VCA Hollywood Animal Hospital to Match Pet Food Donations for Home-Bound Seniors Through Dec. 16 For the 6th year, the VCA Hollywood Animal Hospital (VCAHAH) is generously partnering with Meals on Wheels South Florida’s (MOWSOFLO) Meals for Companion Pets Program to match donations of pet food for home-bound seniors in Broward county. "This initiative grew out of a desire to give back to our community. Our partnership with Meals on Wheels for Companion Pets allows us to give back in a very tangible way, and it is a great source of pride for all of our staff and doctors," said Linda Ream, Communications Coordinator of VCAHAH. "This year, our relationships with our neighboring Veterinarians and businesses affirm our community bond and allow us to have a larger reach to help this caring organization." MOWSOFLO’s Meals for Companion Pets Program started when volunteers began to notice clients sharing their meals with their pets. Seniors on restricted budgets can have a difficult time meeting their own needs and often the needs of their companion animals can be neglected. With only the support of volunteers and donations, this organization provides monthly delivery of food for these loyal pets and their owners. Pet food is provided through the generosity of community donations. The need for donations of cat food is in particular demand this year. "Each month, MOWSOFLO for Companion Pets delivers over 800 pounds of pet food for the southern portion of Broward County alone,"said Bobbi Arnold, Co-Chair of the program. "The VCAHAH food collection goes a long way to help feed the furry family members of the seniors in need here in Broward."
Donations of canned and dry food for cats and dogs made through December 16th, 2017 will be deposited into Meals on Wheels South Florida’s Meals for Companion Pets Program food bank and portions will
be matched by the VCAHAH. Drop off sites are located in both the main hospital and annex building at the VCA Hollywood Animal Hospital, located one block east of I-95 at 2864 Hollywood Boulevard.

City Upholds Decision Not to Allow an Extreme Sports Park on Sunset Golf Course Property BY ROBIN KERR DRULARD MANAGING EDITOR robin@hollywoodgazette.com
Well over 100 people filled room 219 in City Hall On Thursday night, November 16th for a special planning and zoning board appeals meeting to determine the future use for 2727 Johnson Street, former home of the old Sunset Golf Course. At the heart of the debate was the proposed Hollywood Adventures Park, a multifaceted park intended to provide a variety of active and passive sports for kids and adults, from walking paths to paintball. On one side of the fence is Richgreen LP -Richmound Italia, the owner of the property, who has so far invested a reported 4 million dollars in testing and planning to meet city requirements for this type of a business. In this venture, they are partnering with Giovanni D'Egidio owner partner of Hollywood Adventures Park LLC, already a successful operator of a similar concern in Los Angeles, who is empowered to speak on behalf of the property owner. Vocally opposing the plan is the North Central Hollywood Civic Association, citing that residents do not want a paintball facility in the middle of their neighborhood. The argument seemed to come
down to a game of semantics rather than a discussion of what would be best for the city and its residents. The parcel is currently zoned “OS” Open Space District which is described as follows: District Purpose: This district is intended to provide standards for privately owned uses which are characterized by large open spaces. The intent is to preserve and protect areas having natural beauty and to mitigate the effects of development on the environment. Main Permitted Uses: Privately owned fields, undeveloped lands, landscaped recreation areas, bodies of water, campgrounds and similar uses. A special exception is made for emeteries. The decision against the Hollywood Adventures Park, by city Planning Manager Leslie DelMonte, and upheld in the special meeting, said that “The proposed site plan cannot be evaluated for compliance, as the intensity of the proposed use does not meet the intent of the Zoning district as outlined in the Zoning and Land Development Regulations.” Also, two members of the boards, who had been openly opposed to the project, refused to recuse themselves from the vote, claiming that their personal opinions would not get in the
Hollywood Voters May Find General Obligation Bond on 2018 Ballot BY DAVID VOLZ
The Hollywood Commission recently held a workshop to discuss the possibility of placing a general obligation bond on the November 2018 ballot. This bond would fund improvements throughout the City. This might include a new city hall complex and a new police station. It would include funding for neighborhood improvements, roadway improvements and municipal parks upgrades. There will would also be funding for police technology and new fire equipment. The bond could raise anywhere from $56 million to $147 million. City staff has been directed to study the matter further. CORRESPONDENT

