introduction

Willakuy is a catalogue of multimedia stories directed to children and young adults. The project was named after the Quechua word willakuy, which means ‘story’. But it could also be káso, epew, diidxa hrui’cabe’, tsikbal, aknutmaqn, pakiwaitara, hadithi, ibali, indaba, nyaya, pale, itan, akuko, labari. At the core of all these words is the wonderful human capacity for fabulation, the ability to see and experience the world through stories. Storytelling is a universal manifestation that transcends the boundaries of time and space. It is also what unites all the works included in this catalogue, no matter the media: books, films, songs, plays, oral tales - all of which work as vehicles for narratives that reflect the worldview of different indigenous nations, their cosmovision. Once gathered, these stories reaffirm the contemporaneity of indigenous cultures, which are often regarded as belonging to the past. Similarly, they bring visibility to current conflicts rooted in colonialism and present postcolonial practices such as state oppression, police violence or extractivism.

Pero también puede ser káso, epew, diidxa hrui’cabe’, tsikbal, aknutmaqn, angka, pakiwaitara, hadithi, ibali, indaba, nyaya, pale, itan, akuko, labari. En el centro de todas estas palabras está la maravillosa capacidad humana de la fabulación, la habilidad para ver y experimentar el mundo a través de relatos. Contar historias es una manifestación universal que trasciende los límites del tiempo y el espacio. Es además lo que une a todas las obras incluidas en este catálogo, sin importar el medio: libros, películas, canciones, obras de teatro, narrativa oral; todas las que sirven como vehículos que reflejan el punto de vista de diferentes naciones indígenas, su cosmovisión. Los cuentos aquí reunidos reafirman la contemporaneidad de las culturas indígenas, que son a menudo consideradas como pertenecientes al pasado. Similarmente, estas entregan visibilidad a conflictos cuya raíz yace en el colonialismo y en las presentes prácticas postcoloniales tales como la opresión estatal o el extractivismo.

Willakuy é um catálogo de histórias multimídias dirigidas a crianças e jovens. O projeto recebe seu nome da palavra quéchua willakuy, que significa “conto”. Mas também poderia ser káso, epew, diidxa hrui’cabe’, tsikbal, aknutmaqn, angka, pakiwaitara, hadithi, ibali, indaba, nyaya, pale, itan, akuko, labari. No cerne de todas essas palavras está a maravilhosa capacidade humana de fabulação, a habilidade de ver e experienciar o mundo por meio de narrativas.

Contar histórias é uma manifestação

universal que transcende as fronteiras de tempo e espaço. É também o que une as obras incluídas neste catálogo, não importa a mídia: livros, filmes, canções, peças de teatro, contos orais - todos funcionam como veículos para narrativas que refletem a visão de mundo de diferentes nações indígenas, sua cosmovisão. Uma vez reunidas, essas histórias reafirmam a contemporaneidade das culturas indígenas, muitas vezes tidas como pertencentes ao passado. Da mesma forma, dão visibilidade aos conflitos atuais enraizados no colonialismo e em práticas pós-coloniais, como a opressão do Estado, a violência policial ou o extrativismo.


Rationale

The curation Willakuy: Indigenous Stories, Contemporary Cosmovisions brings together an array of texts about and/or by indigenous cultures from across the globe. The project aims to serve as a mindful resource for families, educators, librarians, editors, and other industry professionals, in order to discuss indigenous cultures with youths. Indeed, we believe that facilitating authentic engagement with this topic is crucial within the 21st century, as many nations continue to undermine and torment indigenous communities through political violence, police brutality, and state oppression. While in some parts of the world these atrocities are everyday occurrences, in other parts they go unnoticed; both of this needs to change. Within the realms of children’s texts, education, librarianship and family practices, teaching children and adolescents about indigenous cultures is a vital entry point into changing conceptions of indigenous peoples and the struggles they face today. Our selection of texts seeks to facilitate this discussion. We have chosen to present our curation in the form of a catalogue that can be used in many contexts, from schools, libraries, and cultural organisations, to private homes and family settings. Notably, our catalogue is by no means a definitive list. We recognise that there are many texts from around the world that may well warrant inclusion. This curation is but a starting point, and the idea is to keep it going and growing as an open list: our audience is invited to add to it. Three main criteria guided our text selection process. Firstly, we sought out texts that offer a high degree of authenticity by reflecting, as closely as possible, the lived experiences of indigenous peoples. Texts created by cultural outsiders without sufficient insider knowledge run the risk of being superficial, stereotypical, anecdotal or tokenistic; these are precisely the texts we have chosen to avoid in our catalogue. Thus, our chosen works are either authored by members of indigenous communities, or by cultural outsiders working in close collaboration with indigenous communities. Nevertheless, critical engagement with the text is required

