BEHIND the DESIGN The Brick House 26 Chomley Street, Prahran

We sat down with Clare Cousins, the architect behind the Brick House, to learn more about its unique style and flexible family-living design.

Clare Cousins Director & Architect Clare Cousins Architects

Tell us about the vision behind the Brick House project? What was the brief from the owners? The brief was for a home that suits family life, with comfortable spaces to be together with friends, while at other times allow for people to have their own space. The curved walls and glass featured in the Brick House and other Clare Cousins Architects' designs, create a beautiful sense of fluidity. What is the inspiration behind this design element? We love using tough, durable materials in a way that creates soft lines. The scrolling glazed façade allows the garden to surround all living spaces and is in dialogue with the billowing timber-battened screen of the studio that hovers over the swimming pool. The Brick House was designed for a family with an eye toward the future. Could you elaborate on the key design elements that make the house adaptable for a family’s changing needs? The house first catered for a family with toddlers and now they’re teenagers. Spaces are flexible to suit all stages of family life. It’s luxurious to have two living rooms in close proximity to the kitchen - sitting rooms at the front of a house don’t get used. The family room is open and surrounded by garden, it’s a beautiful spot to sit during the day while the living room is cosy and great to hang out together at night.

Perfectly located within walking distance from High Street cafe's and parks, the Brick House was a residential passion project for architects Clare Cousins Architects. Their use of repetitive vertical lines, architectural curves and feature bricks has been skilfully applied to the home, which celebrates an effortless connection to the outdoors. Infused with timeless style and decisive functionality, this family home is suitable for all seasons, with a magnesium mineral pool taking centre stage in the central courtyard.

How does the studio space contribute to the overall design and privacy of the house, especially in relation to neighbouring buildings? The studio, above the garage, was designed as a sculptural form as it is viewed from within the house. Its timber battens allow filtered western light to the expansive floor to ceiling glazing with views onto to the central courtyard. A truly flexible space with its own ensuite and storage area, it was conceived as a bedroom, a workplace, a gym, a teenage hangout or granny flat. What are three words you would use to describe the home?

Secluded, textural, inviting.

Clare Cousins Architects has worked on a variety of projects, including specialist disability housing and social housing. How does your studio approach these projects differently, and how does this experience influence your residential designs? We love designing housing for people. Our private houses have informed the work that we are doing for community housing projects. Front of mind for us is what makes a home comfortable and a pleasure to live in? We think all homes should celebrate this, not just one-off bespoke houses. What’s next for Clare Cousins Architects? We are working on a number of exciting new houses in Melbourne and regional Victoria. We love that every project is different; the site, the brief and the client.

Tell us about the beautiful selection of modern brick and timber throughout.

jelliscraig.com.au

Textured off-white bricks are used for the scrolling house façade. Glazed bricks from Euroa are used internally in the kitchen and fireplace to add interest. Soap-washed timber-lined ceilings bring a textural warmth to the interior complementing the American oak joinery throughout. What is the inspiration behind the interior design selection?

Clare Cousins Architects is based in North Melbourne on the lands of the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people of the Eastern Kulin Nation. They engage in projects large and small, with their work encompassing housing, workplace, and cultural projects. Their process is considered and conversational, and they believe in design architecture that fundamentally enriches how we live. Learn more about Clare Cousins Architects at clarecousins.com.au @clarecousins

Environmental responsibility is important to the studio. Can you share any specific sustainable design elements or strategies implemented in the Brick House? Passive solar design was integrated from the conceptual stage. The strategic use of eaves and double-glazing help control internal temperatures during warmer months and allow low winter sun to bath the family room in sunlight in the cooler months. In-ground water tanks allow for reuse of storm water for the garden and pool. The 8kw solar panel array has a battery ready inverter fitted. Durable materials with low toxicity are used throughout allowing the building to age gracefully.

