WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? Wedding Planner? Day of Coordinator? Venue Coordinator? Wedding Planner. This person guides the couple through the planning process from setting the budget to keeping Aunt Sally away from Uncle Buck. The wedding planner will also answer the couple’s questions, assist with contract and vendor negotiations, and create a detailed timeline of the wedding day events. Be sure to ask your wedding planner if they provide event design services. Event designers help make your event cohesive and stylish. They have an artistic eye that can truly transform a space. Day of Coordinator. A Day of Coordinator (usually a month of service) is all about logistics but on a shorter timeline than a planner. They will confirm vendor contracts

and create a day of timeline, as well as make sure payments and guest counts are in order. They will coordinate everything involved on the day of the event from set up to breakdown, make sure everything is in order, nothing is forgotten, and you are free to enjoy your day! Venue Coordinator. This person is usually the individual you met with the day you signed your venue contract. They will handle the set up of all tables and chairs, manage the food and beverage provided by the venue, coordinate placement of wedding items with wedding planner, handle venue-parking logistics and manage venue staff. Be sure to ask your venue coordinator all of the tasks they will handle on your day.

FINDING THE PERFECT RINGS 6 helpful tips Start early, and do your research. Buy your rings 2-4 months before your wedding so that you have time for engraving, if desired, and some cushion in case there are any delays. This means you should start looking 4-6 months before the big day, or earlier! Find a good, reputable jeweler, educate yourself on metals and diamonds, and start evaluating your likes and dislikes. Think long-term. If you intend to keep your rings forever, then consider settling on a more classic style versus something trendy. On the other hand, you could plan to “update” your rings on your five, 10 or 20 year anniversary, in which case, go for what you love right now - trendy or not! Be clear about your budget. You may have heard the guideline, “spend about two months’ salary” on the engagement ring. While this gives you a ballpark amount to consider, the bottom line is this: find an amount you are comfortable with and stick with it. To match or not to match. If it’s important to you that you both have matching wedding bands, then by all means, do it! Just know that it’s not a requirement, and regardless of the jewelry, you’ll always know who belongs to whom. Consider your lifestyle. Active, dressy, casual or formal…consider how you live, and the activities you engage in as you think about what you want to wear on your ring finger for the rest of your life. Smart sizing. To be most accurate, don’t have your finger sized first thing in the morning, just after exercising, or when your body temperature is quite hot or cold.

B

Make Your Wedding Special with Engraving

From engraving your wedding bands to etching your Unity Sand Ceremony Set, we can make special memories of your wedding day. A special touch is engraving your toasting flutes and cake server. Remember all the people standing up in your wedding. It’s just the right thing to do to give them an engraved gift of thank you. Think about your bridesmaids, groomsmen, flower girl, ring bearer and the parents.

SELECTING A GOWN Your wedding day attire will be the most memorable outfit you’ll ever own. Consider all your options – a designer gown from a full service bridal salon, a family heirloom needing some redesign, or a custom designed gown to reflect your personality?

• Which designers do you carry? • Do you have the dress that I want on hand? • Do you offer accessories and shoes as well? Can you dye the shoes? • Do you offer pressing, alterations or bridal slips? • Can you guarantee a delivery date for my dress? • When can you offer fittings for my bridal party? Can measurements be handled over the phone? • Can you make last-minute alterations? • How far in advance must I order my gown? • What is your cancellation policy? • Is a deposit required? If so, when and how much?

ALTERATIONS & FITTINGS There are usually as many as four fittings that follow saying “yes” to the dress. Here are some tips for making this process run as smoothly as possible. Give yourself and the tailor sufficient time. Know that most gowns can’t be changed by more than two sizes, up or down, so buy a dress that fits the biggest part of you rather than the smallest part. It’s easier to take a dress in to hug your figure than it is to let it out. Choose a tailor that has a great reputation, not the lowest rate. At each fitting, make sure to wear the same undergarments and shoes that you’ll be wearing on your wedding day. Even the slightest tweak in bra padding or heel height can change the way a dress hangs and where the hem falls.

FIND THE GOWN

OF YOUR DREAMS Most girls are guilty of daydreaming about their wedding dress. We’re constantly bombarded with movies, TV, and photos of picture-perfect, iconic brides. Just think of the Kate Middleton effect! And what makes these brides iconic? The dress. Although finding the right dress for your wedding day isn’t as easy as daydreaming, we’re here to help with these bridal gown basics. 4

Prepare to spend a little more

Remember that just because it’s a great price doesn’t mean it’s a great dress for you. And don’t forget to bring along a pad of paper to track styles, dress names and numbers.

The strapless gown still reigns supreme, but the market has expanded in recent years to include dresses with all manner of straps, sleeves, and accessories. Satin, tulle, and lace are the most commonly used fabrics for wedding gowns, and the type of fabric you choose will greatly affect the price. Start your search by gathering ideas. Bridal magazines, designer websites, and Pinterest are a great source. Compile the styles you like that suit the mood of your wedding. Then make an appointment at your local bridal salon and invite a trusted team of family and friends to join you. At the salon, don’t be afraid to think outside the box. You never know what a gown will really look like until you try it on, and lots of brides end up choosing a style of gown they never even dreamed of.

CREATING A

FIRST IMPRESSION Invitations seem like such a basic item on your wedding “to do” list, but there’s a lot that goes into them and a lot that comes out of them! Invitations set the stage and build excitement offering guests a peek at your wedding’s style. With creativity and proper etiquette, your invites will give a great first impression.4

Invitation tip

Have an A-List and B-List of people you want to invite. Send out the A-list eight to ten weeks in advance and use the B-list as alternates for those from the A-list that decline.

It’s best to find a qualified local professional to act as your go-to person for all paper goods and etiquette questions. If you choose to purchase online, give yourself some extra time in case there are any problems that require shipping back and forth. Before you choose a style of invitation, it’s crucial to know some of the broad themes of your wedding: casual vs. formal, bold colors vs. soft hues, etc. Knowing these key details will help you find or create invitations to reflect the style of your day. If possible, order invitations and other wedding stationery six or more months before the big day. Formal invitations should be sent six to eight weeks before the wedding, with save-the-dates going out months in advance. CREATIVE THINKING While formal invitations complete with calligraphy and foil-lined envelopes are never out of style, the breadth of invite design options has grown immensely. Many brides hire a graphic designer or artist to add a personalized, handmade touch. The use of watercolor and illustrated elements is also growing to such an extent that many stationery companies now have a resident artist on staff. PAPER PARTS & PIECES Wedding invitations typically consist of several parts: a ceremony card, a reception card, a response card with its stamped/addressed envelope, a card with directions to the ceremony/ reception and hotel information for out-of-town guests, and an inner and outer envelope. But feel free to think outside the box with your design if

INVITATIONS that suits the style of your wedding day. An experienced professional will be able to assist you more with the details of these various parts and the proper wording for each. To address the envelopes, you can run them through your printer in a beautiful font, handwrite them yourself, or hire a hand-letterer to do

the job for you. Avoid using labels at all costs, even clear ones as they just don’t convey the specialness that a wedding deserves. Include your return address on the back of the envelope and make sure that your invitations have sufficient postage before popping them in the mail.