way of their objectivity on the vote. Attendees in the courtroom appeared to be about evenly split for and against the development. A survey conducted by Mr. D’Egidio shows that a strong majority of residents are actually in favor of the park and the many benefits being offered to the locals. Meanwhile, the site itself remains in some disrepair, especially after some damage from Hurricane Irma. The proposed park would add trees and the current plan should greatly improve the appearance of the site from the street view. No sports activ-
ity would be visible from the street. The board has approved the use of the land for either a campground or a cemetery. Company spokeman D’Egidio explains that a campground would be open 24/7 and bring in many outsiders, as opposed to the park which would only be open during non school hours, except for private events, and would not benefit Hollywood residents nearly as much. Hollywood Beach Road Project at A1A Underway through 2019 The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has awarded a $9,366,292.09 contract to Community Asphalt Co. for improvements along A1A from Sheridan Street to Monroe Street in Hollywood Beach. Included in that figure is $2,914,245.00 from the City of Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). Construction began on October 9, 2017 and should be completed by Spring 2019. The project includes the removing of old asphalt and resurfacing the roadway, the
widening of sidewalks and upgrading ramps to meet ADA requirements. There will be the replacing of drainage structures and the installation of flap gates. There will be the removing, narrowing, and /or upgrading medians and curb and gutter and the adding of 4-foot bike lanes from Monroe Street to Arizona Street. There will be the adding of sharrows (share the road pavement markings) from Arizona Street to Sheridan Street, the upgrading and installing of new pedestrian signals and
minor signalization and street light improvements. At least one lane of traffic in each direction of A1A will be maintained at all times. Traffic will be shifted to either side of the road as needed. A sidewalk will be maintained on at least one side of the road within the project limits. Signage will be in place to guide pedestrians through the work zone. Lane closure information and construction work hours will be provided in the weekly traffic report distributed by FDOT.

