Ben Ainslie Racing are putting the final touches to their Old Portsmouth base and preparing for the America’s Cup World Series races off Southsea, from 23 to 26 July.

The event will be the first time that the contenders for the cup have been pitted against each other. BAR will take their first competitive steps towards their goal of bringing the cup home in 2017.

Ben gets race ready

Sir Ben said: “Portsmouth has a great maritime heritage and we felt it was a natural home for the team’s permanent base in the UK. We hope through our journey to bring the cup home to Britain we will inspire more young people to get involved in the sport, along with supporting the growth of the marine sector in the Solent area.” BAR say the new team HQ on The Camber will initially employ about 90 people, with many more potential jobs created among suppliers. It will be the focal point for the design, construction and development of the team’s boats and will also provide sports science and fitness facilities. The team plan an apprenticeship and training scheme, and the building will also contain a visitor centre for school and community groups, allowing them to experience the construction and operation of the team’s America’s Cup boats first-hand. The project is expected to boost the city’s economy. A recent report on Team New Zealand suggested that its America’s Cup base in Auckland created 1,000 jobs and brought an £60m boost to the local economy. Help for carers New strategy Portsmouth’s new carers strategy will be launched during Carers Week (see main article). It’s been written with input from carers and from professionals in health and social care and illustrated by University of Portsmouth student Joe Parker. The drawing on this page is by him. We plan to have the strategy on www.portsmouth.gov.uk during June. Just search carers strategy.

Be a volunteer with us Could you be a volunteer at the Carers Centre?

Are you a plate spinner? If you look after someone, you know what it’s like to “spin plates” – keep on top of lots of tasks all at the same time. We at the Carers Centre can help you deal with life looking after someone. We’ll be out and about during Carers Week (8–14 June), the annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities. If you need a chat or want to find out more, we’ll be around from 11am to 3pm at: ff Cosham precinct–Monday 8 June ff Sainsbury’s, Farlington–Tuesday 9 June ff Guildhall Square–Wednesday 10 June ff Bridge Centre, Fratton–Thursday 11 June ff Cascades–Thursday 11 June

Our 22 volunteers really enjoy what they do – helping in our kitchen, working at our Saturday café, supporting staff at events, doing admin or running carers’ quiet days. Here’s what one of our volunteers had to say: “I feel very valued and happy to participate. We laugh a lot and I love it!” If you have a couple of spare hours a month, or more, please contact us.

Keep in touch The Carers Centre is at 117 Orchard Road, Southsea and is open Monday to Thursday 9am–5pm, Friday 9am–4.30pm and Saturday 10am–2pm. ff Call us on 023 9285 1864 ff Email us on carerscentre@portsmouthcc.gov.uk ff Search carers at www.portsmouth.gov.uk ff Follow us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/ portsmouthcarerscentre

Why I’m Foster carer Emma with husband Chris and their dog Summer

Emma, 28, from Southsea, is one of our foster carers. Here she tells us how she sees her role. What made you want to foster? I didn’t want to go straight into a high-powered job after university, and did some volunteer mentoring with a 15-year-old girl whose mum had kicked her out. Just being part of our life was a positive influence for her, so I wanted to do more.

What are the rewards? The everyday experiences – bringing children into a safe place and giving them the care and positive routine they need. I give them experiences and good family relationships they may not have experienced before. It’s a job I’m proud of, that my friends and family respect.

a foster carer You call it a job?

Considering fostering?

Fostering is my job. I’m here to be a positive role model and influence. The financial rewards are very generous, up to nearly £500 a week for each young person, which means I can do it full-time.

During national Foster Care Fortnight (1–14 June) we invite everyone to “make a connection” to fostering, and raise awareness of Portsmouth young people who need a safe, stable environment while difficulties at home are addressed. On 11 June (7.30pm–9.30pm), find out about becoming a foster carer by meeting carers and staff at our Spinnaker Tower event (view deck 1). Free entry to the tower.

Anyone will tell you that parenting teenagers can be hard work, and some of these young people have faced really tough situations. But there are so many positives to balance those times.

Travel update

Train stations improve We’ve been making improvements to Portsmouth and Southsea, Fratton and Cosham train stations – with more facilities for cyclists and better security. The station improvements, made with South West Trains, include:

Portsmouth and Southsea ff secure bike parking with two-tier racks ff better seats ff push-button automatic doors for disabled passengers ff better CCTV ff redecorated and repaired columns and pillars

Try a bus – they’ve changed They’re high-tech

ff a bike pump and repair kit for public use

Cosham ff two-tier sheltered bike parking ff better CCTV and security lighting

Fratton ff two-tier sheltered bike parking

Virtually all Portsmouth buses have free Wi-Fi, and we’ve fitted more than 80 shelters with electronic displays that give timetable details and other information. More and more buses are being fitted with trackers so they can communicate with these shelters and let you know how many minutes you’ll wait.

They’re convenient Most of us live within a five or 10-minute walk of a bus stop. Buses make frequent trips in and out of the city, making them ideal for shopping or going to the football, without the hassle and cost of parking. Plus, with smart tickets like Solent Go, you don’t need change, and you can hop on and off as you like. You can even combine ferry travel with a bus trip.

ff cycle runners on footbridge steps ff better CCTV and security lighting We also hope to improve the outside of Portsmouth and Southsea station, with new paving, a more level surface, more shelter, better seats and more trees.

They’re fast Measures like priority signalling at busy junctions mean that buses can whizz through the busy city.

