Good Times Ahead at Corte Bella Can you believe we are about to enter into the last quarter of the year, already? The Arizona Summertime (otherwise known as the one hundred days of hell) is coming to a close once again. Whew! Although a lot of folks are not bothered by the extreme heat, I think Mike Arrington, General Manager most are glad to get back to more normal, cooler temperatures and the outdoor activities that we know and love. There is much to do in Corte Bella during the beautiful Fall, Winter and Spring months and what I love the most is the outdoor activity. You begin to see folks you have not seen in months, friends and neighbors are out walking, riding, running, and the Corte Bella pets might be the ones that enjoy it the most. Golf, Tennis, Pickle Ball and Bocce Ball weather is right around the corner and of course, the holiday season is not far off either. The pool and jacuzzies are heated so the swimming complex will continue to be a popular spot. Even though our Lifestyle Manager, Pam Lawrence, kept the community very active again this year with indoor event offerings and activities all summer long; the best of 2018 is yet to come and just ahead of us. Of course, the seasonal residents will begin to trickle back into the community soon. There will be a lot of catching up to do and fun to be had for everyone. Your Lifestyle Department is putting together another exciting, fun filled season of enjoyment and activity; so hang in there and watch the website and CB Times calendars for specific events, dates and times.

We have also implemented a new and popular game called “Cornhole” in the Social Hall during Happy Hours so that our residents and guests have another fun activity to participate in while it is hot outside. It has already become very successful and this bean bag toss game will more than likely move outside with the nicer weather and is expected to grow in popularity even more. This will continue and we can support six separate games or a total of 24 players simultaneously. This game is easy to play and you can’t get hurt so if you are looking to have some fun, come on out and see for yourself. Enjoy the rest of this summer here at Corte Bella or wherever you are. I hope everyone enjoyed the long hot summer. We look forward to seeing all of our seasonal residents when they return and hopefully we’ll be past the “Haboob” season. Thanks to our facilities staff that worked their magic to clean the pool each time the three storms hit so that normal activities could resume without closing the Michael McVeigh, CBCCA HOA Board President
pool for extra cleaning. It’s nice to know that our First Service Residential team is out at O-dark thirty before most of us are up. For what it’s worth, I met shortly after the storms with our General Manager and the Gothic manager. He related that Sun City Grand lost over 700 trees. We are very fortunate that we had few, if any, trees lost. Many residents will come back to Corte Bella to see some very successful events that were not here before they left. The first is the very popular “All you can eat” pasta and salad special paired with the Anacapa’s Wine-Down Wednesday. What a great idea! Pick a different selection of ingredients each time you go along with specialty priced and affordable wine bottles to share at the table. The other thing is the Inaugural Cornhole Open Play that will continue through the summer and into the fall as weather permits. The first night of play drew over 50 participants. This event was scheduled on a Happy Hour night so the “Regulars” had something to do while quenching their thirst.

One of my favorite people in Corte Bella has a saying that I learned before I decided to run for our board – “Some people are never happy unless they are unhappy”. We have so many volunteers working on behalf of all homeowners to make Corte Bella the very best price/value community in the valley. These volunteers are complimented by our management company and all of their employee partners on our behalf. I tend to follow the words of wisdom from others who rarely complain but rather motivate, led
by example and leave a legacy of brilliance. One of my favorites was from General Colin Powell who said: “Never receive counsel from unproductive people. Never discuss your problems with someone incapable of contributing to the solution”. He also said: “Don’t follow anyone who’s not going anywhere”. I always think of these quotes when I hear some residents complain about things when they have never actually participated in any one-on-one meetings with our management team to address their concerns. I’ve often said: “Don’t bring problems – bring solutions”. Resident concerns are most welcome and we act on them quickly. If we don’t know what’s broken, we can’t fix it.

