Media Information

the george m. billingsley tennis center The George M. Billingsley Tennis Center has been the outdoor home of Razorback tennis since its renovation in 2008. The $2.8 million expansion and renovation gives the Razorback men’s and women’s tennis teams a complete facility combining the outdoor courts of the Billingsley Center with the indoor courts of the Dills Indoor Stadium. The outdoor facility includes bleacher seating between the two sets of five courts. Fans can sit in the bleachers and watch matches on either side, or stand on top and view matches on both sides. The renovation includes locker rooms, offices and an indoor club area attached to the Dills Indoor Stadium and connecting the indoor facility with the outdoor facility. The club area includes chair back seats on one side overlooking the Dills Indoor Courts and chair back seats on the other overlooking the Billingsley Center outdoor courts. Other additions include scoreboards for the individual courts and a larger scoreboard on the west end of the north set of outdoor courts which will display the scores from outdoor courts one through six. Unlike many other programs across the country, Arkansas’ tennis teams take advantage of facilities which give them the opportunity to play and practice 365 days a year, regardless of the weather.

The Dills indoor tennis courts

The Razorbacks have a proud tradition of providing the best athletic facilities the world can offer, and the Dills Indoor Tennis Courts is no exception. Constructed in 1982, the structure was originally known as the University of Arkansas Track and Tennis Complex. In 2002, the facility was renamed the Dills Indoor Tennis Center and dedicated solely to the netted sport, offering the latest to competitive collegiate tennis student-athletes of today. The center was renamed and dedicated on April 30, 2002, in honor of Jane Dills Morgan and Nancy Dills Lee, along with Ewell Lee, who made a sizeable donation in the name of Robert “Bob” and Lucile Dills. They were early and long-time supporters of the Razorback program. The center originally included just four courts, but the renovations upped that number to six. Other improvements included a new ceiling and insulation system, 96 new lamps, resurfacing of all the courts and 12 electronic scoreboards that hang from the ceiling. When the building was rededicated, massive internal renovations were made to the complex to provide one of the best facilities in the country. With six courts, the indoor complex proved to be ideal when the somtimes cold, unpredictable weather of Northwest Arkansas prevented matches from being played outside. The speedy courts were just resurfaced this year. The stadium seating of the Dills Indoor Tennis Center puts even the most die-hard tennis enthusiast at ease. With 500+ chair back seats and standing capacity for 200+ more, the Dills Indoor Tennis Center is one of the largest in the country. Large heaters and an insulated ceiling provide a warm environment in even the coldest of winters, allowing athletes to improve their skills all 12 months of the year. The indoor center includes locker rooms for women’s and men’s programs, coaches’ offices and lobby. Prior to the most recent SEC Championship events -- the men in 2008 and the women in 2009, the facility hosted the men’s in 1994 and women’s in 1997.

Walters was named SEC Player of the Week after he earned both singles wins and both doubles wins over Iowa and a ranked DePaul team. Walters was also awarded the overall SEC Sportsmanship Award. The Hogs had a huge victory over No. 43 Santa Clara at its home courts. The Razorbacks pulled off the 4-3 upset after dropping the doubles point. The Razorbacks also collected a big 4-3 win over No. 48 Vanderbilt. The team was recognized by the NCAA for outstanding work in the classroom, being ranked in the top 10 percent nationally in its respective sport in multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR). The APR provides a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. Tennis is the first Razorback men’s sport to be recognized for its APR ranking. In 25 seasons, head coach Robert Cox has graduated every student-athlete to complete his athletic eligibility with the Razorbacks and has guided Arkansas to more than 300 victories. Cox has more than 400 wins for his career, but recorded his 300th at Arkansas with the victory at Santa Clara. He has guided the Razorbacks to 14 seasons with 12 or more wins and is responsible for almost 40 percent of the wins in program history. While Arkansas will be losing three seniors from the 2012 squad, it has a talented bunch of recruits coming in for the 20122013 season.

2012 match-by-match

coach cox’s preview How does your team take steps to improve from last season? “The most important thing is the culture of our program to make it a winning culture. This team is so close to that and the chemistry is very very good. I think that is going to pay off dividends in a big way this spring. Not only are these guys good tennis players, but when you add a real close bond amongst each player it really increases the success of the team.” Talk about the chemistry of this year’s team compared to last year’s team. “Every team is a little different and we have made a big deal about this team’s chemistry because we have gone through a few years where we really didn’t have any really clear team leaders. This team; I don’t know if there is one clear leader, but they all get along so well together and their work ethic is just very good.” Talk about the new additions to the 2013 roster. “We have Pete Thomason who redshirted last year. He is a junior college All-American who brings the real core winning attitude having being a member of Tyler Junior College national championship team. So, he knows what it takes and he knows what you have to do to win a national championship. The three true freshmen, Santiago Munoz, Jacob Herndon and Austin Robles have all brought a piece of freshness to the program. Their eyes are all wide open and all three of them have added a little spark to the team.” What are you looking for from the upper-classmen this season? “I think the guys that have been through the last three years, we have had some not so stellar seasons, but last year I think we really turned a corner. These upper-classmen, especially Gregoire Lehmann and Mike Ward being the only two seniors; those guys have seen the low times and they appreciated the good winning season that we had last year. Last year was really a turning point that all of the hard work is starting to pay off. Mike Nott, Hall Fess and Manfred Jeske along with the two seniors have played these tough schedules the past few years and now know what to expect in such a highly talented conference schedule.”