of the mediator and reader, regardless of the authorship, in order to promote children’s development as knowledgeable and empowered social agents within the world. Thus, we have deliberately sought out texts that offer opportunities for thorough engagement with indigenous lived experiences and cosmovisions. Secondly, the curation casts a deeper look at what it means to identify as indigenous within the contemporary day and age. While the selection includes both new stories and retellings of old tales, each text is produced, and thus (re)interpreted, within the 21st century. For centuries, indigenous cultures and lands were colonised, and as a result this topic is often classified as a thing of the past, confined to history. However, colonisation remains alive and ripe today – in fact, it is stoked – when indigenous stories and visions are silenced. As long as indigenous voices are ignored, their colonisation is still happening: it is not a thing of the past. Not only are indigenous voices important for the sharing and preservation of identity, culture and language, as their knowledge has tremendous value for the present. The current environmental crisis is but one example. Indigenous cosmovisions offer different perspectives and alternative ways of relating to the world, and we need to heed them in the present in order to create a decolonised future. The third criteria running through our curation is the inclusion of a diversity of children’s media: we deliberately sought out works beyond the bindings of books. The term ‘text’ used throughout is thus defined openly as a story that is recorded or can be reproduced in a coherent and relatively consistent way, including but not limited to theatre plays, songs, films, digital apps, oral storytelling and different literary genres. Diversity in media addresses issues of accessibility and cultural expression, as not every culture is steeped in a literary tradition, nor does every child prefer to read or indeed have access to books. While some children have libraries and modern technology at their disposal, others rely on resourceful and immediate forms of storytelling such as plays,

songs and oral tales. Furthermore, children also occupy different media and use them in different ways. In many parts of the world, increased media literacy is a requirement for keeping up with the 21st century. In this way, indigenous communities – as well as children – have agency in using different media at their disposal to tell their stories. Finally, we would like to acknowledge that our curation is not untainted by ideology. As subjects steeped in our own cultural contexts, we cannot pretend to be wholly objective. While we do not identify as indigenous, we hail from countries with rich indigenous cultures and peoples. In this sense, we share some of the nationalities, but not the cultures or ethnicities, as some of the indigenous cultures presented in this text curation. Like a bridge between two worlds, we are positioned as insider-outsiders within our contexts. We have witnessed the oppression, suffering, and silencing of indigenous communities in our countries, and we will not allow their erasure. This is our call: to elevate their stories and amplify their voices through this curation. Thus, we have chosen to use our skills and expertise as children’s literature students, analysts, educators, and editors in support of indigenous voices and stories. In this way, we believe that our subjective contexts and curation’s delimitations allow us to be as sensitive as we can to the world’s contemporary multiliteracy. Selecting the texts required us to make choices. Yet while we recognise that our choices speak, the voices they speak in are indigenous.

The song represents the spirit of the indigenous woman in the mountains of the north-east of Argentina. This character is a shepherd, a weaver, and a salt worker, among others, as she works hard to raise her child. While working, she sings coplas to help her endure the cold and the injustices to her ethnicity. This song could resonate with children first through the music, and then through the creative use of woolen materials. synopsis Doña Ubenza es un hermoso videoclip de una canción interpretada por Mariana Carrizo, famosa cantante versada en la fusión de diferentes géneros como el jazz y la música folclórica andina. La canción representa el espíritu de la mujer indígena en las montañas del noreste de Argentina. Este personaje es una pastora, una tejedora y una trabajadora de la sal, entre otros oficios, mientras trabaja duro para criar a su hijo. Mientras se ocupa, canta coplas para ayudarse a soportar el frío y las injusticias hacia su etnia. synopsis The book tells the story of two children and their pet turtle, who live in the Jari region – a small channel that connects the Amazon River to the Tapajós River in the state of Pará. Even the school follows the logic of the river, interrupting classes during the rainy season. synopsis Produced in partnership with the NGO Vídeo nas Aldeias [Video in the Villages], the collection offers an authentic and contemporary take on various indigenous peoples by enabling them to tell their own stories. Each book is bilingual and comes with the film that inspired it, made by or in collaboration with indigenous filmmakers. The aim is to demystify some preconceived images that we have of indigenous peoples, and to show children that these are not only in books. With each title, the reader gets to know a little more about the current and ancient customs of indigenous peoples throughout Brazil: Wajãpi, Ikpeng, Panará, Ashaninka, Mbya-Guarani and Kisêdjê. about The curators

We are Camila (Chile), Jéssica (Brazil), Katja (South Africa) and Loreto (Chile), four students with a passion for children’s literature and indigenous cultures. The pursuit of an international master’s degree in Children’s Literature, Media and Culture (CLMC) has brought us together in Europe and the UK. Each of us comes from a different academic and professional background, ranging from early childhood education and school teaching, to publishing and journalism. We are proud to present our text curation Willakuy: Indigenous Stories, Contemporary Cosmovisions as our product for the course “Children’s Literature for a Diverse World”, which critically engages with notions of diversity across texts for children. Despite none of us hailing from an indigenous culture, we have chosen to thematise indigenous storytelling because we believe that it is a crucial part of our world’s diverse traditions. Furthermore, each of our home countries has a devastating history of colonisation, genocide and oppression, the effects of which are still felt today – and will continue to be felt if we ignore and silence the targeted groups: indigenous peoples. This curation is our sincere effort to honour the richly diverse indigenous nations of the Earth.