THE LEVEL OF FORMALITY The first order of business is to evaluate how formal your wedding will be. This depends on the time of day of the wedding, the location, but most of all on you and your fiancé. Whatever level of formality you settle on, make sure you’re consistent throughout - invitations, décor, food, location, and wedding attire should all match in terms of formality. (Most people do this instinctively!) In warm weather and for beachy destination weddings, lighter colors (tan, light grey, white) look effortlessly handsome. Though in all climates, darker colors (navy, charcoal, black) always look sharp. Ties, vests, and cummerbunds can match the wedding colors, or compliment them with neutral tones. If the bridal gown is ivory, the men should wear ivory shirts, not white, to compliment her. Semiformal and formal weddings have plenty of options: a high quality, single- or double-breasted men’s suit in black, charcoal, or navy with a Windsor knotted tie in white, ivory, navy, silver, or black is a less formal option. For a more formal look, consider a tuxedo with a single- or double-breasted dinner jacket, a white or ivory pointed-collar shirt, a vest or cummerbund, and either a bow tie or a four-in-hand tie (a “fancy” knotted

GROOM necktie). A very formal wedding, called “white tie,” calls for the traditional black tuxedo with tails, a vest, a white wingedcollar shirt, and a bow tie. DISTINGUISHING THE GROOM One way to distinguish the groom is to give him a different, but complimentary, boutonniere to wear. Another option is to have the groom in, say, a white coat while his groomsmen wear black. Use this same color play with vests and cummerbunds. SHOPPING TIPS When the men visit their formalwear shop they should have a firm idea of the women’s wedding attire and bring fabric or color swatches from the bridesmaids’ gowns. Pictures of preferred formalwear styles would also be helpful. Buying the suit/tux is the best way to get the perfect fit, but rentals are now more widely available in various fits: classic, modern, and slim. A formalwear consultant will be most helpful in getting the fit just right. The groom and groomsmen should reserve their rentals at least three months in advance of the wedding. Final measurements should be taken about three weeks before the ceremony; however, be sure to come back a few days before the wedding for last-minute alterations. Out-of-town groomsmen can get measured at any formalwear store or local tailor’s near them, and send their measurements to the groom or to your formalwear store. Someone should be designated to return all formalwear to the store on time in order to avoid late fees, which can get quite expensive adding up the per day, per outfit costs.

DEFINE YOUR STYLE Wedding photography is more than just documenting the event. The right photographer for you will capture the spirit of you as a couple, as well as your day. While other factors come into play when choosing a photographer, determining a style that speaks to you is the first order of business. Below are four styles you might encounter as you start your search. Documentary: Candid, spontaneous, not styled or posed. Capturing moments as they happen — shots of decorative details, action, and people. This style is

currently trending, as couples gravitate toward the effortless, unforced feel of documentary-style photos. Portrait: Classic and posed. Poses can be staged with traditional backdrops (such as a church alter) or more creative (like lounging on a vintage sofa or holding hands in front of a vibrant city mural). Portrait doesn’t mean dull or dated — it just means the scenery and composition are arranged just-so. Fine Art or Edgy & Bold: Dramatic and dreamlike, with interesting angles and framing. Might use more muted tones for a film-like effect. These photos will represent the photographer’s vision, so if you love an artist’s unique style, fine art photography could be a great fit. Many photographers can do a blend of these styles, so don’t worry so much about being pigeon-holed into one or

PHOTOGRAPHY another. In the end, worry less about what a photographer calls their style and more about whether or not their work makes you happy. RESEARCH PHOTOGRAPHERS Once you’ve established your target style, it’s time to shop around. Collect referrals from friends, review local wedding magazines and websites, and check out bridal shows near you. Of course browsing local photographers’ websites, blogs, Facebook pages, and Instagram feeds is the quickest way to get a feel for the talent in your area. Today’s wedding photographers tend to lay it all out online: their personality, sensibilities, style, and philosophy — all things that will affect your decision. MEET IN PERSON Once you’ve curated a shortlist of potential photographers that seem to check all your boxes, it’s time to meet. Don’t underestimate this step! Even if your artistic visions align, it’s just as important that your personalities click. Remember, this person is shadowing you on your wedding day! Ask yourself how this person will mesh with your friends and family, too. They should be professional, respectful, and know when to hang back, while also being bold enough to go after great shots and draw natural expressions from your guests. QUESTION & EVALUATE First and foremost: Only meet with photographers within your budget. It’s disappointing to fall in love with a photographer’s work only to later discover their rates exceed your spending allowance. Do your research

PHOTOGRAPHY ahead of time and only meet with photographers you can afford. Ask to see a complete album of a wedding shot in a similar venue or with a style similar to yours. You might be seeing a highlight reel; it’s best to get the whole picture. Have a critical eye when assessing wedding albums: Did they capture all the shots you’re hoping for? Are the images clear? How’s the composition? Is the lighting blown out, too dark, or just right? Some photographers are more skilled at capturing low-light images, so consider the time, season, and location of your wedding and chose a professional whose talents suit your needs. Some photographers are more skilled at capturing low-light images, so consider the time, season, and location of your wedding when choosing a

photographer. With many expert wedding photographers to pick from, you’ll have no trouble finding someone whose experience is a perfect match for your wedding. DEFINE THE PACKAGE & GET THE SPECIFICS IN WRITING Photography packages vary from one professional to the next, so it’s critical to find out what’s included, as well as the cost of any add-ons. A photography package may or may not include the following: second shooters, additional hours, high-res jpgs, photo albums, or engagement sessions. Some photographers even offer same-day slide shows of the ceremony and wedding morning to play at the reception, or a few photos with quick turnaround for posting on social media. Many

Remember that seeminglyaffordable wedding photography suddenly isn’t all that affordable if you have to pay an extra $1,000 just to get the photo files. Speaking of files, ask any potential photographers how they back up your photos; if their answer doesn’t come swiftly and confidently, that can indicate a lack of professionalism. Also ask about their typical timeline for delivering proofs and final photos and how you’ll receive them, whether it’s small printed photos, a full album, an online gallery, or a flash drive of all the raw files. Bear in mind that faster isn’t always better. Some professionals shoot weddings nonstop during the high season, then spend the next six

months of the low season processing photos flawlessly. When you finally make your decision, get everything in writing. When is payment due? Will there be a backup camera? What’s the contingency plan should your photographer fall ill or have a family emergency? When will proofs be ready to view? Answering all of these questions up front will ease your mind and manage your expectations. MUST-CAPTURE MOMENTS If there are friends and family that you want to be sure to snap a photo with or a particular time in the ceremony or reception that you want captured, it helps to put that in writing as well. Transportation TRAVELING ON YOUR WEDDING DAY

YOU HAVE ARRIVED!

From your home to the ceremony to photo locations to the reception and beyond, it’s fitting that the bride, groom, and bridal party travel in style. Some opt for limos and other luxury vehicles, others take a turn on the trolley, and some go by golf cart. There are lots of fun, fashionable ways to get from here to there on your wedding day. Here are some ideas.4

tip

PB

Here comes the ride!

