BERT’S EYE VIEW by BERT LEWIS Have you noticed how many local people are writing and publishing books lately? We have poets, biographers and even some mystery writers, all “home grown” and enjoying a measure of success. Well guess what? My room mate and I are now in a special category called “Parents Of Published Authors.” (To be scrupulously honest, we’ve been on that list since 1998 when Lisa first published.) While I recognize the fine line between kvelling and bragging, I ask you to realize when a Jewish mother talks about such things, it’s known as kvelling. I think it has something to do with genes or chromosomes or something like that. But don’t let me digress; I want to share with you this interesting tidbit from the world of books, and offspring who write them. Our daughter Shelley, who has been writing since she was a little girl, has not taken her pen in hand, but has gotten serious with her computer. Since her profession and career have always been the news business, it’s only natural that politics and political figures interest her greatly. The idea to write a book about unsavory characters actively involved in government struck her as a project worth pursuing. That explains why a colorful paperback titled Naked Republicans is now available at your favorite bookstore.

This is probably the place where I should say “the ideas expressed in this article are those of the author and not the Jewish Press,” but I’ll just remind you I’m her mother. I promise you, no matter how you vote, you’ll read and laugh and laugh and laugh. You might gasp in horror now and then, but most of what she writes in this tell-all has been in print many times already. She singles out certain congresspersons, senators and people in even higher places in government and reports on dirty tricks, illicit dealings and in general, nasty stuff that shouldn’t be connected to such figures. If you want to be a literary critic, you might be horrified to learn certain ugly facts about public servants. When such facts are reported in an entertaining fashion however, well there’s no way you can read them without being amused, shall we say. It goes without saying, each and every outrageous detail was meticulously researched and verified, so when a person is casually reading and suddenly says out loud “oh my lord I can’t believe this,” yes he can. Let me just say at this point, there’s some pretty bizarre stuff in between the covers of that book. And in addition, my kid has an amazing ability to take such stuff and turn it into a book. You want my unbiased opinion about this book? Are you kidding? Unbiased? Of course I can’t be objective. I’m her mom, for crying out loud. Just the same, I feel safe in telling you it’s a darn good read, no matter how you vote. But don’t take my word for it; get your own copy. Don’t forget the title: Naked Republicans by Shelley Lewis.
