WELCOME WELCOMe to the University of Glasgow! Starting university can be a scary experience, but there are a number of places where you will be able to find help and advice for virtually any problem you might experience. The information contained in the Diary is intended to give you an overview of what’s available to you at university, but if you require more information, you’ll be able to find it on the SRC’s website at www.glasgowstudent. net, or in the Guide, which is available in the John McIntyre Building on University Avenue if you don’t already have a copy. In this introduction you will find a brief description of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), who have produced this Diary for you, along with information about the University’s services for students, and the other student bodies. Hopefully this introduction will answer a few of the questions you might have about life on campus, as well as letting you know about a few of the opportunities you’ll be able to take advantage of over the next few years. THE SRC www.glasgowstudent.net www.facebook.com/glasgowuniversitysrc www.twitter.com/gusrc John McIntyre Building University Avenue G12 8QQ 0141 339 8541 enquiries@src.gla.ac.uk Based in the John McIntyre Building, right next to the main gate, the SRC is a unique body on campus. The SRC exists to support you and protect your rights as a student of the University of

Glasgow. This applies to everything else that could bother you while you’re studying, so they can help with anything from health, finance and personal safety to ensuring fair deadlines for work and getting helpful feedback on essays. Membership is automatic for all students, so you don’t even need to worry about joining. Besides representing students’ views and campaigning for their rights, the SRC is committed to making your life at university as hassle-free and enjoyable as possible. They provide a range of invaluable services such as the free halls of residence to campus minibus services, the independent Advice Centre, the cheapest photocopying in the West End, and much more. Finally, the SRC ensures that you have countless opportunities to make the most of your spare time, learn new skills and meet new people by helping to host and support award-winning student media outlets, student volunteering opportunities and clubs and societies. Some of Council’s recent achievements include successfully campaigning for the abolition of the Graduate Endowment; compiling a Student Platform document for Westminster elections candidates; campaigning for Wednesday afternoon to be set aside for extra curricular activities; and collaborating with the University on the development of a fair and clear student maternity/paternity policy. The best way to keep up to date with what’s going on at the SRC is through its website: www.glasgowstudent.net You can also find us online at our Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Scribd websites at the addresses shown above.

REPRESENTATION REPRESENTATION SRC COUNCIL www.glasgowstudent.net/about/council www.glasgowstudent.net/about/elections Council is the main representative body of University of Glasgow students. This is where policy is passed, and issues affecting students are raised to be taken up with the University. It is made up of up to 35 members, including the four sabbatical officers who take a year out in order to concentrate on their work full-time. Other positions include the Officers, who deal with welfare and equal opportunities issues in their particular area of interest, including LGBT students, women, and disabled students; Academic Convenors who deal with academic matters in their college; and General Representatives. Council meets at least 6 times each year. You can find all meeting dates at the web address above. Any student can attend and observe these meetings, and if you want to take part, elections are held in the Autumn for General Rep positions, and Spring for all other posts.

or staff within your school then your Student Rep should be your first port of call. Student Reps allow students to air their views to the academics running their school on issues such as course content, teaching and resources. Becoming a Student Rep for your class/ course might also be a great first step if you are considering getting involved in the SRC. Besides their day-to-day job, Student Reps also operate as a part of the SRC, meaning that they can pass any recurring problems to Academic Conveners and to the Vice President (Learning & Development) who can take further action on behalf of the students. All students are eligible to be representatives for their course; nominations will open in the first few weeks of each semester. Student Reps normally sit on a staff/student liaison committee held once a term but can go to staff at any time to discuss issues raised with them by classmates. They’ll mainly deal with problems about the timetable of lectures or essay deadline clashes but will also be involved in any disputes about teaching quality and other problems at school level.

If you want to contribute by becoming a member of Council, note that two General Rep positions are reserved by constitution to first year students, as well as two held for postgraduate students, who are elected in autumn each year. If you’re interested, obtaining a nomination is easy: to pick up a nomination form and find out more information, check out the election website at the link indicated above.