ellow Cab Broward can add yet another first to its standing as a leader in the taxicab industry with the addition of smart devices that replace traditional taximeters and let passengers know up front what their trip will cost. Yellow Cab Broward launched its new “No More Meters/Guaranteed Pricing” initiative at the end of August following taximeter deregulation by the state July 1 and subsequent passage of a county ordinance giving cabs the flexibility to use alternative forms of meters and charge rates that are lower than the county-regulated amount. All 500 Yellow Cabs are now equipped with Android tablets that utilize software
developed by the company to determine the shortest route for each trip and calculate the fare before the cab starts moving. “While most forms of transportation advise the passenger of the cost and require payment prior to the trip, historically taxicab passengers don’t know the cost until the trip is complete,” said John Camillo, Yellow Cab Broward’s president and CEO. “Admittedly, this leads to a certain anxiety among passengers who would watch the fare increase as the trip continued.” This “meter anxiety” is fueled by
concerns over drivers taking a longer route than necessary and time-consuming traffic conditions such as an accident, train crossing or bridge opening. Yellow Cab’s new technology not only lets passengers know their fare up front, but because it utilizes the optimum distance-and-time option, that fare may be less than what it would be with a traditional taximeter. “Using Google Maps, fares are calculated based on the most direct route and real-time traffic conditions before the trip begins,” Camillo said.
Passengers need only provide their pickup location and destination address, either through the Call Center that’s open 24/7, the Ride Yellow smart phone app, an online fare calculator, or by hailing a cab. “No other cab company in the United States has this,” Camillo said. “Through technology, Yellow Cab has brought the taxicab industry into the modern era.” Yellow Cab Broward boasts numerous firsts in the industry, including the first wheelchair accessible vehicle (1967); the first computer-aided dispatch system (1986); the first company to use GPS technology to send the closest car to pick up passengers (2002); and the first in the state to install cameras in cabs (2012). “We have always been on the cutting edge of the taxi industry,” Camillo said. “And now we’re the first to use smart tablet technology to provide passengers with their fare in advance.” For more information on Yellow Cab Broward, visit www.yellowcabbroward.com. Gourmet coffee roaster Koffee Kult recently relocated its operations to an expanded facility in Downtown Hollywood, where a stateof- the-art process is utilized in roasting the finest coffee beans from around the world. Koffee Kult first opened in 2011 in western Hollywood and moved its headquarters Oct. 1 to 311 S. 21st Ave., where coffee beans are prepared for packaging using its new top-of- the-line Loring Roaster. During the roasting process, the flavors of green coffee beans are developed into the fresh coffee beans sold to consumers. The smokeless Loring Roaster locks in more flavor than conventional roasters, creating a higher-quality, fresh coffee bean. “Oh no,” I thought, as I looked quickly at the window of the new clothing store on Hollywood Boulevard, “another tacky clothing store with absolutely nothing I’d ever wear. “ But happily, I was wrong! Upon closer inspection, I found that Buffalo Exchange was not only not one of those, but like nothing I’d ever seen! Hip in Hollywood Buffalo Exchange is perhaps the most unique concept in fashion that Hollywood Boulevard, actually Holly-
wood Florida, has ever seen. The grand space showcases a mix of new, used, some vintage and some one-of-a-kind clothing, accessories and footwear for men and women in unique displays that flow perfectly with the fun, beautiful, special spirit that is our Hollywood. The store is part of a national company based in Tucson, AZ, started in 1974. We’ve got the only one in Florida. (Owner Kerstin Block, originally from Sweden, thought the word “Buffalo” sounded very American.) Since then, the company has grown to 49 stores in 20 states and continues to be run by Kerstin and her daughter Rebecca. Walking into the store, I was impressed with the young, hip and fashionable staff, knowledgeable and helpful, as well as the wide variety of merchandise available. In October, the store also featured racks of both new and used Halloween costumes, and I found the missing piece I needed. Besides their stores, Buffalo Exchange maintains a strong online pres-
ence, including their fabulous website, https://www.buffaloexchange.com, as colorful and interesting as the stores themselves, filled with company info, fashion and style tips and visuals, news on current needs, charity updates, and how-to’s on selling by mail. The company puts out an in house magazine that’s also replicated on the site. Buy, Sell or Trade Your Clothes The store is always buying and selling and you have the choice of selling for cash or for store credit on the spot. Store managers will determine a selling price and give you 30% in cash or 50% in store credit. Clothes must be in good shape, freshly washed, and fit the style profile of the Buffalo Exchange customer. In February (exact date to follow) there will be an art exhibit honoring Larry Joe at the American Legion Post 92. Mayor Josh Levy has stated the date will be officially proclaimed Larry Joe Miller Day and the unveiling of a mobile monument to Larry Joe will be displayed. Speaking of Post 92, local artist Dahyana Portilla has a must see piece hanging on the walls. How cool is it that New Times has named both our 3rd Saturday Art Walk and our Mural project best in Broward! Hollywood Scavenger Hunt set for Dec. 15-17 The 3rd annual Hollywood Scavenger Hunt presented by Yellow Cab will take place for 3 days throughout the city of Hollywood, Florida from Dec. 15-17, 2017. It's an old-fashioned scavenger hunt using the technology of today. Participation is free and anyone with a smart phone can play. Players complete missions by uploading photos, answering questions, scanning QR codes and using GPS check-ins to earn points. The scavenger hunt has gotten rave reviews for the past two years. “For someone that has lived in Hollywood one year, I learned so much about the city. It also brought business to local shops (which we tried something everywhere)!! We decided to do about 90% of the missions on bike so it was also a great way to get our exercise in!” Fun, family-friendly missions The Hollywood Scavenger Hunt is designed to inspire participants to learn about Hollywood, Florida while having fun, meeting new people and making lifelong memories. Most missions are open-ended and you will have until the end of the hunt to complete them. There are however, several that will need to be

onny’s Famous Steak Hogies has been in business for nearly 60 years, but this popular Hollywood eatery still does things the old-fashioned way, taking pride in the quality of both the food it serves and the service it provides. The family business has operated at the same location at 1857 N. 66th Ave. since Sam “Sonny” Nigro, a successful baker from Philadelphia, opened what was originally known as Sonny’s Sandwich Shop on May 29, 1958. Pizza and Italian dinners were added to the menu in the early ’60s, and in 1983 Sam Nigro and his business partner and son John decided to specialize in hoagies. The restaurant name was changed to Sonny’s Famous Steak Hogies, with “hoagies”

