The macroscopic background of my major concern delves into the ongoing degeneration process of this hydrological system, and the accompanied further desertification. This project takes Tarim basin - Taklimakan Desert and the downstream of Tarim River running through it - as a significant example, The blind agricultural development and reckless resources practice which exploit water, forests, grasslands, and subsoil since the 1950s have precipitated droughts, desertification and ongoing collapse of the ecosystem alongside the downstream of Tarim. The tension between the rigid demand for development and scarce of water resource is in peril and needs immediate relief. The original water resource for Tarim river is snow on top of Tianshan Mountain melt by the monsoon come from west every spring, while 55% of the volume is unfortunately wasted by evaporation from the plain reservoir and shallow level of groundwater, limited can be eventually consumed by local farmland. My solution is inspired by the ancient underground canal system called Qanat, which has served people living in the arid climate for centuries and proved to be effective in preventing the evaporation of water by condensing moisture in the air, storing water underground and integrating back into the natural ecosystem. This thesis intends to optimize the ancient water conservancy facilities according to the local context, form a self-sustained, smart system as backbone/ framework to provoke and update the local pattern of development. The surplus volume of saved and harvested water by the system can be used to benefit the downstream area as a benign chain reaction and eventually boon the whole downstream region.

Local Economies - Rigid Demand

Although it has been forbidden by the central government, new farmland was still secretly reclaimed due to rigid demand for development, exacerbating the perils of mining groundwater. So the central government took several measures as a response to this messy situation. First is the ecological water transport from 2000, in order to save the endangered green corridor of downstream, but ironically the farmlands alongside usually try to steal the water and disrupt the saving plan for the sake of saving their own ass. Another measure improves the irrigation technique, for instance, drip irrigation, but this provokes another problem, that the new technic requires more electric power, which is currently hard to achieve without exploring new resources.

Provoke of Urbanization //correspond to local context

I took the No.33 and No.34 mission field as operation field to practice this approach, where cotton farming is the only preliminary industry and nearly 17 thousand people suffering from the vicious circle of unstable agricultural production due to the scarcity of water. With Qanat system as the backbone, the supply of water can be guaranteed and furthermore the rigid demand for development can be accomplished. And with the rich resource of solar energy of this region, the problem of electric power can also be solved. The out of date idea of development has to be updated.

Study of Prototypes Since this infrastructure framework expends itself like vine roots and reaches to almost every corner of the artificial land-practice area. It also has its merit to benignly influence the daily life of local people. So several prototypes are developed in order to explain the integration of the framework itself with the daily life of local people, explain how the framework could do to optimize people’s living condition and how could it integrate with social and economic activities.

This experimental operation can provide a promising solution to the crisis of water globally and pattern of urbanization within similar areas. Since this certain type of framework is based on the local topography and water accumulation path, the growth and formation of urbanization should also follow certain guide which has already been set up by nature. Moreover, due to the feature of high dependence on water, this certain kind of urbanization should be bond along with the guarantee of ecosystem safety, stabilization of groundwater level. Otherwise, the demand of development should never be able to gain all the benefits. Actually, this is not challenging to achieve since the framework - Qanat - itself has a capability of integrating into nature and live in harmony for centuries.