Student Reps are supported by the SRC, who offer specific training plus advice on more complicated matters. The training sessions for Student Reps are run by the SRC in conjunction with Student Participation in Quality Scotland (SPARQS), and attendance is reflected in the academic transcript.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES (class/course reps) w w w.glasgowstudent.net/about/ studentreps/

The SRC hold several campaigns every year, designed to raise awareness on issues such as prescription charges, flat hunting and bank charges. Campaigns are also one of the best ways to get involved in what the SRC does and any help and support is always

REPRESENTATION welcome. To find out what campaigns are going on and how you can take part check out the SRC’s website on the above address. THE RECTOR www.glasgowstudent.net/about/rector/ The Rector of the University of Glasgow is elected by the matriculated students of the University and the main role of the Rector is to represent the University’s students. The current Rector is Charles Kennedy MP. Elections for a new Rector will be held in 2011 so watch out for that! The Rector normally holds surgeries once a month in the SRC Advice Centre (ground floor of the John McIntyre Building). Dates and times of surgeries will be posted in advance on the webpage indicated above and are included in this diary. All are welcome to attend the surgeries and no appointment is needed. Each surgery is a great opportunity for students to share with the Rector any concerns they may have. The Rector can then take these issues to the University, or on a national level, acting as your representative.

SRC SERVICES THE ADVICE CENTRE www.glasgowstudent.net/advice advice@src.gla.ac.uk Whether you have a problem with your studies, your accommodation, your bank or anything else, the Advice Centre is there to help. The SRC runs this free service to advise and inform all students and prospective students of the University of Glasgow. The Advice Centre is totally independent from

the diary 2010/11

the University, so you can be confident that you’ll be provided with a fully confidential, impartial and objective service. No appointment is needed. The Advice Centre is staffed by professional, experienced advisors and offers confidential advice and information on a wide range of subjects, including academic problems, bank charges, benefits and tax credits, Council Tax, debt, employment rights, health issues, housing issues, Income Tax/National Insurance and student financial support. Staff may also be able to help you with issues such as academic appeals, formal complaints, disciplinary issues and plagiarism hearings. Often these issues can be resolved more easily if you deal with them at an early stage. If you think there might be a problem, come into the Advice Centre to talk it over as soon as you can, and an advice worker can help you decide your next step. The Advice Centre is located on the ground floor of the John McIntyre Building and is open on a drop-in basis from Mon 10.30am - 4pm, Tues-Thu 10am - 4pm and Fri 10am 3.30pm (opening hours during the holidays may vary). No appointment is needed and all discussions with the advice workers are in complete confidence. The Advice Centre staff will do their best to offer assistance on any other difficulties you might experience. If they can’t help, then they’re sure to know someone who will be able to. You will also find a wide variety of leaflets and claim forms available in The Advice Centre waiting area that can help with many issues. You can search the shop’s entire database of books online before you come in, so make it your first port of call when looking for course texts. Finally, if by the end of the year you have books you would like to re-sell, just take them to the Second Hand Bookshop and the staff will be happy to help you. Its opening times are Monday-Thursday 10am - 4pm, Fri 10am - 3.30pm. GET INVOLVED STUDENT MEDIA www.glasgowstudent.net/volunteer/media/ www.glasgowguardian.co.uk www.gum.glasgowstudent.net www.gust.tv www.subcity.org The SRC hosts and supports four awardwinning student media groups: Glasgow University Guardian, the student newspaper, Glasgow University Magazine, Glasgow University Student TV and Subcity Radio. They provide a great way to pick up a whole host of new skills and experience. New contributors are always welcome, and no experience is required. Just get in touch with the editors or controllers, who will be happy to provide you with more information or find them all online at the addresses listed above. STUDENT VOLUNTEER SUPPORT SERVICE (SVSS) www.glasgowstudent.net/volunteer/ volunteer@src.gla.ac.uk If you want to use your spare time to do something a bit different, check out what’s on offer through Student Volunteer Support Service (SVSS). The SVSS promotes volunteering opportunities for students on and off campus, providing valuable links with, and input into, the local community. There is a range

the diary 2010/11

of opportunities regardless of your level of commitment, from the Conversational English Programme, which provides the chance to help international students with their language skills (see dedicated section above), to more involved schemes like Buddy a Granny and the Classroom Support Scheme. SVSS projects are designed to let you engage with the local community from helping school pupils in classes, to providing refreshments for the homeless, and befriending the elderly in Glasgow and beyond. These rewarding activities give you the chance to meet interesting new people and build up your employability skills, as well as providing an opportunity to escape the West End and see a different side of the city. CONVERSATIONAL ENGLISH PROGRAMME f.mckenzie@src.gla.ac.uk www.glasgowstudent.net/volunteer This project gives international students the chance to meet with a student volunteer “tutor” for an hour or two each week to help improve their English language skills. Please note that this is not a language course and its aim is not to teach students how to speak English; but rather by engaging in conversation you can practice your spoken English and get help in areas you might be having problems with. You might even get the chance to teach a few words from your own language to your speaking partner! For more information, and if you want to become a tutor on the programme, you can contact the Student Volunteer Support Service co-ordinator, Fiona McKenzie, via the email address above.

