{Book Design} Syllabus

Course Description Most people think of the book as a tool to gain information, a way to learn or as a means of entertainment. Prior to television and the internet, the book was one of the primary sources of obtaining knowledge of what was happening in the world. With the age of technology continuing to expand at a rapid rate, and by having stories, images and information available with a single mouse click, there are some that feel the book is becoming obsolete. However, there are those of us who still believe in the potential of the book and see it as something more. The book can be an experience that can express the personality of the content that lies within its pages. When a designer considers all parts of the book, they can tell their own story and share their concept through this versatile design tool. Throughout the semester we will explore the book as an object and will consider all forms of the book, from cover to cover, inside and outside. The following are just a few of the topics we will cover in this course: _Book Arts _Concept Development _Digital Fabrication _Layout Design _Advanced Typography From now on we will strive to develop the book as a complete experience, and we will engage with the book object to expand our practice as designers.