18

How will the success of the fall season enhance the chances of better play this spring? “We had a successful fall. We had one that everyone had some good results. Not one person really broke out, but everyone as a collective group showed that they could play. That is something that we can build on. We won some championships, but I think what we can take from the fall is that we are a very deep team. Everyone on this team can play. All of the guys got better as the fall went on and they understand their roles.” Talk about the 2013 spring schedule and some of the tough opponents you will be facing. “Our schedule is as about as solid as we have ever had. Our non-conference schedule is excellent and we are going to be tested early and often. We have been invited to the ITA Kickoff where we may have the opportunity to play Virginia, who was the runner-up in the NCAA Tournament last year, along with North Florida and Georgia State; two other solid top 75 teams. We also have numerous other top 75 matchups in our nonconference part of our schedule including UAB, Oregon, New Mexico, Tulsa and Minnesota. Then of course when you get into the SEC everyone is impressive. We want to be back up in the top 25 and playing in the SEC gives us that opportunity to do that.” What are some of your expectations and goals for the team this season? “Obviously we have to get back to the NCAA Tournament. It has been six long years since we have made the tournament. Our goal is to get the program back up to be a NCAA Tournament team year in and year out like we use to be and there is no reason we can’t be in the top 25 by the end of the year with the tough schedule we play.”

Most recently, Cox has coached Chris Nott, who was named to the All-SEC team in each of the last two years. In both years, he earned second-team honors. During Nott’s junior season, he finished the year ranked No. 67 in the nation and was named as an alternate for the NCAA Individual Singles Championship.

Going into his 26th season as the head coach of the University of Arkansas men’s tennis team, Robert Cox has guided the Hogs to unprecedented heights and attained national recognition on a consistent basis. As the all-time leader in wins amongst Razorback coaches, Cox added to his total last year and now has 306 career wins. Cox grabbed his 300th win with a thrilling victory at No. 43 Santa Clara. Over the last 25 years, he has led Arkansas to nine NCAA Tournament appearances, six regional finals and one Sweet 16 appearance. He has also notched 14 seasons with 12 or more victories, coached 11 teams that were ranked in the top35 at the end of the year and produced 12 All-Americans. The tennis program, which began in 1895, has tallied 767 all-time victories. Cox, with his 306 wins, represents 40.0 percent of the all-time total. From 1980-2007, under Cox’s guidance, the Razorbacks were ranked in the top 30 of the nation at some point during each of those seasons with the exception of the 2000 season. Arkansas’ highest national ranking under Cox came in the 1992 season when the team finished the year at No. 17. In addition to the All-America selections, Cox has had 23 All-SEC selections and seven SWC champions, two ITA national champions, two ITA top-ranked singles players and one ITA No. 1-ranked doubles team.

23

One of Cox’s best recruits and arguably one of the best players to come through the men’s program was Blake Strode. In his final year, Strode went 27-12, earned All- America honors and was the SEC ScholarAthlete of the Year. He ended the year ranked No. 13 in the nation and advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Individual Singles Championship. Cox’s 2008 club recorded wins over No. 22 Vanderbilt, No. 33 Oklahoma and No. 49 Mississippi State on the way to a 12-victory season. Strode was, again, a first-team All-SEC selection in 2007, but the highlight of the year came after a group of former Razorbacks renamed center court at the newly christened and renovated George M. Billingsley Tennis Center in Cox’s honor. In 2006, Cox and the Razorbacks had one of their best seasons to date. The Hogs scored 18 victories and reached the regional finals of the NCAA Tournament. The 18-win season was the most by a UA squad since 1989. In that same season, Arkansas won the ITA Central Region team championship and advanced to the ITA National Indoor Championship. Cox won his 350th match as a coach on April 7, 2006, at Auburn and was named the ITA Central Region Coach of the Year that same season. The Razorbacks had one of their best seasons under Cox as they finished with a No. 22 national ranking. Adrian Zguns went 2612 and earned All- America status and All-SEC honors.

robert cox In 2004, Cox was, again, named coach of the year for leading the Razorbacks to a No. 24 national ranking and into the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 for the first time since 1986. He also became UA’s all-time victories leader among coaches with a 6-1 win over Hawai’i on March 12. The win was his 219th at the helm for Arkansas and moved him past Tom Pucci, Cox’s coach at Arkansas.

ference championship with a 18-6 record. He was named the 1988 ITA Region VI Coach of the Year and followed up with another conference title in 1989, finishing at 19-8.

Only the second coach in school history with 100 wins, Cox has coached eight All-Americans in Mike Brown, Tim Crichton, Euan McGinn, Tom Hamilton, Marcus Hilpert, Oskar Johansson, Adrians Zguns and Blake Strode. Under Cox’s guidance, Johansson became the most recent Arkansas player to capture a national title and earn a No. 1 ranking in 2001.

While Cox was a regular in the singles lineup, he and Apache partner Ray Anders reached the finals of the National Junior College doubles championships in 1976, earning All-America honors. Cox transferred to Arkansas after his sophomore season, and as a player for the Razorbacks in 1977 and 1978, he was part of squads that produced a 48-10 record under Pucci.

Cox also coached Crichton and Hamilton to a National Clay Court Doubles title and an automatic berth in the NCAA Championship in 1996. That same year, the partners held the nation’s top doubles ranking for most of the season and became the first Razorback pair to secure the top spot since Peter Doohan and Pat Serret won the NCAA doubles championship in 1982. Taking the reins of the UA program in 1988, Cox turned around a team that had gone 9-16 the previous year and won the Southwest Con-

Cox began his collegiate playing career at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas, earning All-America honors in doubles for legendary junior college coach Fred Kniffen.