GET INVOLVED CLUBS AND SOCIETIES www.glasgowstudent.net/clubs/ The SRC supports over 100 clubs and societies, devoted to pretty much every activity and interest imaginable. All are available to students of every level of interest and ability, and every year hundreds of students join a club or society for the first time. The SRC supports clubs and societies both financially and by providing a number of resources including free minibus hire, meeting facilities and operational advice. Check the SRC’s website for a full list of clubs and societies, contact details and websites. There’s something for every taste, and if nothing takes your fancy, it’s really easy to set up your own. SRC EVENTS www.glasgowstudent.net/events/ www.glasgowstudent.net/events/diary The SRC organises several events throughout the year, including Freshers’ Week, Media Week, RAG week, and international events, giving you the opportunity to find out more about things you’re interested in, or just another opportunity to get involved and have fun. For the full listing of events check out the Diary section on the SRC’s website at www. glasgowstudent.net OTHER STUDENT BODIES Besides the SRC, three other student bodies make sure your time at Glasgow is always full of opportunities to socialise, cultivate your interests, keep healthy and have fun. Each one of them is briefly described below;

for more info, check out their websites. In this section you will also find information about the Mature Students Association, which is open to all mature, post-graduate, DACE and ACCESS students. GLASGOW UNIVERSITY UNION www.theguu.com Glasgow University Union or GUU is one of the two social unions on campus, and is located at the bottom of University Avenue. It has 9 bars, including the traditional Beer Bar and the recently renovated Deep 6, as well as an 800 capacity nightclub, a canteen, Subway, Costa Coffee and the biggest student billiards hall in Britain. They run lots of different events, such as quizzes, open mic nights, comedy nights, Karaoke and Dodgeball tournaments. There’s a strong tradition of debating in the GUU: previous union debaters include Charles Kennedy, Menzies Campbell and the late Donald Dewar. The GUU is run by its Board of Management, which is made up of 17 students and 7 non-students. There are a large number of committees that allow students to get involved with the running of various aspects of the Union, such as the Games, Libraries and Entertainments Committees. They organise everything from the three club nights a week to the Union’s publication, the GUUi. QUEEN MARGARET UNION www.qmu.org.uk The Queen Margaret Union, more popularly known as the QM, is the other social Union, just up the road from the GUU. Founded in 1890 as part of the Queen Margaret University (which later merged with the University of Glasgow), it caters for www.glasgowstudent.net

GET INVOLVED the social and cultural needs of its Glasgow student members by providing a range of services and events including quiz nights, open-mic nights, live sports on the big screen, and amateur comedy in addition to clubnights, catering, shop facilities, and bars. There are also 24-hour study facilities. It is located at the top of University Gardens. Similarly to the GUU, the QMU is managed by an elected board of students, alongside a number of committees open to all members which organise the union’s club nights, its social events, and its award-winning magazine, qmunicate. GLASGOW UNIVERSITY SPORTS ASSOCIATION (GUSA) www.glasgow.ac.uk/sport GUSA represents every student that participates in sport and recreation at the University. Traditionally, GUSA has been strongly related to club sport and they still provide funding and travel for the 48 sports clubs at Glasgow. However, their role is much bigger and they work in partnership with the University’s Sport and Recreation (SRS – see below) to deliver an incredible range of sport and recreation opportunities. Whether you go to the gym once a term or you play sport for Scotland, they represent you and work to bring about any changes you believe sport at Glasgow needs. GUSA is made up of a council of 16 annually elected students with a full-time President at its head. They cover all areas of activity at university from recreational and club sport to charities and outreach. You should look out for GUSA’s legendary events. Their annual sports ball is the biggest in Scotland and Their numerous charity nights and

There’s a Quick Query drop-in service at lunchtime for those who need a quick meeting with a Careers Adviser (to have your CV checked, for example), or you can book an interview if you need to discuss your career options in more depth – to do this just click on “Making a Careers Appointment” on their website. Careers Advisers will be out on campus delivering talks and seminars to your course. Topics include career planning, www.glasgowstudent.net

