Farm Fresh Markets The mineral rich soil of the North Okanagan-Shuswap has awarded the local growers and farmers with fresh, top quality foods of all kinds. This fertile region is home to a wide variety of farms & orchards, big and small, with family at its heart. Rogers Foods, BC’s only flour and cereal mill, began in the Spallumcheen Valley, with one farmer’s desire to grind grains for his own family, and grew into the world-renowned company that it is today. Davison Orchards in Vernon is a dedicated family operation that has been producing some of the tastiest treats around since 1933. Other small farms and orchards focus on growing a variety of produce: from every kind and colour of squash and tomatoes, to all sorts of legumes and fruit. Farmers’ markets are popping up vigorously in each community, connecting growers, crafters and their products with the local market. These markets are great fun for the whole family and well worth a visit on your next trip to the area. Usually run from about May - October, once a week, Farmers’ Markets

provide fresh food availability throughout the season. Community Gardens are sprouting up fast in the North Okanagan. Community Gardens help people access healthy food while facilitating food production skills and social connection. The Food Action Society partnered on an initiative to see more community gardens growing in the Greater Vernon area and there are now three community gardens available in the public allotment system. More community gardens are cropping up at schools and in other North Okanagan communities such as Armstrong & Lumby. The benefits enjoyed from the fresh food grown and hand-crafts made are truly outstanding. A good idea is to bring along a basket or bag to carry home all your prized treats.

Art Inspirations Inspiration can be found in a variety of ways, like nature or everyday objects. It can come from within, from a picture, from a passing conversation or anywhere really. That is the beauty of inspiration; it lies in the hands of the artist. Whether water colours, sculptures, fine art or photography is your passion, there are many art galleries, studios and workshops to be found in the North Okanagan. Art plays an important part in cultural tourism in Vernon and the North Okanagan, and there are a number of galleries, theaters and artisans that bring these displays and acts to life.

artists working in every media from painting to sculpture, video and installation art. “Where does your inspiration come from?” A question I recently posed to painter, Debby Merkel. “Inspiration comes to me from within,” replies Debby, “When I paint, I start off simply applying the medium to the canvas, and as I go, I see things within the canvas that inspires me or calls to action-- a colour or shape-- that has to be laid out and released.” Debby is a natural born artist, not one whom attended a formal arts school, but rather paints as she feels and sees. She continually attends workshops put on by other artists or galleries and learns new techniques and styles. Her favourite workshop was with a California based painter whom opened Debby to a lighter, more loose style of water media with tons of laughter thrown in for good measure; something that is reflective in her art, with bright hues and cheery tones. Beginning her studies with water colour, Debby has since developed a taste for acrylics, with their deep, vibrant colours. As her mediums changed, so did the canvas subjects. Drawn to the abstract style, Debby explains that “Every time you look at an Abstract, it changes. You change what you see, and it changes how you feel. Each time you see something different, a new sensation or thought is brought forth. I just love looking at them.”

The Caetani Cultural Center provides scheduled events throughout the year. They have five artists studios and workspace on site. And, they are surrounded by beautiful peaceful gardens that create the ideal environment to inspire artists. Nadine’s Fine Art is a business based on quality and integrity. With years of industry experience and excellence in service, Nadine’s Fine Art has a wide variety of custom framing, fine art supplies and of course, fine art. The Vernon Public Art Gallery is the centre for educational and cultural activity in the North Okanagan. They play host to exhibitions from emerging, mid-career and established 26 2013/2014

As her love of abstracts grew, so did her collection. In 2011 Debby’s piece, Breakaway, gained the attention of Kal & Maria Molnar, owners of Gallery Odin at Silver Star Mountain, and she was soon invited to participate in their gallery. Gallery Odin is a unique gallery, set in one of the most picturesque areas around. Open year round, Gallery Odin hosts 2 art shows every year in the Summer & Winter, which coincide with the Mountain’s seasonal opening dates. Having grown from a few artists to more than 30, the gallery proudly displays the original works of talented Okanagan, BC & Canadian artists from highly accomplished & renowned, to new and just emerging.

There is a wide range of talent here, featuring a variety of established artists and many up and comers in the art community that cover a wide spectrum of talent. Local galleries offer much more than a painting hanging on the wall! Many offer classes and hands on workshops to get you involved in the action, and others have gift shops, or offer framing services and art supplies. The area offers a wide variety of golf courses to choose from, whether you are looking to play a tour caliber course or smaller executive course. But regardless of what course you do choose, they will all serve up spectacular scenery for you to enjoy. Spallumcheen Golf & Country Club is the “golfing gem of the North Okanagan.” Offering two distinct challenges – a 9 hole, par 35 course, and an 18 hole, par 71 championship course, Spallumcheen’s lush green fairways can entertain golfers of any caliber.

