IN THE NEWS Solomon S. Eppel, a recent graduate of Lincoln East High School, has been awarded a National Merit Scholarship. This year’s competition began in October 2004, when more than 1.3 million juniors in nearly 21,000 U.S. high schools took the preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship qualifying test. Last fall, the highest scoring participants in the state, representing less than 1% of the state’s seniors, were named semifinalists. Finally, from the pool of approximately 15,000 finalists, 2,500 Merit Scholars were chosen. All finalists are selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors and are judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college studies. His parents are Drs. Kathy and Mike Eppel. Sara Munzesheimer, daughter of Alice Weiss and Ken Munzesheimer, has been awarded the Bentson Family Scholarship for incoming freshman at the University of Minnesota. The $20,000 four year scholarship is awarded to students preferably of the Jewish faith who demonstrate outstanding academic potential and performance, leadership, creativity, community involvment and contribution to diversity. of Nebraska College of Law. She has accepted a job in Omaha with the law firm of Chavez and Associates, a firm specializing in immigration law. Nikki is the daughter of Pierre and Claire Flatowicz, and the late Roberta Flatowicz. She is the granddaughter of Hersz and Paulette Flatowicz, and the late Joe and Phyllis Frank. Dena Rennard, daughter of Dr. Stephen and Barbara Rennard, has earned a Gold Award in Girl Scouts. This is the highest award granted by the Girl Scouts and requires 40 hours of prerequistite training and an additional project completely designed by the Girl Scout of at least 60 hours of volunteer service to the community. Dena elected to design a program for students of Central High School to gain awareness of the consequences of negative choices, and she presented an assembly to her classmates on this subject. Additionally, Dena was a recipient of the Omaha Senior Rotary Scholarship and received a scholarship from the Junior League of Omaha. She was also chosen one of Ten Outstanding Young Omaha Teens by the Omaha Jaycees and Village Pointe.

He is the son of Mary Beth and Bruce Muskin. 33The Creative Arts Center, opening Saturday, July 15, 10 a.m., will be the first area finished in the $6.6 million “Building on the Best” capital campaign to renovate the permanent exhibits of the Omaha Children’s Museum. The centerpiece of the center is the Artist-inResidence Program. Throughout the year, different artists will work with children to show them how a variety of art is created. At the ‘Design It’ area, children will be able to design their own toys. It will also feature a helicopter design by Leonardo da Vinci. In the new theater, families can try on costumes, paint faces and put on an impromptu play. At the Tell-A-Story Station, kids and adults will record short videos of their experiences to share. Forty high school freshman have been selected from 23 metro high schools for the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce’s 2006-07 Youth Leadership Omaha class. In its 14th year, the program provides an opportunity for the students to explore aspects of leadership and develop capabilities that can be used to strengthen and transform the community. Among those selected are Claire Schlessinger, Millard North and Charles Parsow, Westside.