UNIVERSITY SERVICES effective applications and interviews, and finding work experience. Your college will organise and advertise these, and it’s worth coming along. Don’t think you should only see the Careers Service if you already know what you want to do. If you have no ideas about your career direction they can help you generate some and therefore enable you to use your time as a student more effectively. The Club 21 Work Experience Programme is unique to the University of Glasgow. Club 21 offers students (usually 2nd year and beyond) the opportunity to gain valuable work experience with a prestigious organisation. Check the Careers Service website for more details on how to apply and what companies are recruiting. The Information Resource Centre, located in the Fraser Building, contains a wide range of careers and further study information. Whether you plan to work in the UK or overseas, you will have access to information about a wide range of work opportunities and funding sources. Visit as often as you like: no appointment necessary and a member of the Team is available every day from 2 – 4 to help with your information enquiries. The Careers Service is open 9am - 5pm, Mon to Fri. The Registry and WebSURF www.gla.ac.uk/registry www.websurf.gla.ac.uk The Registry is responsible for students’ records and matters such as registering students, examinations, distribution of grant and loan cheques, financial aid and tuition fees. Services Enquiry Team (see above). WebSURF, run by the Registry, is the electronic students’ records system. You can use WebSURF to manage all of your personal as well as academic information by accessing www.websurf.gla.ac.uk. Click on the login prompt in the top righthand corner of the WebSURF home page and enter your university login ID and password. This will be the same login ID and password that you normally use for logging into computers on the University Network. Further help and instructions are accessible from the home page if you require it. Once you are logged in, you will have access to your information. It is your responsibility to ensure your personal and academic data is kept up to date during your time at the University of Glasgow. When you are finished using WebSURF, make sure that you log out. If you do not log out of WebSURF properly, it is possible another person may be able to change some of your details, especially if you are accessing university services from a public location. If you experience any technical problems whilst using WebSURF please contact surfhelp@gla.ac.uk. International Student Support www.gla.ac.uk/international/ internationalstudentsupport internationalstudentsupport@admin.gla. ac.uk Moving away from home and adjusting to a new country and its culture can sometimes be difficult. This is why the University has a dedicated International Student Support Team, who deal with international students’

UNIVERSITY SERVICES welfare and act as a liaison in these matters with other university services and external organisations. The International Student Support Team provide advice and support to international students and their families on a range of non-academic welfare matters such as immigration and visa issues, financial matters, Council Tax, banking, as well as pastoral support. They also organise the international students’ orientation programmes in September and January, and social gatherings throughout the year. As well as this, they run a number of information workshops on important issues such as employment after study, student immigration matters and cultural issues. You will get regular emails from the team letting you know about all of their events. To see an international student advisor you will need to book an appointment through the Student Services Enquiry Team (level 2 of the Fraser Building). If you are an international student or even a home student interested in socialising with people from all over the world, then the International Society might also be a great place to start, with over 1,000 members. Check out their programme at: www. internationalsociety.co.uk. The Student Network www.gla.ac.uk/studentnetwork/ studentnetwork@gla.ac.uk The Student Network gives first year students the chance to get advice from current students, who have already completed the course you are about to start, giving you the opportunity to ask those questions about studying at Glasgow that other services may not have the answers to. This is a great tool

to get an insider’s view on how university works and get practical tips to get you through the occasional trials and tribulations of student life. For more information visit the above website or send them an e-mail.

If you are new to academic practice and need some help and reassurance about making the transition between school and University, the ELAs will be able to help you out. The SLS also provides advice and support relating to numeracy skills, mathematics and statistics through the Maths Advisor and Co-ordinator of NUMBER: Student Mathematical Support. English as a Foreign Language www.gla.ac.uk/services/languagecentre/ efl/ The University’s Language Centre has an English as a Foreign Language Unit that runs both pre-session and in-session English language courses for international students who wish to improve their language skills. They will also check your essays for spelling and grammar for a small charge and arrange language exchange between staff and