28 2013/2014

For those wanting to test their golfing abilities and yet enjoy the pleasure of playing in a park-like setting, the Vernon Golf & Country Club is probably one of the best kept secrets in the Okanagan. The club is considered semiprivate, but visitors are always welcome to enjoy its warm hospitality. Hillview Golf offers to test your accuracy on their fast playing 18 hole course. With its eight lakes, wandering creek and several sand traps, its green fairways are sure to provide a challenge. Another course that should not be missed in Vernon is The Rise. The Fred Couples Signature course at The Rise was designed to give golfers an adventure they’ll be talking about long after the day is done. Mabel Lake Golf & Country Club is yet another Les Furber masterpiece. This 9 hole, par 36 regulation course is surrounded by majestic mountain ranges and natural forests, which line the pristine fairways.

Spallumcheen Golf & Country Club

Travel to the north for even more great new courses including Club Shuswap located in Salmon Arm. Club Shuswap boasts an immaculate 27 holes of executive golf from the rolling hills of the “Coyote Ridge” course, to the spectacular scenery of “Lakeview Greens”, the natural and man-made hazards will keep even the most seasoned golfers intrigued. Slightly further north you can find Talking Rock Golf Resort located in Chase. Talking Rock offers up a championship level course that is designed to fit any level of golfer and includes on site accommodations at the Quaaout Lodge. Located along the shores of Little Shuswap Lake, this makes it the perfect destination golf course. The lengthy Okanagan summers provide perfect golfing weather, and the season traditionally runs from March until November. The diversity of golf courses allow

you to customize your experience - from the delightful yet challenging executive courses to awe-inspiring vistas combined with world renowned championship courses. A few things to remember for your visit or golf excursion: Tee times should be booked in advance of arrival, especially during July and August. Most area courses have a dress code in effect so it’s best to check in with the facility or resort first so you know what to bring with you. Whatever your taste in golf, you’ll find it here. Many of our courses also have exceptional dining facilities. Discuss your game over a light snack or plan the next golfing adventure over a fine meal in a warm, inviting atmosphere. Even if you don’t have time for a round, the views and dining experiences are well worth the stop.

Hiking & Biking Hiking and biking areas fill Vernon & the North Okanagan with a mixture of desert grasslands, canyons, wetlands and forest trails. The Vernon area is becoming renowned as a mountain biking destination. The North Okanagan Cycling Society has developed both the Kalamalka Provincial Park and Ellison Provincial Park mountain bike trails to “Whistler Standards. The Silver Star Mountain Bike Park offers challenging routes, amazing scenery and for a small price, a ride on the chairlift to start your day. Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park boasts bright, colourful waters with sandy beaches and a 14 kilometer network of hiking and biking trails. Kekuli

34 2013/2014

Bay Provincial Park, on Kalamalka Lake, has an earthy-gravel walking path that explores the grassland hills, providing spectacular views of the valley and lake. Ellison Provincial Park is a very popular summer park located

southwest of Vernon and has six kilometers of hiking trails of varying in difficulty, both in grade and terrain, and some sections of the trail are wheelchair accessible. The BX Creek Trail in Vernon is divided into 2 portions, BX Creek Falls & BX Creek Delta, which are hiking/biking trails that follow the beautiful BX Creek. The BX Creek Falls section of the trail connects to the Grey Canal trail, just north of the Star Rd trail head. As BC’s longest irrigation channel, the Grey Canal once sustained orchards and small agricultural plots throughout the valley. The Grey Canal trail follows the old canal alignment system around Vernon, and at certain sections, the original pipelines are still visible.

Matt Butterworth, skisilverstar.com

For the more experienced hikers & bikers looking for something with more adventure and difficulty, the Okanagan High Rim Trail is definitely one to look into. In total, 55km of trails follow along the Thompson Plateau, from Vernon to Mission Creek (just east of Kelowna) and should take no longer than 3-4 days to complete. There are however, numerous access spots along the trail making shorter day hikes possible. These are just some of the more popular trails in the area and there are far more to explore in the area. With a trail for every type of hiking and biking adventurer in the area, the opportunity to explore the great outdoors and get a bit closer to nature.