Concept Generation This project regards the site as a whole, which is rippled by the trace of both collective memories and private memories before and after the tsunami. Metaphorically it reminds people of scenes in Noah covenant - pieces of land are surfaced after the fading of the flood. It is basically based on the past, yet also implies the hope of new life. It is an ocean of memories, yet also an ocean of hope. The project converts the forces generated from the pre-existing fabric of cityscape, into complex forms using as a trigger to evoke multiple programs. By means of the algorithm, firstly it balances cut and fill’s volume, then manipulates details within each block. The resulting structure is complex, without single hierarchy or organizing principle. The project tries not to make thickened surfaces as a mosaic-like field of multiple orders, which has different layers of program collaborated with each other. It aims to create co-existing/parallel condition between memory/past, daily life/present and future, between “eternity” and “impermanent”, in a fairly balanced and gentle way of expression. By applying different layers of elements onto series of certain programs, the design seeks to a subtle atmosphere to the current condition. As fields of events, the changing process also matters in our project. A four-dimensional interdependent system is formed basing on the above process. The timetable for construction procedures will be considered. The growth unit (like a cell) will be defined, developed via the attachment to the structure of infrastructure. By converting forces generated from the pre-existing fabric of cityscape into topographical form, multiple programs are evoked. By means of the algorithm, first balance cut & fill volume, then manipulate detail within each block. The resulting structure is a complex fabric, without single hierarchy or single organizing principle, instead of creating thickened surface forms a mosaic-like field with multiple orders, with different layers of program collaborate with each other. There are two dominant features of the shaped landscape. One dominant feature is the erected monumental wall with different scales. The height of lowest walls range from 0.4 to 1 meter, this gentle scale of the sculptured landscape can serve as a bench and slightly draw lines between different zones. The medium walls can reach up to 1.5 - 3 meters, text documenting the past of this area is engraved on the walls, as a form of monument. The highest walls can reach up to 5 - 16 meters, serve as service stations, toilets, and bicycle rental points, while the highest three points serve as a church, museum, and library. Another dominant feature is the wetland system. With the reshaping of landform by the cut-fill method, water from the adjacent river is introduced into the park and form an organic shape of juxtaposed wetland system and individual ponds, while linked with each other under the ground. The height of water surface varies according to the tidal. This gentle change also plays an important part in the expression of time, at the same time echoes the theme of permanence and impermanence of life.

Evolving Network PRE-URBAN: DAGON VILLAGE FROM 11TH CENTURY AD TO 1750S Records indicate that the ancient religious monuments such as Shwedagon Pagoda and Sule Pagoda were constructed when Yangon was a rural village by the name of Dagon, which had existed since the 11th century AD. PRE-COLONIAL TOWN: YANGON FROM 1750S TO 1850S

THE NEW COLONIAL CAPITAL CITY: MODEL CITY IN SOUTHEAST ASIA AFTER 1885

Yangon remained irregular small town of low density, roads and streets were loosely organized, judged sadly unimpressive by British who arrived on its shores. Before the English East India Company (EEIC) usurped control of Yangon and designated the town as their main port in Burma, it was a sleepy harbor settled by farmers and seasonal traders living in simple wooden or bamboo structures.

During World War II, the residential buildings suffered significantly. Shortage of residential buildings compounded with the influx of population to the capital and the rent control act(1947), led to the slum and squatter settlement formation in and around the city center. Consequently, by the 1950s new settlements had to be developed to resettle the squatters and thus relieve the pressure of the city centre.

It was planned and built around Sule Pagoda, basically a log fortress, with the river frontage in the south and the present Maha Bandoola Garden, Pansodan and Bo Aung Kyaw streets in the north and Theinbyu Street in the east. THE NEW COLONIAL CAPITAL CITY: RANGOON SINCE 1850S, FRASER PLAN After the Second Burmese War in1852, the EEIC decided to transfer their center of operations to Rangoon and set about creating a rational, orderly city that would promote trade and instigate a British world order, transforming the loosely organized Burmese port into a proper city befitting the British Empire. Following the precedence set in Singapore, a grid of major and minor streets along with a hierarchy of land lots was superimposed on to the city. The belief was that a properly designed city where its functions are clearly legible and its sanitation and safety guarantees the health of its residents and visitors would promote progress and prosperity.

YANGON BETWEEN 1960S AND 1980S EXPANDING NORTHWARDS

Because of the two natural barriers, the Hlaing River in the west and south and the Pazundaung Creek in the east, the city was expanding northwards leaving the CBD, where all the administrative, commercial, banking and other activities were still concentrated, in the south.

First proposed by Dr.William Montgomerie and later amended by Lieutenant A. Fraser, the plan of Rangoon evolved to a much larger city centered on the Sule Pagoda. The swamp that encircled Sule Pagoda was filled in to create a continuous stretch of elevated city from Judah Ezekial Street (now Theinbyu Road) in the east to Godwin Road (now Lanmadaw Street) in the west and from Strand Road in the south to Montgomerie Street (now Bogyoke Aung San Road) in the north.

GREATER YANGON CITY AFTER 1988

STUDY OF STREETSCAPE Two distinct urban development trends can be observed in Yangon city after 1988. The first is planned urban expansion towards the east and west and the second is urban densification through the planned slum and squatter upgrading and urban renewal schemes.