The interior materiality is bold and timeless. Materials are used in their raw state where possible. Venetian Plaster walls complement the warm timber ceilings, off white polished concrete floors, American oak joinery and glazed brick elements, creating a natural and textural interior palette.

From seed to sunshine:

Planting dream outdoor spaces Landscape designers Nathan Burkett Landscape Architecture understand the importance of working with the seasons to enhance your garden. Here, Nathan and his team share their advice on what to plant and how to maintain your garden during the warm summer months, so that it looks its very best all year round.

In Focus | November 2023

08

jelliscraig.com.au

What you should be planting right now. With the cooler months behind us, the risk of frost has abated providing favourable conditions for a variety of plants in readiness for summer. Several drought-tolerant ornamental grasses such as Miscanthus or Calamagrostis Karl Foerster are ideal to plant at this time and will flower through summer. Hardy perennials like Euphorbia wulfenii, Lavenders and Salvias will also perform well and provide striking colour in your garden especially combined with Lambs ear for texture. If you appreciate cut flowers, now is the time to plant Dahlia tubers with many varieties blooming from mid-summer to autumn. Pools and plants. When selecting poolside plants there are several factors to consider such as the microclimate of the area, sun exposure, water splashes and soil conditions. Plants surrounding a pool should be aesthetically pleasing but not prone to shedding leaves and debris into the pool. We have had a lot of success with evergreen species such as Ligularia reniformis, Arthropodiums, Aloes and Euphorbia. For shade and privacy, I would suggest strelitzia or hedging with Bamboo or Ficus hillii.

How to maintain your garden over the height of summer to keep it looking lush and healthy. Plant selection and positioning are fundamental to a garden looking lush and healthy, especially in the height of summer. Adequate and consistent irrigation is obvious; however, some plant species will burn and die off regardless of watering simply because they are not equipped for exposed conditions. It’s always a good idea to monitor soil moisture, check for faults in your irrigation system, and apply a thick layer of mulch around your plants to conserve soil moisture and protect the roots from the sun. Lawns should be mowed at a higher setting to provide some shade and protect the grass from heat stress. It is best to water lawns deeply and less frequently over summer and ideally in the morning or early evening. Ensure your garden looks its best for festive entertaining. Start regular maintenance early and it will pay dividends. Walk around your garden and take notice of what is working and whether there are areas that may need replacing or reworking while you still have time to make the adjustments. Begin now with the bigger tasks such as replanting, weeding, eliminating pests and disease and coring lawn areas to deepen the root system. Continually monitor the irrigation to ensure it is set appropriately for the weather conditions and is in good working order. Save mulching and the finishing touches until closer to Christmas so that it still looks fresh and manicured on Christmas Day.

With the cooler months behind us, the risk of frost has abated providing favourable conditions for a variety of plants in readiness for summer.

Types of greenery that provide the best shade for the height of summer.

We have seen increased demand for negative edge glass tiled pools in preference over fully fenced inground pools. The use of burnished concrete in hardscaping such as floating steps, bench seating and built-in barbeques has also gained popularity. Custom-designed hardscape features that reflect the unique tastes and preferences of homeowners are currently trending. This includes personalised patterns and colours in pavers and creative use of materials. Natural stones, like sandstone and bluestone, are becoming popular due to their timeless appeal and durability.

In my opinion, the most pleasant places to retreat from the sun in a garden are living pergolas, particularly around dining areas. These structures are usually composed of wooden or steel framing to support climbing plants such as a Virginia Creeper or an ornamental vine. They can also be created from clusters of pleached or espaliered trees such as Plane Trees or Maples, with a clear central trunk and branches trained to grow a horizontal canopy overhead. Apart from being visually stunning, living pergolas provide the added benefit of cooling an outdoor space as well as providing shade. Curating a garden that will thrive in the Melbourne climate. Anyone who has lived in Melbourne is familiar with its unique weather extremes, so this should be considered when designing a garden in Melbourne. I recommend including some native species that are well adapted to the local climate and can contend with Melbourne’s hot dry summers. Use a variety of species to create a more resilient garden with a mix of trees, shrubs and ground cover of varying tones and textures. It’s also important to design a garden with seasonal interest by choosing plants that will provide colour and blooms throughout the year to keep the garden vibrant and ever-changing. We are fortunate to be able to grow deciduous varieties that wouldn’t survive in some of the warmer parts of the country so why not take advantage of this? By working with a landscape architect who is familiar with Melbourne's climate, you can create a garden that not only thrives but also enhances the beauty and functionality of your outdoor space while being sustainable and environmentally responsible.

