FRAGRANCE LAB

By fostering an understanding and appreciation of the symbiotic relationship between fragrance and music, the lab not only entertains but educates and inspires. User will explore how fragrance compositions can be likened to musical compositions, with different notes blending harmoniously or clashing in a symphony of scents.

The vast expanse of southwest texas, with its open skies, landscapes, and rich cultural influences, serves as a unique backdrop for a sensory exploration lab. Notes & notions is a fragrance lab to unravel the intricate connections between fragrance and music, and how they individually and collectively evoke emotions and memories.

VISUALIZING SCENT THROUGH ATMOSPHERIC QUALITIES

1. In relation to site, The Band “Balmorhea” blends jazz, folk, americana, and classical music to reflect Texas’ vast landscapes and cultural influences.

2. Jazz, folk, americana, and classical music were then broken down in to four separate categories.

3. Each music genre was then visualized through atmospheric representations.

4. The atmospheric visuals were paired with scent connotations.

5. Lastly, by categorizing scent notes into group in which best described their attributes, materials were chose in relation to those similarly described.

BRIGHT, BALANCED, UPLIFTING

The top notes of “Texas Harmony” translate into a bright, balanced, and uplifting interior that echoes the fragrance’s lively spirit. This initial olfactory impression is mirrored in a space that is vibrant, welcoming, and invigorating, setting the tone for an energizing and harmonious experience.

hamonious, romantic, warm, sultry

Together, these middle notes create a harmonious blend that is both luxurious and approachable, rich and comforting. It’s an ode to the diverse landscapes of Texas – from its elegant, blooming fields to its deep, mysterious woods – and a celebration of its varied musical genres, from the refined notes of classical the vibrant rhythms of jazz.

grounding, deep, melodic, rhythmatic

Together, these base notes form the soul of “Texas Harmony.” They are the lingering memory of the fragrance, the notes that stay with you long after the initial melody has faded. Like the enduring impression left by a beautifully crafted symphony, these base notes leave a sense of warmth and depth that is both luxurious and grounding. In “Texas Harmony,” the base is not just a conclusion; it’s a rich, harmonious continuation of the story.

THE BANNED BAR + LOUNGE

The concept for TheBannedderives from Boston’s History of censorship in the early 20th century known as “Banned in Boston,” initiated by the Watch and Ward Society. The group attempted to ban any media, like literature, gambling, and music, they deemed as immoral for society. Inspiration for materials and spatial programing derived from the banned media.

1910’S HISTORY OF “BANNED IN BOSTON”

THE WATCH AND WARD SOCIETY HEADQUARTERS: 41 Mt. Vernon Street in Beacon Hill was the headquarters of the Society for several decades, and many key decisions were made by Chase and Cabot here about which books, musical performances, and theatrical works might be most deserving of the organizations’ close attention.

THE BOSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY: At the height of the society’s power in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Boston Public Library kept books that had been deemed objectionable in a locked room, publishers and booksellers held back publications for fear of the organization’s influence with prosecutors and judges, and plays were performed in a bowdlerized “Boston Version”

THE OLD CORNER BOOK STORE: An early test site for the power of the watch and ward society. Many clerks and customers would be caught and fined for buying and selling “banned” literature.

THE HOWARD ATHENEAEUM: An entertainment theatre consisting of jazz bands that sung about drinking and love, burlesque shows, and comedy. In 1930’s, the society declared its obscenity and had the place raided and suspended their license for 30 days for offensive entertainment.

OLE CASINO SPEAKEASY: A site where, mostly men, came to gamble in silence. There was everything from chess, poker, cards, and a lot of money passed around. This location was unnamed, but a member of the watch and ward society overheard of the location site and reported it during a meeting, eventually having the place raided by the police.

19

The spatial layout reflects how Boston’s city is made up of dense buildings that carve out unseen alleyways. In this space, the “internal streetscape” leads the occupants to the bar, lounges, and dining areas.

Using gambling speakeasies, library rooms, and jazz clubs as an inspiration of materials and design, the furniture and lighting of The Banned use large-scale furniture with heavy material to evoke privacy as well as domesticity.

“INTERNAL ALLEYWAY” CEILING MAP DESIGN

The “internal street-scape” is shadowed by a CNC wood ceiling. The ceiling design was created from a 1920’s map from the Boston Police Department that showed the routes to areas that were prohibited to the public. The ceiling also acts as a wayfinder from one private lounge area to another.

1/2” = 1’ 0”

The ceiling is fractioned into 25 separate pieces. This way, the supports of the CNC design will not interfere with the shadows from the LED lights above.

CUSTOM LIBRARY BAR

The Library Bar design draws inspiration from a library bookshelf. Unlike most bars, the shelved are perpendicular from the wall, so that the bottles of liquor are hidden.

CUSTOM WALL SCONCE

The custom wall scone was designed to be a hand moving a Queen chess piece that provides consistency within the shadow-filled hallways as an ADA tactic. The sconce is placed throughout the hallways to lead the occupants to and from the restrooms.

CORE GYM

The Core gym was an exercise exploration of the tensions and opportunities in combining two different programs and users in one space. Program is defined by three-dimensional volumetric space of paint. As the programs of the building are separated, the circulation outlined by colored paint forces the gym members and art gallery viewers to experience juxtaposed confrontation.

JUXTAPOSING VISITORS

Using paint as the only material of the space, three-dimensional volumetric paint color informs program. In doing this, the existing concrete structure is carved out, revealing its core.

The space planning of this project was inspired by the idea that the gallery and the gym convey this relationship of business partners in that they have their own separate areas, but their clients are confronted in the common spaces. This was executed by having the same entrances, reception, vertical circulation, and bathroom areas for all users.

BACK STRETCHER

The idea behind the Back Stretcher was to design and build an exercise device that when not in use, the device acts as a sculptural art object. Using plywood as the main and only building material, object’s function but imbue the device with aesthetic character.

FUNCTION VS. AESTHETIC

The spine stretcher inspiration came from the already existing back-stretching yoga device. The concept derived from the ribbed form of the human rib cage that lies parallel to the device.

The process started by sketching and 3D modeling in Rhino7 to understand dimensions due to the top piece having a specific curve. The curve’s peak resided one-third of the length from the top. Ultimately, the peak meets the user’s upper back.

FORTLANDIA

In an ongoing partnership with the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, The Trail Conservancy hosts one temporary sculptural art installation on the Trail as part of Fortlandia. Fortlandia is a collection of forts designed by architects, designers, and artists, designed to connect people of all ages to the environment by evoking a sense of childhood play and wonder.

Monkey Bar Fort is a temporary pavilion that plays off the classic playground staple: monkey bars. This fort is meant to be engaged by the body- climbing, swinging, and circulating through a canopy of wood. A series of changing shadows created throughout the day offer interesting visual patterns and shady respite from the sun. As a hybrid architectural and play structure pavilion, monkey bar fort allows park visitors to exercise, relax, and snag a little bit of shade.