We took a break in July but many committees continued to hold their meetings throughout the summer. We did decide to hold our regular Workshop and Board meetings in August. We are well into our 2019 budget process and looking forward to a manageable budget that will address all of the many challenges we’ll face in the next year. The 2019 Budget Presentation to the HOA Board of Directors will be presented by the Finance Committee on October 3rd. Our newest Board members are engaged with the various committees and contributing greatly to the success of our community. I hope everyone has noticed that the monthly First Friday’s with Pam gatherings have been expanded to a joint function including a mini town hall update from our General Manager. We’ve received very positive feedback on this format and the attendance at the last meeting was over 50. I’ve also received some very positive feedback from many residents on the financial information that was included in the last CB Times from our Finance Committee chairperson, Dan Kronlund. After fictional emails and other forms of communication were circulating with incorrect information, it’s important to know who has the facts. Our next scheduled meeting will be the Board Workshop on September 21nd at 9:00 am. Our next scheduled Board meeting will be on September 26th at 10:00 am. Batter for Quiche
1 cup eggs 1 cup milk 1/2 cup flour 1 tsp. Worcestershire Sauce 1 dash of Tabasco 1 tsp. salt
Quiche Assembly 1 basic pie shell, unbaked (deep dish is preferred) 1 cup ham
In a bowl, mix ½ the milk with the flour until smooth. Add the rest of the milk. Add other ingredients and strain through fine mesh strainer. Refrigerate until cold. Note: Use your choice of assorted ingredients in the filling – make it fun!

1 cup chopped spinach 1/2 cup onions, chopped 1 cup grated cheese – Cheddar or Swiss is best Mix your dry ingredients with the egg and milk batter. Pour into the pie shell. Pour in the batter until the pie tin is almost full. Bake in 300 degree oven for 30 to 40 minutes until quiche is set in center with no jiggling. (Must be firm.) Use a thermometer to check the quiche is at 180 degrees. Remove from oven and let cool slightly. Cut and serve with a salad and salsa.
Spotlight on Steve Haytasingh Barb Morin This month’s featured Anacapa employee is Steve Haytasingh. Everyone knows Steve! After all, he’s been with the restaurant since August, 2007. I asked how he was hired and he said his sister told him about an opening. His sister was bartender at the golf restaurant. Back then, the golf and Anacapa restaurants were owned and operated by Troon Golf. Anyone who attends the Anacapa restaurant knows that Steve will always greet you and do his best to ensure your experience there is a delightful and memorable one.

For years, Steve has worked as a server in the restaurant. In April of this year he started working as bartender. Despite being very challenging, he persevered and now feels comfortable in his new position. Steve’s generosity also extends beyond the Anacapa. He has served as an excellent bartender when residents have a function at their home. He also performs minimal chores for residents at their homes. I learned that his brother also works for the Anacapa. He’s not as visible as Steve because he works in the kitchen beside Chef Dan. His brother developed and evolved with culinary skills whereas Steve expanded in hospitality experience.
In closing, I admit referring to you throughout as Steve. After all, you told me that is your birth name. That was my promise to you. However, I feel a duty to share your story with everyone as to how you became known as Steven. A few days after being hired he received his name badge inscribed as Steven. Not wanting to correct the manager, Steve kept the badge and became known to everyone as Steven! Rumor has it after all these years a new badge has finally been ordered with your correct name as Steve. What an ironic “twist” of fate! That is, even with the correct name badge, you’ll still be known to all of us as Steven. Now, go out and show your worth and remain number one with all of us.!!! It’s often said, “the best and most complete satisfaction in the world is when someone else appreciates your work”. Congrats and all the best!
Steve was born in Glendale and attended Dysart High School. He’s married and has three boys. His wife, Norma, is a medical assistant at the nearby Pain Management Center in Surprise. When they’re not working, they enjoy visiting places north of here like Sedona, Oak Creek and the once veritable ghost town of Jerome. One of their ventures took place outside Arizona to the famous Griffith Park in Los Angeles. Often referred to as the Central Park of the west, it’s actually much larger, more