students via the Moodle site. Check out their website for more information. Equality and Diversity Unit www.gla.ac.uk/services/equalitydiversity Based at Level 2 on the South Front of the Main Building, the Equality and Diversity Unit (EDU) has responsibility for developing and implementing policy and promoting best practice on age, disability, gender, race, sexual orientation, religion and belief, and bullying and harassment. The EDU also provides confidential advice and guidance to students on any matter relating to equality and diversity. They also try to ensure that students’ opinion is taken into account when developing new policies or initiatives. Student Counselling and Advisory Service www.gla.ac.uk/services/counselling 0141 330 4528 The SCAS is a confidential service available to all registered students experiencing emotional difficulties. The service offers a range of help, including pre-counselling consultations, individual counselling over the shorter-term, supportive guidance and referral. The website provides more detailed information about the service as well as comprehensive information about other sources of help and access to various self help materials. The SCAS is located at 65 Oakfield Avenue and is normally open between 9am and 5.30pm on weekdays during semesters and during holidays when possible. Residential Services and Student Halls www.gla.ac.uk/services/residentialservices/ 73 Great George Street accom@gla.ac.uk

Most sites have a staffed reception area that acts as the first point of contact for any problems or enquiries related to student halls during office hours.

Student halls don’t just provide safe accommodation at a reasonable walking distance from campus, but are also one of the best opportunities to meet people and make new friends in first year. If you live in student halls, then that means the University is your landlord and all matters related to that are dealt with by Residential Services, which is based at 73 Great George Street. Your rental agreement includes utilities bills, block halls, personal possessions insurance, and in some sites cleaning of any shared living spaces. If you have any enquiries regarding the agreement, or if you are experiencing problems which make it difficult for you to pay the rent, it is strongly recommended that you contact Residential Services at the earliest possible opportunity. Their staff will be able to help you and advise you. Also, if for any reason you wish to change accommodation, you should get in touch directly with the office at 73 Great George Street. Please note, however, that room changes are generally only allowed after the first four weeks of term one. Should there be a fault or damage to your flat/room, you should contact a member of staff on site or at Residential Services, and in

the diary 2010/11

Pastoral support is provided at all sites outside of office hours and at weekends by a team of wardens and senior residents who live in the properties and act as a first point of contact and support for any problem with the property or welfare issues you might be experiencing. You will be provided with information on how to reach them in person or via phone at your hall of residence. A further social aspect of life in student halls is provided by the Halls Committees. These are elected at the beginning of each year at all undergraduate halls and are responsible for organising social gatherings for the residents of each hall and facilitate their integration. Each committee is provided with a small budget to help with the organisation of events. Safety is key when living in halls, and you should always be wary of basic good practice such as locking doors and closing windows when you are leaving the property, and reporting anything suspicious to staff. Remember that all halls of residence are connected with campus by a free minibus service provided by the SRC in the evenings during term time. For the timetable please see the SRC Minibus Timetable on the inside back cover. Alternatively, you can view it online at: www. glasgowstudent.net/services/minibus/. Basic internet access is offered free of charge

UNIVERSITY SERVICES at all sites. If you want to upgrade to a higher level of service you should contact the providers directly on www.uoghelp.co.uk (except for students living at Wolfson Hall who should contact Residential Services directly).

wholesome, they also run social nights every second Wednesday. Just check out the details on their website.

Finally, if you enjoyed your time at halls so much you want to stay for another year, remember you can apply for re-admission from February onwards and generally speaking there are very good chances you will get a place.

The Interfaith Chaplaincy is a resource for all students and staff.

Otherwise, Residential Services can help you to find new rented accommodation on the private market: they run the Private Accommodation Database (PAD), a list of landlords registered with the University that can be accessed online. For more information visit: http://www.gla. ac.uk/undergraduate/accommodation/ privateaccommodation/

Interfaith Chaplaincy www.gla.ac.uk/services/chaplaincy/

Its two Chaplaincy centres, in the West Quadrangle and at 15 Southpark Terrace, consists of chaplains and advisers from Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Humanist, Jewish, Muslim, and Sikh communities who are available to speak to any student regardless of their religious viewpoint. The University Interfaith Room is located next to the Chapel and CafĂŠ 1A The Square, and is available to all faith communities for reflection, prayer, meetings and events.

Glasgow Student Enterprise www.glasgow.ac.uk/gse justask@enterprise.gla.ac.uk Student Enterprise helps students to develop new enterprising skills through hands-on learning, competitions and social events. They have a huge variety of initiatives ranging from the original cashprize Big Idea Competition and expert advice if you want to start a business to the more unconventional (but nevertheless very enterprising) university services Agent to the Stars and Confidence and Creativity Challenge. They know there is something to suit you whether you want to be your own boss or just want to increase your chances of getting a great job once you leave university.