Consider setting up your own personal event code through Uber or Lyft. Guests input the code when they order their ride, and the trip is charged to you. You only pay for the rides used!

idealimpressions.com

TRANSPORTATION FIRST: HOW MANY? Your search for transportation starts once you decide how many people you’ll be moving. Do you want just the bride and the groom in a vehicle, or is the entire wedding party heading to the reception together? If the whole party is going, do you want to include their spouses or dates? What about each couple’s parents? Once you make those decisions, you can start searching around for transport based on size. Then, you can pick out a limousine, a coach party bus, a trolley, or something more unique and personal for the couple. Whatever you decide on, keep safety in mind while revelers are bouncing from place to place. LIMOS If there is a day to splurge on this iconic luxury vehicle, your wedding is certainly the day. Unlike some other forms of transport, a limo can be booked for an entire day, so you could get a high-class ride to pick you up at the house, deliver you to the ceremony, reception or even to the airport to jet away on a honeymoon. Most companies have a one or two hour minimum for their services so think about what the most cost-effective way would be to keep the limo around. If you want a car for both going to and leaving from the ceremony, it might be more affordable to hire two separate cars rather than pay for the vehicle to sit there during a long reception. There are quite a few options for limos. A formal limousine seats four people, and sometimes a bride and groom will travel to the ceremony alone. Or, if you’d like to include the wedding party, stretch limos can allow

for six to 10. For larger parties and a flashier mode of transport, sport utility models like the Hummer and Explorer are popular and unique both inside and out. The larger models are often posh, with flashy lights and decorative interiors. CATCH THE COACH For larger wedding parties or for those that want a little extra elbow room, a party bus or a luxury coach is a great way to travel from the ceremony to the reception. It’s got all the amenities and style of a luxury limousine, but with more room to spare –these will seat up to 10 people very comfortably. Or, for even bigger parties, a passenger coach or a party bus can seat anywhere from 21 to 49 people so it can be a great way to get a few special guests and family members on the special ride between locations. Or, if you have a very small wedding and the ceremony and reception are separated by a long distance, this is a fun way to get all the guests in on the party right away. Like limousine services, passenger and luxury coach companies require a minimum number of hours. The size and type of coach will determine the hourly rate. Depending on the size of your party, it may make sense to hire two coaches - maybe a luxury coach for the bride, groom and attendants and a passenger coach for the guests. This provides guests with a little more flexibility, as well. TAKING THE TROLLEY An attractive, fun and picturesque alternative to a limo or a passenger coach is a trolley, if it’s available in your area. Trolleys generally can

TRANSPORTATION accommodate between 20 and 35 people so they’re great for larger parties or for adding on some family members or friends. With their antique look and old world charm, they’ll lend a lovely, elegant touch to this wedding day detail. Since most have outdoor decks, these are especially fun in small towns so you can take a peek outside and watch onlookers wave at the newlyweds. And there’s no transportation alternative that looks as great in photos! UNIQUE ALTERNATIVES Limos, party buses and trolleys are great, traditional options, but some new couples might opt for something more personal or creative. A horsedrawn carriage is a romantic, vintage option especially if you can decorate it with your wedding colors or pull up to your waving guests. Vintage cars are also great photo ops and add a touch of class. An antique Rolls Royce or a ’69 Mustang are fun and something you don’t get to ride in every day. Ride in style like the royal couple did in their April wedding in a decorated navy soft-top Aston Martin Volante. Or, as with everything else in the wedding, make sure the transportation connects to YOU. Maybe you met at a Harley rally – ride off on your twin Hogs! Or maybe you share a love of mountain biking – don’t be afraid to wheel over on a tandem together. Personality is what makes weddings memorable so however you move, make sure it’s full of your style. TIPS FOR A GREAT DAY • Customize your playlist and bring your own CD to play in the limo.

• Plan liquid refreshments that won’t leave a mark, such as sparkling water. Wine or coffee can discolor your gown. For after the ceremony, you can go with champagne or mimosas, but be careful not to overindulge. • If you go for pictures between the ceremony and reception, champagne glasses can make a cute picture. • Be mindful of the time. You’ll be meeting and greeting all your guests and you’ll want to be your best. Don’t keep them waiting! DOWN TO DETAILS Make sure to confirm transportation booking and verify pick-up and departure times well in advance of your wedding dates. And don’t be afraid to ask for a test drive! For a written contract, look for these things: • Name and contact information for you and the company (including cell phone!) • Date, time and address of all pick-up and drop-off locations • Type and number of vehicles rented, and amenities supplied with each • Exact hours of vehicle rental • Total cost, including gas, mileage, tip and overtime fees • Deposit amount, balance and due date and cancellation policy • Signatures, including yours, and the company’s representative Weddings are busy, chaotic days so it’s wise to have someone closely associated with the wedding party, such as the best man or a family member, designated to coordinate with the chauffeur to make sure everything is on schedule.

Cakes & Desserts

A SWEET ENDING TO A SPECIAL DAY

Imagine a picture-perfect wedding cake. You’d probably envision a tiered confection with elegant embellishments crowned with fresh flowers, a porcelain cake topper, or the bride and groom’s initials. While such classic cakes are never out of style, there are lots of ways to freshen up tradition or even stray from it entirely, while still serving a sweet that is timeless, delicious, and uniquely you. 4

Cake Flavor Tip

If you decide on a basic tiered cake, use different flavors/ fillings for each layer to appeal to more tastes. artistgroup.com

CAKES DESSERT DECISIONS When deciding on your wedding cake or dessert, start by considering the rest of your wedding. The look and feel of your sweet treat should match your day, whether that’s classic elegance, rustic romance, whimsical fun, or megawatt glam. For a black tie wedding, a traditional cake is probably the way to go. If your wedding is outdoors or in a rustic barn, a naked cake or lattice-topped pies are a charming choice. As you style your dessert, think about what speaks to you as a couple. Are you both big movie buffs? Work your love of cinema into the cake with fondant rolls of film and famous characters perched on each tier. Did the groom propose in Paris? Find a baker who can craft a veritable

Eiffel Tower of cupcakes. If you have a uniquely sweet idea, seek out a professional who can bring your vision to life. TIERED STYLE Tiered cakes are a timeless choice for a reason — they’re impressive, eye-catching, and make for a very pretty picture. There’s no end to the myriad of styles you can apply to this classic design. The aforementioned naked cake is becoming increasing popular, with its homespun layers of exposed cake and buttercream. For fully frosted cakes, ruffles are always pretty and look at home at a variety of weddings, from outdoor to ballroom. Cakes that glimmer with metallic luster are certainly growing in popularity. Colorful, illustrative cakes can draw out

DECORATIVE DISPLAYS While a lone tiered cake can be a stunner, there are lots of ways to feature your dessert table as décor. Instead of just one large wedding cake, consider three to five smaller tiered cakes displayed at staggered heights. Cupcakes are another way to expand your wedding cake’s presence: Try showcasing the central cake surrounded by towers of matching cupcakes. You can even place a small cake at the center of each dinner table so the dessert can double as a centerpiece. A LITTLE VARIETY It’s not uncommon to see a traditional cake paired with other sweets like cookies, truffles, or whole tables chock full of candy. Candy also makes a great favor, as you can give each guest a cute bag for filling with candies of their choice. You can even think further outside the box to make your dessert experience an exceptionally memorable one. Having an outdoor wedding? Invite guests to roast marshmallows and stack their own s’mores, or build their own sundaes, complete with a well-stocked toppings bar. You could even serve your all-time favorite sweets. Do you share a donut obsession? A display brimming with deep-fried confections can be fun and whimsical. Or choose two desserts — one bride’s pick and one groom’s pick. SWEETS TO SIP For winter weddings, hot chocolate bars are a cozy way for guests to

A coffee bar also makes a wonderful late-night treat. FINDING A BAKERY Whatever you decide on, take advantage of all food tastings. Go with your gut and choose the dessert you deem the tastiest, but also factor in the bakery’s efficiency and professionalism. The baker should return your calls and emails in a timely manner, be flexible with your needs, have some familiarity with your reception venue, and guarantee on-time delivery, set-up, serving, and clean-up (if needed).

