Kirshenbaum to Succeed The Games Jacobson After Games and the Ladies

by BERT LEWIS

The completion of Richard Jacobson's term as President of the JCC and the end of the Maccabi Games will occur at roughly the same time. Since President-elect Jeff Kirshenbaum has a great interest in sports as well as community related issues, everyone is confident he is exactly the right man for the job, Jeff Aizenberg, Executive Director of the Jewish Community Center, referred to Kirshenbaum as "a very impressive young man," praising him for his leadership abilities as a primary force in the planning of the Mtness Center. Aizenberg said "he was able to draw from his own experiences and contribute importantly to the project." As a result, according to Aizenberg, "we have a facility of which we're

care enough about the Maccabi Games to generously offer a great deal of time and energy toward making the summer Omaha event a huge success. They told me they've been working on this project since the summer of 2000, and can't give enough credit to both the wonderful staff help and the number of people who serve as volunteers on the more than 25 committees. "Each committee has a chair," explained Marcia. "Some have their their own committees arid some chairs are just doing their job on their own." They meet once a week, exchanging information and keeping each other up to date on current happenings. The day we spoke, Marcia told me she and the group had met with the man who is in charge of producing the opening ceremony. He is a professional, private free lancer who does this type of work, making it perfectly clear to me the people who are designing this project know exactly what they're doing. Every detail, beginning with the opening ceremony, is being meticulously planned. The women also said (with no small amount of pride), "The United Way is a Sponsoring Partner with us, providing help wherever they can, whether in ideas and suggestions or financial assistance." They are also partnering in a "Caring and Sharing Day." This was described as one day when every youngster involved in the Maccabi Games will participate in one of a large number of community service {Continued on page 10)

Here's a question to ask when starting this discussion: What would make two (otherwise sensible, intelligent and busy) women agree to accept the job described as Over-all Co-chairs for the Maccabi Games, which will be played here in Omaha this coining August? I don't know the answer to that, but I can tell you who they are: Jody Malashock and Marcia Pitlor, the ladies who were, at first, somewhat bowled over with the idea, but then grew to believe it would bea combination of lots of hard work plus an enormous amount of fun and excitement. Both have an above-average interest in sports in general, and in sports for Jewish kids in particular. Jody became involved in activities in the world of games and competitions when her (then) little boy, Ryan, developed an interest in baseball. She spent a great deal of time watching him play and, as he grew up, watching as he turned into a polished athlete. (See Ryan's story elsewhere in this issue.) Marcia, too, was influenced somewhat by her children and their partic-. ipation in sports. "My daughter, Lisa (now a senior in college) played very competitive tennis from age 10 through high school," Marcia recounted. Son David played varsity tennis in high school, and in the JCC basketball leagues, as well as in the Maccabi teams. Youngest daughter Kim is now a high school tennis player and will be participating in the games this year. For this observer, those are sufficient reasons for these two women to