Additionally, there will be Grape or Wine of the Month with foods that pair well with it. Technology Committee Update Rick Furkert, Committee Chair The Technology Committee is currently a small and enthusiastic team of four people, with a need to add members. Its purpose is to pursue technology opportunities that will benefit the community. The committee’s role is primarily consulting and planning for the Board and General Manager; but collaboration, discovery, learning, and applying past experiences are the key activities. The technology opportunities at Corte Bella are abundant. The variety is especially exciting. Residents have rapidly embraced technology in recent years, as is evident in new technology additions to our facility operations. Technology Committee projects have included: •

The new Audio-Visual System was a large project. Prior to this project, community meetings were served by a portable audio system and a video projector, requiring set up for each meeting. The sound quality and coverage were poor, especially for Board meetings. The project delivered an integrated system covering events and meetings in the Social Hall and Anacapa, deploying wireless audio and video networks. Quality was greatly improved, accepting nearly any media source, and substantially reducing setup times. Webinar capability was also added allowing residents to attend Board meetings via the web. This was a fun project! Deploying a Managed IT Services Process was another significant accomplishment. Corte Bella, like many small to medium sized businesses, has grown its use of IT systems, but also struggled with the cost and resources needed to keep them current. Business disruption and unpredictable repair costs are common concerns. The desired business solution was to maintain high system productivity levels at a reasonable fixed cost. The technical solution was to employ “cloud” services to replace the expensive hardware and software functions. Both goals were achieved last year with the selection of a capable IT support supplier, with heavy attention on system monitoring, preventative maintenance, backup, and security management. This year’s focus is the Jonas software system, primarily used for the Anacapa restaurant. Credit Card security is a major concern for restaurants and retail merchants. The Technology Committee worked with Jonas, the credit card service company, our IT support, and Anacapa staff to deploy new chip card readers which were secure, fast, and avoided double entry tasks for staff. The next task was to evaluate and install the new release of the Jonas software, which was completed in July. We are currently learning and deploying the new features, making the system easier to use and providing better management reporting capability. Jonas is designed broadly for Club (HOA) services; other features will be reviewed for potential benefit at Corte Bella. The Technology Committee needs to add members. As a whole, members are inquisitive, methodical, and love to learn. You don’t need to be a technology expert to join this exciting team. If interested, please complete a Committee Interest Form.

Long-Term Planning Committee Update Dave Wright, Committee Chair The Long-Term Planning Committee (LTPC) consists of eight members (members are listed on the Corte Bella website), representing a diverse crosssection of business, planning and management experience. The composition includes a representative from each of the other executive committees as well as several at-large members and a Board Liaison, Steve Michaud. Currently, the LTPC has a vacancy for a representative from the Buildings & Grounds Committee. The LTPC meets regularly on the third Monday of each month at 3:00 PM in the Bacara Room. All residents and their guests are welcome. The LTPC is exactly what its name implies. It was the logical progression for a body to implement the goals and objectives developed by the Strategic Plan Committee that disbanded in 2014. As such, the LTPC is responsible for advising the Board on strategic and longterm planning and related activities. It is tasked with assisting the General Manager (GM) and the Board with developing and implementing a long-term plan and with providing periodic review and updating of the plan. The LTPC also works closely with the GM to foster active community participation and to seek partnerships with other community planning groups.

After two years of discussions, the LTPC is now preparing two reports; one that addresses the five mission statements and the other that addresses the longterm. Both will be presented to the General Manager (GM) for presentation to the Board at a later date. Once completed, these documents will be subject to periodic review and revision, as required.
Finally, as part of the process, the LTPC is developing a software tool to help the GM and the Board track all community projects. The tool consists of a series of spreadsheets listing each project, estimated cost, funding source, estimated time to complete, projected start and completion dates, and the priority attached to the project by the Board. These will be posted to the community website where they may easily be accessed and viewed by all community members. The LTPC solicits and welcomes input from interested residents. A portion of each meeting is set aside for community input, but residents are urged to communicate directly with any LTPC member at any time.
The committee’s goal is to provide the Board of Directors with a fiscally sound, well thought out growth and development plan for Corte Bella for the foreseeable future. Concomitantly, the LTPC was tasked with ensuring that the HOA is compliant with good business practices across the following five areas, known as mission statements:

Buildings and Grounds Committee Action in Progress Ed Venditti, Chair of the Buildings and Grounds Committee Your Buildings and Grounds Committee has had a busy year. Members Gene Stumvoll, Jim Sim, Ed Venditti, Roger Kleinschmidt, Larry Smith and Finance Committee Liaison, Ike Ikenberry have been addressing the needs of buildings, roads, utilities and recreational amenities; assisting our General Manager, Mike Arrington and Maintenance Director, Richard Lopez as well as advising the Board of Directors. Recent accomplishments include direction for maintenance repairs to the bocce ball courts, and contract review and recommendations for the addition of mechanized handicap access to the Anacapa restaurant, restrooms, and social room doors. We also provided engineering support to the Common Area Landscape Committee for one of their projects. Additionally, Gene Stumvoll, our resident expert in asphalt installation and maintenance, conducted his annual survey of our streets which will assist Mike Arrington in budgeting for and scheduling necessary street maintenance this year and next.
A special accomplishment this past spring was the formation of a Design Sub-committee. This group consists of Gayle Davis, Carol Courter, Diane DeBoer, and Lyn Linder. In the short time since its formation, this sub-committee has accomplished much. Initially they conducted a survey of our facilities, generating a wish-list of design elements in need of repairs or adjustments so as to maintain the quality of our community, its curb appeal and its original Santa Barbara style by which we all were attracted here. Among their accomplishments thus far include bid requests and contract recommendations for replacement of outdoor seat cushions and/or covers, powder coating of the older metal furniture, and the addition of strategically placed new weatherproof benches. They also provided plans for the arrangement of and additions to the outside furniture to best utilize our space and amenities around the restaurant, social halls and fitness center. Future recommendations may include interior design element upgrades. On behalf of all on the Committee members, thank you for the chance to serve Corte Bella. Corte Bella Vets Events Mark Your Calendars Karen Starkman, Secretary CB Vets Group Join us on Tuesday September 11th, Patriot Day, for our 2nd Annual “Walk around the Circle”, to remember those who lost their lives on 9/11/2001. Gather around the Flag Pole at 7:00 AM for a brief ceremony followed by the walk. Those who may prefer to drive their golf carts or ride their bicycles - you are welcome to participate. After our walk/ride, a light breakfast (cost $5 per person, only if you wish to eat breakfast) will be served in the Anacapa Breezeway. Breakfast tickets will go on sale August 1st at the Corte Bella Fitness Center. After breakfast, join the Corte Bella Vets for our monthly meeting at 9:00 AM in the Santa Barbara Room. Our last “give back” day for the year will be held at the Surprise Buffalo Wild Wings (BWW) at 13882 W. Bell Road on Thursday, October 18th from 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM. BWW will donate 10% of their total sales to the Corte Bella Vets. Saturday, October 27 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM is our dance fundraiser in the Santa Barbara Room. Come out and support our Veterans. Tickets are $15 per person and will be on sale in the Anacapa Breezeway during Happy Hour every Tuesday and Thursday, October 2nd thru October 25th. This year, we are partnering with America’s Mighty Warriors to stuff and send Christmas Stockings to our deployed Special Forces. Note that “The Adopt a Platoon Program” is not available this year due to security concerns. On Wednesday, October 24th in the Bella Stanza Room from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, plan to join us for this community-wide event. Begin gathering up toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, razor and shaving cream, baby wipes, eye drops, tooth brushes, tooth paste, dental floss, lip balm, sun block, hand sanitizer, body wash,
snacks such as jerky, trail mix, cookies and crackers, candy, hot cocoa, tea bags, tuna fish, protein bars, gum, books, puzzles, magazines, white tube socks, small sewing kits, Christmas Cards, etc. Remember that the Corte Bella Vets will be working jointly with the Sundome Plaza Merchants Association in Support of their Angel Trees for Veterans Program. Two Christmas Trees will be placed on the sidewalks in front of plaza businesses located at 13519 W. Camino Del Sol in Sun City West beginning November 1st and gifts will be collected from November 1st to December 15th.

