Actually, all the fun originated from the Eindhoven people themselves. The drive to collectively build something has always been here. This incredible energy coming from the underground is what kept me interested. This is the reason why I have lost my heart to this city.”

Louis komt van oorsprong uit Veghel en kwam op zijn 22e in Eindhoven wonen om te gaan studeren. Na zijn studie bleef hij hier werken. Eerst als bladmanager van Soeps, toen een geliefd Eindhovens magazine. Later als creatief directeur van Plan-2 op Strijp-S. Dit was het eerste horeca concept op Strijp-S. Destijds was de transformatie van Strijp-S van verboden Philips stad naar creatieve broedplaats en woonlocatie net begonnen, nu zo’n 8 jaar geleden. Uiteindelijk is hij uitgevlogen voor een baan bij Vedett (Duvel Moortgat) in Amsterdam en later in Antwerpen. Maar bleef wel altijd met één been in Eindhoven staan. Louis grew up in Veghel and moved to Eindhoven at the age of 22 to start university education. When he finished his studies, he stayed here for work. First as a manager for ‘Soeps’, which was a popular Eindhoven magazine at the time. Later he got the job of creative director of Plan-2, the very first café-restaurant concept at Strijp-S. Back then, the transformation of the forbidden Phillips area into a creative working and living area had just begun, by now 8 years ago. Eventually, he started a new job at Vedett (Duvel Moortgat) in Amsterdam and later on in Antwerp, but he never lost contact with Eindhoven.

“We zijn nog aan het pionieren in de straat. Er gaat meer groen terug komen, met veel plantenbakken en begroeide gevels. We gaan Stratumseind terugbrengen naar het – van oorsprong - mooiste straatje van Eindhoven met de meeste monumenten. De prachtige gevels worden gerenoveerd en opnieuw aangelicht.” “We are still breaking new grounds here. We will focus on more vegetation, with lots of planters and overgrown facades. Stratumseind will be brought back to what it used to be: the most beautiful street of Eindhoven, with the most monumental buildings. The fantastic facades will be renovated and lit up again.”

Nu is Louis weer terug en heeft hij opnieuw een gebied gevonden waar hij iets kan betekenen. Dit keer het Stratumseind, de langste kroegstraat van Nederland, die nu gezien wordt als probleemgebied. Met louter horeca en gericht op de jeugd is het er overdag uitgestorven en de panden zijn deels verloederd. Louis Croonen ziet dit als een kans om op deze plek te ondernemen, om hier iets te creëren. En dus begint hij samen met Rachel Sloven juist in deze straat een bar-bistro, genaamd Calypso. Het eetcafé is in januari 2016 geopend. De brunch loopt inmiddels goed en er zijn naast vaste gerechten ook wisselende dagmenu’s variërend van burgers, pizzadag en visdag tot kleine spijzen (gerechtjes om te delen of lekker bij een drankje). Daarnaast heeft Calypso een goedbezocht borreluur, open tot sluit, wat betekent “als we klaar zijn”. Today, Louis is back again and he has found an area in which he can make a difference. This time it’s Stratumseind, the longest pub street in the Netherlands, momentarily considered as a problem area. With only cafés aiming for the young, this area is deserted during the day and its buildings are partly degenerated. To Louis Croonen this was the opportunity to start a business here and to create something new. That’s why he started a bar-bistro called ‘Calypso’ together with Rachel Stoven, which opened in January 2016. Meanwhile brunch is going well and besides a main menu you can enjoy a variety of day menus: from burgers, pizza day and fish day to small dishes, to share or enjoy while having a drink. Furthermore there is a busy cocktail hour, open till close, which means ‘when we are done’.