After earning a business administration degree in the fall of 1978, the Palestine, Texas native spent a year as the head pro at Willow Brook Country Club in Tyler. Cox then left Tyler to travel the ATP tennis circuit, playing in Europe. Cox taught at the Kansas City Country Club in Mission Hills, Kan., until going back to Tyler Junior College as the head coach for both the men’s and women’s teams. During his tenure, he led the men’s team to the NJCAA national

championship in 1985 and the women’s title in 1987. The women’s team also collected a pair of national runner-up finishes under Cox. Cox has a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Texas at Tyler and is married to the former Meredith Rooney of Little Rock. Meredith is currently employed by the Springdale School District serving as a literary coach. His daughter, Afton, is a 2004 graduate of the University of Arkansas and received her master’s degree in education in 2005. She is currently in her fourth year of teaching at Southwest Junior High in Springdale.

Asst. coach: Rincon

Eduardo Rincon joined the Razorbacks as the assistant coach for men’s tennis in the summer of 2008. He has made an impact on the program and is highly respected among colleges and coaches. His experience and expertise make him a key factor to the success of the Razorback program. Since arriving at Arkansas, Rincon has helped coach two All-Southeastern Conference selections in Blake Strode and Chris Nott, and one All-American (Strode). Strode earned All-SEC and All-America honors in 2009 and Nott was named All-SEC for two straight years (2010, 2011). During his All-America year, Strode advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Individual Championship. He also finished that same year ranked No. 13 by ITA. Since 2008, Rincon has been part of a Razorback team that has tallied 38 wins, including six conference victories. Prior to Arkansas, Rincon worked for three years as the assistant women’s tennis coach at the University of Alabama. During his three seasons at Alabama, Rincon was instrumental in guiding the Crimson Tide to an appearance in the NCAA Championship and a top-40 final season ranking. He helped guide the team to a berth in the 2006 NCAA Championships, a year in which the team finished the season with a No. 39 national ranking. He also coached several ranked players during his stay at Alabama.

26

As the Alabama assistant, Rincon coached Robin Stephenson and Ashley Bentley, who earned first-team All-SEC honors, while Mari Muller was named to the all-conference second team in 2006. Robinson received an invitation to the 2006 NCAA Singles Championship where she teamed with Bentley to earn a spot in the NCAA Doubles Championship that same season. Stephenson finished the year with a No. 24 singles ranking, while she and Bentley were No. 18 in the final ITA doubles rankings. Successful in his playing career as well, Rincon was a three-time All-American at Valdosta State. To compliment his three All-America selections, he was awarded the Mid-South Conference Player of the Year honor in 2002. In 2010, Rincon was named to the Gulf South Conference’s All-Decade team. As a senior in 2005, he finished with top-five rankings in both singles and doubles and won the 2004 ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award. He reached No. 1 ranking in both singles and doubles at different points during his career. For his accomplishments on and off the court, Rincon was also named the 2004 Male Athlete of the Year at Valdosta State.

In February of 2010, Valdosta State gave Rincon its highest honor by being inducted into the school’s sports hall of fame. His playing career also featured appearances in ATP Tour events. As a native of Colombia, he played in the Davis Cup from 1997-2001 for his country where he competed against players like former world No. 1 Marcelo Rios and Guillermo Canas. During that same span, he played on the satellite and challenger levels in over 30 countries. Rincon has also held ATP rankings in both singles and doubles. Born March 22, 1976, Rincon is married to the former Rosemary Ramsey. The couple has two daughters, Ana Maria (5) and Kathryn Christina (3). Tennis is a large part of Rincon’s family. His brother Mario is the head coach of the men’s tennis team at the University of Miami, and he and brother has worked with worldclass tennis players including Mary Pierce and Anna Kournikova.

Vol. Coach: Zogaj Texas. In doubles play, Zogaj earned one conference win with teammate Matt Hogan. The Belguim native rounded out his sophomore year with 10 singles and six doubles wins.

Nikolas Zogaj took the role as the volunteer assistant coach for the 2012-2013 season after completeing his senior season as a player in 2011-2012. In his senior season as a Razorback, Zogaj was named team captain. Zogaj went 16-15 in singles play recording 2 victories at the No. 1 position. Zogaj, one of three seniors, was also a leader in doubles play collecting 14 victories with five different partners with seven coming in tournament play. During the 2010-2011 season Zogaj stepped up as one of the upperclassmen for the Razorbacks. He grabbed a conference win over Auburn’s Tim Hewitt, who earlier in the year was ranked No. 65 in singles by ITA. In that match, Zogaj gutted out a tough three-set victory, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. In doubles, Zogaj shined for the Razorbacks as he teamed up with Mike Ward to go 14-9 and be the only Hog doubles team to win double-digit matches. Zogaj began his sophomore year with two straight wins at the Razorback Invitational. He also picked up a win at the ITA Central Regional Qualifying Match against Dave Welkener from St. Louis University. In doubles competition for the fall, Zogaj was triumphant in four straight matches with partner Nick Spinazze during the Razorback Invitational. He also snagged a win with doubles partner Bradwin Williams at the Las Vegas Classic. During spring competition, Zogaj gathered six wins. Zogaj defeated No. 85 Daniel Whitehead from

28

Zogaj joined the Razorbacks in January of 2009 and quickly demonstrated how valuable an addition he was to the Hogs, winning three out of his first five matches. At the Auburn Spring Classic, Zogaj defeated opponents Corrado Degli Incerti Tocci of Virginia Tech, 7-5, 6-4, and Porter Powell of Auburn, 6-4 6-3. He posted fives wins for the season, ending singles play with a 5-8 record. In doubles play, Zogaj made his only appearance with teammate Dmitry Lebedev at the Auburn Spring Classic. The duo dominated the court with an opening round win over Ryan Lissner and David Roberts of Lousiana-Lafayette 8-0. Zogaj finished the spring season with a record of 1-1. Zogaj attended Institut Dechamps in Brussels, Belgium. He was the Belgium National Boys 16s champion and was ranked 700th by the International Tennis Federation. Zogaj was born on April 14, 1989, to Niko Zogaj and Marita Lockefeer in Antwerp, Belgium. He has a brother, Sascha. In his free time, Zogaj enjoys listening to music and playing a variety of sports.

