News In Brief 1 in 10 Jersey jobs are zero hour

One in 10 jobs in Jersey are zero hour contracts, according to the latest labour market survey. Produced by the States of Jersey statistics unit, the study found the total employment was at a record high. There are 59,080 jobs in the island, although this includes people working more than one job so does not reflect the number employed.

Company shuts leading to 28 job losses 28 jobs have been lost at shop-fitting firm which ceased trading due to the death of its owner. Premier Contracting and Shop-fitting had been trading in Jersey for the past 23 years. In March, director Richard Brocken, who had been involved in the business since 1992, died suddenly, and his family decided to cease trading. All 28 staff would be offered professional redundancy support, the firm said. The Five Oaks company had been involved in a range of projects across the island for the past two decades.

Boat Park

A second attempt to get permission for a boat storage facility in a field in St Martin has been turned down. The applicants wanted to change the use of a field to a boat park in undeveloped Green Zone land at L’Abri Farm, with access off La Grande Route de Faldouet. In its report the department said the application was similar to one turned down in December 2014 and while it recognised a need for additional boat parking facilities, particularly in the east of the Island for the winter months, the scheme would spoil open and undeveloped countryside on a Green Zone site.

Glasshouses The owners of a field in St Saviour who asked the committee to reconsider their refusal for an application to demolish a number of glasshouses and build five new homes were turned down. Under existing Green Zone policy, agricultural buildings have to stay in use for employment where possible. Owners are expected to advertise to attract new tenants. The department’s report said that although the owners had advertised the glasshouses for rental, they hadn’t fully explored if the site could be used by other businesses.

New Rules To Protect Horses To protect animal welfare and animal owners, only qualified equine dental technicians will be able to carry out certain treatments. It’s widely recognised that horses benefit from dental care. New advice and guidance from UK and European veterinary dental organisations recommends a clear distinction between procedures that can be carried out by non-professional technicians and those that must be done by suitably trained and accredited equine dental technicians. States Vet Linda Lowseck said that when it comes into force next year, the change to the law will provide more safeguards for horses while enabling suitably trained and qualified individuals to practise in Jersey.

That Time Again... Well summer seems like a distant memory! Christmas will soon be with us again - it seems to come around quicker each year! Although I don’t mind as it means it’s time for mince pies and time to put the tree up - we all love getting into the Christmas spirit!

Tesco Wins For Me I just wanted to share these pictures I took in Tesco’s to show off their gluten free range. I think other supermarkets should take a leaf out of Tesco’s book and extend their gluten free options.

Not So Sweet When you walk into a shop and see signs, tags and labels saying ‘Special Offer’ or ‘Deal’ you would expect the item to actually be a special one off/daily/weekly discounted price. To see Checkers Xpress advertising an Aero for £1.05 as a “Special Price Pack” is a little misleading as this is the cost in every shop anyway!

“It Might Be Quite Loud...” When my already very noisy neighbour knocked on my door to warn me he was having friends around “because it was his birthday” I started to worry. He’s never once given us any form of warning, so this could be a problem. After hours of “waiting for the party to start” we realised that was it. The music was manageable, we could hear the T.V and it was already midnight! There’s an anti-climax for you!

You’ve been open now for a year this month, how have you found running your own business and is it how you expected? I have found it very challenging, but then again I love challenges as that’s my nature. It wasn’t how I expected, it demands a lot of concentration and I have had to learn a lot since we opened. I can’t take my eye of the ball for one minute, constantly keeping my eye on every detail, it’s quite overwhelming but I’m now getting used to it. What made you decide to open Linen Hut? When I first came to Jersey I spent a lot of time in the catering business, I did many different jobs, for example, I worked as a cook and as a waitress until my son was born. Then I started looking for a role with hours more suited to being a mother, this is when I started at Lancashire Textiles and I worked there for twenty five years until last year. I simply love interacting and socialising with customers and with the experience I gained from Lancashire Textiles I decided it was time to be my own boss and run the daily show how I wanted to.