BIERBRIGADIER op de Bergstraat heeft passie voor bier op een leuke manier. Hij brouwt ze zelf en Bar Calypso heeft van deze brouwer de Dr. Calypso biertjes in het assortiment. SOUL KITCHEN op Strijp-S is een opleidingscentrum voor jong volwassenen, in samenwerking met Futuris Zorg Werk. Elke dag koken ze drie maaltijden: vlees, vis en vegetarisch. Het dagmenu kost € 8,50. Naast eten kun je er ook bordspellen spelen, een boek lezen uit de tradingbibliotheek, spelen op een van de gitaren of piano’s of gewoon rondhangen en nieuwe mensen ontmoeten. DRINKERS PUB op de Kerkstraat is een kroeg met heel veel verschillende soorten bier. PIT is een soep en salade bar in de Kerkstraat in het centrum van Eindhoven. Eindhoven is niet alleen een groene stad wat betreft natuur / groenvoorziening, maar ook groen wanneer het aankomt op duurzaamheid. Dit laatste woord is eigenlijk al weer achterhaald. Nu praten we over circulaire economie en deze stad kan zich een koploper noemen op dit gebied. Plug in City op Strijp-S laat het voorbeeld zien van deze nieuwe economie. Eindhoven isn’t just a green city depending on its nature or green facilities, but also when it comes down to durability. And this term itself already seems to be out-dated. Nowadays, we call it circular economy, and this city is entitled to look upon itself as a front runner in this field. At Strijp-S, Plug in City is a great example of this new economic way of life.

Tim Kouthoofd is twee jaar geleden begonnen met het opbouwen van Plug in City, Bas Luiting is een jaar later aangehaakt. Samen hebben ze het opgebouwd tot wat het nu is: een circulaire mini-stad bestaande uit hergebruikte containers. Een dynamische plek met live labs, werk en expo ruimtes voor alles op het gebied van circulaire economie. Plug in City maakt design, architectuur en technologie zichtbaar in Eindhoven. Tim Kouthoofd started building Plug in City two years ago, while Bas Luiting joined one year later. Together, they made this area to what it is today: a circular mini city of re-used transport containers. A dynamic place consisting of live labs, work and exposition areas propagating everything in the field of circular economy. Design, architecture and technology are made visible in Plug in City, Eindhoven.

Wat is dat, circulaire economie? Het is een economisch systeem bedoeld om het maximale uit de herbruikbaarheid van producten en grondstoffen te halen. Daar waar gerecyclede producten helaas toch de vuilnisbelt opgaan, worden circulaire producten opgewaardeerd, mooier gemaakt en bestemd voor een duurzaam bestaan. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan een tapijt van afgedankte visnetten of MUD Jeans ‘lease a jeans’ concept. Een spijkerbroek die je niet kóópt, maar waarvoor je een abonnement afsluit. Bas droeg deze jeans tijdens ons interview. En we moeten zeggen, deze stond hem goed! So what is it, circular economy? It is an economic system meant to make most of recycling products and raw materials. Whereas, sadly enough, recycled products are too often still dumped on our landfills, circular products are upgraded, embellished and given a new, durable life. Think, for example, of carpets made of discarded fish nets or of the MUD Jeans’ ‘Lease a jeans’ concept. These are the jeans which you do not buy, but for which you take a subscription. Bas wore these jeans during this interview and we must say, they fitted him well!

Tim Kouthoofd woont en werkt in een loft in gebouw Anton op Strijp-S. Hij is vanuit Sevenum naar de TU/e in Eindhoven gekomen om bouwkunde te studeren en is nooit meer weggegaan. “Eindhoven biedt kansen. Hier komen uit samenwerkingen de mooiste inspirerende dingen”. Tim Kouthoofd lives and works at a loft in the Anton building at Strijp-S. He moved from the village of Sevenum to Eindhoven to study engineering at the University of Technology and never left. ‘Eindhoven is a city of opportunities. Here the most beautiful and inspiring things spring from concerted actions.’ Grenzend aan het Ketelhuisplein, naast AREA51 vind je de ingang van Plug in City. Met vooraan de Snelkookpan, een productie van Van Eijk & Van der Lubbe. Deze zwarte houten container heeft vijf jaar dienst gedaan als mobiele bouwkeet voor het Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Nu is het een snelkookpan voor creatieve initiatieven.