AS A JUNIOR (2011-12): Gergoire Lehmann solidified himself as one of the most consistent and reliable Razorbacks during his third year on campus. Lehmann finished the year with 11 overall wins in singles, but 10 were won in dual play alone. Lehmann suffered an ankle injury early in the fall season, but was back to full strength at the start of the spring. Lehmann was called on every week to play at either the No. 1 or No. 2 positions for Coach Robert Cox in singles and held his own very well tallying five wins at the top spot and four at the two spot. The France native also earned one victory against a nationally ranked opponent, No. 105 Kyle Dandan of Santa Clara University. Lehmann’s 7-6, 6-4 win helped solidifiy the Hogs upset victory over the Broncos and push them into the top 40 of the ITA rankings. Lehmann did have a number of appearances in doubles as well, playing with Nikolas Zogaj and fellow junior Mike Ward. Lehmann was part of eight total match wins, five coming with Zogaj at the No. 2 spot in dual play.

“Greg is one of the fastest players on our team with a personality to match. He is a very colorful young man and he is a team favorite.” Coach Cox

AS A SOPHOMORE (2010-11): Lehmann accumulated a 12-19 overall record in singles and tallied six wins in dual play. With the majority of his time being split between the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, Lehmann was able to garner at least one win outside of those two positions. Playing at the No. 1 spot, Lehmann defeated Joe Flanagan of Saint Louis, 6-2, 6-2 for his

In doubles, Lehmann teamed up with Chris Nott, Matt Walters and Nikolas Zogaj and totaled a 13-16 overall record. The majority of his doubles time in the spring was played with Nott at the two spot, where the tandem built up a 5-2 record at that position. Overall, they were 6-4 in dual play. AS A FRESHMAN (2010): During his freshman season, Gregoire Lehmann accumulated the second-most wins on the Razorback team with 14. These include wins against No. 95 Matt Brewer from No. 2 ranked Tennessee and No. 104 Vasko Mladenov from No. 8-ranked Texas. AS A JUNIOR (2011-12): Mike Ward was another solid component to the Razorbacks during his junior year. Going 14-15, his win total was good for third on the team behind only then-seniors Nikolas Zogaj and Matt Walters. Ward actually got most of his playing time in the spring where he was 11-10 and was a solid No. 5 player, winning five matches. Towards the end of the year, Ward moved up to play a number of matches at the No. 4 and even No. 3 positions. Ward went 3-0 at the No. 4 spot and finished 2-2 at No. 3. He was also one of the few players to win more than one conference match, joining Zogaj and Manfred Jeske. Ward helped Arkansas to its first conference victory since 2010 when he defeated Vanderbilt’s Joe Dorn, 6-3, 6-1. His second league victory came against Auburn’s Lucas Lopasso when Ward walked away with a gutsy 7-5, 7-6 win. The win against Lopasso started a streak for Ward as he went on to win four of his next five matches against Wichita State, Southern Miss, Lamar and UMKC. In doubles, Ward saw a little bit of time making spot starts for the Razorbacks when needed. He compiled a 9-8 individual record after teaming up with Mike Nott and Zogaj on multiple occasions. His doubles play during the spring was strictly with Zogaj where the two went 1-3 in dual play including one conference win, but back in the fall Ward teamed up with Nott and went 4-0 in the Purdue Invitational to claim the doubles title at that tournament. Ward will return for his senior season as one of the most experience players on the team along with Gregoire Lehmann.

Since 1979, The University of Arkansas tennis program has produced eight 20-win seasons, 20 top 40 final rankings by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and 17 NCAA Tournament bids, but Razorback tennis has been just as successful for many years before that. When Arkansas entered the Southeastern Conference in the fall of 1991, it marked a marriage of a successful program with the nation’s top tennis conference. The conference has continued that top success even to today. For the oldest spring sport at Arkansas, it was yet another opportunity for Razorback tennis to rise to the challenge. Razorback tennis established itself in 1895 as the second-oldest sport of any kind in Fayetteville, behind only football, which was started in 1894. Although the modern game didn’t get its start until the early 1970s, Arkansas’ tennis roots stem back to the mid-1950s. Under the direction of John “Red” Davis, the Razorback program established what soon would become one of the nation’s winningest traditions. Arkansas teams have tallied more than 700 wins over the last 52 seasons. The Razorbacks John “Red” Davis have earned 19 NCAA Tournament bids, and produced 33 All-America selections and 34 conference champions. In fact, the Hogs have had 35 winning seasons since 1955, including 10 in a row from 1977-86. The modern era of Arkansas tennis began taking shape with the arrival of athletic director John Barnhill. Revitalizing the university’s athletic program, Barnhill not only oversaw Arkansas’ return to prominence on the football field, but sparked unmatched success on the hardcourt. The Razorback tennis team reeled off 16 consecutive wins, including back-to-back undefeated seasons, in 1956 and 1957. Standouts like Dick Reid, Randy Robertson and Rudy Martin gained notice for their outstanding play during those historic first seasons, including the school’s first 10-win season in 1965. David Kossover was named head coach in 1968 and the Hogs promptly ran off two straight winning seasons with 10 and 14 wins.

