BY DAVID VOLZ CORRESPONDENT

MarBlue, a manufacturer of accessories for mobile devices has announced the expansion of its international headquarters and research and development facility in downtown Hollywood. The expansion includes the creation of 28 new jobs with an average wage of $64,637. This is 150 percent of the average wage in Broward County. There are 30 people now working at the company’s headquarters. The new headquarters will be located at 1955 Harrison Street in the heart of downtown Hollywood. The over 13,000 square-foot facility will be housed in a distinctive Streamline Moderne architectural style building. Due to the explosive growth of the mobile device industry and its continued business success over the past two years, MarBlue is now announcing plans to expand its headquarters in Hollywood, to accommodate its design, sales and marketing departments, according to information from the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). “This will bring a new customer base to potentially patronize our local merchants,” said Jorge Camejo, Executive Director of the City of Hollywood CRA. “It also renovates and updates a signature building on a prominent corner in downtown Hollywood. This adds value to the downtown area and restores an architectural style that is significant to the region. MarBlue is a perfect fit for a unique and elegant building.” “MarBlue is a company that

has demonstrated its commitment to developing truly innovative products and to being to a real community partner in our city,” says Hollywood Mayor Peter Bober. “The company’s expansion in Hollywood represents an important investment in an industry that attracts the creative class and will help grow Hollywood’s reputation as a community that values ‘out of the box’ thinking.” The Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance worked with the City of Hollywood, the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency, Enterprise Florida and the State of Florida Department of Economic Opportunity on a $112,000 Qualified Targeted Industry (QTI) incentive package for which the company qualified. MarBlue, formerly Marware Inc., started in 1993 making software for the Apple Newton, the first fully functional handheld computer. Marware expanded to cases and accessories and relocated to the San Francisco Bay area in 1995. The company’s products were sold worldwide and were available at multiple retail outlets including the Apple-owned Newton stores. With this success in developing functional, trendsetting accessories for PDAs and laptop computers, the company shifted its primary focus and relocated to Hollywood, Florida in 1999, according to the Hollywood CRA. “The impact of this project to the state, county and city of Hollywood is significant because of the concentration on retaining and creating employment opportunities in a high tech industry very important to Broward County,” said Bob Swindell, president and CEO of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance.

Named after the Spanish Wine Maker with feline twist, Marques is a 4 year old rescue from the Broward Human Society that has enlivened our home with his vivacious personality and ceaseless begging. This social cat enjoys family gatherings, patrolling his kitty proof yard, soccer, playing with friends, biting and of course Eating and nap time on our white bed!

K-Sail program launches to benefit at-risk youth A program designed to impact at-risk youth, Kids Sailing Into Their Future (K-Sail), launched Tues., Jan. 28, at the Lauderdale Yacht Club. A team of local leaders participating in the Leadership Hollywood program offered by the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has recently taken the program on as a project to recruit volunteers, publicize the program and expand the web site. K-Sail is a four weekend life-skills program set in a “learn-to-sail” experience. The program is for kids 10-15, who while learning the basics of boating, water safety and marine ecology also learn to live successfully. Based on the New River in Fort Lauderdale, K-Sail influences the lives of kids whose families are exiting homelessness, so they’ll have a better future. The 28’ sailboat, L’Avenir (“the future”) was generously gifted by Marina Bay Marina and Resort and renovated by Research Metrix Group. Partnering with HOPE South Florida to work with children in their shelter programs has offered at-risk youth an opportunity that would normally be outside of their reach. HOPE South Florida is a non-profit organization with the mission to provide hope for the homeless and hurting through services and partnerships with the faith community. Donations, program sponsors and volunteers are encouraged to participate. For more information, please email Stephanie Lateulade at slateulade@hopesouthflorida. org, visit k-sail.org or call 954-566-2311.

