My father, O.B.M. “G-d does not remain indebted – if you do something good, earlier or later, you will be rewarded.” My dear father, Rabbi Moshe Greenberg, who passed away in Israel just two month ago was often heard quoting this statement. When all of us managed to make it in time to stand at my father’s bedside surrounding him with love in the last hours of his life, this thought came to my mind. My father encouraged us to open Chabad centers in far flung communities where we can make a difference, giving up on the Nachat of having his kids around him, and G-d repaid him by making sure that we all were there for this important moment.

CHABAD JEWISH CENTER OF PUDONG
When we moved to Shanghai, we were prepared to accept the fact that there would be no Jewish community for our family. We were pleasantly surprised. As Reform Jews from America, we were intimidated by Chabad, but in spite of this, on one Shabbat, we decided to give it a try. We were very glad we did.
A YEAR AT CHABAD PUDONG Sheldon, Donna, Alex and Carley Gilbert

Pudong Chabad is a very special place, made so by the warm and open approach of the Rabbi and his wife. They welcome everyone warmly but neither judge nor push. They are focused on building a community that is welcoming to everyone and offers whatever Jewish experience you need. Friday night services and dinner are such a warm and inviting experience that our kids looked forward to Fridays and pleaded with us to bring them to Shabbat. Services are relaxed and meaningful followed by a wonderful dinner that often lasts several hours and is a great opportunity to meet and become friends with many other Shanghai Jews from a wide variety of backgrounds and situations. Although we were only in Shanghai for a year, Pudong Chabad made it possible for us to create a familiar Jewish experience for our family in the middle of a very foreign place. We miss Friday nights, we miss our Jewish friends at Pudong Chabad, and we are grateful to and miss the Rabbi and his wife whose warm and thoughtful approach make it all happen.

For our first JWC of the year,we had ladies attend from eight different countries, which made it really unique. All the ladies mastered the many different challa twists, including six braid loaves and napkin rings. Everyone came home with a personalized challa apron and a dose of new recipes and tips.

Havdala Ceremony and Game Night
BBQ and Honey Workshop
What a great evening! We
heard the Havdala prayer to the tunes of Nimrod's guitar, then we created beautiful braided beeswax candles and spice balls and played the night away!
Our annual Welcome Back
BBQ, was filled with fun for everyone. Children were entertained with bubble fun, a jumping castle and a Bee Keeping workshop. The children were fascinated to see a bee hive with honey filled combs, and to meet the bee keeper. Adults enjoyed socializing and meeting new and old friends.
The ceremony
Even the adults enjoyed!
Model Matzah Bakery Bakers for one day: Pudong kids turn into professional Matza bakers.
Bee Keeping is Wild!
Roll that Matzah thin!
A spread of scrumptious food
All enjoying the BBQ
Chief baker Nicolas hard at work
They began by grinding the wheat, mixing the flour and water, and then continued onto flattening the dough, and placing it in the oven. While the Matzah was baking, the children decorated special Matzah bags for their Seder table. The event concluded with a Passover shop, selling all your basic Passover needs.
Community Sukkah building A
great team of community members built the community Sukkah. The kids had the important role of covering the sukkah with the Schach (branches).

HolidaysGreat Chanukah Celebration @ Kerry Mall
Grand Purim Carnival Purim was full of great
spirit, thanks to all the original costumes and the excitement of the people wearing them!
We made history! For the
very first time, Chanukah was celebrated publically in Mainland China!
Lechaim! It's a mitzvah on Purim.
Do you recognize me? Sigal Zilber...
Throughout the event, 200 people (!) celebrated the festival full of fun and Jewish pride. We greatly appreciate all those that came forward and helped make this event a reality.
A huge hit at the carnival this year was a cool photo booth with backdrops from unique sites in Israel. A Caricaturist, a bike race, an acrobat show and live fish were also on site. No wonder everyone had an absolute ball.
Mr. Maurice Ohana Lights the 10 foot Lego Menorah, built by the kids at the mall Great acrobat show!
Mingling at the carnival
Lag B'omer Outdoors What The Jones family building a part of the Menorah
a wonderful Lag B'omer! The children had a fantastic time jumping on the moon bounce, planting, and helping to create the bonfire. A hilarious game run by Sheldon Gilbert, had everyone laughing hysterically.
Hebrew School choir singing Banu Choshech!
Chanukah @ Bursa and Bowling The Power Breakfast club
When the sun set, the kumzitz began. Sitting around the bonfire and singing together, gave all such a warm, community feeling. The children couldn’t get enough of the roasted marshmallows Yum!