Sun City West Resident Named Patriot of the Year Sun City West Resident, Larry Leighton, was named Military Order of the Purple Heart’s National Patriot of the Year at this year’s National Convention Banquet held in Spokane, WA on August 3rd.
As a US Army Artillery Forward Observer in Viet Nam, he was wounded during a night assault on December 12, 1970 and was awarded the Purple Heart. After more than 28 years of service, he retired as a Colonel on June 30, 1996. Patriot Leighton is actively involved in the Military Order of Purple Heart and now serves as Adjutant of the Department of Arizona and is an active member of MOPH Arizona Chapter 691. In 2017, his dedicated service to the community in which he lives and the
veterans he serves, was recognized when Patriot Leighton was named Vietnam Grand Marshal of the Phoenix, Arizona Veterans Day Parade. The organization now known as the “Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) of the U.S.A. Inc.” was formed in 1932 for the protection and mutual interest of all who have received the decoration. Chartered by the Congress, The MOPH is unique among Veteran Service Organizations in that all its members were wounded in combat. For this sacrifice, they received the Purple Heart Medal. Patriot Leighton is The American Legion, Department of Arizona, Mary Ellen Piotrowski Post 94 Commander and President of the Corte Bella Vets.

Col. Thomas H. Kirk Jr. to Speak at CB Vets Meeting Jon Wendt The Corte Bella Vets are honored to feature a real hero and former Vietnam prisoner of war, US Air Force Col. Tom Kirk, as our October Guest Speaker. Retired US Air Force Col. Tom Kirk has graciously offered to speak at our special ‘evening’ meeting on October 10th at 6:00 pm in the Anacapa Santa Barbara Room. CB Vets encourage all of Corte Bella to come and meet one of those whose sacrifice for our Country and Flag was beyond measure. He is one of many who served honorably in a war for which many of our political leaders created more obstacles than support. Born in Richmond, Virginia in 1928, Col Kirk attended Virginia Military Institute (VMI) and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant through the VMI Air Force ROTC program in 1950. He was awarded his pilot wings a year later and first flew the B-29 bomber in Georgia and Kansas. Then he jumped into fighters, the AT-6 and the F-86 Sabre’s, where he initially served in combat in the Korean War from 1952 through 1953. After Korea, he flew with fighter squadrons in Louisiana, Belgium, and Italy. He then returned state-side for assignments, to include one with the Air Force Institute of Technology at University of Southern California, where he earned an MBA. He returned
overseas in 1965, serving as the Operations Officer for the 356th Tactical Operations Squadron in Misawa, Japan. In July 1967, he took command of the 357th Tactical Fighter Squadron out of Takhli Royal Thai Air Base, Thailand. On October 28, 1967, Col. Kirk was forced to eject from his F-105 Thunderchief when it was hit by anti-aircraft fire over North Vietnam. He was immediately captured and taken as a Prisoner of War. Col. Kirk was then a guest of the Hanoi Hilton for the next 1,964 days. His cell was not far from John McCain’s. He was not released until Operation Homecoming on March 14, 1973. After hospitalization, he returned to active duty with the Air Force. He took command positions in Alabama and Colorado. His final assignment was Vice Commander of all Special Forces in Europe, and he retired on March 31, 1978. Since retirement, Tom has lived in Italy, Spain, Colorado and now Anthem, AZ! He and his lovely wife, Ann, have two sons, Thomas III and Robert. Col Kirk is an avid skier and golfer. He still golfs five days a week, and will likely challenge any of you to a round.

