A NOTE FROM JESS I’m a geologist who studies volcanoes, which makes me a unique candidate for Congress. But in these unusual times, we need new kinds of leaders to solve our problems.

I’ve seen the value of stepping up my whole life. Both of my parents were FBI agents for over 20 years. When you have people like that as your role models, loyalty, bravery, and integrity become your way of life.

Until now, my way of serving has been through working to understand our planet and how we can live with it, including the dangerous parts like volcanoes and earthquakes. I give back by helping educate the next generation of scientists: young women and men from all backgrounds who will be the innovators, educators, and conservationists of the future.

I was moved to step out of my work boots and into the race for Congress because people like Donald Trump and Steve Knight are threatening that future by destroying some of the most basic things we all agree are important.

Education, scientific research, disaster preparedness, critical infrastructure, national parks, and wildlife are all under assault.

Our economy thrives when we invest in our people and our planet. Trump and Knight both deny the science of climate change, which impacts our economy, health and way of life. Their attacks on immigrant families, women’s rights and health care coverage are offensive and damaging to the most vulnerable people in our society.

Trump and Knight are failing to deal with important issues like cybersecurity, senior care, and disability justice that will only become more important in the years ahead.

I’m working to win the job of representing the people I care about and the places I love, because everyone should have a bright today and a brilliant tomorrow.

WHY JESS WINS Favorable District. Hillary Clinton beat Donald Trump in CA-25 by 6.7%. In fact, there are 24,246 more active Democratic voters in the district than active Republican voters. Additionally, there is a 7% gender gap among all active voters, inherently benefiting a strong, female candidate like Jess.

National Target. CA-25 is viewed as one of

the best Congressional pick-up opportunities for Democrats in 2018. The Cook Report calls this seat a “Toss Up” — one of six in the nation and one of only two in California. EMILY’s List, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and 314 Action are targeting this highly-competitive seat.

Out-of-Touch Incumbent. Steve Knight has

a record in Congress that is far too extreme for the moderate voters of CA-25. He’s on the record saying California’s efforts to curtail global warming are “rash,” and he’s consistently taken votes that are disastrous for the local environment, while accepting thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from the fossil fuel and oil and natural gas industries.

Potential Fundraising Advantage.Incumbent Steve Knight has a history of lackluster fundraising.

He reported just over $200,000 cash on hand at the end of 2017’s first quarter. This clear weakness provides an opportunity for a viable candidate like Jess, especially given her profile as a noted volcanologist and celebrity scientist.

Right Candidate at the Right Time. Voters are

tired of traditional politicians. Jess is a fresh face with a distinctly interesting appeal. The current environment is ripe for outsider candidates, especially those facing longtime career politicians.

ABOUT JESS Jess Phoenix’s professional life spans science, education, and industry with a focus on understanding, protecting, and communicating the importance of our natural environment.

She earned a B.A. in History from Smith College and an M.S. in Geology from California State University, Los Angeles. Jess has conducted extensive research all over the world, including Hawai`i, South America, Asia, Australia, Mexico and throughout the continental United States. She has worked with the U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Queensland University of Technology, and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

Jess brings her expertise in lava flows and natural hazards to work in risk assessment and disaster preparedness. She has transferred her knowledge of how volcanoes affect human populations and the environment to the public through her work with the Discovery Channel. Jess has also worked on numerous expeditions focused on climate change research funded by National Geographic and the National Science Foundation.

With her husband Carlos, Jess founded Blueprint Earth to preserve Earth’s environments through scientific research and education. Their work mapping the ecosystem of the Mojave Desert was featured in Popular Science magazine and on National Public Radio.

Prior to founding Blueprint Earth, Jess worked around the world for Dassault Systèmes helping natural resources companies use 3D modeling technology to make mining more efficient and environmentally sustainable. Jess has volunteered and worked professionally in animal rescue efforts, especially with companion animals and former racehorses. NPR Station KPCC reported on the wildlife rescue operation Jess participated in during the 2016 Sand Fire evacuation efforts in Los Angeles County.

Jess’ unique profile as a congressional candidate has inspired tremendous interest and support locally and across the country. Her campaign has already been profiled in the Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, and Gizmodo.