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING Autumn has arrived! Well, the clocks have been turned back and Autumn really is here. We are all reaching for the warmer, cosier items in the wardrobe but oh dear, some of them are definitely looking past their best and need replacing! It never fails to amaze how early the Fashion Seasons start, and the Autumn collections were in the shops as early as August. When we called into Up and Above we could see the latest “top up” collections had arrived and just as well as many ranges have sold out, yet some of us have hardly thought about our winter wardrobe! There is still a good choice thanks to the new arrivals and we especially loved the party wear, lots of lace, chiffon and body contouring dresses.

Food & Entertainment

Out With The New, In With The Old Pinball has made a welcome return to the Island thanks to the owner of Tiki Hut. Pinball machines have been absent from the Island’s pubs and bars for many years now but they have found a new lease of life. Pinball took a hit when the newer, advanced technology (video games) came out, but there has been a recent growth in the popularity. Like anything, pinball is coming back into fashion and is being considered retro and cool.

We caught up with Luis from Casa Mia restaurant on Kensington Place to find out a little more about the renowned Italian restaurant and the man behind it. Hi Luis, how long have you been in the hospitality industry? Well I arrived in Jersey in 1979 and started work as a waiter at the Hotel de France. In ’85 I took a role as a barman in the Revere Hotel and I became the Hotel Manager a few years later in 1994. When did you take over Casa Mia? I bought the business in 2002 and have been here since. You’re in a great location for tourists, have you noticed a change in the number of tourists you have through your doors compared to when you first took over? The last three years have been difficult but I’m a survivor! I believe Jersey is a great place for a holiday, it’s a beautiful island. The states need to do more to bring tourists back since it’s dropped over the years. There are too many hotels closing down, it’s crazy. Kensington Place is a fantastic road for a restaurant, one of the best on the island. I think they should pedestrianise the road with all the cafes, restaurants and hotels in the area. The road is already popular, but if they had it pedestrianised we could all offer al fresco dining and it would be really good for tourism.

I am actually putting a plan together at the moment to make Kensington Place a pedestrian road, even if it was just between 11am and 3pm and then again after 5pm. They should lighten the road up more as it’s so dark and put in new paving and it would be really nice. All the local residents seem to think it’s a great idea so hopefully the plan will go through. It sounds like there are exciting times ahead for Kensington Place! Before we leave you let’s tell the readers what the most popular dish is on the menu… It’s the Linguine Lobster for sure, and that is also my favourite. And do you have a message for islanders who haven’t paid a visit to Casa Mia restaurant? Yes, they should definitely give it a try, we’re serving up fresh Italian and Mediterranean cuisine that’s both innovative and traditional, making Casa Mia a favourite place for locals and tourists to meet and eat. Luis will be launching a petition soon for the road to be pedestrianised so please keep an eye out!

Ephemera- Extraordinary Insights Into The Past By Stephen Cohu

What is ephemera and why is it valuable?

In collecting terms ephemera covers items that were designed for a single use and then disposal, they were designed to have a life of a single day. Such items include postcards, letters, pamphlets, newspapers, packaging, posters, programs for theatre, sports events and anything else designed with a brief life. The value is not just financial but also historical and can provide valuable insight into the lives of people temps passé. Every day interesting and irreplaceable items are thrown away in house clearances, particularly of elderly deceased relatives who may have occupied a property which has not been touched for generations. Some people save extraordinary things for years, often forgotten in attics, drawers and cupboards.

numbers. Good condition is also vital. Common views, for example Needle Rock in Plemont Bay or Corbiere Lighthouse of which there are hundreds of different examples that are all the same may be worth a pound or two. Certain series of cards are highly sort after, for example numbered cards suffixed with the letters LL. Collectors like to make up the whole set and certain numbers for more obscure scenes are very difficult to find and are consequently expensive, some being worth £100 plus. A common postcard can have its value enhanced by what is on the back, for example unusual postmarks from post offices such as First Tower or St Aubin, or from the boats that ran between Jersey and France. The stamps on the cards will almost always be very common 1/2d stamps, worth nothing in their own right.

Early 20th century postcard of Beresford Street

1916, with the Allied Generals and leaders on the front, for Beghin’s Shoes. Condition was extraordinary being near mint and it was quickly snapped up by a collector.

