Phuket, Thailand’s largest island, is located approximately 862 kilometres south of Bangkok. Its limestone cliffs, white powdery beaches, tranquil broad bays and tropical in-land forests contribute to making it Thailand’s most popular island. TRAINING COURSE SCHEDULE The course is full-time over 4 weeks. Course hours are: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday - 10 am to 5 pm with one hour for lunch, Thursday and Friday - 10 am to 1 pm followed by teaching your 1 hour class during the afternoon. Teaching practice starts at 2 pm every Thursday and Friday. When you arrive, you will be given a detailed course timetable and your teaching practice schedule.
ARRIVAL ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE COURSE The course starts at 9:30 am sharp. Please try to arrive at 9:15 am because you will have to sign the register and hand in your signed course payment receipts.

TRAVEL DOCUMENTS FOR THAILAND Are you already in Thailand? If you are, ignore this section. Your passport Make sure that your passport will have at least 6 months life left on it when you travel to Thailand. If it doesn't, you will have problems. Tourist visa Visitors to Thailand from the United Kingdom, North America, Australia and New Zealand can stay in Thailand for a maximum of 30 days without a visa. This can easily be extended (once only, for 10 days) at the Phuket branch of the Immigration Division. Citizens from all other countries should contact their local Thai consulate to obtain current travel regulations.

We recommended that you apply for a Tourist Visa allowing you to stay for sixty days. This can be extended for an additional thirty days at the discretion of the Thai Immigration Office. Check with your country's Thai embassy or consulate to find out what your specific entry requirements are to cover the 28 day TESOL TEFL course period. Before you send a deposit you must check with your nearest Thai embassy or consulate as to exactly what you need to do in order to apply for a tourist visa to enter Thailand. In order to take the course you must have a tourist visa that will allow you to stay in Thailand for 5 weeks. Make sure you have your visa BEFORE you send your deposit. Holders of Tourist Visas are required to enter the country within ninety days of the visa being issued.

Your passport with your visa stamp with at least 6 months left to run on it (with a visa if you need one – refer to the visa section for more information). A round-trip or onward travel ticket if you aren't already in Thailand. If you arrive only with a one-way ticket and passport control asks to see your return ticket, they will force you to buy a return ticket on the spot. This will be very expensive. WHAT KIND OF CLOTHES SHOULD I BRING? There are no specific dress rules when you attend class, but we ask that you respect your peers and the fact that you are a visitor in another country. There are specific dress requirements for teaching practice sessions that conform with the local working and professional culture. You are expected to dress smart casual as per the following guidelines. Women Shoulders should be covered (blouses with sleeves). No low-cut necklines or very short skirts. Bare midriffs must not be visible, even when lifting arms up. Open-toed shoes are acceptable, but no hiking boots, sneakers/trainers or beach sandals.

Airport Bus provides transportation service between Phuket Town and the Phuket International Airport. At the Airport, the Bus stops directly at the Departure Terminal. The service runs from 9 am until 8 pm and takes about 80 minutes to get to downtown Phuket. Prices vary from 30 to 100 Baht depending on your destination. Taxis There is a taxi stand outside the main building. Official taxis are red and yellow. MAKE SURE the driver turns his meter on. If you do not you will end up with an ugly scene bargaining and haggling for a price. An average fare from the airport to Phuket is 400 Baht and YOU HAVE TO pay a fee of 100 baht on top of the taxi-meter fare as a tip. DO NOT use any other taxis because they are not official and therefore are NOT insured.

WHAT IS THE TEFL JOB MARKET IN THAILAND LIKE? The TEFL job market in Thailand is always good. Don't delay looking for a job until you start running out of your savings. The best time to look is when you finish the course and we get your resume sent out to the schools that we supply teachers to in Phuket. Most schools do not care whether you have a work permit or not.
WHAT IS THE AVERAGE SALARY FOR AN ENGLISH TEACHER? The average salary in Phuket is about 30,000 to 40,000 Baht per month. This varies depending on what type of school or company you work for and whether you work full or part-time. We do not recommend that you accept less than 25,000 baht per month unless the school is also throwing in some other incentives like free language lessons.

MORE ABOUT PHUKET Local transportation Phuket is a great place to see on foot, but there is also local transportation. The easiest ways to make your way around the island are via motorbike taxi or tuktuk (a small truck-like taxi). When hiring a taxi always negotiate and agree to a price before accepting the ride. There is a local bus network that circles the island; however, it is very slow and unreliable. Cars and motorcycles are available for hire locally. Drinking water

QUESTIONS ABOUT LVING IN PHUKET What are the average housing and living expenses when working in Thailand? Most likely you will rent a room in an apartment or house with other teachers or with Thais, and of course it depends on where you choose to live. A pleasant, small 2 to 3 bedroom house in Phuket is about 8,000 to 10,000 baht per month. Apartments are available for less. It is fair to say that TEFL teachers are well-paid by local standards in Thailand, which means they can afford a comfortable standard of living. A local (Thai) teacher in Thailand earns around 6,000 to 8,000 Baht (about 130 - 180 dollars) while a TEFL teacher at the same school can expect to earn 40,000 baht - about $US1,000 per month. While this may not sound a lot by international standards, it means you can live comfortably in Thailand. How much money should I bring? You should budget to spend between 250 Dollars (Spartan life) to 500 Dollars (good life) for the period covering the 28 day course. If you want to stay and work in Phuket or the rest of Thailand you should budget between 500 to 1,000 Dollars to cover finding apartments in Phuket and living expenses until you get your first pay-check. It is then converted to a work permit after a considerable amount of paperwork is completed. What if I get sick in Phuket? If you find yourself requiring medical attention, Phuket has a number of very good hospitals and clinics with well-educated, helpful doctors. There are also plenty of pharmacies . If you decide to get a job in Thailand and start paying Thai income tax, you are entitled to Social Security, which gives you medical cover at a local specified hospital. However, we do recommend that you get private health insurance before you travel.
