LETTER from your

h i s to r i a n

the theme expl ained The theme of this year’s scrapbook is A Year in the JCL: An Epic Journey.

Dear MassJCL, It has been an incredible year. We’ve travelled to Alabama, competed at Kickoff, learned new things at Classics Day, and shared yet another State Convention. The purpose of a scrapbook like this—to me at least—is to allow you all to remember the new friendships, experiences, and memories you have made over the past year in this organization. One year ago, I was elected your historian, and it has been my pleasure to get the chance to encapsulate the history and memories of the MassJCL. In part due to your bright smiles and adventurous attitudes, I’ve been fortunate enough to genuinely love what I do, whether that be taking photos, designing your state banner, or making this scrapbook. I implore you to reflect on your experiences over this past year, the people you’ve grown close to, and perhaps even the classics. The time we share together is priceless, and I encourage all of you to make the most out of whatever time you have left in the JCL and beyond. If you take only one thing away from this scrapbook, know that history serves a purpose. E Corde, Jesse Hogan, MassJCL Historian ‘17-‘18

The national quote this year reads, “Ego vos hortari tantum possum ut amicitiam omnibus rebus humanis anteponatis,” meaning “I urge you, as much as I am able, to place friendship before all human issues.” In epics like Homer’s Odyssey and Iliad or Virgil’s Aeneid, characters face a variety of obstacles/issues. In numerous cases, they rely on the help of others—those who lend out friendship—to overcome them. The JCL, in many ways, parallels to this. This scrapbook is structured chronologically like these great works of literature. Enjoy! 5

Friendship—in the Trojan War? War is often considered the opposite of friendship. However, in Homer’s Iliad, friendship is still a deciding factor in character actions. When Diomedes and Glaukos meet in battle, an Achaian and a Trojan respectively on opposite sides of the war, they exchange armor instead of killing one another—simply because their ancestors were bound by the idea of xenia, or guest-friendship (hospitality). In the case of Achilles, despite his rage against Agamemnon, he joins battle on the Greek side due to his incredibly strong friendship with Patroklos. Similarly, some MassJCLers likely found their beginnings in this organization through familial or friendly relationships! 8

the start to an odyssey; a new massjcl year. In The Odyssey and The Aenied, following the Trojan War came the start of seafaring journies. However, sailors soon faced obstacles that needed to be overcome in order to reach their ultimate destiny. In the case of The Odyssey, Odysseus is soon faced with Polyphemus the Cyclops and Circe, and for The Aeneid, Aeneas is soon faced with Carthage and the death of Anchises, his father. For the MassJCL, the beginning of our journey was also plagued with struggles. Kickoff, an event characterized by catapults and ballistae, was moved to a new location, and as a result, the catapult and ballista contests (save the marshmellow launchers) were called off! However, despite the changes, the power of friendship and group effort allowed the event to sail on smoothly!

et monere et moneri proprium est verae amicitiae

a trip to the underworld Thank You In The Odyssey and The Aenied, numerous obstacles eventually landed Odysseus and Aeneas in the Underworld. Both characters eventually hear from those closest to them and take something out of their journey there—for Odysseus this came through discussions with fallen friends ParTiCiPaTing and relatives that remind him of the value of life, and forsChools Aeneas, he is reminded of Dido’s fall and is also directed by his father towards his future. For the MassJCL, Classics Day acts as our form of classical reminder and direction. Through attending workshops led by University professors, we learn new things and are reminded of our classical roots. To Ms. Meghan Kelly, Administrator of the Classical Studies Department at Boston University, for her constant assistance; Professor Stephen Scully of the Classical Studies Department at Boston University, for his support of the MassJCL and Classics Day; all of the presenters, for contributing their knowledge to the MassJCL; and finally, to Boston University, for hosting this event. carina records topics of questions encounters with sirens In the Odyssey, Odysseus encounters sirens that attract his crew. To avoid the temptation himself, he ties himself to the mast of his boat. For the MassJCL, certamen competitions like Harvard tempt players of the glory that comes with victory. However, with competitions like Nationals around the corner, it’s important for these smarties to keep on preparing and studying for the new year of competition, and hopefully eventually take the national title!

all good things come to an end The end of the MassJCL year marks State Convention, coming together for one final event. In the Odyssey and Aeneid, the main characters each find their destiny. In the case of Odysseus, this is returning home, and for the JCL, our State Convention acts as that! For Aeneas, he eventually lands in Latium to found Rome, and for us JCLers, State Convention crafts a whole new bunch of memories that will stay with us forever.
