Th e SH A PE of K n owl e d g e - Modeled with Maya, Rhino - Rendered with Keyshot, Photoshop - Team of 2 students

Focused on an architecture that challenges the presumption of an architectural front and engages a design discussion centered on a multitude of orientations. The design involves a set of architectural profiles, seemingly unrelated, in order to create an architectural mass and volume(s) that oscillate between singular and multiple, hidden and exposed – to design a building that is all front. The existing relationship of Sci Arc’s historic building to it’s Arts District neighborhood is minimized by the surrounding industrial and large scale residential buildings.

The GIDDY City - Modeled with Rhino, Grasshopper, Maya - Rendered with Vray, Keyshot - Drawings are done with illustrator

My thesis investigates the potential for an alternative high-density urbanism that moves away from the conventional grid diagram. It explores a push-pull, interjectional urbanism that plays with the graphic forms of Roy Lichtenstein or Jeff Koons artwork, where abstraction and figuration converge. The Giddy city mediates between attracting and repelling urban programs, architectural elements, and landscape features to shift the urban diagram from static to dynamic. Also rather than solely focusing on the plan, my project seeks to exploit fully the section and other views. The Giddy city has to be experienced dynamically and cannot be comprehended from any single views.

Parts to PLAY - Modeled with Rhino, Grasshopper - Rendered with Keyshot - Drawings are done in illustrator - Team of 4 students

The project is a new proposal for a museum in Cologne. The site extends between the river and the church with the train tracks running through the center. It starts with how different views of the same composition could be layered and recombined to produce symmetry and difference. 4 types of composition including, linear (A), puzzle, courtyard and random were explored. Two views of the same composition was placed together to explore ideas of doubling and near symmetry. The outlines from multiple views were swapped or combined to produce new ideas about containment, inside and outside (B). The outline in the scheme is about creating not only new space but separating and reformatting the figures in new ways. The outline figure acts as a boundary which performs in a variety of ways. It enclosed spaces, contains objects loosely, thickens objects or carves through. New ground was created sectionally to integrate with existing ground. Volumes are nested or embedded, subtracted, added and impressed within the site (C, D, E).

Rep lic a - Modeled with Maya, Rhino - Rendered with Keyshot - Texture and voxels produced with processing - Team of 2 students

In this case study, starting from a Thonet chair, which has fundamental geometries that derived from a series of tangent curvilinear wood elements, the research approaches the object in its spatial organization first and functional definition after. Our specific interest relies on the relation, combination and misalignment of the splines with straight lines. Whereas, surfaces are derived from the thonet curves. Deep skin with voxels that are produced from the texture scarifications, creates new understanding of the surfaces which also blend with the structural tubes at certain locations. Texture map is carefully placed based on the programs and functions of the interior space.