49

Behind the play of Dennis Riza, David Stout, Hal Fincher, Brain Sakey and Mike Vogel, Arkansas continued to assault the record books. The momentum continued to build in the Kossover era as he led the team in 1971 to a 23-9 record and the school’s first 20-win season. Jeff Cook took over the head coaching duties in 1972 and continued to follow his predecessors by surpassing the standard set. Cook’s squads never lost more than nine matches in a season and netted the Razorbacks’ second 20-win season in 1974 (23-5). Cook coached for one more year befor Tom Pucci arrived from New Mexico in 1976. From there, Pucci stamped his name on the Arkansas coaching map by guiding the Hogs to eight straight 20-win seasons and the only 30-win season in school history. After a 1214 season in his first year, Pucci turned the tables and never won fewer than 24 matches in his following eight seasons. Pucci led the Razorbacks to the first of seven consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances beginning in 1980. Arkansas strung together a phenomenal 206-46 record and an .817 winning percentage during that span. In 1980, Arkansas produced its first All-Americans with Ron Hightower, Chip Hooper and Peter Doohan gaining recognition for the team’s school-record 31 victories. In all, Pucci’s teams would produce five AllAmericans, including Hightower, Hooper, Doohan, Pat Serret and Kelly Evernden. Perhaps the biggest win in Razorback tennis history came in 1982 when the doubles tandem of Doohan and Serret clinched the 1982 NCAA doubles title. Pucci left the Arkansas program in 1984 as the winningest coach in school history, but the success he ignited continued to flame in the years to come.

razorback history

razorback history Pucci’s influence was felt immediately upon his departure as former Hog standout Ron Hightower was hired as the head coach. The former All-American posted 43 wins in his two seasons before giving way to Mike Patrick for the 1987 season. In Hightower’s two-year stint, the Hogs produced four All-America selections, including Tim Siegel, Richard Schmidt, Joey Blake and Bobby Blair. Current head coach Robert Cox was hired for the 1988 season, a decision that paid immediate dividends. A former player of Pucci’s, Cox led his alma mater to back-to-back Southwest Conference titles in 1988 and 1989. Cox has continued his success story, becoming only the second coach in school history to reach the 200-win plateau. In 2004, he passed Pucci as UA’s all-time victories leader and enters the Tim Siegal 2013 season with a 306 victories at Arkansas. Mike Brown, who claimed a No. 1 ranking in 1989, Tim Crichton and Tom Hamilton, who claimed a No. 1 ranking in doubles in 1997-98, Euan McGinn, Marcus Hilpert, Oskar Johansson, another No. 1-ranked Hog and the 2000 ITA National Clay Court champion and Blake Strode have earned All-America honors under Cox. In addition, Cox has led the Razorbacks into yet another era of Razorback tennis in the Southeastern Conference. In 20 seasons in the nation’s most competitive environment, Arkansas has collected 22 All-SEC selections, including Hilpert, Crichton, Hamilton, Daniel Pahlsson and Johansson, Nathan Price, Adrians Zguns and Strode In 1996, Arkansas showcased its campus and facilities to its new league members by hosting the SEC Tennis Championship. The Razorbacks returned to the NCAA Tournament with back-to-back appearances in 1997 and 1998, reached the regional finals in 2001 and 2002, and made a third straight NCAA appearance in 2003. In addition, Cox has guided the Hogs to 11 top 35 finishes since 1988. In 2004, not only did Cox become UA’s all-time victories leader, the Hogs also hosted an NCAA Regional for the first time and won two matches in NCAA Tournament play for the first time. The Razorbacks beat Oklahoma State and then Tennessee to advance to the Sweet

In 2005, many individuals earned honors through out the season. Rohan Gajjar (No. 62), Matt Roberts (No. 118) and Zguns (No. 111) all found spots on the final ITA individual rankings list. In doubles play, Gajjar and Zguns ranked No. 25. Gajjar also qualified for the NCAA Singles Tournament. During the 2006 season, the squad garnered a final ITA ranking of 22nd and recorded 18 wins, the highest season win total in 17 years. The team made its 17th NCAA Tournament appearance and played in its 11th Regional Final match. Individually, Zguns secured a trip to the NCAA Sweet 16 en route to earning All-America accolades. Blake Strode was Arkansas’ most recent successful player to come through as he finished his career on a high note, advancing to the semifinals of the NCAA Individuals Tournament and earning All-America honors. Strode compiled 97 wins as a Razorback over his four-year career. Those wins are good for fifth in Arkansas history. Earning recognition for his sportsmanship as well as his athletic and academic abilities, Strode was named the recipient of the ITA/Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship earlier this month as well as the central region recipient of the ITA/Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship Award. Strode earned a double major in international economics and Spanish while at Arkansas, maintaining a 3.976 grade-point average. After pursuing a tennis career, Strode plans on attending Harvard Law Blake Strode School. The St. Louis native now plays on the ITF Futures Tour and has earned two wins as well as reaching the U.S. Open qualifying tournament twice since graduating from Arkansas.

Founded in 1871, The University of Arkansas is the flagship institution of the University of Arkansas System. Located in Fayetteville in Arkansas’ northwest corner, the U of A is the state’s foremost partner and resource for education and economic development. The U of A offers 213 baccalaureate, master’s, doctoral, professional and specialist degree programs. In keeping with its status as Arkansas’ land-grant university, the U of A has a 140-year-old mandate to educate, to conduct basic and applied research, and to extend knowledge and resources to the people of Arkansas and beyond through public engagement and service. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching recently classified the U of A as a national research university with a very high level of research activity, based on the number of doctoral degrees awarded, research grants received, and other factors. The U of A is the only Arkansas institution with such a ranking and is among just 108 institutions in the United States (out of 4,633) to have received that classification. The U of A has enormous influence over Arkansans’ social, cultural, and recreational life, especially the widespread passion for the university’s athletics teams, the Arkansas Razorbacks. The U of A’s location in northwest Arkansas is viewed as one of the university’s strongest attributes. Fayetteville is widely recognized as one of the best college communities in the U.S. The city’s Dickson Street district abuts the U of A campus and features scores of restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues. Northwest Arkansas is a vibrant economic region with a national reputation for its high quality of life. Three of the U.S.’s largest corporations have their world headquarters in the region: Tyson Foods, J.B. Hunt Transportation, and the world’s largest retailer, Walmart, Inc. Because of their presence, many other corporations have established primary or secondary headquarters in Northwest Arkansas. Their close proximity to the U of A campus, along with their executives’ and employees’ active involvement in university life, offers students and faculty exceptional opportunities for research partnerships, internships, and post-graduation employment. The U of A boasts one of the most unique features and traditions found on any college or university campus: Senior Walk, a nearly three-mile stretch of concrete sidewalks crisscrossing campus into which the names of every U of A graduate is engraved. More than 140,000 names currently appear, grouped alphabetically by year of graduation. Senior Walk epitomizes the university’s emphasis on “putting students first,” a philosophy captured in its tag line, “the YOU of A.” The U of A features distinctive architecture, including its signature building, Old Main, finished in 1875. As the original administrative facility, the iconic building now houses the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. The college is named in