Red Cross Letters or Internee Mail

19th century photograph of a proud Jersey farmer

Early Photography

Many people of non-Jersey origin evacuated from the Jersey in the weeks leading up to occupation in July 1940. Of those that remained many were sent to Germany and other European countries under Nazi control as they were from enemy countries, primarily Great Britain, to internment camps such as Biberach. The messages on these letters provide a fascinating insight into what life was like in the camps. These letters are highly collectable with both commercial and more importantly historical value. Once the generation that received these letters die out, few people know what they are or their significance and sadly many are simply thrown out when properties are cleared.

By the 1860’s, photography was available to the masses and many photographic studios were established in Jersey. Scenes of everyday life were recorded, working in the fields, outings by carriage, photographs were taken of buildings long since lost or countryside areas now covered by development. These photographs are often Programmes, Brochures and the only record of the way things were and Calendars as such are of immense historical value and Many businesses sent calendars for the potentially high monetary value. All 19th coming year to their customers, often quite large contemporary prints, with a calendar century photographs are collectable. and almanac at the bottom. Very few survive as they were mostly thrown away at the end Postcards By the early 20th century postcards were of the year. They are often very decorative extremely popular and covered all manner and desirable today as part of an interior of scenes and subjects. Rarity is the primary design. Condition is key as they were printed value pointer, for example real photographic to use and often became rather tatty by the postcards of obscure or unusual scenes that end of the year. Recently I discovered a wall may only have been printed in very small pocket with a calendar on the reverse for

A rare event programme from 1921

Programmes for events, exhibitions, conferences also turn up but again were mostly thrown away immediately after. For many of these the only record of the event will perhaps be only one flyer or bill. Again monetary value may be fairly small but historical value is immense.

forever through being thrown out without due consideration of their significance. A good early postcard album may be worth many hundreds of pounds as indeed may old photographs, almanacs, calendars, paperwork. As the generations that carefully saved these items die out, they are wantonly destroyed. What better way to preserve these items from our history than by becoming a collector, you don’t need a large house or large pocket and you may soon become addicted to tracking down rare items! If you find old ephemera in a property, don’t just throw it away, get some advice as it may be worth a small fortune!

Old Invoices

Invoices from the past provide a fascinating insight into what people were buying a hundred or more years ago and what these items cost. Uniforms for the Jersey Militia, animal feed, general groceries, building work to name but a few. The Jersey Archive is always interested in recording the information on these invoices, thus saving them for future generations.

Saving the past for the future

Review of Island's Cyber Security The Government of Jersey is developing a cyber security strategy based on the findings of a number of internal audits and an independent review conducted by intelligence sector experts. Internationally, the frequency and complexity of cyber-attacks is increasing and it is therefore ever more important to ensure that information security is considered a priority by governments, businesses and individuals. The Government aims to work in partnership with the critical national infrastructure, the Jersey Financial Services Commission and the private sector to encourage and incentivise improved cyber security across the Island. The recommendations made in the Comptroller and Auditor General’s report on information security will also be implemented as part of the forthcoming strategy. There will be a public statement in 2016 regarding the Government’s proposed strategy.

Trackers launch digital apprenticeship A new pilot to train islanders for the digital sector is being launched by Trackers Apprentice Programme. Five applicants will initially be taken on to work and train in all areas of the digital industry. E-learning will be used to tailor the training to each apprentice and employer. The apprenticeship will last a minimum of 12 months but is flexible and allows employers to suggest other professional qualifications for their apprentice. The programme is designed for people already working in the digital sector and covers specialisms ranging from service desks to fintech, app development to digital security and any other relevant area. Applications can be submitted from 1 November to 15 November. Application forms are available through Digital Jersey.

Geoff Pike, PMI Specialist at Lumiere Wealth, is well placed to assist both corporates and private individuals in getting the best out of their private health insurance. Geoff began his career in 1997 as a PMI Provider at Western Provident Association based in Taunton, Somerset, where he quickly rose to the position of National Director and where, between 2006 and 2012, he managed the entire UK sales force. In 2012, Geoff and his wife relocated to Jersey. Geoff had begun to investigate the PMI history and needs of the island and, realising that only 40% of the population had PMI, Geoff joined Orbital Financial Advisers as a PMI broker in 2013. More recently, Geoff was introduced to Chris Byrne who had established his own private Wealth Management company, Lumiere Wealth. With both parties immediately recognising the mutual benefit of joining forces, Geoff came on board as Lumiere Wealth’s dedicated PMI specialist. Geoff has continued with his research into the Jersey PMI marketplace and has discovered that there are an alarming number of policy holders, both personal and corporate, paying a far greater premium than necessary,