SLAPEN IN HET WATERLAND-HUISJE / SLEEPING AT WATERLAND HOUSE Je kunt niet alleen door Plug in City wandelen, je kunt er ook slapen in het WATERLAND-HUISJE. In een klein blauw huisje op wielen vind je een Bed & Breakfast, net voorbij de ingang tegenover de Snelkookpan. Not only can you stroll around Plug in City, you can also sleep there in the WATERLAND-HUISJE. In a little, blue house on wheels you’ll find a B&B, just past the ‘Snelkookpan’ entrance. Het GLASPAVILJOEN is gebouwd door bewoners van Strijp-S en gemaakt van geleend afvalmateriaal. Bas Luiting, een Haarlemmer van oorsprong, is vanaf zijn 8e opgegroeid in Eindhoven. Woont in Oirschot, maar leeft en werkt op Strijp-S. Zijn kantoortje vind je in één van de containers op PLUG IN CITY. Hij heeft een hekel aan verspilling en heeft in zijn werk altijd gezocht naar oplossingen voor hergebruik. Dagelijks rijdt hij met zijn elektrische Twizy op en neer naar Strijp-S. Bas Luiting, originally from the city of Haarlem, grew up in Eindhoven from the age of 8. He lives in the village of Oirschot, but works at Strijp-S. His little office is situated in one of the transport containers at PLUG IN CITY. He hates waste and has always been looking for recycling solutions in his work. Every day, he commutes to Strijp-S in his electric Twizy car.

BEACHCLUB. Het zand van een expositie van MU (ook op Strijp-S) is hergebruikt als strand voor Plug in City. Geniet onder de sterrenhemel van de heerlijkheden van de biologische horeca Onder de Leidingstraat. BEACHCLUB. The sand used at an MU exposition (also at Strijp-S) was re-used to create a beach in front of Plug in City. Enjoy the delicious organic food of café-restaurant Onder de Leidingstraat in this urban setting under a star-lit sky.

66 GLASPAVILJOEN MAP P.50 The CIRCULAR BUILDING ligt tegenover het Glaspaviljoen en is een re-design van het Klokgebouw in de vorm van een living lab/ ShowCase. De onderste bouwmaterialen zijn BB Bricks, grote lego blokken gemaakt van afvalplastic. De verticale containers zijn te gebruiken als woon, werk of show units. The Circular Building is gebouwd/ontworpen door Studio Bas Luiting en Bygg Architecture. The CIRCULAR BUILDING is situated opposite the Glaspaviljoen and is a re-design of the Klokgebouw in the shape of a living lab / ShowCase. The lower construction materials are BB Bricks, large Lego blocks made of waste plastic. The vertical containers are to be used as residence, workplace or exposition units. The Circular Building is designed by Studio Bas Luiting and Bygg Architecture.

Het Van Gogh-Roosegaarde fietspad in Eindhoven is een lichtgevend fietspad, gemaakt door Heijmans en ontworpen door designer Daan Roosegaarde. Het is geïnspireerd op het schilderij ‘De Sterrennacht’ van schilder Vincent van Gogh. Duizenden lichtgevende steentjes wijzen fietsers over ruim 600 meter in het donker de weg. The Van Gogh-Roosegaarde bicycle path in Eindhoven is a luminous cycle path constructed by Heijmans and designed by Daan Roosegaarde. The track is inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s painting ‘The Starry Night’. Along a 600 metres’ track, thousands and thousands of illuminous pebbles will lead cyclists through the dark.