FAIRYTALES HOLLYWOOD MAKES GIRLS’ DREAMS COME TRUE IN DOWNTOWN HOLLYWOOD BY CARON CONWAY LEAD CORRESPONDENT Young girls’ fairytale fantasies come true at Fairytales Hollywood, a new downtown business specializing in whimsical parties as well as charitable events designed to brighten the lives of disadvantaged and ill girls. Hollywood resident Javier Rodriguez and his wife Maranda Miller opened Fairytales Hollywood at 2000 Harrison Street in early January. Rodriguez, a private investigator for the past 14 years, was inspired by his love of kids and volunteering and by childhood friend Esteban Barrios, who opened party venue Fairy Tale For Girls (www.fairytaleforgirls.com) in Miami four years ago. Rodriguez and Miller put their own special touches on their party services as well as the interior space itself. The interior design of the business features pink-candy walls, purple glittered floors, a Moroccan-theme facial station and a zebra-print salon with high-heel pedicure chairs. Graffiti artist Skott Rage Johnson donated his talent to the hand-painted murals after learning that Fairytales Hollywood will be involved in charitable endeavors. Fairytales Hollywood and its staff of costumed Fairies offer pampering Spa Parties, elegant Tea Parties and Hip Teen Disco Parties. The vast array of services for fairytale princesses includes glittered makeup makeovers, custom hairstyles, mani/pedis, mini-facials and disco dancing, as well as karaoke, arts and crafts tables, a Nintendo Wii station and smart plasma TVs. Following their makeovers, princesses are adorned with custom-made tutus, jewelry and accessories, and prepared for starring roles in their own Fairytales Fashion Show, complete with an emcee. “We are flexible in creating the perfect package for your vision and budget,” said Rodriguez, who offers extras such as a pink limo ride to the venue, catering, shopping in the Fairytales Boutique, living statues, face painting, candy stations and photography. Rodriguez plans to donate his services and venue at least once a month

to charitable causes benefiting girls, and he welcomes inquiries from foundations, agencies and organizations that are interested in throwing an unforgettable party for disadvantaged, abused or ailing youngsters and several guests of their choosing. “I want to give less fortunate girls a princess makeover and fashion show they will never forget,” said Rodriguez, whose volunteer work includes the YMCA. “We will be offering parties complete with role-play or youth spa pampering, glitter makeup makeovers, disco dance parties, karaoke, and many more fun games and activities.” Upcoming events that are open to the public include the Fairytales Valentine Bash, from 6 to 10 p.m. Fri., Feb. 14, featuring a glitter makeup makeover, mani/pedi with design, minifacial and massage, glitter hairstyling, a fashion show, disco party, karaoke, Wii station, and games and dancing with the Fairies. The cost is $35 per child.

Fairytales Hollywood also will be hosting a special event just prior to Mother’s Day, in conjunction with a local church, for girls who don’t have a mom. “If I can put a smile on a little girl’s face, that just makes me happy and it’s all worth it for me,” Rodriguez said. “I just want to be a part of the community.” Rodriguez, who has lived in Hollywood for the past 10 years, did not have to look very far for the location for his new business. “I love the area. It’s the best atmosphere,” he said. “I moved closer to Downtown Hollywood because it’s very kid-friendly, hosting events such as Funtastic Fridays, and there’s really nothing like what we offer in the area.” Fairytales Hollywood is open daily by appointment only. For more information, call 954-822-4699 or visit www.fairytaleshollywood.com.

FEBRUARY 2014

BY DAVID VOLZ CORRESPONDENT Exceptional Theater Company (ETC) offers a unique theater and arts training program for people with physical and intellectual disabilities. It began in 1991 in Hollywood at the Quest School. The program started with 12 people and now has more than 300 actors and actresses ranging in age from two to 85. ETC’s purpose is to work toward fulfillment of the vision of a fully inclusive program that meets the artistic needs of the special needs community Joe Levy has been a long time participant and enjoys the opportunity to act. “I like being in the plays. I have made a lot of friends. My friends are good actors and actresses. What we do is so interesting,” said Levy. Joe’s father, Ruben Levy is the president of ETC and knows the acting program has helped his son. There are talent shows, awards night and cast parties after every show. And twice a year, they are able to see a professional show. “It is my son’s whole life. He has a tremendous group of friends and they can express themselves,” said Levy. Debra Rivera is the director of ETC. She is also an acting instructor and her son Michael Rivera is in the program. She began as a volunteer and just kept getting more involved. “My son was shy but now he is social. We write plays. My son can’t read the lines but he can repeat lines that other actors give him. I have seen many actors who did not speak and sing but now they will do it. It brings out the best in them. It makes people