Three Days in Northern Arizona Dave & Linda Wright In late April, we decided to visit Antelope Slot Canyon. Our plan was to drive to Page, spend the night, do the canyon tour the next day then spend the night in Flagstaff and drive back via Sedona. The trip changed considerably when Linda broke out an Arizona Highways guide book. The drive to Page takes about five hours. A major attraction along the way is the Horseshoe Bend in the Colorado River. Shortly after Horseshoe Ben, the Vermillion Cliffs come into view to the west. These impressive formations run from southwest of Page all the way into Utah.
slot canyon, created by the natural forces of wind, rain, and floods. The walking tour through the upper canyon takes about 45 minutes and it offers many stunning rock formations. Chief Tsosie’s tours vary from $58 (early morning) to $68 (mid-morning and late afternoon) to $78 (10:00 AM – 1:00 PM). We took an 8:00 AM tour (and a couple hundred photos).
Our mid-morning start put us at the Page Marriott Courtyard around 5:00PM. We then drove directly to Big John’s Texas BBQ – THE place to eat in Page. The menu features BBQ chicken, pork, ribs, and brisket along with traditional sides and desserts. Portions are generous, so we split one. We shared a table with a young couple from Austria and another older gentleman also visiting from Austria. We drove to the Wahweap Overlook, just above the Glen Canyon Dam on Lake Powell, to see the spectacular panoramic views of the lake. We then drove to Jacob Lake for lunch at the Jacob Lake Lodge. Jacob Lake, elevation 8,000 feet, is just above the north rim of the Grand Canyon. It houses the oldest national park ranger station in the U.S. The lodge’s restaurant is famous for its cookies. Heading towards Flagstaff, we took a detour onto FR545, a 32-mile loop through the Wupatki National Monument and Sunset Crater Volcano National Park, land that was once home to a Northern Sinagua, Cohonina, Kayenta and Hohokam native Arizonans. There are two small and one large sets of ruins, which are well worth a stop. At the Sunset Crater Volcano National Park you can see some impressive lava fields.
We highly recommend Chief Tsosie Tours for your visit to Antelope Slot Canyon. Linda’s been there twice and Chief Tsosie’s is the way to go. They run covered pick-ups (10 to 12 people per truck) with very knowledgeable guides from the office to the canyon every couple hours, from as early as 6:00 AM. Antelope is a

We stopped in Tlaquepaque, just SW of Sedona for a continental breakfast at the Secret Garden restaurant. In three days, we saw some amazingly beautiful natural and man-made attractions.

The Anacapa was full with a capacity crowd for another great evening of live music and dancing plus great bistro food from Chef Dan and his crew. The Thaddeus Rose Duo had everyone on the dance floor.
Chef Dan presented wonderful recipes that cooled off the full class of participants and provided lots of great tips for entertaining in the hot weather months. A delicious cocktail was the perfect touch for this delightful event.

The group enjoyed seeing Charles Shaughnessy and Debbie Boone perform and they marveled at the dancing of Eloise Kropp and her troupe.

A wonderful afternoon of wine and paired food tasting was enjoyed by Corte Bella residents looking for knowledge about wines and what is being offered at the Anacapa on their wine list.

Cote Bella Plays Corn Hole
Tuesday and Thursday, during Happy Hour Corte Bella is playing corn hole in the Santa Barbara Room and indoor play is offering a free activity to enjoy in the comfort of air conditioning. More than 60 folks showed up at the first organized play of this fun game.

