At the beginning of the 20th century, Lorillard was incorporated into the American Tobacco Company but maintained semi-autonomous operations. In 1911, the company built a new factory in Jersey City's Marion section, with enough space to accommodate a four to five-thousand-person workforce. This expansion occurred even after the company had purchased the remaining portion of Provost St. from the Merchant's Refrigeration Company and opened a bakery in the center of the complex.