learn how to dream with their eyes open. I think it is wonderful.” Rivera said her heart is fully into ETC. She works a full-time job but also considers ETC a full-time job as well. Currently ETC offers a class at Driftwood Community Center on Monday nights from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and works with the United Cerebral Palsy Aftercare program in Hollywood. ETC also offers a puppet class on Wednesday nights from 7 - 9 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hollywood and offers a teaching program at the Lucanus Developmental Center where people receive instruction on Tuesday mornings starting at 10 a.m. Shows take place at Trinity Lutheran Church. “We teach independent thinking and socialization. We help students enhance verbalization and we motivate free thinking,” said Debbie Lombard, ETC executive director. “We also incorporate community volunteers and high school students. We work with all aspects of theater, drama, music and dance. Being involved in ETC has changed my life in a positive way.” Usually a class is one to two hours long and will include ten to twenty actors plus volunteers. The actors will pick a scene to work on. It might be a talent show. Actors often work on writing the script and selecting songs for a scene. Members of ETC will put together an entire play. “The classes are very inspirational to all. This is where miracles happen. It’s where someone who has been unable to verbalize suddenly can speak,” said Lombard. “This is where the wave of a hand or a thumbs

up becomes a line in one of our shows. It usually gets a standing ovation. The goals of ETC include developing skills in people with special needs such as independence, selfrespect and dignity in order to create a more fulfilling life.” ETC has produced many popular plays including Bye Bye Birdie, Aladdin, Grease, Annie and The Wizard of Oz. All have been well received. “We have performed shows in front of audiences of close to 600 people,” said Lombard. “ETC is more than a theater company. People grow up with us and stay involved. We have volunteers who have been active for many years.” Evelyn Richard, is an acting instructor and parent of Jonathan Richard, a special needs student, who participates in ETC as an actor. She loves the program. When Jonathan was nine, Evelyn was seeking a program to help him overcome autism. She wanted a program that would offer pragmatic social interaction for him. Richard discovered ETC and has been active ever since. “This program brings special needs young people together with typical high school students who are volunteers and helps them build relationships and accomplishments. They rehearse plays and then make them happen,” said Richard. On February 22 at 6:00 p.m. ETC will offer a benefit dinner and show at Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School. Tickets are $25. ETC is a non-profit organization that accepts donations. For more information, visit www. etcsouthflorida.org or call Debbie Lomard at 954-729-3555

GRANT AWARDS

Humane Society receives $56,000 grant to spay felines in 33020 Humane Society of Broward County was recently awarded a $56,000 grant to be used exclusively for the spaying/neutering of felines residing in the Hollywood zip code of 33020. Hollywood is the twelfth largest populated city in the state and also an area that has an enormous number of feral and free roaming cats. As a result there are thousands of kittens born each year and many of them end up in animal shelters. Owned cats, feral cats and neighborhood cats residing in the intervention area are eligible. Included are the spay or neuter; free vaccinations, Revolution for fleas and intestinal parasites and ear notching for ferals. The ultimate goal is to reduce the population of unwanted cats and the number of cats surrendered to the shelter. The goal is to sterilize 2,240 felines. Appointments are necessary and proof of residency is required. Surgeries will be performed at the Humane Society of Broward County and

at DPC Veterinary Hospital in Hollywood. The shelter has a limited number of humane traps available for those who feed felines, but are unable to handle them. To make an appointment to have an eligible cat spayed or neutered, please call DPC at 954989-9879 or email the Humane Society at spayneuter@hsbroward.com or 954-463SPAY(7729). Trap-Neuter-Release, commonly referred to as TNR is an effective way to control and manage feral and free-roaming cat populations. In fiscal year 2012/2013 the HSBC provided a total of 12,322 spay/neuters for the community which includes these dedicated individuals and organizations who do TNR. It is generous grants such as this that will make the difference in the number of unwanted cats in Broward County. New Hibernians of Hollywood receives tourism grant Visit Florida, the state’s official source for travel planning, has awarded a small business grant to the New Hibernians of Hollywood for the 2013-2014 Fiscal Year. “We were pleased that Visit Florida and Enterprise Florida selected us from among a large number of grant applicants, during their most competitive grant cycle to date,” said Mark Rowe, a Director ROWE of the New Hibernians of Hollywood. “These funds will be used to produce the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Festival and will help us better position and market Downtown Hollywood as a desirable destination.” New Hibernians of Hollywood, a 501(c)3 non-profit, is primarily in existence to organize and run the Downtown Hollywood St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Irish Festival, in close partnership with the City of Hollywood. The event, which takes place each year on the Sunday prior to St. Patrick’s Day, draws up to 10,000 people to Downtown Hollywood, the biggest crowd of any other single downtown event.