Center Court Spotlight - Don Schneider Joel Piaskowski, Corte Bella Tennis Club (CBTC) What do flying airplanes, playing basketball, baseball and tennis all have in common? These are all passions of Corte Bella resident and CBTC member, Don Schneider. Don has been an integral member of the tennis club for the past thirteen years since moving here in 2005 after living in Ogden, Utah for thirty years. After growing up in New Jersey, Don attended the University of Vermont on a baseball scholarship. The fact that Don threw a “no-hitter” his junior year in high school, helped him obtain his scholarship. He also played basketball, Don and Linda Schneider and grew up a big New York Knicks fan. Don’s reflection of growing up in New Jersey is best summarized in his following statement: “New Jersey, it’s a good place to be from.” Don’s love of flying began while serving as a seven year Vietnam combat veteran flying C-130 cargo transports. I know I speak for many of you when saying to Don, “thank you for your service.” Don then flew charter planes for Trans America. At that time, Trans America was the world’s largest charter company. In 1986, Don started with United Airlines and flew for them until his retirement in 2006. One thing Don will always remember is that he flew the United Airlines’ airplane that crashed into the North Tower on September 11th, just seven days before that historic day.
Don started playing tennis at the age of 28 while in the Air Force. He continued his love of the game while living in Utah. Don was a member of several tennis leagues and clubs, including the Ogden Athletic Club, USTA and Utah State Games. He won numerous tournaments and sectionals during this time. In 1992, Don made it to the National Finals in Tucson playing mixed doubles. Immediately after moving to Corte Bella, Don joined CBTC and has been heavily involved since. Don held the Vice President position on the CBTC Board for several years. In addition, he has been the organizer of the men’s 4.0 West Valley League group for the past five years. This league is comprised of players from Corte Bella, Surprise, Sun City Grand, Trilogy and Pebble Creek. Don met his wife, Linda, in 1979 and they married in 1981. They recently celebrated their 37th wedding anniversary! Together, Linda and Don have four children from previous marriages. They also have nine grandchildren to help keep them young. Don admits to being a “ESPN Junkie”. From baseball to golf to hockey, he watches them all. Don’s tennis idols from the past and present are Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer. That explains why Don is known as a real gentleman on the tennis courts. However, don’t let that fool you. One of the other aspects of tennis that has always attracted Don is the competitiveness of the game. “There are many similarities to tennis, baseball and basketball - the foot movements, body weight transfer and overall coordination needed to play all three sports.” stated Don. He also loves the “social aspect” of tennis. He has made many friendships over the years that will remain with him until he ever stops playing.
Corte Bella Golf Club News Debbie Parks-Dube, Membership Director The doors of the Golf Club are always open to residents who are interested in learning the game of golf. If the idea of learning to play golf is a little intimidating to you, that’s okay. We are here to help! You do not have to be a member of the Golf Club to come in for lessons. Our head professional, Adam offers lesson packages of five sessions for $250.00 or one session for $60.00. Our 1st assistant, Tyson offers lessons at five sessions for $200.00 or one for $50.00. And, we have new rental sets of clubs coming in soon, so you do not have to start out buying a set of clubs. It’s a frustrating game but it is still easy to get hooked! It just takes that one good shot in a round to keep you coming back for more. Another way to start getting involved in golf is to join the Lady Putters. This group gets together and putts on Monday mornings all year round. The ladies have a great time and can earn gift certificates for the golf grill or for merchandise in the Golf Shop. This is a great way to meet people in your neighborhood. The contact information can be found in the Club and Interest Groups in your CB Times.
Come on out and get on the course before it gets busy again. September is a great month to play, the course is in good shape and the rates are still low because the temperatures are still high. While you’re at the club, feel free to stop by the membership desk to hear about the great membership incentives we are running. As always, residents are welcome to come in for lunch every day of the week (unless we have an event) plus we are open for breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays. The golf course will be closed for over seeding October 8th through October 25th. We will still offer breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays while the course is closed but will not be open for lunch during this time. We will be redoing the fountain outside of the Golf Club sometime before over seeding. We have also been working on palm tree trimming. This year, we are doing holes 1-9 of the golf course and hole 18 . Next year, we will do holes 10-18 and continue this rotation of switching from the front nine to the back nine each year. September Pickleball Robin Mandell It’s September, and ideal weather for playing Pickleball outdoors is fast approaching. A lot of our Club members - our current total is 206 - will be returning to the Valley of the Sun soon, and once again all our courts will be full morning, noon, and night. No special events are set for September, but in October we’ll start up the winter schedule with our popular clinics, social events, tournaments, etc. Over the summer a steady group of players were out early in the morning, and again after dark. An interesting bit of news from The Pickleball Channel (to subscribe for free go to: http://www.pickleballchannel.com/ subscribe) about another nearby hot climate: Las Vegas The Plaza Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas understands the importance of Pickleball and its explosive growth. They have decided to really invest in the sport and will be putting on their first annual Las Vegas Pickleball Open Tournament from September 25-29, 2018. During their latest remodel the hotel strategically chose to put in permanent pickleball courts. Now they are adding a championship court with spectator
viewing. They are putting up $25,000 in prize money in the pro category and are investing heavily in media coverage to show just how well they understand the sport’s growth. We’ll see everyone out on the courts here in Corte Bella.