Exploring

Vernon & The Valley With so much to do, you will have to schedule some downtime Vernon and the North Okanagan are teeming with agriculture, nature, outdoor adventure and fantastic people. For the winter outdoor enthusiast you can have your pick of the litter. Skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, crosscountry skiing, snowmobiling and ice fishing are all on the menu and all in less than an hours drive. And for those that long for hot summer days, this region has plenty up its sleeve to keep you entertained. Beaches, wineries, golf courses, camping and water sports, have every personality in paradise. The North Okanagan has a growing reputation for “cool climate” wineries.

These grapes ripen much slower and accumulate flavour slowly. Wines from this region tend to be more balanced and complex making them more of a “food friendly” wine. Wines that are higher in acidity and that have more complex flavours are better suited to accent flavours in food. The good news is, there is lots of wine, and lots of great places to eat! Armstrong, Enderby, Lumby and Cherryville are all relatively close communities that each have their own charm. Like much of this part of the world, lake life and summer days around bodies of water seem to be the

norm. People come from around the world to explore the bays and coves by houseboat, jet-ski, stand up paddle board and inflatable mattress. The Shuswap will give you a “big water experience while hundreds of smaller lakes will provide plenty of sun, beaches and smiles.

trails and incredible hotel with keep you entranced. Right next door are 36 of the best golf holes that the area has to offer. The Predator Course & The Ridge Course have played host to some of the worlds best and surely, some of the worst! The point is, if you love golf, you have made it to heaven.

If you are looking for a more refined experience while in the North Okanagan, a short drive south of Vernon gets you to Sparkling Hill Resort and Predator Ridge. Sparkling Hill sits perched atop a hillside overlooking Okanagan Lake with a wide-open 180 degree view of the lake below. Their spa, food, walking

Vernon & the North Okanagan, come for a weekend or come for a life time. Simply put, you will love it here. There are so many things to see and do, come and check it out, you will be blown away by what this region and these communities have to offer.

Lake Country Okanagan Jewel Cradled by mountains, lakes and dazzling scenery, Lake Country is a district made up of four communities -- Winfield, Okanagan Centre, Oyama and Carr’s Landing. All located on the land above Okanagan Lake and Wood Lake, the First Nations people called this area K’lakokum, meaning the “the land between.” Early settlers established orchards and ranches, built irrigation systems, and used the water to transport their goods. Incorporated in June 1995, Lake Country calls itself the Apple Capital of Canada, as this is where more than 35 percent of Canada’s apples are grown. In recent years, grape growing has also become an important agricultural activity and can be seen in the various award-winning wineries and vineyards in the area. Sandwiched between Wood Lake to the south and the spectacularly aqua marine coloured Kalamalka Lake to the north, Oyama, the “Jewel of the Okanagan,” is a community of more than 1,000 residents, named after a Japanese field marshal,

38 2013/2014

Prince Iwao Oyama, who fought in the Russo Japanese war of 1904-1905. Okanagan Centre, once the commercial hub of the Okanagan and a port of call for early lake ferries, wears its history proudly. The Lake Country Museum in Okanagan Centre Park displays more than 3,000 artifacts, beginning with early settlement days. Located along Okanagan Lake, Carr’s Landing offers a spectacular view of the lake and the surrounding orchards. East of Lake Country and into the cooler highlands above the valley, a string of lakes on the Beaver Lake and Dee Lake Roads have long been regarded as some of the province’s finest fishing holes. Connected by waterways and trails, this group of 2O-some lakes are stocked with Kamloops trout, renowned for their feisty spirit. Dee Lake has a boat launch while Island Lake has a recreation site, boat launch and campground. Come for the adventure and stay for the beauty, Lake Country welcomes you.

Silver Star

Mountain Resort Paradise Found As you approach Silver Star Mountain Resort, you can’t help but notice all the bright coloured buildings and residences. Most of them have crazy colour combinations that would seem weird anywhere else, but here it seems to work well. It is one of the many defining factors that sets Silver Star apart from other year round playgrounds. Whether you are looking for glades, the terrain park or to rip up the groomers Silver Star has a wide variety of options that will please those sliding down the “green run and thrill those who decide to get a little more extreme. In the past few years Silver Star has produced a ridiculous number of pro skiers that are sponsored by major companies and travelling to world filming and competing. Their freestyle programs have become a little bit of a freeride factory.

