Lessons from a pagan priest

SPARKS FROM THE WORD by RABBI MYER S. KRIPKE Parashat Yitro The innocent, and somewhat infantile, reader of the Public Pulse who says that the Ten Commandments are for everyone and for all time ought to note that there are no commandments, or at least no positive commandments in the so-called Ten Commandments. There are only, shall I say, “iterations.” And they are not for everybody. Certainly Christians need not observe the Jewish Sabbath, although they are not specifically by name excluded. Nor are the hapless denizens of Iran, and their president, the loathsome Mahmoud Ahmadinijad, explicitly warned against international battling, even though they seem to have an innate love and cherishing for it. No. The so-called Ten Commandments are for Israel and they come from Israel’s God. What might well refer to all the rest of mankind is the

group in the second half, with the “You shall not” phrase beginning each one. This is particularly difficult for the Iranians with their specific desire to murder Israelis, whom they love for this purpose. Nor is there any need for the various bellicose tribes that preceded the settlement of ancient Israelites to lay down their arms and welcome the Israelites to “their” land. The Bible carefully figures out justified reasons to displace them and kick them out in favor of Israel. If it seems that I have trivialized the events recorded in our Sidra, it is probably true. We must constantly remember that although we generally bow to the opinion that these chapters, verses and accounts were Divinely revealed, we know full well that these are all human compositions. If humans are subject to trivalities and some nonsense and some reading of history backwards, so be it. And if Yitro, this pagan priest, deserves to have the Ten Commandments in his Sidra, let that be so also. The Bible is not immune to opinions and attributions that do not necessarily make sense, make for clarity. Now we know why this Sidra carries the name of a pagan priest...pagan, even though he was father-in-law of Moses.

FRANCES GRONER Rebbetzin Frances Groner died in Jerusalem Jan. 25 at the age of 91. Burial took place at Eretz Hachayim Cemetery in Beit Shemesh, Israel. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Rabbi Benjamin Groner, who served as rabbi of Beth Israel Synagogue from 1954-64 and later as rabbi of Bnai Jacob Adas Yeshuron from 1964-66; and her daughter, Diane Groner Levine. Together with Rabbi Groner, she helped start the Friedel Jewish Academy -- then called the Omaha Jewish Academy -- get off the ground in the early 1960s. She and Rabbi Groner left Omaha in 1966 for a new pulpit in New Orleans, where they served until Rabbi Groner’s death in 1993. In January 1995, Rebbetzin Groner moved to Israel and lived there for 12 years until her death. She was honored by AMIT Women in Israel in 2000 in the largest fundraiser held up until then.