PRICING Wedding cakes are typically priced by the slice, depending on the style, ingredients, size, and embellishments. Your reception site might also charge a plating fee, often per person, to cut and serve the cake. But ask about this; it might be negotiable. THE FIRST BITE If you’re planning on a traditional cake cutting, make sure you have a knife and lifter set to go; these might be engraved with your initials or decorated with ribbons in your wedding colors. Traditionally, the bride grasps the knife with her right hand and the groom covers her hand with his as they cut the cake together — and the crowd goes wild!

FACE THE MUSIC

Imagine a wedding without a soundtrack. Sounds crazy, right? From moving songs at the ceremony to classy cocktail hour tunes to the late-night dance jams, music does so much to set the tone at a wedding. Here are the many ways you might incorporate music into your wedding day, and some helpful tips for ensuring that your soundtrack goes off without a hitch.4

Did you know DJs often provide lighting and audiovisual services, too? Ask your musicians about any perks they might offer! capturingyourday.com

MUSIC CEREMONY MUSIC When weighing your options for ceremony musicians, consider your vision (instrumental or vocalist) and your wedding’s style and venue. Think back to past weddings you’ve attended. What did you like about the music for each ceremony? What didn’t work so well? Once you and your fiancé have some ideas in mind, check out local musicians. Visit bridal shows, review bridal publications and online sources like premierbride.com, or ask for referrals from recently married friends or from your ceremony officiant. You could also work with an experienced talent or booking agency that offers convenient, one-stop-shopping for all your wedding music needs. Narrow down your options, and arrange

meetings to hear live your potential musicians and singers. After you’ve secured musicians for your ceremony, they can help you decide on what songs to include. Most musicians who specialize in weddings will be a great resource for song suggestions. Your officiant might also be helpful in guiding your musical selection. COCKTAILS AND DINNER MUSIC Conversation is key during cocktails and dinner, so the tunes should set the mood, but not intrude. If you decide on live music, try chamber music, classical or acoustic guitar, or a jazz ensemble for subtle entertainment that won’t overpower the mixing and mingling. A seasoned pianist can also be a fun choice if he or she can play

MUSIC a wide range of musical styles and take requests! If you go with your reception’s DJ or band, make sure they keep it on the softer side. RECEPTION AND DANCING MUSIC Let’s face it, this is a critical decision that can make or break an entire wedding. Fortunately, most musicians who specialize in weddings are talented professionals, and with the tips included here, you’ll be able to confidently select an excellent entertainer. First, ask yourself, band or DJ? While there will always be pros and cons to each, it always comes down to personal taste and budget. Start researching musicians early in the wedding planning process. This way, once you find someone you like, availability is less likely to be an issue.

Live music gives the evening a sort of festive energy and is a wonderful option if your budget allows. The key is finding a band that caters to weddings. These musicians offer versatility and will appeal to guests of all ages. In terms of expense, a live band will almost always cost more than a DJ. Keep this rule in mind: if you can’t afford a good wedding band then hire a DJ. A DJ will be more cost-effective and offer an almost infinite variety of music – truly something for everyone. Some keys to finding happiness in a DJ: 1) If possible, see them live before booking. 2) Do your personalities mesh? 3) Ask for, and follow up on, several references. 4) Communicate. Clarify what songs and events (first dance, father & bride

MUSIC dance, bouquet & garter toss, etc.) you do or do not wish to include. Decide on the details ahead of time; make a “do not play” list of any songs you simply can’t stand and a “must play” list of songs you don’t want to miss. All things considered, whether you go for a band or a DJ, your dance party will be a guaranteed success as long as you treat your guests to a wide variety of music. THE NITTY GRITTY For the reception… Consider your reception site and how this might impact your choice in entertainment. Communicate with your site manager so you’re aware of any restrictions and so that he/she is aware of your plans ahead of time.

CONGRATULATIONS!

MICHIGAN PHOTO IMAGING Ingrid & Colin’s Wedding July 2018

Communicate with your band or DJ so that they can visit the venue to make sure it meets their needs in terms of space, electricity, and lighting. In general… As with other wedding vendors, make sure the ins and outs of your agreement with your musicians is very clear and in writing. This includes payment, start and end times, fees for playing overtime, alternate plans if a musician is sick the day of your wedding, etc. Confirm all the details with your musicians about one week prior to your celebration. Once you’ve done your homework, hired musicians for each stage of your wedding day, and worked out the details, you can rest easy. That is, until it’s time to start practicing your dance moves. Ask the Right Questions A good band or versatile DJ will reach out to all ages and tastes, with showmanship and energy to keep the party in high gear. • What packages do you offer? What do they include? • May I see your references/demo CD? • May I see you perform at an event? • If I provide you with a list of songs, will you be able to play them? • Can we control the volume? • How will you all be dressed? • How long do you play/ how many breaks? • How long to prepare or set up? • Can you be a master of ceremonies? • When do you charge overtime? • How far in advance must I book your services? • What is your cancellation policy? • Is a deposit required? If so, when and how much?

FLORAL DESIGN

FOR A BEAUTIFUL WEDDING Through decades of evolving wedding traditions and styles, certain things remain constant like a bride’s white dress and gorgeous flowers to adorn the day. Though we think of flowers as an accent, they’re so much more at a wedding. Flowers help define a wedding’s colors, theme, and mood.4

FLOWERS If possible, book a florist 8 to 10 months before your wedding. Your goal is to find someone who is organized and professional and whose style and personality meshes with your own. Know your wedding colors and ceremony and reception locations. If you have a picture of your wedding dress and any fabric swatches from the bridesmaid dresses, bring those along as well. Have a budget in mind. The right florist for you will take all of these elements (your style, venue, and budget) and create something special just for you. YOU AND YOUR WEDDING PARTY You’ll first want to determine the look of your bridal bouquet. All other floral pieces will take their cue from this piece. Full, rounded bouquets are gorgeous, as are cascading bouquets

which are a classic choice making a modern comeback. Just as we’re seeing bridesmaids in mix-and-match dresses, we’re seeing mix-and-match bouquets more frequently and mix-and-match boutonnieres as well. Another way to work flowers into fashion: flower crowns! THE CEREMONY & RECEPTION If you’re having your ceremony in a place of worship, check with your officiant for any restrictions before finalizing the flowers. Some churches request that flowers remain on-site for weekend services, though this practice is rather outdated. For the reception, there are countless floral styles to incorporate into the décor: elegant vases filled with cut flowers, towering candelabras with verdant accents, topiaries, scattered rose