grilled onions, mushrooms, mozzarella, provolone, white American cheese and cheddar cheese sauce. Other hot hogies are the chicken breast cutlet, chicken breast parmesan and hot ham, as well as burger and cheeseburger hogies. Cold hogie options include ham, tuna, turkey and mixed varieties. Sonny’s also serves salads, available with homemade French or Italian dressing, and salad platters, which include grilled chicken, ham, Italian cold cuts or tuna. After 4:30 p.m., the menu also includes a 12-inch pizza with a variety of toppings available, garlic rolls, and ziti, spaghetti, and ravioli with tomato sauce and an optional meatball. Sonny’s Famous Steak Hogies has seen its popularity grow even more after it was featured on Guy Fieri’s “Diners, Drive-Ins

Despite the changes through the years, Sonny’s Famous Steak Hogies continues to earn the loyalty of its customers. All bread is still made daily from scratch, and the tomato sauce, meatballs, pizza and salad dressings are all homemade. The burgers are never frozen, and the boneless rib-eye steak is sliced fresh on the premises. “We don’t take shortcuts. We’re interested in doing things the right way,” said Nigro, who started working at Sonny’s in 1969 at age 15. The menu features steak hogies and meatball hogies, available with sauce,

January 2017 brought on board Ed Walls, General Manager of the Diplomat as the 2017 Board president, leading a group of 46 individuals with a vested interest in Hollywood and a sincere heart for the greater good of the community. At the Board Installation, early March, several business leaders in Hollywood were recognized for their commitment to making Hollywood the best place to live, work and play. The Chamber brought several innovations in 2017 including Sunday in the Park--A Taste of Hollywood. This Food & Wine, Beer Garden, Music, Arts and Business Expo was a hit for our chamber as we continue to strive to give the business community opportunities to shine. Festival goers had a blast tasting the food from 22 of the best restaurants in the greater Hollywood area! Jackie Levy, our first lady of Hollywood, hosted the VIP Brunch featuring GG’s Waterfront Bar & Grill and Point Royal’s scrumptious signature dishes. Stay tuned for the second annual Sunday in the Park, Sunday, April 15, 2018. Amongst the 2017 innovations was the addition of a leadership style coaching as part of the Leadership Hollywood (LH) curriculum. In fact, in May, Hollywood hosted its first Spark Hollywood fast-pitch event “Shark Tank style”, a project of LH class 41, at the ArtsPark. Thirty seven entries from inventors and innovators, were reviewed and vetted and five finalists presented at the event. This collaboration with the city and community builders was ideal to attract young entrepreneurs to Hollywood. Other 2017 initiatives include the launch of www.HollywoodHasIt.com - this website is designed to promote Hollywood’s businesses. We also started providing a Developers’ Roundtable to better assist the city in developing an efficient and practical development review process and to better promote development opportunities in Hollywood. Commission Agrees to Street Name Changes, Begins Removal Process

Following a long period of discussions and protests by community activists, the Hollywood Commission has agreed to rename three streets named after Confederate leaders at a final vote at the November 15th Commission meeting. Some of the protests became heated and a number of people were arrested at the meeting. All members of the commission voted in favor of the change except for Commissioner Peter Hernandez, who abstained from voting. The street names which will be changed are Forrest Street and Forrest Drive which will become Freedom Street and Freedom Drive, Hood Street which will become Hope Street and Lee Street which will soon be known as

Liberty Street. Benjamin Israel, the community activist who has long led the effort to change the street signs, thanked the commissioners for their decision. Next the City Engineer will begin to notify appropriate agencies of the name changes and will procure services to replace the street signs. The scope typically will allow the vendor to take possession of the signs to be replaced as scrap metal. City Engineer’s staff will then obtain Broward County Traffic Engineering Division’s approval of the sign standards. Residents and businesses will be notified through Notify Me alerts, New Horizon article, notices to relevant Homeowner/Civic Associations, and the news media.

The Hollywood Commission agreed to hire Douglas CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com Gonzales as its new City Attorney during the meeting on November 1. The contract approval by the Commission was unanimous, and Gonzales officially started November 13. He previously served as the city attorney for Margate. Gonzales will earn about $195,000 a year. He will also receive a $6,000 per year car allowance and a $1,200 per year cell phone allowance. Gonzales replaces former City Attorney Jeff Sheffel who resigned following a DUI incident.

