Mazal tov! Chaya Garfinkel, daughter of Rabbi and Mrs. Avrohom Garfinkel of Far Rockaway, married Duddy Rotenberg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kalman Rotenberg of Brooklyn, at Tiferes Mordechai.

On the evening of Wednesday, December 18, 2013, the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County was honored to welcome representatives from nine prestigious colleges and universities to its inaugural College Panel and Fair for all high school students and their parents. Organized by Ms. Karen Sheff, Director of College Guidance, and Ms. Marisa Gelb, Assistant Director of College Guidance, the event provided attendees with an insider’s look at critical information about applying to college. HANC Principal, Rabbi Shlomo Adelman, remarked, “Our inaugural College Fair was an extremely effective first step in the college process and provided necessary and valuable information to begin identifying potential college choices.” During the panel, which was moderated by Ms. Sheff, representatives from Columbia University, Hofstra University, NYU, Queens College, SUNY Albany, SUNY Binghamton, Touro’s Lander

Colleges, UMass Amherst and Yeshiva University answered questions about the selection process for admission to their institution. Panel members provided insightful information about academic and standardized test requirements, appropriate high school course loads, and which components of the application their establishment focuses on during the admission’s process. The panel also discussed Jewish life on and off campus and the variety of opportunities available to students at their university and abroad. This event culminated in three sessions in which the representatives met with students and their parents in small groups to answer questions regarding their specific college or university. Students were able to introduce themselves to the representatives, discuss their personal goals, and find out insider information about admissions. This event proved to be a huge success with over 150 people in attendance.

Learning About the 13 Colonies — Pretzel-Style! Fifth Graders at HANC’s Samuel & Elizabeth Bass Golding Elementary School are learning about and baking their way through the original thirteen colonies. Students learned that the Middle Atlantic Colonies were called the “bread basket” of the colonies because they grew most of the wheat in the area. Students also learned that although the colonists living in Pennsylvania were called “Pennsylvania Dutch,” they were actually not originally from the Netherlands, but from Germany. They were called “Pennsylvania Dutch” because they spoke “Deutsch” (German). In honor of the Pennsylvania Dutch, who introduced pretzels and mustard to the colo-

nies, the students baked their very own pretzels! It was a very yummy lesson! Thank you to Mrs. Goldberg, Mrs. Lovy and Mrs. Strauss for helping with the baking.
