Shanghai has a long and rich histor y in the global cities race. In 18 42 China was forced to enter the global trade market in the Treat y of Nanjing. Shanghai was c hosen as the gateway to the glo b al ec onomi c network bec ause of its strategic loc ation at the confluence of the Yangt ze River and Huangpu River. Shanghai bec ame the international por t cit y of China.

In the rac e to re - establishes a new water front identit y, Shanghai has been developing along select areas of the Huangpu River while leaving other portions as generic globally scaled developments. The city’s morphological transition is erasing the historic al layers of urbanism.

T he age of razing an entire cit y has passed, as other global cities have new development in coexistence with the old. To remain relevant in the future, the development in Shanghai needs to adopt a h y brid urbanist attitude towards the old and the new.

24

In the rapid evolution of Shanghai’s identit y, T he Middle Way addresses the cit y’s current ex treme at titude towards preser vation versus progression. T he site is the last oppor tunit y along the river front to med iate the coexistenc e of the past and fut ure id entit y of Shanghai at multiple sc ales.