Broward Mayor Beam Furr Sounds Alarm on Coral Reef Crisis; Works to Improve Public Transportation
Beam Furr, currently the Vice CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com Mayor of Broward County and District 6 Commissioner on the Broward County Commission, was sworn in as Mayor of Broward County on November 28. Furr had previously served for 12 years as a City Commissioner for District 2 in Hollywood. Meanwhile, off the coast of Hollywood, a major environmental crisis is taking place. And Furr is concerned. Much of the coral reef off the coast is dying or diseased, and no one is sure why. The State of Florida has provided $1 million to monitor all the water that is going into the ocean. It is hoped that this will provide important information on what is causing the reefs to die. At the same time, Furr is at work to develop a more centralized and efficient improved recycling program that would recycle about 75 percent of County trash from all Broward cities. What we can’t recycle or burn will be placed in a landfill.” Another topic currently on the table is a penny sales tax increase, slated to pay for improvements to public transportation. Furr is in favor of this
increase, which would likely be allotted to improvements to traffic signals and the development of a light rail system. Furr would also like to see an improved app that would allow the users of public transportation to know which buses or other public transportation vehicles are near their location. He wants to see overall improvements to public transportation to encourage more people to use it.

Hollywood Police Make Arrest in Animal Cruety Case An arrest has been made in connection with the animal cruelty case that occurred on Tuesday, October 10, 2017. Hollywood resident Brendan Evans, 31, is charged with Aggravated Animal Cruelty following an investigation into the incident that left a pit bull dead two days after he was found with multiple stab wounds and stuffed into a suitcase. DNA taken from the suitcase was linked to Evans. An investigation into Evans revealed previous arrests including an arrest by BSO in 2012 for domestic battery and he is currently on probation for bank robbery in Hernando County. Evans fingerprints were also found to be linked to a residential burglary in the
City of Hollywood. He was taken into custody for the burglary and violation of probation. On November 14, 2017, Detectives executed a search warrant at Evans’ residence. “We will not tolerate any form of animal cruelty or violence in our city. Each reported case of animal cruelty, be it physical abuse or neglect, is disturbing, and this case is particularly heartbreaking. We were all pulling for Ollie to survive, but unfortunately he didn't make it. However, due to our investigation, we are now able to provide justice for Ollie,” said Acting Police Chief Chris O'Brien.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Four, will conduct a Public Information Workshop on Wednesday, December 5th, from 5 to 7 pm, regarding mobility improvements along 14th Avenue in Hollywood between Atlantic Shores Boulevard and Sheridan Street. The meeting will be held at the Hollywood Main Branch Library at 2600 Hollywood Boulevard, 33020. The proposed roadway improvements will include the accommodation of bicycle lanes through the minor widening of streets where possible, shared lane markings, a shared use path, milling and resurfacing, and re-striping. The workshop will be conducted as an informal open house, with representatives offering pertinent information and answering questions. Design plans and exhibits will be available for public viewing. Capital Access Fund Launches in Broward to Provide Minority-Owned Businesses Greater Access to Capital On November 28, 2017, Morgan Stanley, National Urban League Urban Empowerment Fund (NUL-UEF), National Development Council (NDC), and the Urban League of Broward County (ULBC) launched an initiative to provide minority owned businesses in Florida with greater access to capital through the Capital Access Fund (CAF) – a lending initiative which provides access to capital and business education for minority entrepreneurs. Through the partnership, CAF and the ULBC’s Entrepreneurship Center will expand its efforts to promote sustainability, create jobs and build community wealth in Florida. “Minority-owned businesses are the fastest growing segment of small businesses in this country and yet they face many challenges ---- access to capital being one of them. The National Urban League is pleased to expand our national partnership with Morgan Stanley and The National Development Council by bringing The Capital Access Fund to Florida,”
said Marc H. Morial, president and CEO of the National Urban League. “Vibrant and expanding minority-owned businesses are vital to the future economic growth of this country and The National Urban League will continue to provide both policy and programmatic leadership to ensure this important segment of our business community is not overlooked.” CAF launched in Cleveland in December 2016 as a three-year, $8 million program that provides minority business owners with access to capital as well as pre- and post-loan counseling to ensure the success of its borrowers.