Old Main One of the original buildings on Arkansas’ campus, Old Main symbolizes the strong con-

nection to the past and the focus upon the future which come together in the present at the University of Arkansas. Completed in 1875, Old Main stood the test of time until the mid1980s when age and modern building codes threatened to send it to the wrecking ball as had happened to its sister building at the University of Illinois. A major fund-raising campaign by alumni totally renovated Old Main. Reopening in 1992, the building maintains the feel of a Victorian-era building with high ceilings and elaborate wooden trim. Just below the surface of the period hardwood floors, Old Main is hard-wired to the internet and built to last well into its second century. Even with renovation, Old Main remained unfinished until 2005. One of the gifts during the Campaign for the Twenty-First Century specified the installation of a clock, originally planned for the blank faces of the south tower. As mentioned, Old Main was built from shared plans with its counterpart on the Illinois campus, with one important difference. The north tower of Arkansas’ Old Main is taller than the south tower. Legend says this was symbolic of the Civil War as the lead engineer was a northern veteran.

honor of former U of A President (and, later, U.S. Senator) J. William Fulbright, who helped create the prestigious international scholarship and fellowship programs that bear his name. The U of A’s distinctive Fulbright Peace Fountain, designed by architect Fay Jones, recognizes its namesake’s role in promoting peaceful resolution of world conflicts. Academically, the U of A is organized into 10 schools and colleges: the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences; the College of Education and Health Professions; the College of Engineering; the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences; and the Sam M. Walton College of Business. The university also features the Fay Jones School of Architecture, the Graduate School and International Education, the Honors College, the School of Law and the Global Campus, which provides academic outreach and programs to more than 15,000 learners a year. The U of A’s total annual operating budget for FY2012 is $528 million. Tuition and fee revenues make up the largest source of revenues, followed by an annual state appropriation. Almost 77 percent of all full-time undergraduate students receive some form of financial aid. U of A undergraduate tuition rates were ranked 38th lowest in the nation among land-grant universities, in keeping with the university’s emphasis on keeping itself accessible and affordable. In August 2011, the U of A enrolled a record 23,119 students. The student body consisted of students from all 50 states and more than 100 countries. More than 300 student organizations also exist on campus. There are plenty of things to do on- and offcampus. The HPER Center, the university’s state-of-the-art recreational facility, offers a great place to climb, swim, run, lift weights, do aerobics and yoga, or play basketball. Cultural and recreational options include attending lectures, readings, and theatrical performances, shopping opportunities, and listening to live music on nearby Dickson Street. In 2009, University Chancellor G. David Gearhart presented a long-range strategic plan that was formally endorsed by the elected leaders of the faculty, staff, and student body. The plan emphasizes a commitment to “students first,” and outlines goals and strategies to ensure that all students receive the resources and support they need to achieve their academic goals. The plan also emphasizes the U of A’s commitment to transparency and accountability to the people of Arkansas in its operation. More information about the U of A may be found at www.uark.edu.

Senior Walk The University of Arkansas is proud to be the last university in the nation maintaining what once was a common tradition of etching its graduates’ names into the campus sidewalks. The 100,000th graduate’s name went down in cement during the 1990s. The names on Senior Walk stretch over three miles of campus sidewalks. The story of Senior Walk is a perfect example of how the University of Arkansas brings its commitment to the past together with innovations for the future. When the costs involved in hand-etching names into concrete forced numerous other universities to give up, the University of Arkansas turned to its physical plant and engineering school grads to create a one-of-a-kind computerized sandblasting machine -- the SandHog. Each summer, the SandHog roars across the front lawn of Old Main, etching the names of graduates into sidewalks.

As chancellor, Dr. Gearhart instituted the first tuition freeze in 24 years and implemented a $220 million campus building renovation and refurbishment plan, as well as a campus-wide energy savings plan. He has also undertaken a renewed emphasis on the arts on campus, including the establishment of the “All Steinway Campus.” Dr. Gearhart has additionally implemented a major cost savings program that has already resulted in over $29.4 million in cost reduction and savings to the flagship campus. Campus enrollment has also grown by nearly 6,000 students in the past three years to almost 25,000 students. At the same time, diversity in the student body has increased significantly. Dr. Sharon Hunt Faculty Athletics Representative