MENCHIE’S TO DONATE PROCEEDS MON., FEB. 10 The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood’s Teen Arts Ambassadors will hold a fundraiser on Mon., Feb. 10 from noon to 9 p.m. at Menchie’s, 1866 N. Young Circle. Fifteen percent of yogurt sales will be donated to the Center during that time, and if more than 100 people participate, the Center receives 20 percent of the proceeds. The money raised will assist the funding of scholarships for summer camp programming. “The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood wants to thank Menchie’s for supporting the Center by graciously donating a portion of its yogurt sales on that day,” says Art and Culture Center SATTERLEE of Hollywood Executive Director Joy Satterlee. “The Center also thanks Teen Arts Ambassador Melody Kleinman for her fundraising idea as well as all of the Teen Arts Ambassadors for their help with this project.” Kleinman said she came up with the Menchie’s fundraiser idea because the establishment is near the Center and families like going out for frozen yogurt and ice cream. Leading up to the fundraiser, the Center’s

11 Teen Arts Ambassadors passed out flyers about the event, promoted it through Facebook and other social media, and sent email blasts. The day of the fundraiser, they will distribute flyers in downtown Hollywood. Teens interested in the arts who are seeking leadership experience, career readiness, and service hours before high school graduation are invited to join the Center’s Teen Arts Ambassador program. Teen Arts Ambassadors assist the Center’s education staff with year-round arts educational programming while learning how things work behind the scenes. Teens will cultivate their creativity by helping children with crafts, participating in performances and exhibitions, and more. “Working with the Center has been such an amazing experience,” Kleinman says. “I’ve met some of my best friends at the Center. But more than that, because people at the Center are more than willing to take the time to show you how to do things, I’ve learned a lot. I have more confidence in talking to people, and I’ve learned to be on time for meetings and be organized, and how to put together events and fundraisers.” For more information, call 954.921.3274 or visit ArtAndCultureCenter.org.

Hollywood resident, Realtor, travel consultant and former innkeeper Scott Rivelli is a longtime champion of the city he calls home. But as the new executive director of the Florida Superior Small Lodging Association (FSSLA), he’s able to make an even greater impact on Hollywood’s position as a sought-after tourist destination. Rivelli took over the helm of the FSSLA, a non-profit association of independently owned and managed properties with fewer than 50 rooms, in December. Florida offers some 180 boutique hotels, seaside cottages, inns, and bed and breakfasts. Superior Small Lodging properties must meet high quality and service standards during a rigorous annual inspection that addresses cleanliness, furnishings and amenities. Hollywood boasts 30 SSLs, nearly half of the 62 in Broward County. Nineteen Hollywood properties also received the prestigious 2013 White Glove Award for their perfect housekeeping score during the annual inspection performed by an outside company. For 13 years Rivelli owned and managed one of those award-winning properties, the Ocean Inn, which he bought in 2000. “I purchased the Ocean Inn as a simple real estate investment to flip. I never intended on becoming an innkeeper,” he recalled. “When the economy changed, I was forced to take a more active role in managing my hotel. Eventually it became a labor of love as my passion for travel and tourism continued to evolve.” Under Rivelli’s management, the Ocean Inn garnered more than 20 awards and was ranked in the top three among 68 Hollywood hotels on leading consumer review travel website TripAdvisor. “I sold the Ocean Inn in March 2013 and was working my way back to my fulltime real estate career, but tourism kept calling me back,” said Rivelli, who was recently asked to serve on the Hollywood CRA’s new Tourism Advisory Committee and co-chairs the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce’s Tourism and