FLOWERS petals, assorted small vases with just a few blooms each, and so much more. Keep in mind that the height of the arrangements shouldn’t get in the way of conversation. The key is to either make the arrangements low enough to talk over or high enough to talk under. If your bouquets are doubling as decoration at the reception, equally spacing the bouquets at the head table is a lovely way to go. Finish off the table with a garland of greenery laced with flowers for a gorgeous effect. If your budget allows, consider adding floral flourishes throughout the reception hall to tie everything together. You can also use greenery to fill in a large room. FLOWERS IN ALL SEASONS Winter: Amaryllis, Casablanca Lily, Freesia, Gerbera Daisy, Heather Holly, Narcissus, Poinsettia, Rose, Stephanotis. Spring: Peony, Sweet Pea, Lilac, Ranunculus, Hydrangea, Tulip, Calla Lily, Magnolia. Summer: Anemone, Azalea, Camellia, Daffodil, French Tulip, Hyacinth, Jasmine, Lily of the Valley, Mimosa, Pansy, Primrose, Violet. Whatever your wedding’s theme and style, by collaborating with a professional florist, you’re sure to have the flowers of your dreams. HONEYMOON From the planning stages to the trip itself, we’ve compiled our best honeymoon ideas and advice. TALK ABOUT YOUR TRIP Take time as a couple to sit down and toss ideas around. Decide on your ideal destination and figure out what you’d like to do when you’re there besides laying in bed all day. Are you up for outdoor activities such as water sports or hiking? Do you want to experience a new culture and check off some sightseeing from your bucket list? Or, would you rather just laze about, soak up the sun, and be pampered? There’s no right or wrong answer, but make sure to discuss your expectations before you book your trip. You don’t want to arrive at the all-inclusive resort only to find that you’d rather relax on the

beach and your husband would rather take snorkeling lessons. Of course you’ll have to compromise, but talking about these compromises long before the trip will make the honeymoon much sweeter. Let’s look at some destinations to consider. Go tropical When you say “honeymoon,” most people think of a remote, tropical island that looks like something straight from a postcard. You can’t beat a fruity umbrella-clad drink and romantic walks along the beach. Even for the most active of couples, your honeymoon is one time when it’s okay to sit back and let yourselves be taken care of. If you choose a tropical destination, an all-inclusive resort is a most relaxing way to go. Do your research through travel

HONEYMOON sites and first-hand accounts from family and friends, and find out what exactly is meant by “all-inclusive”. The definition varies from one resort to the next. At some places, “all-inclusive” includes the cost of your room and two meals each day. At other resorts, it means three meals each day, unlimited drinks, champagne on arrival, and a trip to the spa. When it’s time to book your trip, always mention that you’ll be on your honeymoon. Most places offer a honeymoon package, and you might even find entire resorts that cater exclusively to honeymooners. All abroad! A trip abroad is a thrilling way to start a marriage. It’s an adventure and a chance to get caught up in a whirlwind of new ideas and cultures. However, if you’ve

never been abroad before, make sure this is an experience you’re both fully committed to. Planning an international trip for the first time can be stressful, and it could be overwhelming to be in foreign lands when all you want to do is relax and enjoy each other’s company. But if you’re up for going international, the result can be a true test of teamwork and a most romantic, unforgettable experience. Here are some nitty gritty considerations. Make sure your passport is updated, especially if your last name on a different piece of identification is going to change. It’s usually best to book any tickets in your maiden name, since that is likely to be the name still on your passport and driver’s license. HONEYMOON travel sites and forums for must-have tips and advice. Staying local If you don’t have the funds for a plane ticket abroad or can’t get away for a long trip, consider what’s close to home. You’ll probably be surprised to learn that there’s a quaint bed & breakfast just a few miles from your home or a majestic state park where you can camp out under the stars. Turn off your cell phones and focus on each other. It will seem as if you’re light years away even in your own backyard. Take a cruise If you can’t decide on a destination, a cruise might be for you. It’s the best of both worlds! If you want to see Europe, but you’ve never been and don’t have time to plan a trip, try a Mediterranean cruise. If you know you want to go tropical but can’t decide on a spot, island hop on a Caribbean cruise. And if you can’t decide whether you want to relax or be active, a cruise offers the chance to do both. Plus, meals, drinks, and entertainment are not only included, they’re right outside your cabin door! When booking a cruise, just like any other destination, mention that you’re on your honeymoon and see if the cruise line has a special deal or package. PLAN AND PREP Here are some things to think about, especially if you’ve never traveled to your honeymoon spot before. • Different customs. If you’re traveling abroad, do your research. Find out if there are gestures that are deemed inappropriate, actions that are considered rude, or types of dress that are unacceptable to the local

community. Tipping customs vary from country to country, so find out what percentage to tip and when to do so. • Language. Learn some key phrases and pick up a pocket-sized dictionary or phrase book. • Weather. Find out the average high and low temps for the time of year you’re traveling, and be prepared for rain or shine. WORK WITH A TRAVEL AGENT You have enough planning on your plate with the wedding so leave your travel planning to a professional! The cost to you is generally zero, or very, very minimal, and an experienced agent will save you so much time and greatly reduce your stress. If anything goes wrong (cancelled flight, lost reservation, etc.), your travel agent is just a phone call away. MAKE IT ROMANTIC It’s no secret that a honeymoon is all about those intimate moments and fueling the newly-wed romance. So be proactive in making sparks fly! Pack a secret gift for each other or plan a nighttime excursion — anything to spice things up. By keeping the romance as per-sonal as possible, the love light will be burning strong no matter where you’re honeymoon-ing. DESTINATION WEDDINGS A destination wedding might be an elopement for just the bride and groom or a small affair that includes immediate family and friends. Either way, destination weddings are a fun es-cape and an unforgettable experience — a wedding and honeymoon all rolled into one!

Honeymoon ADVENTURE AWAITS IN

CALI, COLOMBIA Newlyweds in search of adventures in culture, food, and fun — welcome to Colombia!4

The iconic River Cat (Gato del Rio) Sculpture by Hernando Tejada at Cats Park - Cali, Colombia. Photo by Diego Grandi / Shutterstock.com

WHY COLOMBIA? A Colombian honeymoon will immerse you in colonial charm, the wonders of nature, electric nightlife, romance, history, and plenty of excitement. Plus, it’s affordable, in terms of both time and money. Distance wise, Colombia is just 2.5 hours from Miami, or 3.5 hours from Houston. It also lands in a U.S. time zone, so jet-lag is nonexistent. On the whole, Colombia’s climate varies very little throughout the year. It’s tropical, hot, and humid; drier in summer, and wetter in winter. Cali’s temperature is pleasant year-round, with the peak travel season spanning early June to late September. During these months, the average temperature ranges from 65 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and precipitation is minimal. A BIT ABOUT CALI Santiago de Cali, Cali for short, is Colombia’s third-largest city by population and second-largest by area. It’s the capital of the Valle del Cauca department and the only major Colombian city along the Pacific Coast. Cali natives take pride in their vibrant culture. The city’s catchphrase: Cali es Cali y lo demás es loma, ¿oís? — which

Squirrel Monkey at the Zoon in Cali, Colombia

means, “Cali is Cali, and the rest is just mountain, ya hear?” THINGS TO DO: SALSA DANCING, CAT SCULPTURES & HILLTOP HIKES First and foremost, Cali is known as the salsa capital of Colombia. Talk about romantic! Going out on the town at night to salsa clubs is the best way to experience this tradition. If you’re not game to dance, you can always just watch, but why not give it a whirl? You can even book private salsa lessons during the day, then dance with the locals at night. Just remember, whenever going out at night, to exercise some caution. Security in Colombia has improved significantly in recent years, but better safe than sorry. If you’re looking for other daytime activities, a great place to start is the Zoológico de Cali, recognized by many as the best zoo in all of Colombia. Here, you can see a wide array of exotic animals that you’d otherwise only find in the Amazon. For a more intimate interaction with some of nature’s creatures, visit the Andoke Butterfly Farm. The farm is more of a garden, thoughtfully and beautifully curated to attract all manner of butterflies and tropical bird species.