Get home composting Avoiding food waste is a great habit to get into, as it saves you lots of money and time, and is good for the environment. Some waste from your kitchen is unavoidable, like fruit and veg peelings for example. But if you make sure these go into a compost bin and not your rubbish, your reward will be great free compost for your garden! Put these in your home composter: ff veg peelings ff fruit scraps and peelings ff salad scraps

Pack it in! We often get asked why there’s so much packaging on some everyday items, especially when some of it can’t be recycled. It’s true that reducing packaging would use fewer natural resources, but there’s also a lot we can’t do without.

ff coffee grounds

Packaging can:

ff teabags

ff protect the product

ff eggshells

ff extend its shelf life

ff apple and pear cores

ff safeguard health

Important–Add an amount of shredded paper and torn-up card that’s equal to the amount of kitchen waste.

ff provide information ff promote the product

What can you do? ff choose packaging that can be recycled

Once they’re in the compost bin, give these items a stir around and in nine months you’ll have some lovely homemade compost! Don’t put in:

ff buy goods loose or with minimal packaging ff recycle glass bottles and jars at your local recycling point ff recycle the right things in your green bin ff buy large-sized items for products you use frequently, like tomato sauce or shampoo

ff meat

ff contact the retailer, brand or supplier if you think there is too much packaging on a product. See www.recyclenow.com/reduce/reducing-packaging

ff cooked foods ff dairy products Tell us what you love about home composting or why you are going to start doing it and we’ll give a prize of a kitchen caddy to the readers who provide the top five answers.

ff recycling all aerosols, tins, cans, plastic bottles, paper and cardboard collected from your recycling bin

Email your answers to bigrecycle@portsmouthcc. gov.uk or call 023 9283 4800, by 30 June 2015.

ff increasing the amount of local recycling points around the city

Save on a composter–to buy a low-cost home composter go to www.portsmouth. getcomposting.com or call 0844 571 4444.

ff thinking environmentally by not collecting plastics that would need to be sent far away for recycling

What is the council doing?

ff aiming to collect more packaging from you when it can be recycled in the UK

The facts about “legal highs” “Legal highs” have been in the news a lot, but it can be hard to understand what they are. Here are the facts. So-called “legal highs” are designed to act like illegal drugs. They’re more accurately called new psychoactive substances or NPS. Many are sold under brand names like Clockwork Orange, Bliss, Spice or Mary Jane. They’re often so new that there’s been little or no research into their health effects. So if you take them, you’re the guinea pig. There have been hospital admissions and even deaths linked to the use of NPS.

ff They are usually bought and sold either over the internet or in “head shops”. ff Because they’re called “legal highs”, a lot of people believe they’re safe, when in fact they’re not. Legal does not mean safe. ff Risks can include reduced inhibitions, drowsiness, excited or paranoid states, coma, seizures, and death.

So what do you need to know?

ff The risks are greater if used with alcohol or other drugs.

ff They are often marked as “not for human consumption”.

The best advice is to stay safe and avoid NPS.

ff They are often sold as “plant food”, “incense”, “bath salts”, “pond cleaner” or “research chemicals”.

If you’re worried about your NPS use or someone else’s, go to: www.talktofrank.com or www.angelusfoundation.com

ff Like illegal drugs they can come in powder, pill, liquid or herbal forms and can be swallowed, inhaled, snorted or even injected.

If you have a problem with drugs, alcohol or NPS you can contact our recovery hub for support and advice on 023 9275 1617.

Teach Portsmouth If you’re a teacher, newly qualified or with experience, then there are great opportunities in Portsmouth schools. You can find the latest vacancies and more information on the new website www.teachportsmouth.co.uk Jamie Barr is one newly qualified teacher who values the career development he’s getting in his Portsmouth primary school. He said: “I’m really pleased with the level of support I get here. Everyone is very understanding of when I don’t quite get things right and encourages me fully when I do well. “I have a mentor who observes my lessons and then provides feedback and coaching to mirror my lessons and general development. I’ve also been having coaching from the deputy head.” The council and the Portsmouth Teaching School Alliance are planning recruitment fairs later this year.

Stay off zigzags Too many drivers – including parents – are parking on zigzags near schools. This puts children in danger. Road safety officer Ollie Willocks said: “The most common factor in road accidents involving children is a child trying to cross the road from between parked cars, where visibility is poor. “Anyone who parks on zigzags during school hours risks a hefty fine in court. Parking on zigzags also risks a £70 parking ticket. Fines apply even if you’re just dropping off or picking up children.”

Friends around the globe As part of our series about Portsmouth’s links with cities around the world, we look at our bond with Haifa in Israel. A major Mediterranean seaport, Haifa is the largest city in northern Israel, and the third largest in the country.

Haifa: Shrine of the Báb and port. Picture: Michael Paul Gollmer

Haifa was the second overseas city to link with Portsmouth – there has been a sister link between the two communities since 1963. The link was set up at the invitation of Haifa, where it was realised that many Israeli navy personnel were on courses in and around the city. The Haifa-Portsmouth friendship link committee works closely in association with the friendship committee, individuals and organisations in Haifa. The link also aims to encourage organisations in Portsmouth to link up with those that have similar interests in Haifa, and to help entertain and arrange hospitality for groups coming to Portsmouth, as well as organise visits to Haifa. The link aims to be particularly beneficial for young people. Contact secretaryhaifaportsmouthlink@gmail.com Twinning and other links are supported, but not funded, by the council.
