The Bolado Clothiers Story

The Bolado Clothiers story begins in the year 1907 when fourteenyear-old Candido Bolado leaves his village in Cantabria in Northern Spain to seek a better life in Cuba.

Arriving in Havana, Candido starts working in his uncle’s grocery store. But Candido was not interested in the grocery business. He wanted to pursue a career in the Men’s Clothing business. He apprenticed with tailors and even worked in a factory in the United States.

In 1928, Candido and his wife Florinda were able to establish their own men’s clothing store in Havana, Cuba. Originally the store sold bespoke custom-tailored clothing exclusively. As soon as they were old enough Candido’s four children, Jose, Florinda, Candido, Jr and Carlos helped at the store.

Over the years, as the economy in Cuba prospered, Candido expanded the store’s selection to include ready-made suits, shirts and accessories. Candido’s oldest son Jose took over the responsibilities of managing the store and buying the merchandise.

In 1959, Cuba went through dramatic political change. In 1961 Jose left with his wife Maria and their three children, Lourdes, Jose, Jr. and Carlos for Miami to start a new life.

In 1968, after working as an employee in the menswear trade for seven years, Jose opened his first store on Ponce De Leon Boulevard in Coral Gables. In 1972, Jose Jr. joined the business. In 1975, Jose moved the store to the world-famous Miracle Mile. That same year the youngest son Carlos joined the business.

2024 will mark the company’s 56th anniversary.

When a suit is much more than a suit.

How ironic: even as the business world grows more casual, men are showing an increased interest in made-to-measure clothing.

In addition to offering a perfect fit, this tailored clothing option allows the wearer to select his own fabrics, buttons, lining, stitching and lapels. Most importantly, a man can express his unique style by investing in a suit that truly reflects his personality and taste level. More than an investment in clothing, it’s a show of confidence and creativity.

Among the numerous reasons for the recent growth in MTM business at retail: more affordable prices than in the past, often just a 15 percent surcharge vs. off-the-rack suits. What’s more, most upscale clothing makers can now create and deliver beautiful customized clothing in just two to six weeks, even out of Italy. The proliferation of made-to-measure suits on high-profile athletes and celebrities has also inspired more guys to give this option a try.

And today more than ever, as the fashion pendulum in menswear has moved toward slimmer suits, the primary raison d’etre for made to measure clothing is fit. With clothing racks now filled with suits that are skinnier than the men who want to wear them, more guys than ever are turning to made-to-measure, especially those with a little extra weight in the midsection or those with athletic builds. Even guys with ideal proportions are loving this option since nothing shows off a great body like a perfectly fitting suit. The process is simple. Come into the store and one of our highly trained associates will take your measurements (generally anywhere from 15 to 25). Then sit down, relax, and let us show you our incredible selection of gorgeous fabrics from the best mills in the world. Many of the patterns are understated and classic (herringbones, glen plaids, pinstripes) but you might choose to step out of your comfort zone and opt for something a bit more bold and expressive. A deco stripe in purple? French blue instead of navy or silver grey instead of charcoal? Why not? Then once you’ve decided on fabric, we’ll help you with the details: working buttonholes if you like, contrast stitching, cuffs, pleats, the choice is yours!

Bottom line, made-to-measure suits are a wonderful clothing option for everyone from investment bankers to grooms-to-be to college grads about to tackle job interviews to creative types who want to stand out from the crowd. A good made-to-measure suit is both an investment in yourself and a reflection of who you are, a subtle (or not so subtle) way of showing the world your confidence, and competence.

And guys who know who they are generally get what they want, in business and in life.

San Miguel 59 La Habana Label Guayabera Shirt

According to popular Cuban folklore, back in the 18th century, a peasant from Sancti Spiritus, Cuba, asked his wife to sew four pockets on the shirt he used to work in the fields.

The shirt was made of linen, the perfect fabric for the hot weather of Cuba. The pockets were used to hold the Guava fruit he picked in the fields.

Over the years the garment evolved into what it looks like today. Strips of fabric were sewn with fine pleats and sewn on the front and back of the shirt. Two vents with button closures were added to the bottom of the sides of the shirt, giving the garment a more formal appearance.

At Bolado Clothiers we set out to make the finest Guayaberas available. Our Guayaberas are made in Barcelona, Spain by a shirtmaker that has been making shirts since 1930. We use only the finest Linens and cottons from the best European mills.

Our Guayaberas are so special that we created the “San Miguel 59 La Habana” in honor of the store founded by Candido Bolado in 1928 in Havana.

We invite you to stop by the store and shop from the largest selection of the finest Guayaberas available.