De Hovenring is een zwevende fietsrotonde, met kabels hangend boven een kruising van een van de verbindingswegen tussen Eindhoven en Veldhoven. Door deze bijzondere, exclusieve fietsrotonde kunnen fietsers en voetgangers ongehinderd in alle richtingen over het autoverkeer heen fietsen. The Hovenring is a floating bicycle roundabout. Connected by cables, this path hovers above an intersection of one of the main roads between Eindhoven and Veldhoven. De Slowlane wordt een 32 km lang en 4 meter breed fietspad in een bijzondere kleur asfalt. Een vrij liggend fietspad in het groen, dat voor een groot deel parallel loopt aan de A2 (fastlane). Het fietspad verbindt bedrijventerreinen en campussen, zoals het Flight Forum, de Brainport Innovatie Campus, High Tech Campus Eindhoven, ASML, TU/e en Philips. De route voert door mooie natuur zoals langs het Beatrixkanaal en de rivier De Dommel. Een deel van dit bijzondere fietspad is al geopend, de rest volgt in 2017. The Slowlane is planned to become a 32 kilometres’ and 4 metres’ wide bicycle track in an unusual asphalt colour. A bicycle path surrounded by nature which mainly, runs parallel to the A2 highway (fastlane). The cycling path connects business parks and campuses, such as Flight Forum, Brainport Innovation Campus, High Tech Campus Eindhoven, ASML, University of Technology and Philips. It’s a beautiful track through nature running along the Beatrix Canal and the river Dommel. A part of this remarkable bicycle path is already open to the public, the rest of the track will be completed by 2017.

Rondje Eindhoven voert je op de fiets langs vele mooie plekken door het groen en langs industrieel erfgoed in en rondom Eindhoven. Je kunt Rondje Eindhoven in vier richtingen beginnen en kiezen uit een lengte variërend van 20 tot 75 km. Rondje Eindhoven is verkrijgbaar en start bij Brandstore Eindhoven op het Stationsplein. Rondje Eindhoven, a cycling tour around the city of Eindhoven which takes you along many beautiful green spots as well as places of industrial heritage, in and surrounding Eindhoven. In de shop verkopen ze wielrenkleding en andere wielrenbenodigdheden. Vanuit Velosoof vertrekken er wekelijks wielerclubs voor hun vaste rondje. Vanuit deze locatie kun je meer dan 100 km rijden zonder stoplicht! En wist je dat de vergeten Eindhovense wielerheld Bert Oosterbosch hier een eigen museumpje heeft? Bicycle shop Velosoof, a bicycle café, workshop and shop all-in-one on the NRE site of creativity, situated in the centre of Eindhoven. Here, you can enjoy lunch, dinner or just have a drink. But you can also have your touring bike repaired or maintained here, or even order a new customized bike. In the shop you can buy your biking outfit and other biking accessories. Every week cycle clubs depart from Velosoof for their weekly rounds. From here you can bike as far as a hundred kilometres without even encountering one traffic-light. 4 LANDENTOERNOOI HANDBAL DAMES FOUR-COUNTRY-TOURNAMENT WOMEN’S HANDBALL

Als allerlaatste voorbereiding op de Olympische Spelen in Rio de Janeiro spelen de Oranjedames op 19, 20 en 21 juli een 4-landentoernooi in Eindhoven. De tegenstanders, Zweden, Rusland en Montenegro, zijn van wereldklasse. Het toernooi wordt gespeeld in Indoor-Sportcentrum Eindhoven waar 4.000 toeschouwers in kunnen. The four-country-tournament, which takes place on 19, 20 and 21 July, shall be their final preparation for the Olympics in Rio de Janiero. Their world class opponents will be Sweden, Russia and Montenegro. The tournament will be held at the Indoor Sports Centre Eindhoven.

HYPOTHEKER BEEKLOOP Met bijna 2000 deelnemers is de Hypotheker Beekloop, na de DLL Marathon Eindhoven, het grootste loopevenement van de regio. De loop kent veel Eindhovense en regionale deelnemers en vindt twee keer per jaar plaats. Met veel bezoekers en muziek langs de groene route over het terrein van GGzE locatie de Grote Beek, is het een gezellig loopevenement. De tweede editie van de Hypotheker Beekloop vindt dit najaar plaats op 7 september 2016. The ‘Hypotheker Beekloop’ is the second largest running event in the region with nearly 2,000 participating runners. This event has many Eindhoven and regional contestants and takes place twice a year. This fun, running event attracts many visitors along its green route across the GGzE area ‘De Grote Beek’. This year, the second edition of the ‘Hypotheker Beekloop’ will be organised in the fall, on September 7th 2016.

