Hip Hop Museum Undergraduate Architecture Studio Associate Professor Chris Cornelius

Project: Students derived architectural forms from the interpretation of hip hop music from the genre’s “Golden Era” (1980’s-1990’s). Using filters and diagrammatic analysis, analyzed forms were transposed into site strategies and spacial layout.

Material and methodology exploration through material property study and creation of methodologies for applications. Material and / or methodology must incorporate environmentally friendly benefits.

Wax was chosen as a material investigation for its ability to solidify , melt and re solidify without any degradation of material. Wax experiments led to the replicated ability of forming concrete blocks and being re used on new blocks. Concrete blocks could be used in modules but be entirely unique to any other block through the process derived.

Exploration of further project detail. In this case, the Minnesota Olympic Velodrome from a prior studio. Material and structural detail were developed n combination of overall design intent. The MN Olympic Velodrome would provide Minneapolis with a central bike venue in one of the most bike friendly cities, nationwide.

(right) Process sketches Process elevations, parti diagrams, circulation diagrams, and proposed green roof forms sketches were used in combination with study models and digital development.

A 38’ wide, pair of glass sliding doors were developed to open the Velodrome to the Greenway bike trail and downtown Minneapolis. This creates a connection through the building to the Greenway and heart of the Twin Cities.