Entertainment Committee. When the retiring FSSLA executive director asked him to submit his resume to the board for consideration, Rivelli saw the ideal opportunity to combine his interests in the travel and tourism and real estate industries. “I realized this was a perfect balance between my two careers,” he said. “I can continue my career in travel and tourism while helping to educate and grow the Florida Superior Lodging Association brand though real estate consulting and acquisition opportunities.” The FSSLA was established in 1989 to bring brand awareness to the smaller boutique lodgings throughout the state that offer a high level of service, comfort and cleanliness at competitive rates. Florida’s offerings are particularly unique because of their intimate tropical settings, artistic special touches, and distinctive architecture and furnishings, with member properties thoughtfully and tastefully updated to enhance their authentic Florida charm. Rivelli said those looking for a weekend getaway, family vacation or staycation in Hollywood can enjoy an exceptional vacation value at a property dedicated to providing a unique quality experience with all the comforts of home, including kitchens or kitchenettes at most properties. “It’s like coming to a residence rather than coming to a corporate hotel,” Rivelli said. HOLLYWOOD HILLS HIGH SCHOOL MILITARY ACADEMY By David Volz

“We place a strong emphasis on high academic standards, leadership, teamwork and community service. We want to dispel some of the myths about our Academy. This is not preparation for military service. There is not mandatory service or even expected service after graduation. This is not a boot camp for misbehavior.”

Joshua Weber, 16, is a cadet at the Hollywood Hills High School Military Academy. Weber was attracted to the Academy because he wanted more honors classes. High school students who want a military education and the opportunity to develop leadership skills and pursue high level academics are enrolling in the Hollywood Hills High School Military Academy. “I wanted a more structured high school. I believe this program will help me get into college. I like the Raiders program which is part of the Army JROTC. We have the best First Sergeant, Manuel Valdez in Broward County,” said Weber. He especially enjoys the rope bridge activity. “You take two trees and a construct a rope bridge and help

eight cadets cross it. My goal is to go to the U.S. Naval Academy,” said Weber. Desiree Maxwell, 15, likes the military academy. She is hoping for a career in the medical field. “I love the rigorous course and academics. I love my physics class. It is very challenging. I enjoy the military environment because it provides a more structured environment and you are around people who care about what they are doing,” said Maxwell. “The staff is great. They always push students to do their best and provide tutoring help if it is needed.” Alena Hall, 14, appreciates the structure of the military academy. “I like my courses, especially Advanced Placement Human Geography and I like the

teachers. The teachers are willing to help you. If they see you are failing, they work to provide more opportunities. I hope to go into the FBI or CIA after high school,” said Hall. This is a magnet program that attracts highly motivated students from all over Broward County. The program began two years ago and now includes 260 students in grades nine and ten. Next year it will include juniors and the following year the first seniors will graduate. Eventually the Academy will include between 400 and 600 students. “This is a magnet program. We are a special program that offers military education, leadership, citizenship and scholarship,” said Michael Warkentien,

SCHOOL NEWS assistant principal for the Hollywood Hills Military Academy. Students in the Academy take honors and advanced placement level courses in mathematics, science and other demanding academic subjects. They participate in physical training on Fridays. This includes the physical of the Army JROTC program at the school. The students will perform running, jumping jacks, pushups and other exercises. The rank structure for the students follows the U.S. Army. Students begin as a private with no insignia and work up their way up to Cadet Colonel. Students are promoted based on participation in JROTC and their grades. Hollywood Hills offers an Army JROTC program for any local student who wishes to participate. Students in JROTC can participate in the Raiders program. They compete against other high school JROTC programs in fitness events such as a team three mile run, a ropes course, team pulling of a military vehicle and relay races involving the carrying of sandbags. The JROTC program also includes a color guard program, marksmanship club and JLAB, which is an academic club. Many of the cadets are involved in other extracurricular activities such as band, varsity sports and service clubs, according to Barbara Oropesa, the magnet coordinator for Hollywood High Hills High School. The Military Academy is a magnet program for students from all over Broward County. Transportation is provided for students who live south of Sunrise Boulevard. “We place a strong emphasis on high academic standards, leadership, teamwork and community service. We want to dispel some of the myths about our Academy. This is not preparation for military service. There is no mandatory service or even expected service after graduation. This is not a boot camp for misbehavior, said Warkentien. The goal is that all of the students will go college or post-secondary education. Warkentien said that most people who complete high school JROTC programs go on to further education.