Het Nederlands dameshandbalteam heeft zich via het Olympisch Kwalificatie Toernooi in maart in Metz overtuigend geplaatst voor de Olympische Spelen. Deze zijn van 5 t/m 21 augustus in Rio de Janeiro. Het is de eerste keer in de geschiedenis dat een Nederlands handbalteam mee doet aan de Olympische Spelen. In March, during the Olympic Qualification Tournament in Metz, the Dutch women’s handball team has qualified itself for the Olympics. The Olympics take place from August 5th until August 21st in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. It’s the first time in history that a Dutch handball team participates in the Olympics.

WK LIFESAVING 2016 Lifesaving swimming is een spectaculaire sport die is afgeleid van het echte reddingswerk. De onderdelen bevatten combinaties van techniek, tactiek, kracht en snelheid. De sport bestaat uit wedstrijdonderdelen in het zwembad, de ‘Pool Events’, en op het strand en in de zee, de ‘Ocean Events’. Van 1 tot en met 18 september vinden in het Eindhovense Pieter van den Hoogenband zwemstadion en in Noordwijk aan het strand de Wereldkampioenschappen Lifesaving Swimming plaats. Er staan zeven verschillende toernooien op het programma voor landenteams, clubteams en masters. Lifesaving swimming is a spectacular sport that is derived from real rescue work. Its elements contain combinations of technique, tactics, strength and speed. The sport consists of a contest in the pool, the so-called ‘Pool events’, on the beach and in the sea, the so-called ‘Ocean events’. From September 1st until September 18th, the World Championship Lifesaving Swimming shall take place at the Eindhoven Pieter van den Hoogenband Swimming Stadium and on the beach in Noordwijk. Seven different tournaments are scheduled for country teams, club teams and masters.

DLL MARATHON EINDHOVEN Op zondag 9 oktober vindt de 33e editie van de DLL Marathon Eindhoven plaats. Ook dit jaar wordt het weer een fantastisch volksfeest. Vorig jaar stond een recordaantal van ruim 24.000 deelnemers aan de start van dit mooie sportevenement. De lopers worden enthousiast aangemoedigd door de 200.000 toeschouwers langs de verschillende parcoursen. Bij de DLL Marathon Eindhoven kun deelnemers de volgende afstanden afleggen: • • • • •

NIEUWSJAARSLOOP Eind december gaat de 11e editie van de Genneper Parken Nieuwjaarsloop van start. Deelnemers kunnen kiezen uit verschillende afstanden die zij kunnen lopen. Runners can choose a variety of tracks. This variety of distances turns this events into an ideal running track for amateur and professional runners. The entire registration fee is always destined for charity. During its previous edition, an amazing € 10,000 was raised for the Genneper Parken Bulls.

SENET DIVING CUP Senet Diving Cup, voorheen bekend als Eindhoven Diving Cup, is het grootste Internationale schoonspringevenement van Europa. Jaarlijks vindt dit evenement plaats in het eerste weekend van februari. Met inmiddels 250 deelnemers uit 20 verschillende landen en meer dan 600 starts in het Pieter van den Hoogenband zwemstadion behoort dit evenement tot een geschikt kwalificatiemoment voor verschillende EK, WK, EJK en WJK wedstrijden. Senet Diving Cup, formerly known as Eindhoven Diving Cup, is the largest international Diving event of Europe. This event takes place on an annual basis in the first weekend of February. With over 250 contestants from 20 different countries and more than 600 starts at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swimming Stadium, this event can be considered as a perfect qualifying round for many competitions.

SWIM CUP Vele nationale en internationale toppers uit de zwemwereld maken in april 2017 hun opwachting in Eindhoven tijdens de Swim Cup. In het Pieter van den Hoogenband zwemstadion worden tijdens dit evenement elk jaar weer records verbroken. De concurrentie onder de zwemmers is groot, dit maakt het des te spannender voor de toeschouwers op de tribune. Many national and international top swimmers will make an appearance at the Swim Cup in April 2017 in Eindhoven. Each year during this event at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swimming Stadium, records are broken. There’s a huge competition between the swimmers. This makes it even more exciting to watch.