Chancellor G. David Gearhart appointed Dr. Sharon Hunt to be the faculty athletics representative (FAR) for the University of Arkansas in August 2010. Dr. Hunt is the first woman and non-lawyer to hold the post. Dr. Hunt has been on the University of Arkansas faculty since 1990, and she served as the department head of the recently renamed Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation from July 1,1990 until June 30, 2011 except for the 2000-01 academic year, when she served as the interim dean of the College of Education and Health Professions On June 30, 2011 Dr. Hunt stepped down as department head and returned to the faculty at the rank of Professor giving her more time to devote to the FAR position. A high school athlete, Hunt’s involvement with collegiate athletics dates back to her own college days at the University of Arkansas when she played extramural sports with the women’s basketball and tennis teams prior to the enactment of Title IX. After receiving her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physical education from the university, she went on to earn a Doctor of Education degree from the University of Georgia, where she taught a variety of undergraduate courses as a graduate assistant. Upon the completion of her doctoral degree, she joined the faculty of the University of Kentucky for 13 years, where she taught both undergraduate and graduate courses and served as the graduate coordinator for the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. In 1990, she and her family returned to Fayetteville. Dr. Hunt is involved in the student-athlete advisory council on campus and chairs the Academic Credential Review Committee and Athletic’s Academic Integrity Committee, and serves as an ex-officio member of the Faculty Athletics Committee. In addition, she travels to represent the University of Arkansas at various SEC and NCAA meetings. ARKANSAS LEADERS

ADMINISTRATION

JEFF LONG

VICE CHANCELLOR FOR INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS & DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Entering his fifth full year as Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics, Jeff Long has guided the University of Arkansas’ Department of Intercollegiate Athletics through a period of unprecedented transition and gained national attention for his leadership while revitalizing a tradition-rich athletics program encompassing 19 sports and more than 460 student-athletes. Long leads a comprehensive athletics program uniformly committed to the development of student-athletes academically, athletically and socially. A part of Chancellor G. David Gearhart’s Executive Committee, Long is helping to chart the course for the future of higher education at the University of Arkansas while integrating Razorback Athletics into the campus community. In each of the past three years, Razorback Athletics has made a $1 million gift to support the university’s academic mission. The department’s total support of university and student programs and initiatives includes $1.9 million in direct funding of academic programs. Long’s leadership and unwavering commitment to the student-athletes and maintaining integrity within intercollegiate athletics has not gone unnoticed. In 2011-12, Long was named a finalist for the SportsBusiness Journal and SportsBusiness Daily Athletic Director of the Year. In the spring of 2012, the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation and longtime chairman Fred W. Smith made a gift of more than $1.25 million to the program in recognition of Long’s leadership of Razorback Athletics. In Long’s tenure, Arkansas has captured 11 conference championships and advanced to 68 post-season competitions, including the school’s first Bowl Championship Series appearance in football, while drawing more than a million fans annually to campus to cheer on the Razorbacks. In 2011-12, Arkansas finished No. 20 in the Learfield Sports Directors Cup, a year-long competition ranking the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic programs, the fourth time in the past five years the Razorbacks have finished in the nation’s top 25. In the classroom, the Razorbacks continue to set new standards including posting a student-athlete grade point average of 3.07 in 2011-12. It marked the fourth consecutive year Razorback student-athletes posted a GPA exceeding 3.0. Arkansas exceeds the national APR multi-year rate by more than 10 points in 18 sports and has seen a steady rise in graduation success rates. Student-athlete development has also been a priority including the establishment of the Razorback Leadership Academy, the first of its kind in the Southeastern Conference. In the community, Razorback student-athletes are more active than ever volunteering more than 5,000 hours of time for more than 100 agencies, organizations and schools. One of the nation’s most active athletic directors on Twitter, Long embraces the opportunity to interact with members of the Razorback Nation whether in person or through social media. Long was selected to replace legendary athletic director and former Razorback football coach Frank Broyles and even before he officially took the reins on Jan. 1, 2008, Arkansas announced that it would combine its previously independent men’s and women’s athletic programs into one combined athletic program. Long adeptly blended the men’s and women’s athletic departments into one unified department and established a new administrative structure. Long has also worked tirelessly to maintain long-time relationships and to forge new relationships for the benefit of the Razorback program including extending Arkansas’ relationship with War Memorial Stadium and partnering with former Razorback Jerry Jones to develop the Southwest Classic, a football