If your passions intersect at “art” and “cats,” the Gato de Tejada park is a must. It’s a public space centered around a three-ton bronze cat sculpture created by artist Hernando Tejada. The park now boasts many cat sculptures by other artists. Walking through the lovely green space, taking in the scenery and many unique works of art, would be a nice way to spend an hour or so in Cali. Cat sculptures not your thing? If you’re at all fascinated by historic planes, trains, and automobiles, the Museo Aereo Fenix, the aviation and transportation museum, is a fun destination. Another way to stretch your legs is, of course, by hiking! In Cali, hike the Cerro de las Tres Cruces — three crosses that sit high in the mountains overlooking the city. Hiking up to the crosses is a popular outdoor activity, even for the locals, and the views are spectacular. The hike will be most crowded on weekends, so start early in the day. It’s also advised that you

leave any valuables behind, as the hike is more isolated and the risk of robbery a bit increased. THINGS TO SEE: HISTORY, ART & CULTURE A visit to the Cristo Rey statue, reminiscent of Rio’s Christ the Redeemer, is a must. The statue is smaller than the Redeemer, but the views of Cali from the statue are magnificent. Spend some time in the Barrio San Antonio, Cali’s historic center. This is the oldest part of the city and home to quaint and trendy cafés, colonial architecture, quality restaurants and bars, and lots to explore. Here you’ll also find the Iglesia de San Antonio (San Antonio Church), located atop a hill with a striking view of the city and a nice surrounding park. Other churches worth visiting include Iglesia de la Ermita, also located in the historic district, and Iglesia de la Merced, a beautiful colonial cathedral and Cali’s oldest church. Colonial La Merced church with modern skyscrapers in the center of Cali, Colombia.

Colombian Cuisine: Cholado, Empanadas and Pandebono.

If you’re in search of even more history, there are number of museums for your viewing pleasure. The Museo de Arte Colonial is attached to the Merced cathedral and highlights colonial religious art. The Museo Arqueológico displays pre-Colombian artifacts created by the indigenous people. The Museo de Oro is all about gold, and the Museo de Arte Moderno La Tertullia features modern art, photography, and sculpture. Many Haciendas, homes that belonged to former sugar barons, are now also open as museums. Here, you’ll learn the process of cultivating sugar while also enjoying the beauty of a historic home. Hacienda Cañas Gordas is located on Cali’s southern border and is considered by many to be the most beautiful of the colonial homes. THINGS TO EAT Part of the fun of traveling to an exotic place like Colombia is experiencing the local cuisine! Here are some scrumptious eats you don’t want to miss: Arroz Atollado

is a dish that perfectly captures the flavors of Colombia. It’s made up of rice, potatoes, pork, chicken, and sometimes sausage, seasoned with middle eastern-inspired spices. Pandebono is a popular cheesy bread snack sold in bakeries, by street vendors, and at cafés. Come across some local empanadas vallunas? They’re a must! For a sweet treat, try cholado or raspado — a mix of shaved ice, flavored syrups, and condensed milk. Colombia is also home to many fruits that we don’t see stateside. Chontaduro is one such fruit — hard to describe, but worth trying. Lulo is another fruit with a very specific flavor, typically enjoyed as a raw fruit or as a juice. Lulada is a refreshing drink the combines the local lulo fruit with ice, sugar, water, and sometimes booze. However you spend your time in Cali — salsa dancing, hiking, or sampling the cuisine — this city gives adventurous honeymooners the chance to live like a local, and that’s an exciting way to start your new life together.

RECEPTION Before you can determine the type of venues to look at for, ask some broad questions. What style do you envision? A relaxed, summer wedding and a formal, winter wedding are better-suited to very different reception sites. Some examples: Rustic style: Barns, farms, country inns, and ranches. Traditional/Classic style: Ballrooms, banquet halls, hotels, country clubs, or community centers. These are often allinclusive! Natural/Open Air style: Waterfront, forest, vineyard, city park, or other locations where Mother Nature’s beauty shines. Also consider a Plan B for inclement weather. Non-Traditional style: Museums, zoos, planetariums, and antique stores. Urban/Industrial style: Downtown lofts, art galleries, and warehouses.

Intimate style: Unique spaces catered toward small weddings — historic homes, a small party room at your favorite restaurant, or a tent in your parents’ backyard (tented weddings can work for other styles, too). Once you’ve settled on your reception’s aesthetic and the type of spaces you wish to explore, it’s time to get to work. Here are the first three factors to consider during your hunt. GUEST COUNT AND BUDGET These sound like two separate entities, but are in fact totally entwined. You can only afford to host the number of people that your budget allows; therefore your budget will determine your wedding’s headcount. That, or you need to increase your budget to accommodate more folks. Once you finalize your budget and

WEDDING DATE Being committed to a particular wedding date will narrow down your options. If a reception site doesn’t have your date available, move on. If it does, know that nothing is final until you’ve signed a contract and made a deposit. Once your decision is made, it’s critical to officially secure the space as soon as possible. Some choice venues are booked one to two years in advance, particularly on popular dates. ON-SITE VS. OFF-SITE Most on-site locations provide the majority of goods and services needed for your reception: catering, beverages,

tables, chairs, tableware, linens, and serving staff. Such locations are typically hotels, ballrooms, private clubs, restaurants, and more. These facilities usually charge on a per-person basis and have a minimum guest requirement. Off-site locations offer the use of the reception space only. You supply the caterer, furnishings, décor, waitstaff and bartenders, and everything in between. Such locations range from open-concept urban lofts to tented receptions. The responsibility of coordinating your own reception goods and services might sound like a headache to some brides, and to others, it’s an opportunity to fully personalize their day. Off-site venues are often a blank slate, allowing you to furnish and dress up the space as you like, bring in whatever food and drink your heart desires, and run the day on

RECEPTION your own schedule. There are pros and cons to both on- and off-site venues — what matters is what’s right for you and your wedding! Once you’ve determined the above, it’s nitty-gritty time. Below are seven details to take into account as you visit and evaluate reception venues. Location. Consider the distance between the ceremony and reception locations. Is it more than a 30-minute drive? That’s asking a lot of your guests. If the distance to your reception is lengthy, if the place is difficult to find, or if the spot is inconvenient (say, located near a baseball stadium on game day), you might want to provide transportation for your guests. Size and Layout. You’ve already eliminated sites that are too small for your guest list, but you should still

make sure your friends and family have plenty of room to mix and mingle, rather than bump shoulders. Will the entire reception take place in one room, or will there be a separate space for cocktail hour, dinner, and dancing? As you look at spaces, think about where to situate the tables, dance floor, DJ, etc. Privacy. Public spaces such as county parks won’t close down for your reception. Bear in mind that a wandering local might stumble upon your party! Or if your venue has multiple event spaces (such as a hotel with several ballrooms), find out if there will be another party going on at the same time as yours. Make sure there is enough separation between the event spaces so the two parties don’t interfere. Parking. Confirm that there is ample, well-lighted, and convenient parking

