INTRODUCTION
On 20 November 1989 the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child came into force throughout the world. This historic international law brought about a fundamentally new way of thinking about children. Never again could children be seen merely as the property of adults, as human beings “in waiting.” They became rights holders and citizens, ushering in a new global era of care, attention and support. China ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1992, and has worked steadily to ensure the protection of all children’s rights. The lives of China’s children have changed immeasurably. After 25 years we invite you to take part in a visual exploration of the moments of children’s lives across China, through the lens of UNICEF’s country programme and beyond.

SURVIVAL
The first and most basic right of every child is to be born; to thrive and grow up in a safe, caring and healthy environment. Particularly in the early years, even a momentary lapse in optimal care and nurturing can lead to deficits that can never be made up.

As the culture of child rights becomes ever more deeply engrained in modern Chinese society opportunities for them to fully engage in civic and cultural life must be provided.

ABOUT UNICEF IN CHINA
UNICEF first assisted China between 1947 and 1951, providing emergency services, food and nutrition, health and hygiene training during and after the Civil War. In 1979 UNICEF officially commenced its cooperation with the Government of China to support child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS. UNICEF is on the ground in over 190 countries and territories to help children survive and thrive, from early childhood through adolescence. This photo essay has been commissioned to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
