The Wilder Side... The 70 miles of footpaths managed and maintained by the Countryside Management Team are part of an Island-wide network. These include the stunning north coast cliff paths, as well as inland paths which allow access to some of the Island’s most beautiful areas. Footpath features include bridges, steps, fences, stiles and boardwalks which are built and then maintained to allow the public easy access to enjoy the countryside of Jersey.

7 Le Noir Pré Orchid Field Le Chemin de L’Ouziere, St Ouen’s Bay (off La Grande Route des Mielles) Flowering season: May - June Often known simply as ‘the Orchid Field’, this unique site is one of the last remaining strongholds of the Jersey or Loose-flowered Orchid (Anacamptis laxiflora), which also occurs in Guernsey, but is absent from the rest of the British Isles. The wet meadows here also contain a wide variety of other rare plant species, including the Southern Marsh (Dactylorhiza praetermissa),

As part of their work, ‘Sites of Special Interest’ are managed to protect species, habitats and historic monuments. Interpretation panels are also maintained to provide guidance and information. Common Spotted and Heath Spotted Orchids (Dactylorhiza maculata). During May and June, the two meadows are a riot of colour, with the stunning deep purple of the Jersey Orchids contrasting with the various shades of pink, through to white, of the remaining species. 8 The Forgotten Forest The Val de la Mare Arboretum Val de la Mare Reservoir, St Peter The Val De La Mare Arboretum is a project which local tree charity Jersey Trees for Life undertook as part of its 75th anniversary celebrations in 2012. With more than 1,500 hours spent on works last year and interpretation signage being introduced to enhance the learning experience for visitors, the arboretum was originally created in 1975 by the Moores family in the memory of their son Nigel.

Jersey’s Victorian Central Market Sheltered beneath a high-domed roof, the market’s splendidly exuberant fountain is always surrounded with a stunning array of over-flowing flower stalls whose fragrance floats on the air. Adding to this riot of colour are the fruit and vegetable stalls, brimming with local and imported produce. Around the perimeter you will find meat and dairy produce, wines and chocolate, spices and cakes - as well as other unusual goods - all combining to create a unique shopping experience. You can buy exotic ingredients: freshly grown herbs, a pot of Jersey honey, or a bulb of the exotic Amaryllis Belladonna - brought from its native South Africa to Jersey where it flourishes as the ‘Jersey’ lily.

3 ‘St Ouen’s Manor’, La Grande Route de St Ouen, St Ouen - Sunday 24th May The Manor, standing as one of Jersey’s oldest, has been the ancestral home of the de Carteret family since the 11th century. St Ouen’s Manor is a very special place to spend some time, and today you can enjoy the rare opportunity to explore the stunning grounds with its ancient Colombier (traditional dove cote) and walled garden. 4 ‘The Grove’, Le Mont Cambrai, St Lawrence - Sunday 21st June The Grove is an exceptional and imposing mansion standing in a beautiful elevated position with spectacular views across its formal gardens to St Aubin and Les Minquiers Reef. The gardens are the most stunning feature of this magnificent

property. Pathways and terraces lead to Mediterranean, Magnolia, Chinese and Japanese Water Gardens. With mature parkland trees, banks of rhododendrons and subtle planting, this is a truly memorable garden to view. 5 ‘Villa Devereux’, La Route Orange, St Brelade - Sunday 5th July This four-acre garden, with a wonderful view over St Brelade’s Bay, consists mainly of undulating lawns interspersed with specimen trees such as Hornbeam, Metasequoia, Cherries, Ginko and Magnolias. A large tree sculpture is a remnant from the Great Storm of ‘87, whilst other sculptures have been created by Walenty Pytel, John Skelton and George Kowzan. To either side of the house are Japanese style gardens featuring

Acers and Azaleas – look out for a “Deer Scarer” over a water trough. There are also many other interesting plants to be seen including many varieties of Camellias and Heathers. 6 St John’s Manor, Le Neuf Chemin, St John - Sunday 23rd August This imposing manor, with its own consecrated chapel, stands in 10 acres of carefully tended gardens, 40 acres of farmland and surrounding woodlands. The present owner has carried out extensive landscaping to best show the main features: the lake, the Japanese garden, the stream and the beautiful walkways.