PLANNED URBAN EXPANSION AROUND 1990S

Since 1988, Yangon city has experienced major land use changes. In an attempt to balance the elongated south to the north growth of the city limits, the Government started to develop New Towns in the east and west. Dagon North and Dagon South on the east side of the city; enlarged Hlaing Thayar on the west side of the Hlaing river and Shwepyitha north of Insein was developed to absorb the population of around half a million. In 1990, the State Law and Order Restoration Council enacted the law which invested the Yangon City Development Committee with powers to convert Yangon into a city of international standards. To further relieve the pressure on the CBD, YCDC relocated wholesale activities to Hlaing Township where also a new regional market was constructed. URBAN DENSIFICATION PRESENT Urban densification has been attempted through upgrading of slums and squatter settlements as well as urban renewal schemes in prime areas. Slum and squatter settlements have been upgraded through a popular ‘hut to apartment’ scheme in which slum or squatter dwellers are allocated apartment built on the same site while utilizing the area gained from densification to cross-subsidize the construction and provision of basic infrastructure.

As Myanmar totally fell to the British in 1885, Yangon with its favorable port conditions became the capital city to replace Mandalay. With planning and construction of a lot of buildings erected to enable the British to control and manage the local population and exploit the resources of the country, Yangon has become the model city in Southeast Asia, both in planning and building design.

Various expression of street facade and activity

POST INDEPENDENCE CAPITAL 1950S, NEW SETTLEMENTS

KEY PLAN 1:10000 19th street is located inside the China town inside downtown Yangon, it links the Strand road to the south side and the Anawratha road to the north side. It possesses quite rich and vibrant features in both physical and social aspects. The diverse building styles, i.e., facade and height of buildings, including chinese style and Victoria style bring exotic feeling to the streetscape. The richness of social activities, especially at night, brings exciting chaos to the street. Due to the narrow scale, lack of public community space and unorganized condition drew our attention. We intend to keep the vibrant and diversity of the street, and at the same time, try to build an organized and neet social system to street. Bringing vibrant order is our final purpose.

History of thr Mother Canal

486 BC, the excavation of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal began.

Concept Generation In order to revitalize Pier No.7 again, and also to make sure that the mother canal will not be forgotten by the next generation, the project introduces water of mother river into the oil depot, which was also a previous pier - Pier No.7, where obsoleted oil drums are still standing there. We drown the foundation of oil drums. It seems like the place is submerged, but actually a rebirth instead. Life of the mother canal will be activated again in another modality, it is presented in a new form of design: people entering the water, on their heads water is flowing and nourishing, from the mother canal through various forms of experience and via participating in various cultural activities related to the mother canal, people can remind the history, think of memory of the past and look into the future.

With the canal, city of Hangzhou thrived.

The canal witnessed the development of itself from boom to bust.

Pattern & Tension

In history, due to the restriction of construction skill, architecture relies on the thick and complete envelope to shelter and support the weight, which certainly sacrifices the interior lighting or windy quality. This project investigates in the limit of envelope design, which may not only function as partitions but also as shading, structure , circulation and spatial program. It proposes precast fabrication methods using continuous geometry that are tested through a series of facade modules. The search for a performing envelope starts from the module property that can vary in size and depth. The environmental analyses of these modules, on a selected site in Hong Kong, further informed their design performances.

This project investigates in the limit of envelope design, which may not only function as partitions but also as shading, structure, circulation and spatial program. By comparing with the five prototype unit modules, the triangle module is proved to be structural optimal since it has the densest saddle surface. With various tension imposed, the basic shape of modules changes accordingly, which may vary in size and depth. Thus various assembled pattern could be achieved, which would accommodate various program for various purpose.

By means of physical simulation, I intended to simulate the shape of fabric by control the dragging points and distance. However, the fabricated surface via simulation turned out to be still artificial when compared with fabrication output with melted and reshaped plastic cardboard. So my final decision is to get the shape by dragging real fabric and fix the shape by resin. Later use plaster layer by layer to manually generate natural shape and contours.