Nathan Burkett Landscape Architecture create exceptional gardens and outdoor spaces enjoyed by clients across some of Melbourne and Australia’s most exclusive postcodes. With each project, they seek to enhance the useability of space. It’s not only about creating an aesthetically stunning design, but an experience their clients will savour for years to come.

Consider using drought-tolerant species to reduce the need for irrigation and group plants with similar irrigation needs. You can install rainwater harvesting systems to collect rainwater from rooftops or hardscapes. You may also wish to incorporate green walls to improve insulation and reduce heat gain on buildings. I recommend encouraging healthy soil by adding compost or organic matter to the soil. This aids plant growth and segregates carbon. Adopt an organic-first approach to weeds and pest management, minimising the need for chemicals and pesticides.

Each shift brought a unique set of circumstances, from delivering a baby in a stairwell to managing complex trauma cases. I have encountered various medical emergencies each demanding quick thinking and precise action. Transporting critically ill patients, ensuring their stability en route to specialised facilities like burn centers required a delicate balance of expertise and empathy. Throughout my time in this demanding role, I learned the value of not just professional competence, but the significance of providing a personal touch. Building rapport and establishing trust with the individuals, as well as their families, became a crucial aspect of my approach. Even in the most challenging situations ensuring that they felt comforted and safe was paramount. It was about understanding their needs and fears, and being their support system in those critical moments.

David Sanguinedo Senior Sales Consultant, Jellis Craig Inner North We are delighted to welcome leading Fitzroy agent, David Sanguinedo to the Jellis Craig Inner North team. David’s track record spans a diverse range of properties, from apartments and conversions to terraces and family homes within the Inner North marketplace. How has the Fitzroy property market changed over recent years?

What I find most captivating about working in real estate is being intricately involved in the various stages of the property cycle. Guiding individuals in finding their dream homes and assisting them in securing these properties is a deeply fulfilling aspect of my work. Every buyer and vendor has a different journey and I make it a point to stay connected with clients, taking a genuine interest in their lives and their stories. Observing the dynamic nature of the property market is particularly gratifying, as I witness firsthand the evolving needs and aspirations of my clients. For instance, I've had the privilege of assisting young couples in purchasing their first home only to see them expand their family and a move towards upsizing within a year. I've also been part of the journey for those looking to downsize who may be seeking a change after experiencing life's milestones and transitions. A close friend and mentor inspired me greatly with his exceptional people skills and the profound impact he left on his clients, motivating me to strive for the same level of excellence in my interactions. Upon his suggestion, I ventured into the real estate field during the process of transferring my license to Australia and since then I have never looked back.

That’s hard to answer they are all unique in their own way, but if I had to choose I'd say: 122 Nicholson Street, Fitzroy built and lived in by the architect of St Patricks Cathedral and possibly one of Melbourne’s most ornate and stunning facades. Tell us about ‘home’. Our home life is nothing short of lively and adventurous. We have a 6-year-old boy, who we call the T-Rex of the family and we have an imaginative and creative 10-year-old daughter, who constantly surprises us with her unique perspective on life and and lastly a wolf (dog) who we joke is our favourite child. My wife is an artist and an absolute rock star of a partner, providing unwavering support and love in life and my business and she keeps our family thriving. Your kids are 6 and 10 years old, what makes the neighbourhood so great for families? My son and daughter are both active and creative, they love Fitzroy gardens and going to the museum.