RECEPTION for your guests. If there isn’t, find out if a valet or shuttle service is available. Technical details. Whether you’re planning to have a DJ or live band, ask about possible restrictions on the type, volume, or duration of music. Confirm that there’s adequate power and electrical outlets for speakers, mixers, and amplifiers, and consider the acoustics of the space. It’s not uncommon for a venue’s coordinator to invite future brides and grooms to stop by a scheduled wedding to get a feel for sound levels and acoustics. If this is a real concern for you, just ask if you can do a drop-in. Odds are the site coordinator will be welcoming. Room décor. Most sites are rather neutral, but it still pays to take note of the permanent decorations in an event space. Do the flooring,

wall color, window treatments, and artwork suit the style and season of your wedding? Is it a room with a view? If photography is of great importance to you, search online for professional photos from weddings staged in the space. Does it photograph well? Services offered. With each site you visit, note what’s included in the rental price. Whether it’s big things like catering and waitstaff or details like candles and breath mints in the bathroom, it pays to get those details up front. Also bear in mind that the included services greatly impact whether or not a reception site fits within your budget. An affordable venue that doesn’t include any furnishings, for instance, might not be so affordable in the end.

GLUTEN-FREE AND VEGAN dare to be different & delicious Whether due to health reasons or a lifestyle choice, it’s important for the bride and groom, the dinner party hosts, to accommodate their guests. Luckily, wedding and event caterers are keeping up with the times, offering plenty of scrumptious meals to suit all palates. Vegetarian meals often include meatless pastas and veggie lasagna, as cheese isn’t off limits to vegetarians. There are times that a vegetarian meal can be made vegan simply by removing the cheese - but not always. Going gluten-free? Eliminate grains. The key is to plan ahead. In your wedding invitations, on the RSVP card, include a line which says “please advise of any dietary requirements.” This

invites your guests to alert you to any restrictions without feeling like a bother. Whenever possible, work with your caterer to plan hors-d’oeuvres and dinner options that cover all your bases. If serving passed appetizers during cocktail hour, make sure there’s a variety of offerings, rather than everything being wrapped in bacon. This same variety is also easier to achieve if serving a buffet or family-style dinner. If dietary needs are a priority of yours, ask prospective caterers up front about their experience cooking more non-traditional fare. They may have a dish in their repertoire that checks a lot of dietary boxes, and it may just be scrumptious enough to serve to everyone!

PLEASE BE SEATED Seating charts can help guests seat themselves without using those elegant, hard-to-read place cards employed since the turn of the century. The seating charts can be as elegant as place cards, if done properly. A prominently displayed graphic seating plan, typically 24”x36”, greets guests and quickly dispatches them to their designated

places. The names and table numbers are presented in classic calligraphic style and the chart can be designed in a manner appropriate to the wedding’s style. Seating charts are gaining popularity with “wedding contributors” whose job it is to laboriously hand-write a hundred or more guest’s names on the traditional place cards saving time, and in some cases, money.

Catering SAYING “I DO” TO

CUISINE & CATERING It’s sad but true that stereotypical wedding food sets the bar pretty low. Guests tend to anticipate chicken breast, rice pilaf, a side of steamed veggies, and a basket of dinner rolls. Luckily, catering services have certainly raised the bar in recent years, and personal, memorable, delicious meals are becoming the new normal. 4

CATERING FEASTS WITH FLAIR Nowadays, as brides and grooms are getting a little adventurous with their cuisine, caterers are offering more bold flavors, meaningful meals, and fun experiences. Sit-down meals are gravitating toward family-style, where larger portions of dishes are passed around the table. This style works with everything from homey meat and potatoes to build-your-own tacos. Ethnic cuisine is a great way to bring a little flavor to your reception. Take your guests around the world with a variety of food stations offering everything from sushi to French cheeses. It’s a great way to inspire conversation! Food trucks are another popular way to up the fun factor, and late-night snacks like popcorn, pizza, or grilled cheese sliders are a huge hit with guests. To get really personal, think about hosting each of your favorite meals. The bride’s might be a nice juicy steak and the groom’s might be chicken and waffles — and that’s okay! The more you embrace what makes you unique, the more memorable your wedding will be. In recent years, there’s also been an emphasis not only on unique meals, but locally-sourced, quality ingredients. Couples like to support local purveyors, since hosting a locally-harvested meal means they’re not only building up their own community, but also enjoying the freshness of a farm-to-table feast.

If your reception location allows you to bring in an independent caterer, you still might have to choose from a pre-approved list. If you’re able to choose your own caterer, try to narrow down your options to no more than three. Otherwise, after a month of tastings, all the flavors will blur together. As you call caterers to inquire after their services, make sure to have as much information on hand as possible. They’ll want to know your wedding date, time, approximate number of guests, and whether you’d like a sit-down or buffet-style meal. If you already have some ideas for your menu or any specific limitations (think vegetarian or gluten free), let the caterer know so they can

better prepare for the initial meeting. Ask to see sample wedding menus and references. Step 2: Decide on your style With all of the general specifics in place, such as sit-down or buffet, it’s time to factor in your wedding’s style and degree of formality. Right off the bat, caterers will want to talk about your personal tastes (and budget!). Think about the vibe your wedding — is it a classic ballroom affair or a rustic outdoor bash? Do you want the food to be posh or playful? Such details will help a caterer determine what they can offer that falls in line with your vision. Step 3: Schedule a tasting When you finally narrow down your list of prospective caterers, it’s time for

CATERING the fun part — tastings! Speak up during your tastings and don’t be afraid to ask if they can tweak something to your tastes. This is your day and your meal, and any good caterer will be pleased to work with your wishes as much as they can.

CONGRATULATIONS!

MICHIGAN PHOTO IMAGING Jacqueline & Derek’s Wedding Jan 2018

Step 4: Finalize the menu Gather inspiration from magazines, websites, and bridal shows to clarify what you like and dislike in a wedding meal. Think about weddings you’ve attended, or ask friends for favorites and failures. Your caterer will also be a great resource to bounce ideas around and finally craft a menu that’s perfect for you. When in doubt, ask your caterer and trust them. They’ve seen lots of weddings and know what works best for the number of people, time of day, and location, so take their professional advice to heart. Step 5: Calculate the cost Finalizing the menu and calculating the cost might happen somewhat simultaneously, since your budget will surely affect the direction of your wedding meal. Here’s a bit about what you can expect in terms of pricing: Facilities with in-house catering departments may have a minimum charge or set-up fee, while an independent caterer will usually work within any reasonable, agreed-upon budget. Keep in mind that buffets are usually priced higher, since they’ll have to account for a little more per person. Caterers usually require your final guest count one week before the wedding. This is the number of people you’ll actually be charged for, though most caterers will factor in a few lastminute guests, too. Decide if you’ll include meals for wedding-related personnel, such as the DJ, musicians,