series with Texas A&M played at the spectacular Cowboys Stadium. Under Long’s leadership, the program has fortified its financial standing ensuring more support for the development of student-athletes. According to the Wall Street Journal, Arkansas is one of only 22 selfsustaining Division I-A athletic programs in the nation. As economic indicators were beginning to point toward challenging economic times, Long signed Arkansas to a deal with IMG College to form Razorback Sports Properties that guarantees the Razorback program $73 million during the course of the decade-long agreement. Long also negotiated an extensive all sports apparel and Follow me @JeffLongUA footwear agreement with NIKE, Inc. that will outfit all 19 Razorback sports programs through the 2014-15 season. In December 2011, Forbes Magazine estimated the value of the Razorback Football program at $89 million, eighth in the nation. Arkansas saw the largest increase (59%) from the previous rankings released in 2009. In 2010, Long moved to help meet the growing financial needs of fielding a nationally competitive all sports program. The athletic department launched the “Answer the Call” campaign through the Razorback Foundation which resulted in more than 2,600 new members and helped generate more than $6.5 million in additional support for Razorback student-athletes. With an eye towards the future, Long commissioned a comprehensive plan to assess the future facility needs of the program. Unveiled in October 2011, the Razorback Athletic Facilities Master Plan provided a vision and the road map for $320 million of facility renovations and additions that will help all 19 Razorback sports remain competitive in the Southeastern Conference and nationally over the next 30 years. The first major project from the master plan, the football center, is currently being constructed with a targeted completion date in 2013. A veteran administrator with a track record of the highest commitment to the concept of “student-athlete,” Long has had more than two decades experience in athletic administration at the Division I level including at the University of Pittsburgh, University of Oklahoma, University of Michigan, Virginia Tech University, Eastern Kentucky University and Rice University. Long also understands the coach’s perspective from time spent in coaching staff positions at Duke University, University of Michigan and North Carolina State University. His experience as an athletic director and administrator in five of the six Bowl Championship Series conferences – the Big 12, Big Ten, Big East, Atlantic Coast and SEC - gives Long a uniquely informed perspective on intercollegiate athletics. On the forefront of NCAA governance, Long has served on the NCAA Management Council, the NCAA’s Sports Wagering Task Force and as a member of the Executive Committee of the Division I-A Athletic Directors’ Association. Long currently serves on the NCAA Championships/Sports Management Cabinet. Prior to assuming his current roles at Arkansas, Long served for four years as the athletic director at the University of Pittsburgh. Long redefined Pitt athletics, most notably through the “Quest for Excellence” campaign that raised nearly $34 million to enhance the student-athlete experience. During his tenure the Panthers’ were selected as the No. 17 overall program in the nation in the December 2006 Sports Illustrated on Campus’ All-Sport Rankings. Before arriving at Pitt, Long was senior associate athletic director at Oklahoma for two and a half years overseeing external affairs for the Sooners. In addition, Long was the primary administrator for the Sooners’ highly successful football and men’s basketball programs, along with sport supervision of baseball, wrestling and both golf teams. Long’s first appointment as a director of athletics was at Eastern Kentucky where he served for two and a half years. Prior to Eastern, Long had a brief stay with Virginia Tech as an associate athletics director. He began his career in college athletic administration at Michigan, hired by legendary coach and athletics director, the late Bo Schembechler. During his seasons with the Wolverines, Long was promoted through a series of posts to the position of associate athletics director. A former two-sport athlete at Ohio Wesleyan, Long earned seven varsity letters for the Bishops in football and baseball before completing his degree in economics in 1982. He started his post-graduate career in athletics working on head coach Tom Reed’s staff as a graduate assistant football coach at the cradle of coaches, Miami University of Ohio. Long earned his master’s in education at Miami in 1983, moving on to football staff positions at Rice, Duke and N.C. State prior to joining Michigan. SUPPORT SERVICES Our Goals * Provide the resources to support the academic progress toward intellectual development and graduation for our student-athletes. * Provide career development programs that will enable our student-athletes to develop and pursue career and life goals. * Engage our student-athletes in experiences involving the university, local, state, national, and global communities through services. * Support the development of a well-balanced lifestyle, decision-making skills, encouraging emotional well-being, and personal growth for our student-athletes. * Invest in the personal development of our student-athletes through various programs that enable them to be successful in the classroom, the community, and in their athletic activities. The Student-Athlete Development Office coordinated more than 6,000 hours dedicated to service in Northwest Arkansas and worldwide. Razorback student-athletes worked with more than 100 agencies giving of their time and energy last season. Student-athletes took part in career fairs, corporate office visits and interview training. Razorback student-athletes took advantage of the Razorback Leadership Academy, the first of its kind in the SEC. Student-athletes, coaches and staff were shown steps to become better leaders on their teams, in the classroom, in the workplace and in life. Finally, student-athletes participated in Hogs in Transition, a program designed to help Razorbacks make the move from high school to college. Incoming studentathletes are trained in note taking, time management and computer competency as they begin their collegiate careers. New for 2011-12 was the debut of the Hogspy awards, modeled after the ESPY’s, to recognize academic and athletic achievements as well as leadership and community service. Compliance The University of Arkansas Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is proud to have your interest and support in the Razorbacks. The Razorback Athletics Compliance Office works hard to educate its student-athletes, coaches, staff and boosters on the rules and regulations mandated by the Southeastern Conference and the NCAA. SEC and NCAA rules and regulations can be complex, and every situation is different. The Razorback Compliance Office makes every effort to disseminate information, and they encourage student-athletes, coaches, staff and boosters to contact them if there are questions. The Razorback Athletics Department is proud of your support of the Razorbacks, but we caution you that inadvertent actions by our fans may jeopardize the department, current student-athletes or potential student-athletes.

Bud Walton Arena has also seen an insurgence of fans with Mike Anderson’s return to Fayetteville with his “Fastest 40 Minutes in Basketball” recapturing the spirit of Razorback fans. State-of-the-art facilities, the nation’s best coaches and players and the greatest fans in college athletics come together for some of the most exciting events that take place in the state of Arkansas. The Razorback marketing staff is a big part of the behind-the scenes success of all 19 teams at the university. They assist in the branding of our image, getting information to our fans and helping to fill our venues. Their work is evident in our stadiums, on the videoboards and during pre-event, halftime and post-events. They work with sponsors, maintain the department’s social media presence and welcome new fans with creative ticket and suite packages. The Razorback Marketing Office also handles the University’s trademark licensing program ensuring fans get the Razorback quality they have come to expect. Spirit Squad Along with being a Razorback, serving as a Razorback Spirit Squad member has a long tradition at the University of Arkansas. Currently, the Razorbacks have two coed cheer squads - Arkansas Cheer and Razorback Cheer that inspire the crowds at all home and away football games, men’s and women’s basketball games, volleyball matches, gymnastics meets and many other pep rallies and on-campus and NWA community events. Arkansas also has two dance teams, Arkansas Pom and Razorback Pom, that perform at all home football games, men’s and women’s basketball games as well as pep rallies and on-campus and community events. The squads also perform at baseball games as the RBI Girls. Both the cheer and dance teams compete nationally at the Universal Cheer and Dance team competitions in Orlando in January. Arkansas has a team of uniformed mascots, led by the original Big Red, the Fighting Razorback. Sue E. joined the family along with kid-sized Pork Chop in the late 1990s. Boss Hog is a 9-foot-tall inflatable mascot and Ribby, the baseball mascot complete the mascot team. They can be found at all Razorback games and events. Jean Nail serves as the director of the spirit squad program and is assisted by Kraig Jimenez, cheer coach and Brooke Bailey, dance coach.