With the ever increasing pressure on employers to provide the most competitive packages to attract and retain staff and today’s demands on both the NHS and the States of Jersey Health Service, there has never been a greater demand for Private Medical Insurance (PMI).

due to out of date policies that have not been reviewed for some time. By way of example, whilst quitting smoking is a very current topic, a surprising number of policy holders have not had their policy adjusted to reflect the fact that they had in fact quit the habit several years ago. Many of these clients have their own dedicated broker, yet Geoff has frequently come across those who are paying up to £6,000 per annum for a policy that ought to cost just £2,000 based on their current state of health and lifestyle choices. Lumiere Wealth undertakes a comprehensive, annual review on behalf of each of its clients to align them with the best policy to suit their needs, ensuring that they pay minimal costs for maximum benefit. Lumiere Wealth has a suite of 9 different PMI products that it is able to offer its clients. Being in a position to review the whole PMI market, they can offer the best cover for private specialist and consultant referrals and dental, optical and GP fees, for both corporate and individual schemes. For corporate PMI clients with ongoing claims, changing provider can be a very sensitive process. If there are savings to be made or improved terms on offer, Geoff will manage this process seamlessly and sympathetically, at no detriment to the policy holder. Lumiere Wealth consistently strives to seek the optimum solution for its clients and Geoff ’s 17 years of PMI experience, personable manner and traditional yet flexible approach has assisted in elevating Lumiere Wealth to the top

The Importance of Networking by Claire Boscq-Scott #TheBQB

“ the outcome of networking Referrals, “

Credibility is the quality of being reliable, worthy of confidence. I remember when I first launched my Speed Buzzing events, someone contacted me and asked if they could see the list of attendees before they booked their place. After a few minutes I received an email from that person saying she wasn’t going to book, as the people on the list were not the right people for her. I was quite shocked with her response, who are the right people? How does she know the attendees wouldn’t want her services or know someone in their network who may want her services? Moreover, how does she know her services are what people want if no one knows what she does?

into a new medium, and the idea of “word of mouse” began. Thanks to the instantaneous nature of electronic communications, an opinion can spread online rapidly, and numerous forums have enabled the transmission of ideas in an increasing number of ways. Word of mouse can be passed along from person-to-person in the form of email, but it can also manifest in a number of other locations. Just like word of mouth, word of mouse is built on a solid reputation, and it must be carefully maintained.

Networking is all around you, all day long, from dropping the children at school and talking to someone at the gate, to attending a business or work event. I was at a wedding a couple of weeks ago and I was talking to a young man who was very interested in Mystery Shopping. I gave him my card (always take business cards with you, everywhere you go) and a couple of days ago he signed up and is now working for me.

I refer to networking expert, Dr Ivan Misner: “A referral marketing plan involves relationships of many different kinds. Among the most important are those with your referral sources, with prospects these referral sources bring you and with customers you recruit from the prospects. These relationships don’t just spring up full-grown; they must be nurtured. As they grow, fed by mutual trust and shared benefits, they evolve through three phases: visibility, credibility and profitability. We call this evolution the VCP Process(R).”

The more you talk to people, the more you build a relationship with them and the chance that person will make reference to you in a conversation increases. Word of mouth is the most powerful and cost effective marketing tool at your disposal. Referral relationship marketing is key to the success of business. In the rise of the electronic era, the concept of word of mouth began to be translated

The first phase of growing a relationship is visibility: the visibility phase is important because it creates recognition and awareness. The greater your visibility, the more widely known you will be, the more information you will obtain about others, the more opportunities you will be exposed to, and the greater your chances of being accepted by other individuals or groups as someone

to whom they can or should refer business. Visibility must be actively maintained and developed; without it, you cannot move on to the next level, credibility. Credibility is the quality of being reliable, worthy of confidence. Once you and your new acquaintance begin to form expectations of each other - and the expectations are fulfilled your relationship can enter the credibility stage. Credibility grows when appointments are kept, promises are acted upon, facts are verified and services are rendered. To determine how credible you are, people often turn to third

How To Get Headhunted

Nothing quite beats the feeling of being wanted. We all experience want and/ or need in a different way. In the workplace, it is often underrated and equally, is the area where most employees feel the least satisfaction.

