Allmannajuvet Zinc Mine Museum

Allmannajuvet Zinc Mine Museum Peter Zumthor

A project that spread itself across a Norwegian road. It is particular in the way that it interacts with the landscape. Due to the cliff-like nature of the site, the building is lifted into the air by timber supports. It acts like an outpost with a view looking down the slope.

The timber structure completely surrounds the black box, with a simple steel roof sheeting sitting above it as protection against rainfall. There is a certain elegance in the way such narrow support is exposed and holding the structure in place.

The boxed shape on the outside is quite simple, but the interior plays with the voids like a carving. Corridors are tall and narrow while exhibitions are compressed into with light apertures designed to give focus upon the artefacts.

The interior is painted black, to remove as much of the visual senses as possible. The eyes rely on the tonal shapes created by subtle reflections, mimicking the conditions of the mines.
