxes are to be moved for seating and used for model exhibition and photography. Same contrasting element are also displayed on the back grid of the stair for defining spaces within. From the budgeting standpoint, the design is reduced from full span of 21’-3” over the east wall and column on the west to a 12’-6” comprising of 10 seat in a roll with a total of three rolls, which also contributes to life safety at the same time. For the entire installation, we decided to use Baltic birch because of the inexpensiveness of birch overall, and on the other hand it's suitable stability, flexibility to work with, and the aestheticity for construction of interior furniture. Regarding to the connection issue, we decided to have two major types of joinery for two parts of the structure: the edge-to-edge butt joint with small piece of wood block on the inside is used for boxes construction mitered plate joint is used on the side large frames for the stability of the entire structure. All joints are to be reinforced with flat head screws while sometimes glued on necessary parts for the best result in terms of stability.

The first phase of this design-and-build competition is to create an installation to redefine a gallery space in sophomore’s studio. Responding to the various need of the site, our design features a multi-functional seating structure that can be used for lectures, studio critique and exhibitions in the studio. To maximize the practicability of this structure, we separate it into 2 parts: a permanent stepped seating with grid at the back for storage, and multiple boxes either on or off the stair for seating, display or separating space. The movable boxes largely increase the flexibility of this installation by giving user opportunities to add functions to the gallery themselves. For the three teams chosen for the final list, the second phase of this competition is to design the details of construction within a budget of $1500. On the stepped seating holding up to 2 sections of sophomore students with a maximum of 30 people, we separate the boxes into 2 groups: 11 movable ones are painted black which can be used as photography and exhibition background for models; 13 white ones are fixed to the stair frame, forming a compartmental-cube structure to prevent the sliding of these lightweight wood boxes and increase the safety of the seatings. The contrast of black `and white therefore, will add both practical use and visual vitality to the installation. Dealing with the budget, we limit the span of the stair in 12'-6'', which consists of 10 seat in a roll with a total of three rolls. Baltic birch is used as the material for both boxes and stair frame. MATERIAL MATERIAL

The key feature is to use glass panel with water flow on, in order to create an atmosphere of peace and harmony. Black metal is used to delineate a continuous looped frame. ARBORETUM, URBANA IL
Located at the Arboretum at the University district, it is a design of a conference space for all types of outdoor and indoor events. The design features two unique aspects:
+ The structure is built semi-underground with its roof covered all by grass, hiding the building from the open nice view from the other side of the Japan House. The other side of the building is open to an outdoor resting space. + The roof is curved to fit the typography while having round skylights for the best interior experience.