Search is on for Florida’s ‘Outstanding Senior Volunteer’ Salute to Senior Service is recognizing the invaluable contributions of adults age 65 and older who give at least 15 hours a month of volunteer service to their favorite causes. Members of the community are asked to nominate and vote for these everyday heroes between Jan. 15 and March 1, 2014, at SalutetoSeniorService.com. State winners will be determined by popular vote. Home Instead, Inc. will donate $500 to each of the state winners’ designated and approved non-profit organizations, and their personal stories will be shared online on the Salute to Senior Service Wall of Fame. In addition, $5,000 will be donated to the national winner’s designated and approved non-profit charity. “Seniors have so much to give and make a positive impact on our communities daily,” said Dinah Pickett, owner of the Home Instead Senior Care office serving Hollywood. To nominate a senior age 65 or older who volunteers at least 15 hours a month, visit SalutetoSeniorService.com. Completed nomination forms can be mailed to Salute to Senior Service, P.O. Box 285, Bellevue, NE 68005. For more information about Salute to Senior Service or the Home Instead Senior Care network’s services, call your local Home Instead Senior Care at 954-505-7957.

Segway tours spotlight award-winning Hollywood Beach Broadwalk

BY CARON CONWAY LEAD CORRESPONDENT

Fun-seekers of all ages can explore Hollywood Beach’s award-winning Broadwalk in a unique way on one of Ultimate Florida Tours’ popular Segway tours. Company owner Jonathan Rosen promises “an experience of a lifetime on one of the world’s coolest machines” – and online reviewers agree. In fact, tours on the Segway Personal Transporter are the #2-rated activity in Hollywood on leading travel website TripAdvisor. “Everybody always has a great time. Even people in their 80s love it because they never thought they could do it,” said Rosen, who will offer a complimentary lesson to prove his point. “People think they have to be like a circus animal, but it’s way easier than riding a bike.” The Segway PT-i2, a self-balancing single-rider machine, remains unaffected by a recent change to the municipal beach ordinances that prohibits vehicles that are not operated exclusively by human power or expressly allowed by state or federal law. Segways are permitted on 25-mph streets, sidewalks and bike paths, provided the operator yields the right of way to pedestrians.

Segway enthusiasts are drawn to the adventurous yet safe nature of the batterypowered vehicles, which can reach speeds up to 12.5 mph. Operators go forward by leaning and putting weight on their toes, and stop by leaning back and shifting their weight to their heels. “It’s very safe because it’s connected to

your body,” Rosen said. “Everything you want to do, you don’t even have to think about it.” After a three- to five-minute lesson, riders are zipping along the scenic 2.5-mile Broadwalk, which was recently named Florida’s best seaside boardwalk by USA Today and designated one of the Top 10 Public Spaces In America for 2013 by the

American Planning Association (APA). Segway tours can be reserved between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. daily and start at $24.95 per person for a 20-minute ride. A one-hour, 4-mile excursion is available for $59.95 and includes ice cream and pizza and an optional backstreet ride at top speed. A two-hour, 8-mile excursion also includes a visit to the Dania Beach Pier for $89.95. An hour-long night tour is available for $79.95 per person, and one- and two-hour comedy tours featuring funny impersonations of various celebrities through provided headsets will be added in January. Parties of five or more people receive a 10 percent group discount. Rosen introduced Segway tours with a business partner in Deerfield Beach in August 2012 before the 23-year-old entrepreneur opened his own company on Hollywood Beach last February. “I thought it was a beautiful location and a really good market,” said Rosen, citing the proximity of both Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Port Everglades. Florida Tours also books a variety of excursions, including jet ski rentals, JetLev rides, fishing charters, and helicopter, airboat, kayak and guided paddleboard eco tours.