So when a call comes in from a headhunter, it’s a wonderful feeling to know that you are not only recognised for your talent and hard work, but equally, wanted and valued. Opportunities presented by head-hunters represent the elite, these positions do not make mainstream media and are assigned to the head-hunter by the client. This is important, the head-hunter works for the client, in fact, all recruiters do, whether niche or high-street, it is the client that pays the fees and it is the head-hunter’s job to source the candidate. There is a very clear distinction between a recruiter that is ‘head-hunting’ and a professional head-hunter who is recruiting and it is easy to tell the difference. The headhunter will have very strong connections to the client, will meet you in person – always, and will want to know as much about you as they tell you about the position. Those that get head-hunted are in an enviable position, some roles can be tailormade to attract a specific candidate and even if they’re not, often come with perks, incentives and a big splash of recognition. Some candidates spend their whole careers being head-hunted and do so because it offers executive career management and a hassle-free transition into one of the elite positions managed by the head-hunter, alongside the opportunity to work for a company that valued you before they even met you.

But how exactly do you get ‘head-hunted’? If you’ve ever received a call from a professional head-hunter, you are likely to have asked the same question everyone else does, ‘where did you get my name?’ or ‘who recommended me?’ and it is equally likely you didn’t get an answer. A professional head-hunter never reveals their sources and uses a variety of different methods to source, track and engage candidates. So how exactly can you get head-hunted without knowing the insiders source?

LinkedIn, however, is a whole different ball game and is used by employers, headhunters and recruiters everywhere. The more detail you have on your profile the better. Remember, it is your online CV so make it good and use it to update your network of your achievements. Finally, add a picture, but only to your LinkedIn profile, put one on your paper CV and it is likely to go in the rejection pile.

Finally remember your contact details, the easier it is for a head-hunter to get in touch the better for you, try adding a few personal Network, Network, Network If you don’t already, then get networking contacts to the work one’s so you can avoid and hand your business cards out freely, the embarrassing head-hunt call whilst at you never know when you might get your desk with your boss peering over you. something back from it. Head-hunters can be found at almost any industry event. It Be Helpful is a great way to build contacts on mutual This might sound like a strange one, but if ground, though it is unlikely you will I head-hunt someone who, for whatever know from the outset that the person you reason is not the right fit for that role, it are talking to is a head-hunter, so engage could be location, terms or salary, but they in conversation and look out for the tell- take the time to give me a few names of tale signs, head-hunters will structure people who could be a good fit, I am far the conversation dynamic around 80/20, more likely to have that person at the top absorbing all the information you are giving of my list the next time round. I will go the extra mile to help them with their career them to use at a later date. goals. Those kinds of relationships work both ways and are hugely valuable to headBe Social And by this I mean LinkedIn, not Facebook, hunters, we will bend over backwards to unless it is a Facebook designed for work, in retain and foster them. which case it won’t hurt as more and more recruiters and head-hunters are turning Lastly… to the power of Facebook. Make sure your Remember the trick to getting head-hunted profile is one you are happy to share with is not to scream from the rooftops that your the world. I’ve said it before, if your profile open to opportunities, but to make your image is you smashed on a Saturday night, footprint, digital or otherwise, easy to it’s unlikely you’ll get that call. Finally, professional and clean, better yet, have two it does not escape my attention accounts and keep one completely private that by doing all of the above, you may be opening yourself for friends and family only.

up to a world of unsolicited e-mails and calls so remember the cardinal rules. A good head-hunter will not just ping you a Job Description by e-mail and ask if you’re interested, they will work up to the role and focus on building a relationship with you first. They will insist on meeting you in person, will want to know everything about you, your career, your ‘have to haves’ and your ‘nice to haves’ and what you are missing in your current role, if anything. So feel free to discard any ‘marketing spiel’ e-mails that drop into your inbox and focus on the ones that start with a coffee invitation, not a job offer.
