material boxes gather materials from the site of the shrine project build a sample of their intended use inside a 12 in x 12 in x 6 in box materials chosen include bamboo, limestone, rammed earth
shrine design a place for reflection that responds to the chosen site. make use of materials found in the chosen area. this shrine includes four stages which act as places for reflection, point out a certain view or guide the visitors journey.
step one is a gateway made of bamboo in the same fashion as seen in the material box. from this point the visitor is able to see their journey and look upon the most distinctive feature of the site.

front view
side view
the second feature in the reflective process is a window made of rammed earth through which the viewer can see the hill and the most calming area of the creek bed below. the earth used in this project includes topsoil from the surrounding fields, a caliche mix from the creek bed and lime.
top view
front view
side view
stage three is a procession of columns increasing in height. the columns, made of rammed earth have a void space on top where vegetation could be planted. the columns are designed to mimic the structure of the hill and act as a guide for the visitor’s path to the final point of reflection.
top view
front view
side view
the final place for reflection is a bridge spanning half the width of the creek bed. at this point the visitor is able to gaze upon the hill, down the creek on either side or down into the swirling water and trickling springs. the bridge has glulam beams for structure and wood planks in between. the planks are positioned for climbing the bridge and flatten on top.

built shrine build a 1/4 scale model using the techniques and materials explored while building the material boxes this design features two poured earth columns which frame a gabion wall with a cross-shaped void the shrine’s east-west orientation celebrates the setting and rising of the sun with a cast shadow at each occasion
cana gardens design a retreat facility that can be built of natural materials and has the option of functioning off the grid incorporate strategies that reduce energy consumption, such as rainwater harvesting, grey water system, wetland facility, cross ventilation, thermal mass walls, wood stove, and solar ovens make use of as many on site or site surrounding materials for building applications such as rammed earth, bamboo, prickly pear stucco, limestone and caliche incorporate the large space provided by the site to spread out program functions design spaces for public use and assembly and spaces for private use and small gatherings