CATERING photographer, and on-site coordinator. If cost is an issue, ask your caterer about more casual meals for vendors. Finally, make sure to ask what extras are included in the catering cost. Find out if your caterer will provide table linens, plates, glasses, crystal, silverware, and serving pieces — otherwise you’ll need ample time to make other arrangements. Step 6: Hire the servers With a finalized menu all priced out and good to go, it’s time to determine how many wait staff you’ll need to serve the feast and keep the reception running smoothly. Your caterer will give you their expert opinion, but a safe bet is one server for every 10 to 12 guests for a sit-down dinner, and two servers for every 50 guests for a buffet-style dinner. If you’re having a full open bar, too, that will require more help — one bartender for every 50 to 75 guests. Make sure to talk with your caterer ahead of time to make sure that the servers’ style of dress works with the style of your wedding. Step 7: Get it in writing Sign a contract with your caterer only after you have all of the details spelled out: date, time, address of site, food items by course, beverages and bar guidelines, number of guests covered, provisions for special meals, time of cocktail hour, time meal is served, contact people, number of wait staff and bartenders, linens, terms of payment, and liability insurance. There will probably be an advance deposit when you sign the contract — and don’t forget to check the cancellation policy.

MODERN ROMANCE POPS WITH PERSONALITY

Today’s weddings are a gorgeous mix of classic styles and trendy touches - a theme that has been rather constant in recent years. To bring their unique brand to their wedding, brides and grooms are focusing all the more on injecting their own personality into the celebration. Yes, in 2018 individuality is a trend all its own. 4

CURRENT TRENDS STYLE: SOFT & SATURATED Wearing multiple looks for the ceremony and reception is on-trend and gaining momentum as brides want to have their princess moment, then kick off their shoes and dance the night away. But if you’re keeping it classic and gownonly, you’ll see layers of lace, illusion backs with fine detailing and buttons, all sorts of sleeves, and long trains paired with cathedral-length veils. These frocks don’t only come in white: you can find them in an array of light colors like gold, blush, grey, and blue. Such soft neutral looks carry over into the bridal party with bridesmaids wearing neutral palettes and metallicsoften times mixing and matching. Of course, when they’re not wearing a barely-there color, you’ll find bridesmaids in rich jewel tones like sapphire blue, emerald green, and amethyst purple. In short, it’s trendy to be on either end of the spectrum (pastel or highly saturated) rather than somewhere in between. WEDDING THEMES: PINTEREST PRETTY & KEEPING IT CLASSIC We’re living in the days of Pinterestloving brides so it comes as little surprise that DIY weddings are still very trendy. While the classic wedding is still popular, couples are also choosing reception venues that allow for a lot of creativity — sites where you pay to rent the space, but are responsible for bringing your own décor, catering, and other rentals. Lots of today’s weddings are all about ambience, and more brides are setting aside large chunks of their budget strictly for decorations. As for the type of décor, rustic weddings are still very much in style, but the trend is shifting from burlap and mason jars to a combination of earthy and glamorous. You’ll see

elements like crystal chandeliers, eclectic place settings, and Instagram-worthy lounge areas and vintage furniture. FLOWERS: LOOSE & LUSH The floral industry is experiencing a return to the cascading bridal bouquet. Brides want flowers with a natural feeling: lush, loose, and looking like they were just plucked from a garden. Trailing ribbons in silk, taffeta, or velvet are another way for brides to personalize their bouquets. Brides can pin to their bouquet ribbons charms or photo lockets in remembrance of deceased loved ones. FOOD: UNIQUE EATS The traditional sit-down, three- or five-course meal is experiencing a sort of revolution. While you’ll still see these formal dinners at classic weddings, many more brides are also turning food into an interactive event. Family-style meals and food trucks are increasingly common. Dinners that feature locally-grown and in-season ingredients are also very popular. These more casual farm-to-table dinners go hand-in-hand with familystyle dining to foster a comfortable, homey environment. When it comes to desserts, “interactive” is still the name of the game. Dessert tables of pie, ice cream, candy, or cupcakes reign supreme. Some couples choose to have both a classic wedding cake along with a dessert bar just for fun. And just as food trucks are gaining popularity, so are dessert “trucks” like gelato carts and gourmet popsicle stands. These help-yourself stations aren’t just for edibles — they’re for drinkables, too. Coffee and hot chocolate bars with all the fixings are a cool trend for winter weddings.

SHOPPING MADE EASY attending bridal shows You may find that the more time you can save in planning your wedding the better. A Bridal Show can help. Here’s information and tips to help! Plan in Advance: Know your budget. Make a list of what you need most and what your budget will allow for each item and service. Types of Bridal Shows: Small intimate

shows average attendance is between 75-200 people and generally around 20-40 different vendors. These shows allow you much more time to talk with the individual wedding professionals, ask questions and get more in-depth answers. The second kind of show is much larger, averaging anywhere from 800 to 2000 attending and featuring anywhere from 100-250 different vendors. The biggest advantage to this kind of show is the wide range of vendors available and the beautiful displays for great wedding ideas. Pre-printed address labels: Most vendors will have some special drawing for gifts and prizes. Having these labels available will save you time and effort. Include your full name, address, phone number, wedding date and email address. Create a temporary wedding e-mail address: It’s free and can be deleted after your wedding date. Obviously you

will receive solicitation after the show. Quality vendors reaching out to provide specific wedding information and tips, along with any special offers they might have is a good thing. Who should come along: Yes, your fiancé should come along, especially if it’s just the two of you. Decisions can be made on the spot and you both will have a good time! Or, bring a couple of friends, your mother or a whole entourage. Date or Calendar Book: It might be appropriate to schedule an appointment at another time for a more in-depth conversation. Usually any show “specials” will also apply if a date and time is made for a follow-up discussion. There are times when you might want to book something right at the show such as limited availability and your date is still open. Or you might have already met with a vendor prior and are ready to make the commitment. Shoes: Wear comfortable shoes. The odds are you’ll be on your feet for quite a while. You don’t want to leave until you’re ready, and not because your feet are too tired. Pressing onward when you’re feet hurt just isn’t any fun. Children: Avoid bringing small children to the show if possible. While you might not have a choice or it may be tempting to bring your flower girl along to see the neat wedding stuff, they are sure to tire more quickly then you. Prepare for information overload: When you find a vendor you are interested in, make a note about why. What struck you as appealing about this person? When you get home and you’re looking through 10 different photographers, your note may be the only thing you have to remember which ones you liked and why. Also, write down any good tips they might have given you.

Know your overall budget BEFORE you start planning your wedding - it’s one of the first issues you and your fiancé should discuss. Set your priorities based on what is most important to both of you and spend accordingly. For example, if the meal is the most important element of your wedding, you’ll want to allocate a greater portion of your budget to it.

SHARING THE COST

Groom’s wedding ring Wedding gift for groom Gifts for maid/matron of honor & bridesmaids Gift for parents (optional)

GROOM

BRIDE

It is no longer expected that wedding costs will be assigned according to tradition. Discuss your plan and budget with your families to determine whether to follow a traditional division of financial responsibility for the wedding costs. If circumstances don’t allow the families to follow tradition, the proper rationale in deciding who pays for what portion is basic: whoever is most willing and most able to pay for a wedding expense assumes responsibility for that expense.