The Path | Sandy Hook Permanent Memorial

CONCEPT NARRATIVE Our proposal for the Sandy Hook Permanent Memorial is called THE PATH. By utilizing the topography to the utmost, the slightly bent path initially starts from the threshold of the site, gradually descends towards the lowest point of the site with oblique polished black marble walls on both sides. Hook Elementary School. The water of the existing pond is pumped underground eventually join its original source. The polished marble wall reflects the sparkle of the creek’s surface in both daylight and lighting under water during the evening. The lowest, also the inflection, point of the path is a bit wider and forms a small plaza facing towards the upper big lawn on the side which is nearer to the school. The wall tilting upwards obliques dramatically to form a path towards the upper lawn. So visitors can climb up the slope and look out to the direction of the school. With circle Mobius-like benches on the lawn, which indicates the circle of life, visitors can sit out and conduct whatever they want as commemorative activities. The path then changes direction and passes through the existing pond. Finally, it ascends again to the adjacent Treadwell Memorial Park in the south of the site as a mediator. The ending and the beginning, with almost the same altitude, are actually symmetrical and mirror each other in an emblematic way. It reveals itself as the act of starting off right at the FIN of the path.

PERCENTAGES OF OPH

Living alone phenomenon is the fastest-growing living typology worldwide, including Europe, North America, and Asia. The prevalence of one-person household (OPH) will continue to increase due to various ethnographic trends. And the more economically developed societies witness the highest proportion of OPH. According to recent studies from demographic scholars, solo-living style is becoming more of a positive urban middle-class lifestyle instead of a negative stereotype of social isolation. And this is more about the idea of self-introspection and self-consciousness. The domination of one’s personal living space is a philosophy of domination of one’s own consciousness. Every detail inside the living space has become part of the owner’s insight. The space is just right to handle the owner’s seclusion and world-engagement. The house of self-consciousness is placed at a highly busy intersection that can be anywhere in an economically developed society. It is a unit lifted above the ground and only interact with the sky and the earth. A nook away from the intense movement, but still be present in the urban context. The characteristic of the nook is defined by slightly distorted cubic with an equivocal relationship between ceiling and walls, and the challenge to conventional threshold. The dimension of the space one can exercise control over is decided by the distance one’s consciousness can reach out of. Such being the case, the dimension has become a token of self-consciousness.

The Paradox of Water Issue in Shenzhen

“Fresh Water Shortage” vs “Water Logging” Academic Work Tutor

Bin JIANG and Andrew TOLAND

Independent Research Work

March - June, 2015

The paradox of water issue in Shenzhen is a problem intimately relevant to citizens’ daily life which needs to be solved urgently. On one hand, as a southern coastal city surrounded by water, it is quite

ironic that almost 70% of Shenzhen’ s freshwater supply comes from Dong River of exterior area, which means the high external dependence of water supply is the sword of Damocles always hanging overhead the Shenzhen citizens, a slight fluctuation will

lead to the sounding of alarm. On the other hand, water logging during rainy season, especially storm which happens frequently

during summer, puts most part of the urban transport system into an paralyzing situation, which also cost the wealth and efforts of its citizens.

This project aims at combining these two aspects of issues which are closely related and trying to find some common ground between these two issues. After some basic research of causes which

contribute to these two aspects separately, the answer revealed it-

self - the lack of large water body which could serve as a main fresh water supply resource and at the same time as an adequate rain

water harvesting container - plays an important role in both issues.

The next step is based on this foundation and trying to analyze the advantages of current main water supply resource for Shenzhen, in the view of geography, topography and ecology. Then by means of topography analysis and animation in GIS and Grasshopper,

comparing the storage capacity of existing reservoirs inside Shen-

zhen, which are inadequate for citizens’ present and future water requirement, trying to find some expansion potential within these

reservoirs. By means of developing this idea, it would be ideal if some of these reservoirs could be developed into adequate large rain water harvesting containers and partially solve these two issues at the same time.

Photography

光を描くために,影をかいています。 —— 井上雄彦 “The reason to depict shadow is to characterize light.” As a fan of famous cartoonist Takehiko Inoue, I also believe in what he believes. Freezing the “moments” of light is a way of “seeing“ that can hardly be achieved by naked eyes. And this process allows me to explore the potential relationships between disparate fascinations. It is another way of communicating with things external.

Drawing and Art Works

In order to draw and express, the only proper way is to watch and keep on watching. And it makes drawing an irreplaceable way to delicately perceive things external and sense the nature and rhythm of forms and performance, nature and architecture.
