Former Omahan Jeff Noddle was named Executive of the Year by the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal. Noddle transformed Supervalu Inc. in 2006 when he led the firm’s $17.4 billion acquisition of Boise, Idaho-based Albertsons Inc. At the time, the deal was considered the biggest leveraged-buyout ever. It vaulted Supervalu’s annual revenue from $19 billion to $44 billion and quadrupled its employee count from 50,000 to 200,000. Noddle was born in 1946 in Omaha, Neb. He’s the youngest of three sons (the late Harlan Noddle, and Allan

Noddle) of Robert and Edith. Robert was a Lithuanian immigrant and Edith’s family had emigrated from Russia. He earned a degree in business with a minor in marketing at University of Iowa. Right out of college he spent a few months in the Illinois National Guard and then worked at a Chicago glass factory. At age 24, Jeff Noddle decided to return to Hinky Dinky, where his brothers also were working. He was hired into a separate division called Supermarkets Interstate, which was about to be acquired by J.C. Penney Co. Inc. of Dallas. In 1976, Supervalu was a small, but growing, regional distributor. Noddle started his career with them in Champaign, and rose through the ranks of Supervalu’s Illinois division and then in 1985, at age 38, he was relocated to oversee the distribution business in Fargo, N.D. By 2000, he was named president and chief operating officer, and in 2001, he was picked to become CEO. By the time he moved to Supervalu’s headquarters, his brother Allan said it became clear he would become an influential leader in the company. Allan Noddle is a 30-year veteran of the food industry, as well. He is former president and CEO of Giant Food Stores in Carlisle, PA, and was an executive with Royal Ahold, a Netherlands-based food retailer. He was the first American to serve on Ahold’s corporate board. Caroline Juster, a sophomore at Westside High School, was selected to play with the 2008 Young Lions All-Star Band. The Young Lions Band performed in concert with the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra and internationally reknowned Washington D.C. trombonist, Matt Niess last week in Lincoln. Caroline also plays with the Metropolitan Area Youth Jazz Orchestra (MAYJO) and the Omaha Youth Symphony and was recently selected as principal trombone for the 2007 Nebraska All-State Orchestra.