Rowan Thornton, skisilverstar.com

Like many great resorts, the to-do list goes way past skiing and snowboarding. Downhill and freeride mountain biking are super popular and all the ingredients are in place to make the experience amazing! All you need are trails, a bike park full of jumps and obstacles and a chairlift. Checklist complete! Action sports are not the only things going on here. There are several conferences and festivals that congregate on these hillsides in the summer months. So, if you are looking to send it off the big booter, slash through the deep, dry pow, take in a bag pipe convention or sip your way through a wine festival, Silver Star Mountain Resort has everything you need to make these dreams come to life. With an abundance of slope-side accommodation, you will always have somewhere comfy to lay your head. Restaurants, galleries, hiking trails and wild flowers will add to the good times.

Wine & Spirits A microclimate with long, warm sunny days, and cool nights preserve the delicate flavours that are gaining notoriety and recognition. The North Okanagan-Shuswap has some of the best scenery around and the local wineries put this to good use. Make the trek above the 50th parallel and enjoy this part of the world. Home to more than a dozen wineries from Lake Country to Salmon Arm, you will discover small boutique wineries & fully established well known labels. Rolling hills, abundant orchards and lush vineyards beckon to be explored.

46 2013/2014

Famous for sunny days and cool nights, this variance maximizes varietal characteristics and coupled with the perfect soil, makes this region a gem for producing award winning vintages. The area has an ideal natural setting for growing grapes with semi-desert like traits and picturesque backdrops. Visit the wineries, participate in a tour, taste the samples and enjoy the view and atmosphere of the vineyards. Spend

some time with the proprietors & staff to learn about the different philosophies on wine making and take on the challenge of wine pairing at your next meal or dinner party, an exciting challenge for everyone. Many of these operations are family owned and very well established. With cooler temperatures than the southern vineyards, these families and vintners have had great success with different vintages. MarĂŠchal Foch, GerwĂźrztraminer, Ortega, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Viognier & Zweigelt, are just a few types of wine that the region produces. The main advantage to growing these grapes is that they flourish in less than ideal growing conditions.

Not only are the northern reaches of the Okanagan Valley and Shuswap building momentum and gaining popularity in the ever-growing wine scene, but it is bursting onto the international spirits stage as well. A local distillery utilizes the amazing fruits of BC orchards to distill and refine their flavours & essence into some serious elixirs. So much so, that it is now recognized as a World Class Distillery as awarded by the World Spirits Organization. To add to this truly unique experience, beautifully appointed & ultra-modern tasting rooms and gift shops welcome you with open arms and invite you to sip, sample and enjoy the fruits of their labours. Cheers!

stores, both local and chain. The central area of town is the common place for large shopping centres like Village Green Centre or Piccadilly Mall—home to major retailers like Sears, Sport Chek, Winners and The Bay. No matter where you are, it will only take a few minutes to find what you are looking for. A visit to each vibrant community to shop the treasures of the North OkanaganShuswap is a great way to spend a day with friends. Don’t forget about the Farmers’ Markets-- they are chock full of goodies by locals & artisans too!

The first time we walked this steep, untouched 10-acre property we saw the great potential to create a special place. It wasn’t just the landscape’s splendor that spoke to us - it was also the soil, the climate, and the southwestern facing slope that overlooked the beautiful Lake Okanagan. That was the day that we committed to the dream of creating wines that reveal the true beauty and essence of this unique hillside we now call Ex Nihilo. 1525 Camp Rd, Lake Country Tel: (250) 766-5522 www.exnihilovineyards.com Credit Cards: VI, MC, DD Location: Map 3 - B9

Camping & RV Nothing is more relaxing than settling into camp and listening to the sounds of nature echo over the lake at the end of the day. Luckily in the North OkanaganShuswap, campsites are plentiful and there is always an abundance of stars. Many Provincial Parks in the area have designated camping areas and in most cases are attended by a Parks Facility Operator, whom can provide you with area knowledge and fire wood for your site. Aside from our provincial campground areas, one can find a multitude of private campground facilities to suit all needs; from riverside to forested, and a few lakes in between there is something for everyone. RV Travelers alike throughout Vernon

are welcomed & the North

Okanagan-Shuswap. Most provincial campgrounds have room for RV’s (just be sure to check ahead for special requirements and space) and lots of parks in the area do offer the appropriate amenities for RV travelers, including power, water & cable hookups, water and disposal outlets, and larger parking sites. Reservations are highly recommended throughout the summer months to ensure availability. Completely set in a region filled with vineyards, mountains, fields and lakes, the backdrop for a relaxing time at camp is made.
